Syme leads by two from McIntosh

at Battle Trophy halfway stage

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Drumoig's Connor Syme, one of three joint leaders on one-under-par 71 in the first round, took up the pole position on his own with a second-round, two-under-par 70 - the joint lowest score so far in the 72-hole Battle Trophy over Crail Golfing Society's Craighead Links.
Early finisher Syme set the halfway clubhouse target in this weekend's SGU Order of Merit event with a three-under-par tally of 141 and  at one stage led by four shots from Walker Cup player and past Scottish amateur champion Grant Forrest (Craigielaw) 73-72 for 145.
Forrest was demoted to third place late in the day when Euan McIntosh (Dubai) started with an eagle 3 and added birdies at the seventh, eighth and 16th on his way to a 70 for 143 - only two shots behind Syme.
Syme and McIntosh were the only players to be under par at halfway.
Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie), winner of last weekend's Craigmillar Park Open play-off,  did not look to be on course for a double whammy. He has had scores of 79 and 72 for 151, 10 shots off the pace.
Gordon Munro (Fraserburgh) and Fraser Davren (Williamwood), joint leaders with Syme after the first round, could not maintain the pressure. Munro had a 75 for 146 while Davren sagged to a 77 for 148.
The halfway cut to the leading 40 and ties fell at 155, those players with 36-hole tallies of 156 failing to make it to Sunday's third and fourth rounds.

DAVID ROY WRITES:
Connor Syme (Drumoig) continued to show good form with his second round score of 70 that included birdies at 1, 2, 3, 8, 10, 12 and 15. He dropped shots on 5, 16 and 17 and endured a double on the 9th, a hole proving to be difficult, despite measuring only 375 yards.
Grant Forrest (Craigielaw) birdied 1, 6, 10, 16 and eagled the 8th but bogeyed 4, 13, 17 and finished with a double on 18.
James Wilson (Balmore) improved on his morning round by six strokes, helped by eagles on 1 and 13, and birdies on 6, 10, 16. His only dropped shots came at 9 and 18.
Sandy Scott (Nairn) bettered his morning round by eight shots, which included a flawless front nine, with birdies at 1 and 3, and no dropped shots. His birdies continued on 10 and 16 before he faded with bogeys at 17 and 18.
Gordon Munro (Fraserburgh) was out in level par and remained so until a triple bogey at the last hole undid much of his hard work to finish with 75.
Last in was Euan McIntosh (Els Club, Dubai), who got off to a flyer with an eagle at the first, and birdied 7,  8 and 16, dropping shots at 3, 6 and 17 to card a splendid 70, leaving him just two behind the leader.

Syme, Munro and Davren share first-round

lead on one-under 71 at Battle Trophy

By DAVID ROY
As golfers all over Scotland were scraping frost from their car windscreens, the early starters in the Battle Trophy were undeterred by the bitter north wind, posting scores that marked them as serious contenders for this weekend's 72-hole SGU Order of Merit counter over the Craighead Links of Crail Golfing Society.

First in was Dan Lawrence (Balumbie Castle), with birdies at 2, 11 and 12 cancelling out a bogey at 5 and a double at 9 giving him a  72.
This was bettered by the first of three-under-par 71s that jointly headed the field at the end of the first-round.
Local man Connor Syme (Drumoig), pictured, failed to master the hard par threes, with a double at 5 and a bogey at 17 but hr more than made up for this with birdies at 1, 6, 10, 15 for a 71.
The second 71 of the day came from Gordon Munro (Fraserburgh), who had one blemish with a bogey at the notoriously difficult 17th but birdied 6, 10 and 15.
The third man with a 71, Fraser Davren (Williamwood), was one of the last to tee off and his adventures included birdies at 2, 8, 10, 11 and 16, compensating for bogeys  at the relatively short 3, 9, 12 and 15. Walker Cup man Grant Forrest (Craigielaw) is handily placed on 73 but the winner at Craigmiller Park Open last weekend, Graeme Robertson (Glenbrervie) has much work to do after a 79 left him +7.

SPANISH OPEN AT REAL VALDERRAMA

Lorenzo-Vera leads by one as Scots struggle

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Frenchman Mike Lorenzo-Vera will take a one-shot lead into the final day of the Real Club Valderrama Open de España as he goes in search of a first European Tour title.
On another day of tough scoring conditions in south-east Spain, only Joost Luiten and Alex Noren managed to record under-par rounds as Valderrama threatened to produce the first over-par winner of a European Tour event for a long time.
Lorenzo-Vera's level par round of 71 saw him stay at one over par 214 and lead from Luiten, two-time Major Championship winner Martin Kaymer and England's Andrew Johnston.

The Frenchman produced the highlight of the day as he holed his approach to the par five 17th for an eagle to spark a wild celebration and move him two ahead, before a bogey on the last cut the gap.
"I'm very excited," he said. "I'm going to have a big nap tonight because it takes so much energy to stay patient here.
"I'm just going to try to relax and enjoy it as much as I can tomorrow.
"I'm just trying to look at the pace of the leaderboard and accept that you're going to have a lot of bogeys here. A bogey on the hole is never really a bad score so you just try to accept it. Take the bogey and get out of there."
The 31-year-old Frenchman was number one on The Challenge Tour in 2007 and enjoyed his best ever European Tour season last term, finishing 78th on The Race to Dubai, but he will face a tough challenge on Sunday.
Dutchman Luiten is the only player in the field with two under par rounds this week and already has four top tens to his name this season, while Kaymer is an 11-time winner on The European Tour.
Johnston has held the lead on several occasions this week and will be brimming with confidence as he goes in search of a first European Tour win.
Defending champion James Morrison signed for a 74 to sit at three over alongside fellow Englishman Ross Fisher, with Spanish duo Pablo Larrazábal and Pep Angles a further shot back.
Lorenzo-Vera reached the turn in 35 before a birdie on the 12th thanks to a stunning flop-shot got him to level par and, when Johnston bogeyed the same hole, he found himself in a share of the lead for the first time.
All those at the top of the leaderboard were falling back and Lorenzo-Vera did the same with bogeys on the 15th and 16th, but his spectacular hole-out on the 17th catapulted him ahead before his disappointing finish.
Johnston had been battling for top spot with overnight leader Larrazábal in the early stages and held the lead on his own after birdies on the fifth and 11th but three bogeys in a row from the 12th saw him fall back.
Kaymer twice got to level par with back-to-back birdies on the fourth and fifth, and tenth and 11th, but both times gave the advantage back, while Luiten registered five birdies and four bogeys.
Fisher overcame a double-bogey on the 12th in his 72, while Morrison also fought back well after turning in 38.
Larrazábal endured a frustrating afternoon as he carded a 78, with Angles' 74 enough to get him a shot ahead of Thomas Bjørn, Richard Bland, Alejandro Cañizares and Noren.
SCOTSWATCH. It was not a good day for the Scots in the field. Craig Lee had the best Scottish round of 76, followed by Richie Ramsay and David Drysdale with 77s and Paul Lawrie with 79.

behind winner Ben Parker in Morocco

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Ellon's Ross Cameron, the first-round leader with a 66, finished tied fifth after adding two one-over-par rounds of 72 for a 54-hole final total of three-under 210 in the Open Royal Golf Anfa at Mohammedia Royal Golf Club, Morocco today (Saturday).
Cameron, who is sponsored by Saltire Energy, had a double bogey 6 with "bunker issues" at the 12th in his final round but finished on a high with birdies at the 13th and 14th to make joint fifth place and collect 1,213 euros.
Winner by one stroke was Englishman Ben Parker with scores of 69, 71 and 66 for seven-under 206 to win the first prize of 5,000 euros.
Chris Robb (Meldrum House), the only other Scot apart from Cameron, to qualify for the final round, finished tied 36th on 219 with rounds of 70, 74 and 75. He earned 307 euros.
After birdieing the seventh and ninth, Robb had a poor finish with bogeys at the 11th, 12th, 15th and 16th.

World Golf Ranking circuit

NEWS RELEASE FROM MENA TOUR
DUBAI— The growing strength of the MENA (Middle East, North Africa) Golf Tour has been recognised at the highest level with the Governing Board of the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) giving its nod to award the ranking status to its members.
Coinciding with golf’s return to the Olympic Games this year after more than a century, the landmark decision, taken during a governing board’s meeting held on the sidelines of the 2016 Masters Tournament in Augusta, will provide a fresh energy boost for the development of sport across the board in the region.
With the ranking system coming into effect at the Ras Al Khaimah Classic, starting on May 2 at Tower Links Golf Club, the MENA Golf Tour has become the 19th Eligible Golf Tour from around the world in what is seen as validation of the vast potential of the tour in the region.
We are really delighted about this recognition, a major step forward for a tour which aims to maximise the region’s enormous potential for golf. The tour is now complete in every sense of the word, one that will open the door to new horizons,” said Darren Clarke, the Patron of the tour.
“The MENA region is an increasingly important market for the game as a lot of fresh talent coming up through the ranks over the last few years. With each tour event carrying world ranking points, the momentum will only pick up pace,” said Clarke, the 2016 European Ryder Cup captain.
“From my experience I can tell this tour is the fastest growing professional golf tour in the world. With all the prize money, new destinations and OWGR points, I think this is going to go in one direction,” he added.

Luke Donald and Russell Knox one shot off

Heritage lead

Luke Donald and Russell Knox are one shot off the lead at the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head in South Carolina.
Former world number one Donald, 38, shared the lead after the opening round but a level-par round of 71 for the Englishman on Friday saw him reach halfway on five under at Hilton Head.
Scotland's Knox, 30, shot a six-under 65 to join Donald in tied fourth.
World number one Jason Day and Americans Kevin Chappell and Charley Hoffman share the lead on six under.
Knox, who won his first PGA tournament at the WGC-HSBC Champions event in November, shot eight birdies in his 66, the best round of the day.
Donald is without a PGA or European Tour win since 2012, but was on two under for his round heading into the back nine before double bogeying the par-three 14th.
American Patton Kizzire sank a 41-foot putt to make birdie on the 18th and join Knox and Donald on five under par.
England's Greg Owen and Ian Poulter made the cut, but Paul Casey and Matthew Fitzpatrick missed out on three over par.
