Langer doesn't miss anchored putter as he

shoots 11 birdies at Chubb Classic

Bernhard Langer
Bernhard Langer ( Associated Press )
NAPLES, Florida – So much for all the doom and gloom that Bernhard Langer suddenly would go to pieces without an anchored putter. The German poured in 11 birdies – one off the US PGA Champions Tour record – en route to a 10-under 62 and a four stroke lead over Jay Haas after the first round of the Chubb Classic.
“He’s like a Rolls Royce,” Jim Thorpe said. “He just keeps rolling along.”
Langer fiddled with two putters last night and again this morning on the practice putting green before deciding to stick with the long putter and employing a legal, unanchored stroke.
“It was the right decision, I think,” he said.
Langer, who is seeking his 26th title on the over-50 circuit, took just 23 putts today and had two separate strings of five birdies in a row in tying the low first-round score here. He missed two putts from 6 feet or less, but countered with a 35-footer on 9 and a 40-footer at 17 for birdies.
“That’s a pretty amazing round,” Haas said, “I don’t care what course you’re playing on.
When Langer used the broomstick in Hawaii in January, some observers thought he was making a statement to golfers that the long putter didn’t need to be put out to pasture just because of the anchoring ban, which went into effect Jan. 1 (Rule 14-1b).
He said he will take advantage of the next month to perfect his craft, and could switch to using the Kuchar grip, which he used to win the 1993 Masters, or a conventional-length putter with an orthodox grip. (The next  Champions Tour event is not until March 18-20.)
“Am I enjoying it? Not really,” he said. “I’ve been putting for hours and hours the last 6 weeks. It’s distracting. All the time I’m putting into putting I could be putting into other things. I wish I didn’t have to change.”
The fact that he still is unsettled suggests none of the strokes is up to his standard – yet. Even after Friday’s sublime performance he remained on the fence about the rest of the tournament.
“There’s a chance I might still practise a little bit with my other putter, the Kuchar-style putter, because that doesn’t feel too bad either, and then decide again tomorrow morning what’s going to happen,” Langer said.

Schwartzel is on Tshwane Open leader's tail

after a 64 at Pretoria GC

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Charl Schwartzel fired a brilliant 64 to catapult himself into contention heading into the weekend at the Tshwane Open.
The ten-time European Tour winner had opened with a disappointing 71 but an eagle and four birdies today fired him up the leaderboard and he will head into round three just two shots behind leader Anthony Michael.
South African Michael battled his way to a 69 in the morning on another day of tough scoring at Pretoria Country Club and nobody could get past his seven under par total.
But countryman Schwartzel, already a winner this season at the Alfred Dunhill Championship, stole the show in the afternoon, and not even an hour and 37 minute weather delay late in the day could derail the 31 year old, who had to return to par the last upon the resumption.

Michael is playing in just his 22nd European Tour event but finished in a tie for second at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in the 2011 season and was named Rookie of the Year on The Sunshine Tour in 2010.
Schwartzel by contrast has those ten wins, including the 2011 Masters Tournament, and seven of his victories have come in his home country.
He had birdies on the first and ninth but his round came to life on the par five 12th as he reached the green with a driver and a three iron before rolling a 15-footer up the hill for eagle.
Another birdie followed on the next and when he chipped in on the 15th, Schwartzel was five under.
"I'm very, very pleased with the way I hit the golf ball today," he said. "It was a massive improvement to a few months ago.
"I didn't putt very well today, but I hit the ball beautifully.
"The greens are very difficult to read, and I didn't hit a lot of bad putts but it's frustrating when you miss six-footers and still shoot 64."

Michael turned in 33 but a bogey on the 11th dropped him back before he drained a brilliant long right-to-lefter on the 15th to get to eight under.
A disappointing bogey on the gettable 17th was to follow, but he had done enough to take the lead.

"I left a couple out there but made a few clutch putts so it was definitely steady putting.
"The breeze caught me out a bit and club selection off the tee boxes was what really got me today so I'll just get focused for tomorrow. I'll just stay in the moment, stay in the present."

Joburg Open winner Haydn Porteous was at four under after a 66, alongside fellow South African Theunis Spangenberg who signed for a 71, and American Daniel Im who registered a 68.
Another home favourite, Dylan Frittelli, registered a 69 in the morning to sit a further shot back, one ahead of countryman and overnight leader Justin Harding.
The four-time Sunshine Tour winner had recorded the ninth hole-in-one of the season on the 14th but also had a double, six bogeys and a birdie to sit alongside fellow South Africans Dean Burmester, Shaun Norris, Richard Sterne and Jaco Van Zyl, Swede Steven Jeppesen and Scot Jamie McLeary.

SCOTSWATCH (by Colin Farquharson)
Jamie McLeary held on to a top 10 place with a 70 for 138, giving him a tied seventh position at halfway.
David Law also had a 70 for 140 and T22.
Andrew McArthur (68-74) and Scott Hendry (68-74) are tied 39th on 142, one shot inside the cut mark.
Blairgowrie's Bradley Neil missed it with a 74 for 145 and joint 84th place.
Dunbar's David Drysdale shot a 71 but it was not low enough to make up for his first-round 75 and he bowed out in joint 97th position on 146

Golspie's elder statesman Jim Fraser dies at 92

By ROBIN WILSON
It is with sadness that I only learned of the death of Golspie golfer Jim Fraser, at the age of 92, a day after his funeral that took place on February 4 and further regret that I was not able to attend.

Golspie Golf Club has lost one of its elder statesmen who had given the club and his golf course over forty years of his life in roles of Committee member, Captain, President, Secretary and a dedicated member who had the foresight to build the new clubhouse further along the Ferry Road in 1967, for all of which he was eventually honoured with life membership.

The golf clubs also in the Counties of Sutherland, Caithness and Ross-shire can look back upon him as one of three pioneering golf administrators who introduced Winter Alliance Golf to their fixture cards  in 1965.  The trio, who discussed the idea of completive play beyond October when most golfers were putting their clubs away, were, Hugh Baillie of Brora, Eoin MacKintosh of Royal Dornoch and Jim Fraser representing Golspie Golf Club.  At the outset play was confined to Sutherland's three links courses, but eventually encompassed  Tain, Wick, Reay, Furness, Invergordon  and Tarbat Golf Courses.

Eoin “Tosh” MacKintosh took the role of secretary until his untimely death after just two seasons and his obvious replacement was Jim who had already taken over from Tosh the position of Sutherland County Cup secretary in addition to serving on the North District executive.

Jim Fraser was groomed into golf administration by Golspie's other golfing guru, Bert Sinclair, Sutherland's first North District President, and as I was already secretary of Brora Golf Club and had travelled in Jim's company to District AGMs, got groomed into succeeding him as Alliance and County Secretary.

But Jim's own golf did not suffer from all his admin work. His golfing pals (now also all sadly away): Hughie “Farr” Mackay, Alex Campbell, Douglas Robertson, Willie Andrew MacRae and Bobba Macrae all saw to that to that.
Jim, pictured above in 1986, had won the Golspie club championship in 1957 and went on to win twice more at at time when Donald Urquhart and Robbie MacRae were dominant.
With Robbie Macrae he led the Golspie team in the seriously contested inter-club matches against Brora and what a scalp when they beat Brora's No 1 pairing, Jim Miller and Ross Dawson.

He never missed a Golspie club outing to other courses in the North but the Buchan Firkin at Peterhead was always the first competition each year to be pencilled into the diary.
Another page would be required to relate all the tales that came back from Peterhead when there was no such thing as breathalysers and after liberal measures of his favourite tipple “Glenfiddoch” perhaps only now can we recall the ditching of the car as they made their way back home after another enjoyable round!
Thank you Jim for your help, advice and friendship, over many years. I hope others can reap what you sowed.

He had five birdies today but bogeyed the second, eighth and nine in 36 to the turn. Carnoustie Golf Links team gain award for

protecting ... bumblebees!

NEWS RELEASE
Carnoustie Golf Links, a regular host to The Open championship, has been awarded a major national accolade for its work in protecting native bumblebees.
Representatives of the club attended the annual Golf Environmental Awards held by the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) in Harrogate, where they received the prestigious Operation Pollinator Award.
The award was given in recognition of the work undertaken by Championship Course Head Greenkeeper, Craig Boath and his dedicated team who have developed habitats around the course that are suitable for bees and other pollinating insects.
The team was applauded for their approach to the project, which involved outreach events with local primary school children.
“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Craig Boath and his team for all the hard work they done in helping to curb the decline of our important pollinators,” said an STRI spokesperson.
“We were very impressed with Craig’s work, especially his initiative to involve local primary schools, making a real impact on the wider community, rather than just on the golf course.”
The Operation Pollinator Award is presented annually to the golf club that has shown success in developing pollen rich habitats in which native species of bumblebees and other insects can thrive.
Boath and his team have been working for five years to create insect and bee friendly habitats around the championship courses.
The project was taken a step further last year with primary school outreach events, allowing children to become involved in the project and raise their awareness of threats that face native habitats in the area.
Graeme Duncan, General Manager of the Carnoustie Links Management Committee, is proud of the work undertaken at the world class golfing venue:
“We are delighted to receive this award and see it as a fitting tribute for the efforts Craig and his team have made to nurture bees and other pollinators.
Here at Carnoustie, we take great care to protect and enhance our natural habitat. We were one of the first Open venues to obtain Golf Environment Organisation (GEO) certification, and this award is just another example of what can be achieved through hard-work, enthusiasm, and community involvement.”

NEWS RELEASE
North-east of Scotland businesses have the opportunity to swing into action in 2016 as entries are now open for the DF Communications Business Golf League.
Around 40 companies are expected to sign up for this year’s event which begins in April and will raise money for charity.
Businesses have until Friday, March 25 to book their place in the long-running competition which is played at courses across the north-east of Scotland, culminating in a final  in September.
DF Communications, an award-winning mobile phone and communications specialist to small, medium and large businesses, is sponsoring and organising the long-running league for a fifth consecutive year.
Last year’s tournament was won by Stuart Forsyth and Stuart Hill, of Glacier Energy Services, at the prestigious Castle Course at St Andrews. The event raised £800 for MND Scotland which supports those affected by motor neurone disease. The charity was chosen by 2014 winners Fugro.
Each year the winning team nominates a charity to benefit from funds raised during the subsequent year’s event.

Teams of between two and four named players can enter at a cost of £159 plus VAT. Any businesses interested in taking part should contact Craig Forsyth or Iain Powell at golf@dfcommunications.com or call 01224 588844.

Spanish pair making the running in
Four-ball Championship at Lumine

NEWS RELEASE
PGA professionals Gerard Piris Mateu and Ivo Giner continued their assault on the 2016 Golfbreaks.com Four-ball Championship in Round 2 after a nine-under par 62 gave them a two shot advantage heading into the final round.
The PGA of Spain pair got their day off to a fast start on Lumine Mediterránea Beach and Golf Club’s Lakes Course, leading the 40 PGA professional pairs that made it through the -8 cut mark to progress to the final round.

“We started off like a Ferrari with six birdies in a row,” said Piris Mateu.  “In the middle of the round we stopped a little bit but we made some birdies to finish so we’re very happy.”
“We kept our momentum up and started really well,” added Giner.  “In the end we had a point where there was a lot of heavy rain, but after when the sun came out again we made a couple of birdies.”
Two shots behind at -18 are Xavier Guzman and Juan Sarasti along with Xavier Puig and Pep Angles, each very much in with a chance of pushing for the lead in the final round.
Guzman and Sarasti managed to tame the Hills Course that played one shot more difficult on average than in Round 01.  A quiet front nine with two birdies and seven pars was followed up by six birdies and a bogey on the back nine for a 65 and a 125 total.
Puig and Angles meanwhile made good ground with nine birdies and nine pars for their excellent and hard-fought 62 on the Lakes Course:
“It was a great day because the conditions were a little bit tough with the rain and wind,” said Puig.  “We started well with three birdies and made some more on the back nine as well.”
The pair are definitely in a positive frame of mind when it comes to competing on the final day:
“I think we’re in a good position for tomorrow – we definitely wanted to be either leading or two or three strokes back to have a chance.
A further two PGA of Spain pairs are in fourth and fifth place, showing the dominance of the locals throughout.  Javier and Manuel Ballesteros made 66 on the Hills for fourth at -16 (127), whilst Borja Etchart and Eduardo Larrañaga made a second consecutive 64 to finish at -15 (128).
