WILL PORTER FINDS FORM LATE IN

 SOUTH AFRICA

Will Porter from Carnoustie, last year's Scottish U18 match-play champion, found the form that won him that national title over the last nine holes of his second round in the Southern Cape Open amateur golf tournament at Mossel Bay Golf Club, South Africa today (Friday).
Porter, pictured, who had a two-over-par 74 in the first round, struggled over the first nine of his second circuit, taking 41 blows (five bogeys, four pars), but then it call came together and he covered the inward half in one-under-par 35 with a birdie 2 at the short 12th and eight par figures.
Porter's 150 tally has him in joint 59th place - 13 strokes behind the South African joint leaders, Jason Smith (71-66) and Alex Van Wyk (69-68), on 137.
Leading the English challenge are Alfie Plant (71-73) and Nic Elliot (71-73), joint 21st on 144.
Carnoustie's second representative in the field, Jamie Connolly had a No Return after an 81 in the first round.

SOUTH AFRICAN NEWS RELEASE
Scotland claimed a comprehensive victory in the seventh International Triangular against the South African Golf Association’s Junior Team and the South African Golf Development Board at The Wanderers Golf Club this week.
The eight members of the Scottish Golf Union National Squad rallied to triumph on 16.5 pts, while the SA Junior finished second on 11.5 pts and the Development Board third with 8pts.
For the SAGDB, who amassed eight points, there was great cause for celebration.

The Scots were the favourites starting the three-way competition after a superb victory in the team  ompetition at the inaugural African Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Leopard Creek Golf Estate.
The Scots marched to a 3.5 lead against the SA Juniors and a 4 – 0 lead against the SAGDB in the morning foursomes.
The singles, however, produced tight contests, but the Scots continued to stamp their authority with some inspired shot-making.
Scott Gibson defeated Aneurin Gounden 2 and 1 and Jamie Savage beat Luca Filippi by one hole.
Sandy Scott and Callum Fyfe both gained halves in their respective matches against Luke Mayo and Keelan van Wyk to tidy up a 6.5 – 5.5 victory over the SA Juniors.
The Scots won all but two matches against the SAGDB, but Nomads National Order of Merit champion Franklin Manchest and Fezekile Kana prevented a whitewash.
Manchest beat Callum Fyfe by one hole and Kana handed Scottish champion Bob McIntyre a 5 and 4 defeat.

NE Alliance foursomes switch from two-day

match-play to 18 holes of better-ball stroke-play

By JOEL HOPWOOD
There has been a format change to the North-east Alliance Championship foursomes which immediately follow the second round of the championship at Craibstone next month.
It is born out of the lack of pro-amateur availability for three days in a row in March and is detailed below.

CHANGES TO FOURSOMES FORMAT
The 36 hole qualifying process will remain the same, being played

on the 9th and 16th of March - but we will only have one additional
stroke-play round that week instead of several match-play ties.

Typically we would try to find professionals to join amateurs in a

foursomes knock-out match-play format over the Thursday and

Friday - but this proved problematic as professionals were

invariably away/busy/working and it is a big ask to request that

any of the Alliance (amateur or pro) take three days off in a single

week.
Our new format will be an eight-team four-ball better-ball stroke-play competition over 18 holes.
There will be eight qualifiers from each section and one of each will make up each team, i.e.
1st Professional, 8th Lowest Scratch Amateur, 1st Class 1 Nett Qualifier and 8th Class 2 Nett Qualifier will make up team one. Team two will be 2nd Professional, 7th Lowest Scratch, 2nd Class 1 Nett Qualifier and 7th Class 2 Nett Qualifier and so on until we have our eight teams.
The teams will play 18 holes of four-ball better-ball at Craibstone from 10.30am on March 17. The format will require the best two nett scores to count on each hole from each team. Each individual will receive their full handicap allowance.
The prizefund will be £900. Each player from the winning team will receive £100 (in cash or voucher). Each player from the runner up team will receive £75 (in cash or voucher) and each player from the third placed team will receive £50 (in cash or voucher).
It is hoped that this new format will give us much more chance of representation from each category and allow people to get back to work on the Friday.
Joint secretaries David Wilson and David Mackay will have to be informed over the two rounds of the championship (March 9 and 16) if you are available or not to play in the better-ball on Thursday, March 17.

Aussie Holtman leads by two at Malaysia

halfway after late birdie surge

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Nathan Holman will take a two-shot lead into the weekend of the Maybank Championship Malaysia after a late birdie surge at Royal Selangor Golf Club, Kuala Lumpur.
The 24 year old has dropped just one shot so far this week, and followed up his opening round of 64 with a 65 on Friday to move clear of Richard Bland, who also registered a 65.
Holman was playing in just his 16th European Tour event when he won the Australian PGA Championship in December, and is now in the running to make it two wins in his first 20 appearances.
Bland, in contrast, is looking for his first win at the 378th attempt, but the Englishman has yet to make a bogey this week and has made a steady start to the season, securing a tie for seventh place in the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.
Australian Holman followed his win on the Gold Coast with two solid efforts in the Desert Swing, and he is now aiming for a victory outside of his homeland as he looks to move up the Official World Golf Ranking.
In-form Englishman Danny Willett leads a host of challengers in a share of third place on eight under par after the World Number 13 added a round of 69 to his opening 65.

Key quotes
Nathan Holman: “Today was just as good [as yesterday]. When I saw I was three or shots clear after the turn there were a few nerves, but I handled myself really well and managed to pick up a couple of birdies coming in.
“I putted really well today. I’ve been working on my alignment for the past couple of weeks, and it definitely seems to be paying off. It’s made a big difference, and my putts are rolling really nicely now.
“After winning at home my next aim was to win a tournament overseas, so it’s great to have the chance to tick that one off the list so soon. Then looking further ahead, getting into the top 100 in the World Ranking is a realistic aim.”
Richard Bland: “I’m very pleased, obviously. To go round here without dropping a shot in two days takes some doing. Hopefully I can continue the run going over the weekend.
“I’ve struck my irons as well as I have for some time. I also picked up a new Taylor Made driver in Dubai, and it’s added 15 yards to my drives. When you’ve got a shorter club in your hand, you can try to be a bit more aggressive.”
Danny Willett: “I’m struggling a bit with my body. My energy levels collapsed on the back nine, and I started making a few silly mistakes. But the flags were also quite tricky today and the wind’s picking up a bit, so I can’t see the scoring being too ridiculous. And I would’ve taken eight under after two rounds.
“I probably hit four or five different tee shots to what I did yesterday, mainly due to the wind direction and also the in positions.

" So it’s a brilliant golf course in that respect, because you don’t have to move the tees around too much to change the hole, if you change the flags it can still affect what you do from the tee. So I love the design. You can still be aggressive and take the hole on if you want, but if you hit it in the rough you lose all control for your second shot. So it really makes you think out there.”

'I won at 46, so can you, Catriona,'

says Jack Nicklaus

LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR NEWS RELEASE
From Bethan Cutler, LET Media Manager
Jack Nicklaus, the most famous 46-year-old to ever have won a golf tournament, has given Catriona Matthew - 47 in August -  his full backing in her quest for a second ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open title.

Twenty years after she won the event at Yarra Yarra that kick-started her wonderful career, the North Berwick veteran is in the mix to win the tournament again on a packed leaderboard at The Grange in Adelaide.

Nicklaus, holder of a record 18 major titles, famously won the Masters in 1986 at the same age, and today offered Matthew his support to follow suit.

“Hang in there, Catriona, and don’t give up, finish strong! Everyone wrote me off at 46!” Nicklaus tweeted.

Mathew, who shares the lead at eight under with England’s Holly Clyburn, wasn’t daunted by her birth certificate a full 20 years after she won the Patricia Bridges Bowl at Yarra Yarra in 1996.

"I think that's the beauty of golf, you can play, it doesn't matter what your age is as long as you can hit the golf ball and still get it in the hole,'' she said. "Age isn't a barrier.''

China's Xi Yu Lin, Germany's Caroline Masson, South Korean Jenny Shin and Japan's Haru Nomura are next best at seven under after a day marked by tough afternoon conditions.

A host of elite players remain in contention, with local hopes headed by five-time winner Karrie Webb at six under, just two shots from the lead.

Webb played before enormous, adoring crowds in her first visit to play in Adelaide since she was a teenage amateur, but Australia's top-ranked player Minjee Lee endured a tough day and a 76 left her just inside the cut line at two over.
World No.1 Lydia Ko is four shots back after a second-round 70, still nicely poised after what she regarded as a "tough day'' on the course.

Ko, the defending champion, said the breezy conditions made it tough to decide whether to attack or play safe.
World No.9 Ha Na Jang, of South Korea, is three from the lead after a 70, and world No.11 Brooke MacKenzie Henderson, of Canada, also has remained in contention at three under.

First-round leader SooBin Kim fell away, adding a 77 to her opening course record 63, leaving her tied 11th at four under.

Among those prominent players to miss the two-over-par cut were American Cheyenne Woods and England's Dame Laura Davies; 77 players will play into the weekend.
