Sergio Garcia captures AT and T Byron

Nelson title after play-off v Broks Koepka

IRVING, Texas – Sergio Garcia scored a rare win on the US PGA Tour on Sunday when he beat American Brooks Koepka at the first hole of a play-off for the title in the AT and T Byron Nelson Tournament.

There are just enough flecks of gray in Garcia’s beard to remind us that El Nino is no longer the baby-faced assassin who stole our hearts at the 1999 US PGA Championship.
At 36, he is older, wiser, and still admired for his rare combination of power and precision.
Let’s put aside his reputation for being the best player never to win a major for the moment. For too long he’s been chased by an equally nagging and perplexing question: Why doesn’t he win more on the US PGA Tour?
“It doesn’t bother me,” Garcia said after the third round on Saturday. “I’d rather be a consistent player like I’ve been my whole career than win one and miss 10 cuts. I’d rather have more opportunities even if it doesn’t happen, but at least put myself in that position.”
The opportunities have been abundant for Garcia, who had notched 22 top-10 finishes since his last Tour title at the 2012 Wyndham Championship. (He did win the 2014 Commercial Bank Qatar Masters on the European Tour, and the 2015 Ho Tram Open in Vietnam.)
Some, Garcia admitted, he “threw away,” others he noted were “stolen” from him by dazzling feats, such as Rickie Fowler’s ridiculously-good finish at the 2015 Players, or Kevin Streelman closing with seven straight birdies at the 2014 Travelers Championship.
Why hasn’t Garcia won more? It’s a question without an answer. His putter used to bare the brunt of the blame. Then it was his self-defeatist attitude. Some simply questioned his heart.
In the final round of the AT&T Byron Nelson, Garcia showed the grit and resolve that often has been found lacking, and as luck would have it, this time he was the one who stumbled into a title. Garcia, who entered the week ranked No. 15 in the world, overcame two water balls on the final nine holes to shoot 2-under 68 and defeated Brooks Koepka with a par on the first playoff.
“It is nice to be on the other side of the coin or whatever you want to call it and, you know, stand here with you guys and with a win,” Garcia said at his winner’s press conference.
He didn’t realize it until he was told later, but in notching his ninth Tour title Garcia matched Seve Ballesteros for the most Tour wins by a Spanish-born player.
“I kind of won a little a la Seve today,” said Garcia, who played bogey-free for his first 44 holes en route to a 72-hole aggregate of 15-under 265.
For most of the day at TPC Four Seasons Resort, it looked to be the coming out party for the 26-year-old Koepka, who held the 54-hole lead and outdueled Jordan Spieth over the weekend in his backyard with what Koepka termed his ‘C game.’
But Koepka coughed up a three-stroke lead on the back nine with a pair of bogeys at the 14th and 15th holes, and missed a 16-foot birdie putt for the win at the last. When he tugged his drive into the water off the 18th tee on the first playoff hole, he all but gift-wrapped the title to Garcia.
“You can’t win a golf tournament when you’re swinging it and have no idea where it’s going,” Koepka said.
Using the claw grip, Garcia has shown steady improvement with the short stick. At the Byron Nelson, he led the field, holing more than 403 feet of putts. Less and less does he appear as the tortured soul wallowing in self-pity.
“I still wear my emotions on my sleeve, don’t you worry about that,” he said with a grin. “I guess nowadays, I also realize that obviously winning is amazing, it’s great, it’s an unbelievable feeling but it’s not the only thing in the world.”
Those are words Garcia never would have uttered in 1999, when he made his PGA Tour debut here, or in 2004 when he won the Byron Nelson for the first time. It’s spoken like a man who has been on the ropes, risen from the canvas, and has learned to cherish victory however it may come his way.

Back-at-best Hume wins in Wales as Scots

dominate top placings

BARRY'S THE KING OF THE CASTLE. Barry Hume with the Welsh open amateur stroke-play championship trophy and Harlech Castle in the background.

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Spearheaded by Barry Hume's four rounds in the 60s to win by two shots, Scots dominated the leading positions in the Welsh men's open amateur stroke-play championship at Royal St David's Golf Club, Harlech.
A former Scottish amateur champion who had a lean and short spell as a professional, Hume has come back to his best form in the last season or two.
He had rounds of 67, 66, 66 and 69 for an eight-under-par total of 268. His final round included a double bogey 6 and he also dropped shots at the eighth, ninth and 10th but Hume plays a risk-and-reward game and he did have gains at the fourth, fifth, sixth, 11th and 16th.
The Haggs Castle man won by two shots from fellow Scot Craig Howie (Peebles) whose 270 aggregate was made up of 71, 65, 66 and 68. Howie birdied the second and fifth in his final round and looked at that point as if he would mount a challenge to Hume but Craig was one over par for his remaining holes - 12 pars and a bogey at the 13th.
Yet another Scot, Calum Fyfe (Cawder) tied with Englishman Bill Enefer for third place on 271. Fyfe's rounds were 66, 68, 70 and 67.
Sandy Scott, who shot the round of the tournament - a seven-under-par 62 in the third round, finished tied fifth on 272. His other scores were 68, 74 and 68.  He could have tied for second place but bogeyed the 14th and 16th in his final round.
Still another very good effort from the Nairn youngster who looks like he is going places.
Kyle Godsman (Moray) finished tied 24th on 280 (73-71-67-69) and last year's Scottish boys' U18 match-play champion, Will Porter (Carnoustie) finished joint 34th on 283 with his second and fourth rounds of 73 and 75 cancelling out the good work he did in his first and third efforts of 67 and 68.

Russell Knox ties with Bradley Dredge for second place

Rory McIlroy wins Irish Open by three shots

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Rory McIlroy delighted the fans at The K Club as the home favourite overcame a stern challenge from Russell Knox to win the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open hosted by the Rory Foundation.
The Northern Irishman had spoken coming into the week of what a first professional win on Irish soil would mean to him and he fired a closing 69 to make it European Tour win number 13 in County Kildare.
The result is all the more impressive considering he had missed the cut at this event the last three seasons and he becomes the first home winner since Shane Lowry won as an amateur in 2009.
The four-time Major Championship winner came into the final round with a three-shot lead but was overtaken by Knox with three holes to play before two stunning approach shots gave him an birdie-par-eagle finish and a 12 under total of 276.
That handed him a three-shot win over Knox and Bradley Dredge, who had made a final day surge of his own with a birdie-birdie finish in a 66.
Knox was leading until he bogeyed the 16th which McIlroy birdied for a two-shot swing in his favour. Knox parred the last two holes.

McIlroy, World No 3 and a four-time Major Championship winner, came into the final round with a three-shot lead but was overtaken by Knox with three holes to play before two stunning approach shots gave him an birdie-par-eagle finish and a 12 under total.

That handed him a three-shot win over Knox and Bradley Dredge, who had made a final day surge of his own with a birdie-birdie finish in a 66.
McIlroy becomes the first player to win a European Tour event he has hosted and he will donate his winning prize of €666,660 to the Rory Foundation.
Knox and Dredge earned 347,420 euros each.
"I was trying to stay as relaxed as possible," said McIlroy. "Even when Russell birdied 14 and 15, which are two of the toughest holes on the course, I knew that my length would be an advantage over the last  three holes.
"I told myself, 'I'm still in this, I still have chances'. I didn't quite think I'd end up with my three (on the 18th) but I thought I still had a chance so I stayed as patient as I possibly could. But when there's 30,000 people roaring you on, that's quite hard. It was absolutely incredible.
"Just looking up there and seeing all my friends and family and the support that I've had this week. To win in front of them, I don't get a chance to play in front my home fans very often so to play like that and to finish like that today, I'll never forget it.
"I'm excited. I kept saying I'm close and I felt that I needed a week like this to kick-start something and no better place than back here in Ireland to do it.
"Hopefully this is the catapult into another great summer."
Qualifying School graduate Matthew Southgate finished fourth at eight under to claim the best result of his career just ten months after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.
The Englishman was in tears when he gained his card at PGA Catalunya Resort and there were similarly emotional scenes on the 18th in Ireland.

Welshman Dredge made the early move with birdies on the second, third and fourth before Knox reduced the lead to two with an eagle on the fourth from 20 feet as McIlroy birdied the same hole.
Another Knox birdie followed from 12 feet on the next and the Scot took a brave line to make a gain on the eighth just before a delay of an hour and nine minutes due to hailstorm.
Dredge got to seven under with a birdie on the 13th but it was Knox who was applying the major pressure and he rolled in from 20 feet on the 14th before hitting a brilliant second into the next to take a one-shot lead.

The Scot found the bunker off the tee on the 16th, though, and when McIlroy hit a stunning 271-yard three wood to reach the green in two for a birdie, three puts from Knox resulted in a two-shot swing.
McIlroy saw a birdie putt agonisingly lip out on the 17th but his one-shot lead up the last became three as he put a 253-yard second shot to two feet for a tap-in eagle.
McIlroy earned
Martin Kaymer fired a closing 65 to get to six under alongside fellow German Maximilian Kieffer and England's Tyrrell Hatton, with Rafa Cabrera Bello and Eddie Pepperell a further shot back.
