It was a rare 1-2-3 all-amateur finish with Edzell's Gary Tough and Jim Watt sharing second place on 74.

South African amateur championship
Top seed Rory Franssen beaten in first round
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
It
was pride before a fall for No 1 seed Rory Franssen in the first
match-play round of the South African men's amateur golf championship at
George Golf Club today (TUESDAY).
Franssen,
17, from Inverness, awarded the Proudfoot Trophy (pictured below) on Monday as the
winner of the 36-hole stroke-play eliminator, was beaten by one hole by
Gauteng North’s Philip Kruze
The South African was naturally
delighted with his win over the Scot who had rounds of 64 and 68 to head
the 64 qualifiers. Kruze was the 64th qualifier.
“I’m
very pleased considering how well Rory played in the stroke play
qualifier," said Kruze.
"He didn’t play his best today and I capitalised on that. I
also didn’t play brilliant golf but it got me through.”
Scott
Gibson (Southerness) was another to lose in the first round but three
Scots are through to the round of the last 32 - Sandy Scott (Nairn),
Calum Fyfe (Cawder) and No 2 seed Craig Ross (Kirkhill).
Nairn teenager Scott, the 2015 SGU Boys' Order of Merit winner, held his
nerve to win by a hole against Andre Nel, while Kirkhill’s Ross had
a 2 and 1 triumph over James Pennington. Fyfe won by 3 and 2 against David Amm from Zimbabwe.
The Scottish trio are seeking to add to become the fourth Scot in the last six years to lift trophy.
Gibson lost by 3 and 2 to James du Preez (Pretoria) in the last first-round match to finish.

Elliot Rowan funeral at Dundee Crematorium on Thursday
The
funeral of retired PGA Professional and Honorary Member, Elliot Rowan,
will take place at Dundee Crematorium (McAlpine Road, Dundee, DD3 8SD) on
Thursday, March 3 at 3.30 pm.
All of Elliot’s friends and colleagues are welcome to attend.
Shona Malcolm
Secretary – The PGA in Scotland

Tributes have been paid to Elliot Rowan, one of Scotland’s foremost golf coaches, who died in hospital in his mid-80s.
Rowan played his amateur golf at Clydebank and District GC before serving his PGA training under John Jacobs at Sandy Lodge in Hertfordshire.
His other attachements included clubs in both Germany and the Netherlands, Billingham in Teesside and Douglas Park in Bearsden.
He held coaching posts with the Scottish Golf Union and Scottish Ladies Golfing Association at different times before becoming involved in the golf programme at St Leonards School in his native St Andrews.
“Elliot was the first real coach I ever had,” said Callum Macaulay, who first worked with him at the age of 14 before going on to become Scottish amateur champion and also part of the first Scotland team to win the world men's amateur championship Eisenhower Trophy.
“Elliot was a lovely guy and even in the latter stages of his life, he would still stand and watch me hit balls whenever I was in St Andrews. He is a big loss to the Scottish golfing world.”
Reflecting on his career after he became involved in the St Leonards programme, Rowan once said: “During my years teaching golf I have found one of the most satisfying aspects is to watch the enthusiasm of the young golfers as they progress in competence and ability.”
