Jamie Bower scorches to a second South Africa win
England’s Jamie Bower has scored his second win in South Africa, with a hot putter giving him a three-stroke victory in the Southern Cape Open at Mossel Bay.
The 22-year-old from Meltham, Yorkshire, beat par in each of the four rounds, finishing on 12-under to take the trophy. His closest challenger was South Africa’s Jovan Rebula on nine-under while the third placed players were a further three shots back.
“My putter was really hot all week and I think that's the biggest reason why I was able to score well,” said Bower. “Also it was quite windy all week and I think that gave us English players a slight advantage over the locals as we’re more used to it.”
It’s just three weeks since Bower won the North Gauteng Open at Irene Golf Club and his two wins sandwich a third place finish in the African Amateur at Leopard Creek.
He said: “This win is even more pleasing to me than the last one. To say I’m struggling with my swing is probably the wrong word, but I certainly wasn't on it, tee to green, as I was at Irene a few weeks ago. It was mainly my putter that did the damage this time. So, to still win, despite not quite being at my best with my long game, is really satisfying for me.”
In the Southern Cape Open Bower was one shot off the pace going into the final round, having scored two-under 70 followed by 68, 70. “One shot behind with 18 to play is nothing, especially with the wind blowing,” he remarked.
“My main goal for the final round was to not make any big mistakes. I knew there was a good chance that other players around me would fall away so I just tried to keep my ball in play as often as I could and let the birdies take care of themselves.”
He got to the turn in one-under and flew home in 33 for another 68, with birdies on 13, 16 and 17 putting him out of reach of his challengers.
He added: “I do seem to like it over here! The warm weather is very much a feel good factor, so that helps. I put a lot of work into my game leading up to this tour and it's nice to see some reward for that.”
Bower is part of an England Golf squad touring South Africa, alongside Paul Kinnear (Formby) and Alfie Plant (Sundridge Park). They have two more events to play: the Cape Province Open on 23-25 February at Kingswood Golf Estate and the South African Amateur, 28 Feb-4 March at George Golf Club.

South Korean Lee takes three-shot lead in

Malaysia with a third-round 64

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Soomin Lee, playing in just his second European Tour event, will take a three-shot lead into Sunday's final round of the Maybank Championship Malaysia.
Lee, 22, only turned professional in 2014 and has made just 12 appearances on the Asian Tour, but will now face the biggest round of his fledgling career so far on Sunday at Royal Selangor Golf Club, Kuala Lumpur.
The South Korean finished in a tie for third at the UBS Hong Kong Open in October, and once again proved he is very comfortable in this elite company as a stunning burst of birdies after the turn propelled him to a seven under par round of 64.
That moved him to 15 under for the week, three shots clear of Marcus Fraser, who carded a blemish-free 66.
Fraser’s fellow Australian Nathan Holman was then at 11 under after a 73 which included a triple bogey on the last hole, where his approach shot found the lake guarding the green.
Spaniard Jorge Campillo, Japan’s Masahiro Kawamura and Filipino Miguel Tabuena are all five shots off the lead in a share of fourth.
Key quotes

Soomin Lee: “It was very exciting. I had a good feeling this week because I like playing on this course. I hit many important iron shots today. I tried to putt close to the hole but it went in so I gained some confidence on the greens.

" I’m trying to enjoy my game and focus on my own game. If I keep my ball on the fairway then it will be good for me to try and score.
“I didn’t look at the scoreboard. I was really enjoying my round. After making birdie, I gain more confidence and continue to make more birdies. I feel a little bit nervous thinking about the final round but I will try my best.

" This weekend will be very good for my golf life. On this course, it is very important to keep calm on 16, 17 and 18. If I can keep it on the fairway then I will have a chance.”

Marcus Fraser:
“I played really well the first two days, but today I was a little bit off. But I managed to scramble on a few holes, and get away with some pars which is key on this course. The up and down on the last was pretty key, it was a straightforward putt – even though it was from 15 feet.

"I knew the line was a ball outside left and down grain, the key was just to make sure I got it there and luckily it had just enough legs.

Nathan Holman: “I played pretty scrappy golf. I then had a chance to finish quite close to the lead and played quite nicely on the back nine, so it's lucky you don't win golf tournaments on a Saturday. There was still a lot of good, there wasn't too much bad, there was a few bogeys so still lots of good, plenty of positives to take and I'll move on tomorrow.
“I tried to get as close as I could to the lead if not stay in the lead. I fell back but it's still a good position so I'm looking forward to tomorrow. Four shots on Sunday is not too many.”
