Teenagers Marco Penge and Sophie Lamb

win Sunningdale Foursomes

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Two 17-year-olds, Scottish men's open amateur stroke play champion Marco Penge (Goodwood) and Lancashire's up and coming star Sophie Lamb (Clitheroe), this afternoon capped their week's outstandng run in the prestigious Sunningdale Foursomes by winning the title at the Ascot venue.

They beat  Lewis Atkinson (Gerrards Cross) and Scott Marshall (Lambourne) by 5 and 4 in the final after establishing a three-hole lead by the 12th.
Penge and Lamb's toughest match was in the first round when they squeezed through at the 20th hole.
They did not have to play the last two holes in all the ties that followed during the week.
Nerves were not a factor for a pair of youngsters who have already tasted far more success by the age of 18 than most players enjoy in a lifetime.

Peter Smith T10 with two rounds to play in
 New Zealand Open

NEWS RELEASE

Australian Matt Griffin and Japan’s Hideto Tanihara looked set to lead into the weekend until rookie tour pro Deyen Lawson stormed home to tie them after two rounds at the BMW ISPS HANDA New Zealand Open.
Playing at The Hills today, Griffin reeled off two eagles, four birdies and just one bogey to post 7-under 65 in the morning to be 8-under the card.
Meanwhile over at Millbrook Resort, also in the morning, Hideto Tanihara, an 11 time winner on the Japan Golf Tour, fired 5-under the card to join Griffin on top of the leaderboard.
With the afternoon field failing to ignite and no challengers moving into contention it looked like it would be Griffin and Tanihara leading into the weekend.
But Victorian Deyen Lawson had other ideas, charging home with three birdies on his closing three holes to fire 7-under 65 and join the top of the table.
Lawson, who completed his PGA Traineeship last year, isn’t overawed on the big stage, using the beauty of Queenstown to distract him from what’s at stake.
Sitting two shots behind the leading trio is New Zealand’s great hope, Steven Alker. It’s been 13 years since a Kiwi has won their National Open but Alker isn’t feeling any pressure.  He fired 5-under 67 playing The Hills this morning.
The second round cut was made at even par with 61 Professionals making the weekend rounds.
Aberdeenshire man Peter Smith, at 56 the oldest player in the field, beat the cut comfortably and is tied 10th on 139 (70-69) with two rounds to play.
Smith, a former New Zealand club pros champion and winner of the British PGA seniors title in 2011, is also a former Northern Open champion. He has divided his golfing career between Scotland, the Netherlands and New Zealand.

Scott Jamieson plummets from 66 to 76,

makes the cut on limit mark

  ASIAN TOUR NEWS RELEASE

Hua Hin, Thailand: Big-hitting Scott Hend equalled the course record of eight-under-par 64 to earn a share of the halfway lead with Sweden’s Pelle Edberg at the True Thailand Classic today.

The Aussie, a seven-time Asian Tour winner, rode on an eagle and six birdies in the second round at a sun-kissed Black Mountain Golf Club for a 12-under-par 132 total which was matched by Edberg, who came home in 67.

Thailand’s Panuphol Pittayarat charged into contention with a 65 in the US$1.75 million event co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour to lie one back while Black Mountain resident Malaysia-based Scot Simon Yates, 2014 Asian Tour Order of Merit winner David Lipsky of the United States, South African Shaun Norris, Welshman Rhys Davies and overnight leader Peter Uihlein of the US are among those bunched on 135.

A week after finishing on the bottom of the leaderboard with a 22-over-par total at the WGC-Cadillac Champiionship in Doral, the 42-year-old Hend put himself in contention again with a sublime performance where he hit all 18 greens in regulation.

“Yeah, it’s good to get into position once again, we’ll see happens,” said Hend, who finished tied second here last season.
“I like this course, I like coming to Thailand as it’s a friendly place. After a lacklustre effort last week, we’ll see what comes now. I played atrociously, drove the ball poorly, putted poorly. I was very disappointed with my performance last week. I just want to do something for myself (this week).”

With the par 72, 7,492-yard Black Mountain course suited for the bombers, Hend is determined to take advantage of his length again over the weekend after swapping drivers.

“I have a few driver worries and I’ve been messing about a little bit. I used a different putter every day around Doral too as I wasn’t putting very well either. This is golf, we all go through it. We put putters in buckets of water hoping they behave the next day!” said the Aussie.
Scott Jamieson, in third place overnight after an opening round of six-under-par 66, fell from grace with a four-over 76 for 142 and made the cut with nothing to spare.

The halfway cut was set at 142 with title holder Andrew Dodt of Australia, Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez amongst those missing the weekend action.
