David Law, Duncan Stewart in the Madrid mix

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
David Law and Duncan Stewart are in strong contention after two rounds of the Madrid Challenge at Real Club La Herreria in the Spanish capital city.
Aberdonian Law has had rounds of 68 and 66 for 10-under-par 134 and is tied second with Sebastien Soderberg (Sweden) and Welshman Rhys Enoch, only one shot behind the leader, Italy's Francesco Laporta (64-69 for 133).
Stewart, from Grantown-on-Spey but now based in Edinburgh and playing out of Turnhouse Golf Club, shot 69-66 for a share of fifth place on135.
Law, starting at the 10th, birdied his first three holes, then the 15th and 16th in a bogey-free 30 for his first nine. He cooled off a bit with bogeys at the second and seventh but  a birdie 4 at the par-5 eighth set the seal on a very good day for the Scot.
David said later by Email "I played great on my front 9 (the back 9) and slowed up a little on my back 9 but I was  really happy with the score as the course is tough. I am playing and putting  well and looking forward to the weekend."
Stewart also had an early bogey, at the second, but he too picked up the scent of birdies and had gains at the third, sixth, ninth, 13th and 17th.
The only other Scot to survive the second-round cut at 141 and better was Peter Whiteford, who is tied 17th on 137 after rounds of 70 and 67.
George Murray (144), Chris Doak (14), Paul Shields (145), Jack Doherty (149), Bradley Neil (150) and Scott Henry (151) all missed the cut

Felipe Aguilar takes clubhouse lead at

weather-hit China Open

Chile's Felipe Aguilar claimed the clubhouse lead in the weather-disrupted Volvo China Open after finally overcoming the effects of his unorthodox winter activities.
Aguilar stormed home in 31 at Topwin Golf and Country Club to add a flawless 65 to his opening 68 and set the target on 11 under par, one shot ahead of Sweden's Alex Noren and Austria's Bernd Wiesberger.
The 41-year-old had missed the cut in six straight events before finishing tied 58th in the Shenzhen International last week and admitted completing an Ironman triathlon over the winter had taken its toll.

"It's been a tough beginning of the year so hopefully this will be a turnaround point," Aguilar said.
"I think I believe my doctors when they said the Ironman was going to affect my fitness for the first two months [of the year]. They said it could take 45 days [to recover] and it took close to 60 days.
"It takes a lot of time and energy and both sports don't go along with each other. I look back on it as a great experience and I'll do it again after I quit playing golf."
Play was initially suspended due to the threat of lightning and then abandoned for the day due to darkness, with the second round set to resume early on Saturday.

First-round leader Hennie Otto has four holes to play and is two shots off the lead on nine under par alongside England's Tyrrell Hatton, Denmark's Lucas Bjerregaard, Germany's Marcel Siem and South Korea's Tae-hoon Kim, who recorded a hole-in-one on his way to a brilliant 64.
Kim holed out on the 177-yard 13th hole in a remarkable run of scoring which saw him play a 12-hole stretch in nine under par, before dropping his only shot of the day on the 17th.
"I played well and after I got the hole-in-one I became really confident and finished really well," the world No 563 said.
"It was about 165 metres but with the view from the tee, we couldn't see the hole, only the top of the flag. I was aiming a little to the left of the pin and I just hit a seven iron, it was a beautiful shot and the galleries beside the green shouted out so that's how I knew."
Noren carded five birdies and no bogeys to record a second consecutive 67, while Wiesberger carded four birdies and one bogey in his 69.
"I felt relaxed out there," Wiesberger said. "I played great golf yesterday and scored really well in tough conditions yesterday so I was looking forward to getting out there this morning and trying to do the same.
"I played decent, not quite as well as yesterday, especially off the tee and was struggling with the pace of my putting early on. I left a lot of putts short but all in all I feel well on the golf course and it's a good first two days."
Defending champion Wu Ashun, who became the first Chinese player to win a European Tour event on home soil 12 months ago, is four under par with seven holes remaining, with the halfway cut projected to fall at two under.

Robson off the boil but still wins seniors'

spring meeting by two

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Aberdeen businessman Nick Robson (Meldrum House) won the Scottish Senior Golf Society's spring meeting by two strokes from a field of 142 at Monifieth Links today.

But it was a different Robson from the man who shot a first-day, two-under-par 69 to open up a three-stroke lead at halfway.
In the second round, Robson took 78 blows (41-37), dropping nine shots in a 13-hole span sandwiched between birdies at the first and 16th.
His total of 147 still gave him victory with something to spare. Runner-up was Maurice Lindsay (Broughty) with rounds of 75 and 74 for 159.
Tied third on 150 were Graham Forrest (Northumberland) (76-74) and Graham Bell (Downfield) (72-80).
Nairn's Robert Smith threatened Robson's lead until he bogeyed the 11th, 14th, 16th and 17th, finishing 76-75 for a share of fifth place on 151.

Nick Robson battles through to Monifieth victory

GORDON THOMSON REPORTS
Nick Robson (Meldrum House) won the Scottish Seniors’ Spring Meeting at Monifieth Links today with a fine aggregate of 147 In the most demanding of weather conditions.
Nick added a 78 to his excellent first round score of 69 to edge out local player, Maurice Lindsay (Broughty) by two shots with early starters, Graham Forrest (Northumberland) and Graham Bell (Downfield), who had set a good target of 150, one shot further back.
A group of eight players tied on 151 including backmarker Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon) and Lindsay Gordon (Turnhouse),whose fine 73 was the best score of the second day.
Nick led by three shots overnight but had to battle hard for his second round score. After an opening birdie he dropped 8 shots in the next 10 holes but a fine birdie at the 15th settled things down and he held on for victory. Having won the last event of 2015, Nick has clearly started where he left off and a good season should lie in prospect.
Despite the difficult weather conditions Monifieth Links again proved to be an excellent and hospitable venue for the large field.
