Syme lying 5th but Irish eyes are smiling

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Drumoig's Connor Syme has done well to be in fifth place with a round to go in the Irish men's open amateur golf championship at Royal Dublin Golf Club.
But the leading Scot has seven shots to make up on the long-time Irish leader, Colm Campbell (Warrenpoint), if he is to follow in the footsteps of Jamie Savage as a winner of this prestigious tournament.
Syme has had rounds of 74, 68 and 67 for seven-under-par 209, which is good scoring but a long way behind Campbell's 68, 68 and 66 for 14-under 202.
Another Irishman, Jack Hume (Naas) is lying second, two off the pace on 204, after rounds of 67, 72 and 65.

Chris Hanson leads by one after three

  rounds in Morocco

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
England’s Chris Hanson faces one of the most important rounds of his golfing career on Sunday as he takes a one-shot lead into the final 18 holes of the European Tour's Trophée Hassan II at Rabat, Morocco.
A five under par 67 at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam handed the 30 year old Qualifying School graduate a narrow lead lead on six under for the week.

Hanson, who finished fourth in a Challenge Tour event in Madrid last week, has never finished higher than 39th on The European Tour, but carded five birdies, two bogeys and an eagle on the par-five 12th to sit a shot clear of compatriot David Dixon and Clément Berardo of France.

Having carded three birdies over his first 11 holes, Hanson suddenly found himself leading when his chip on the 12th hit the pin and dropped into the hole for an eagle.

And while bogeys at the 13th and 17th followed, Hanson bounced back on both occasions as he finished his round with a birdie from five feet.
“It’s not something I thought I was going to go out there and shoot today but I played some really nice stuff and took my chances when I got them,” he said.
“I felt I got rewarded for some good golf today.
“It was a little bit of a lucky chip – it hit the flag and dropped - but you need those sort of things and hopefully it will set me up for a nice Sunday.
“I drove the ball really nicely and kept myself in play a lot of the time. From there you can score on this golf course.
Dixon came home in 33 to card a round of 67, with playing partner Berardo shooting a 68 after chipping in at the 13th.
Another Englishman, Joshua White, lies fourth after dropping two shots late on, with in-form Korean Jeunghun Wang fifth on three under.
Overnight leader Francesco Laporta shot a 76 to drop into a seven-way tie for sixth on two under, with European Tour winners Estanislao Goya and Robert Rock amongst those on the same mark.

McKechnie and McBain equal Portpatrick

Dunskey pro record of 63 in victory tie

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Paul McKechnie (Braid Hills) and Newmachar's Greg McBain earned £1,117 each for sharing first place in the PGA in Scotland's Portpatrick Dunskey Charity pro-am today.
Remarkably, on a day when conditions were far from ideal forlow scoring - windy and chilly - both equalled the professional course record of seven-under-par 63s but by different routes.
McKechnie had an eagle 2 at the 13th and birdies at the fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and 16th in a bogey-free round (31-32) of  quality.
McBain was also flawless and had seven birdies - at the first, second, third, sixth, ninth, 10th and 17th in halves of 30-33.
Home course pro Christopher Robinson finished in third place, breathing down their necks with a 64, which was also bogey-free in halves of 64-60. He earned £745.
Greig Hutcheon (PLGC Inchmarlo) finished fourth with a 66 which included an eagle 2 at the 10th and birdies at the 13th, 17th and 18th in an inward half of 30, the best of the day. He earned £558.
Michael Patterson (Kilmacolm), who had an individual round of 71 led the Stranraer Golf Club team to victory with a 19-under-par team score of 121.
The amateurs were: Willie Slone (handicap 3), Steve Magee (18), Dougie Comptom (7).

Kellett leading Scot but 13 behind leader

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Ross Kellett (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) shot a bogey-free, three-birdie third round of 69 today for a 54-hole tally of four-under-par 212 in the Turkish Airlines Challenge at Gloria Golf Club, Belek in the Antalya region of southern Turkey.
Ross is the best placed Scot but even he is tied for 43rd position, 13 shots behind the leader by two, Frenchman Clement Sordet (66-68-65 for 17-under 199).
Kellett birdied the second, 16th and 17th. His earlier rounds were 73 and 70.
Duncan Stewart had a little bit of everything in a par round of 72 which leaves him T55 on 214.
He birdied the first and second and had an eagle 3 at the ninth to be out in 33, but it all went pear-shaped for the Grantown on Spey man after that.
He had double bogey 6s at the 13th and 14th and dropped another at the 15th before birdied the 16th  and came home in 39.
Walker Cup amateur Ewen Ferguson slippd out of the picture with a 76 after a pair of 70s to start with.
He is tied 64th on 216. The Bearsden player bogeyed the 10th, 13th, 14th and 15th in an inward half of 39.
Bradley Neil from Blairgowrie slipped back to the erratic form that has dogged him since he turned pro. After rounds of 72 and 70, Neil shot a 77 to be last of 71 on 219. He had a double bogey 5 at the short third and a double bogey 7 at the 18th.
He also bogeyed the 10th, 12th, 13th and 14th, which is desperate form. On the bright side he did birdie the fourth, ninth and 16th.

Rory McIlroy hits second round 69 at Quail

Hollow to be six behind leader
Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy is aiming for a third win at Quail Hollow following his 2010 and 2015 titles

Rory McIlroy hit a three-under-par 69 to move to within six shots of leader Andrew Loupe after the second round of the Wells Fargo Championship.
Four birdies and an eagle saw the defending champion move to five under but bogeys on the final two holes left him two under at the halfway stage.
Loupe leads on eight under, one clear of fellow American Roberto Castro after a 71 at Quail Hollow Golf Club.
Justin Rose (70) is four under; fellow Englishman Paul Casey (71) is one back.
Northern Ireland's McIlroy, who triumphed in Charlotte 12 months ago after scoring 14 under for the final two rounds, is confident he can regain his title on the course where he claimed his maiden PGA Tour title in 2010.
"If I get off to a fast start, then I'll be right there back in the tournament," he said.
England's Ian Poulter slipped out of contention with a 74 which left him tied for 45th on level par, while his compatriot Luke Donald moved up to one over after a 69.
American Zac Blair was disqualified for using a non-conforming club after he bent his putter when he hit himself on the head with it following a missed putt.
