South Korean Soomin Lee scores first

European Tour win in China

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Soomin Lee went wire-to-wire at the Shenzhen International to claim his first European Tour title at Genzon Golf Club, China.
Lee, Alexander Levy, Lee Slattery, Joost Luiten, Brandon Stone and Scott Hend all had a chance to take the crown, with just one shot separating the six players as the weather-delayed event came down to a day five shootout.
The South Korean, in just his sixth start on the European Tour, began the extra day in a share of top spot with five holes to play and a birdie on the 16th followed by an eagle on the next helped him sign for a closing 71 and get to 16 under 272.
That gave him a two-shot victory over Luiten and Stone and banished the memory of the Maybank Championship Malaysia, where he came into the final round with a three-shot lead but made two double-bogeys in his last three holes to finish in a share of second.

It was incredible - Lee
The 22 year old finished in the top three on his European Tour debut at the UBS Hong Kong

"I got a big chance in Malaysia but I didn't make it because I was really, really nervous. Now I made it," he said
"Yesterday I was really, really nervous. We had a lot of break times

"First time European Tour winner in just six events. It was really incredible. I really, really want to play Europe so it's good for me."
Over nine hours of play had been lost on the first four days due to electrical activity and heavy rain, resulting in the first Monday finish at a regular European Tour event since the 2011 Singapore Open.
Another hour was lost on the fifth morning due to fog but when play got under way at 7.30am, Frenchman Levy's first shot was a missed birdie putt on the 13th while England's Slattery and South African Stone both missed their birdie efforts on the 14th.
Dutchman Luiten made his par putt on the 16th, so Lee and Levy both stayed at 14 under through 13 holes, Slattery was on the same score through 14, with playing partner Stone, Luiten and Hend - in the clubhouse with a 66 - a shot further back.
Stone made the first move with a four-foot birdie putt on the 15th and he replaced Slattery in the group at 14 under with the Englishman making a bogey after finding trouble off the tee.

Luiten then rolled in a ten-footer on the last to sign for a blemish-free 68 and finish at 14 under but Lee was soon one ahead of that after putting his approach to 15 feet on the 16th.
Lee double-bogeyed the par five 17th after going for the green in two in the third round but he found it this time and rolled in his eagle putt to take a three-shot lead up the last.
Levy had found the water to bogey the same hole and while Lee dropped a shot on the last, he completed his victory with the minimum of fuss.
Stone signed for a 68 to join Luiten, who enjoyed a sixth top ten in nine events on, 14 under, with Levy and Slattery both signing for 71s to finish in a tie for fourth alongside Australian Hend.
Welshman Bradley Dredge was then at 11 under, a shot clear of Spaniard Nacho Elvira, Swede Rikard Karlberg, Dane Thorbjørn Olesen and two-time Major Championship winner Bubba Watson

Scot Campbell makes winning pro debut on

1836 Tour at Vale of Llangollen with a 69

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Scotland amateur international Ryan Campbell from Falkirk Golf Club, playing in his first event as a professional, won on the 1836 Tour at The Vale of Llangollen, Wales today with a three under par 69.

Campbell, pictured, won by one shot from in-form Joe Dean from Hillsborough GC and local player Rhodri Fieldhouse from Wrexham.
The first three holes at Llangollen are good birdie chances and despite three pars Campbell played the next five holes in level  3s and birdied the 11th to go to five under par on a day of freezing cold temperatures and a stiff breeze.
After back-to-back bogeys at the 12th and 13th, Campbell reeled off  five solid pars to lead on 69.
Dean had six birdies in his round of two under  70 to share second place with Fieldhouse.
Tom Perry and James Maw shared fourth on 71.
The next 1836 Tour event is at Dunham Forest on Tuesday, May 3 and 4. There are few than 20 places to be filled.

Dundonald Links to host AAM Scottish Open for first time
next year

FROM SCOTTISHGOLF WEBSITE
Dundonald Links in North Ayrshire will host the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open for the first time in 2017.
Located near the town of Irvine, Dundonald Links – which is undergoing major renovation works – will follow on from Castle Stuart Golf Links, the host venue for the 34th edition of Scotland’s national Open from July 7-10, 2016.
The stunning 7,100-yard, par 72 layout was designed by the highly-acclaimed golf course architect Kyle Phillips, whose creations also include Kingsbarns, one of the three venues for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, and The Grove, which will host the British Masters supported by Sky Sports for the first time this year.
Since being acquired by Loch Lomond Golf Club in February 2003, Dundonald Links has played host to numerous professional and amateur tournaments, including the European Tour Qualifying School First Stage, a qualifier for the Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex and, most recently, the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open, which returns to Dundonald Links this year.
After hosting the 2015 Ladies Scottish Open, which featured World Number One Lydia Ko and Solheim Cup player Suzann Pettersen, the club’s owners devised plans for a structural overhaul which included the construction of a new clubhouse, scheduled for completion at the end of 2016.
On the course itself, under the guidance of Kyle Phillips, several of the greens have been increased in size and three of the putting surfaces have been levelled in selected areas to soften their contours, thereby providing organisers with more options when setting up for tournament play.
Keith Pelley, Chief Executive of the European Tour, said: “We are delighted to announce that the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open will be staged at Dundonald Links in 2017. Following this year’s tournament at Castle Stuart in the north, this will ensure that Scotland’s national Open is showcased as widely as possible across the country.
“Special thanks goes to our two partners in the Scottish Open – the title sponsors Aberdeen Asset Management, and the Scottish Government – whose joint vision and commitment to improve and expand this great tournament has enabled us to make this announcement today.
“We also extend our gratitude to everyone at Dundonald Links for the work they have done at the golf club, and the work that they continue to do. I know all our Members will look forward to the challenge the course will present to them next July.”
Martin Gilbert, Chief Executive of Aberdeen Asset Management, said: “Since becoming title sponsors of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open in 2012, it has been our ambition to complete the geographical spread of the tournament by taking it to Scotland’s west coast following successful events at Castle Stuart, Royal Aberdeen and Gullane.
" We are therefore delighted with today’s announcement confirming the stunning Dundonald Links as the host venue in 2017.”

Rory McIlroy opts to play French Open

instead of  WGC-Bridgestone Invitational

The US  PGA Tour, in its bid to accommodate the Olympics in its schedule, ran afoul of the European Tour for scheduling the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational a month earlier and opposed the French Open.
It will pay a price for having done so, as Rory McIlroy, No. 3 in the World Ranking, is opting to play the French Open,
McIlroy's decision will come as a huge boost for the European Tour which was annoyed by the US PGA Tour moving the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational into the same week as the French Open, continental Europe's oldest national championship.
“I feel that playing in the 100th Open de France at Le Golf National will be the best way to get ready for The Open, which is just two weeks after the French Open,” McIlroy told the official European Tour website.
