Ayrshire name boys' team for Grangemouth

The Ayrshire team who will contest the 2016 Scottish boys' area team championship at Grangemouth on Sunday,  June 5 has been announced.

The four-man team includes three players from the Ayr Belleisle club, Jordan Sweeney, Callum Irving and Jack Broun, who will be joined by Euan Ferguson of Turnberry in the bid to win the Scottish boys' area team title for Ayrshire for only the third time in the event's history.

Ayrshire's two previous successes were in 1998 at Cowglen and 2007 at Forres.

The team will play 36 holes on the day of the event, with both foursomes scores in the morning and three of the four singles scores in the afternoon counting towards the team total.

Louis Gaughan leads by two in P and H

Championship

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Bathgate's Louis Gaughan, pictured, achieved a top 20 finish in the Tartan Tour's inaugural P and H 54-hole championship at the Renaissance Club last year.
He again showed his liking for the North Berwick course by leading the field in the 2016 event by a clear two shots after a splendid round of five-under-par 66.
Gaughan was runner-up in last year's Scottish young professionals' championship but, apart from that, he has not been much in the limelight.
This tournament, with a field of 125, could change all that.
Gaughan birdied the long third, fifth, short sixth, seveth, long 16th and 18th in halves of 33, on which the only blot was a bogey at the short ninth.
He leads by two from Ross Munro (Duddingston), Marc Owenson (Gullane) and Paul O'Hara (Clydeway Golf).
The huge field will be cut to the leading 40 and ties after the second round. If the first round scores are any guide, the cut should be around 148.

New West of Scotland stroke-play championship

McInally's wire-to-wire win  at Loudoun

FROM AYRSHIRE GOLF BLOGSPOT

Tommy McInally (Loudoun) led from start to finish to win the new West Of Scotland Stroke-play Trophy over his home course at Loudoun Gowf Club on Sunday 22nd May 2016.

The 36 hole championship was reintroduced into the West Of Scotland calendar this year, some fifteen years or so since it was last played for over 72 holes.

A field of 64 players from clubs throughout the six West Of Scotland Area Associations took part in the competition this year, which was blessed with fine sunny weather and a course is fine condition.

Tommy McInally was first out in the morning, and an opening round of 67, one under par, gave him the joint lead at the halfway stage with his playing partner Craig Hamilton (Ballochmyle), one shot ahead of Steven Stamper (Turnberry) and Shaun Hedger (West Kilbride).

In the second round McInally posted a testing target for the rest of the field with aone over par 69 giving him a level par total of 136 for 36 holes.

With Hamilton's hopes ending early in the second round it was Steven Stamper who ultimately provided the closest challenge, matching McInally's second round score of 69 for a 137 total to leave him just one shot adrift.
Shaun Hedger took third place with 140 after a closing round of 72, whilst Dominic Dougan (Airdrie) followed his opening round of 74 with a superb 67 in the afternoon, the best closing round of the day, to take fourth spot on 141 by virtue of the best second round, from Greg Telfer (Prestwick St Cuthbert) and George Robertson (Irvine) in fifth and sixth respectively.

FROM GOLFWEEK.COM
Bernhard Langer birdied four of his his last six holes to cruise to a six-shot and sixth senior major title at the Regions Tradition in Birmingham, Alabama on Sunday.
Langer shot a 5-under 67 to get to 17-under 271 to seal his victory over Olin Browne at 11 under.
The win is the 27th US PGA Tour Champions victory for the Florida-based 58-year-old German. The win also matches Gary Player and Tom Watson for the third-most major titles on the US PGA Tour Champions, one behind Hale Irwin and two behind Jack Nicklaus.
Langer has put together one of the best seasons on any golf tour this year. He won the Chubb Classic in February and hasn’t finished worse than T-11 in his seven US PGA Tour Champions events. The 17-under total ties his lowest score in relation to par this season.
Browne built on his T-5 last week with another strong finish, giving him his second top 10 of the season.
Colin Montgomerie tied for 17th place on 284 - 13 strokes behind winner Langer.
The Scot earned $31,433.
Ian Woosnam tied for 52nd place on 293 and earned $5,443.

Renfrewshire wins boys' match v Stirlingshire

Renfrewshire boys' golf team, pictured above, started the defence of the West League title   with a convincing 6-2 win against Stirlingshire at Dunblane New Golf Club.
After the mixed weather conditions of the past few days they were greeted with a course covered in sunshine and in superb condition.
Renfrewshire fielded three new players in the Under-16 section of the team, together with more experienced players in the Under18’s.
Taking into account the fact that none of them had played the course before, the result was even more encouraging for the team managers, Graham McGee and Lyall Campbell.
It took a while for the boys to settle and  as the games passed the eighth hole it was very close.
However, a change in fortunes as the games closed out saw the Renfrewshire boys turn the situation in their favour, with most producing their best golf in the latter stages.
It is worth noting that four of the games went to the last hole but none of these was lost by the Renfrewshire boys, so well done to them for sticking to the task.
