E and E Alliance new boy Kieran Cantley

wins at Eyemouth with a 69

REPORT FROM ALAN GREENSHIELDS
Edinburgh and East of Scotland Alliance secretary
A break in the weather allowed 72 members to visit Eyemouth for the re-scheduled event at the testing par 72 (35-37) Berwickshire venue with silverware up for grabs, aptly named The Berwickshire Trophy.
A fine one-over-par round by Paul Porteous of Uphall early in the day set a target which stood for a large part of the day in terms of both best scratch and net scores.
Indeed, Paul's net 69 (73 less 4) resulted in him gaining the top handicap prize. George Wither,  just after the halfway point, carded an excellent par 72 which looked like it might challenge for top scratch score but this was later beaten, leaving George with 2nd handicap prize.
Third handicap prize went four ways on net 73 via Robin Cockburn (Harburn) (78 less 5), Colin Fraser (Peebles) (74 less 1), Donny Munro (Kingsknowe) (76 less 3) and Mark Sokolowski (Archerfield Links) (79 less 6).
Top scratch prize, later in the day, looked likely to be secured by Duncan Stewart of Turnhouse with a two-under-par 70 (34-36) but near the end of the field 19-year-old new member Kieran Cantley of Liberton posted the winning score - a superb 69 (34-35).
There was a triple tie for third scratch on 73 between Craig Gordon (Edinburgh Golf Centre), Craig Imlah (Craigielaw) and Ross Munro (Duddingston).
Top Trainee on 77 was Marc Owenson of Gullane.
Top Senior on net 74 was Ian Fyfe (Musselburgh) (80 less 6 )
In the Orders of Merit tables, first place remains the same in each but there are some changes further down
Scratch Order of Merit
1. Craig Gordon (Edinburgh Golf Centre) - 357.00
2. Duncan J Stewart (Turnhouse) - 344.0

Standing room only  for caddie Dave

Renwick's funeral service at East Calder

FROM BERNIE MAGUIRE
Secretary of the Association of Golf Writers
Given the strong interest at the passing of caddie Dave Renwick I wanted to write a few paragraphs about his funeral  service today.
It was very clear and crisp morning but with standing room only in the church at East Calder, just to the west of Edinburgh, for the funeral service to commemorate Dave's life.
In fact, those attending spilled over into the vestibule area and onto the steps leading into the church.
Representing the AGW was former Chairman Lewine Mair along with AGW Committee member Martin Dempster, who had visited Dave at his nearby home late last year, and myself.
Golfers present included Stephen Gallacher, Ritchie Ramsay, Chris Doak and Alastair Forsyth.
If my facts are correct, Dave's last victory was with Alastair at the 2008 Madeira Islands Open.
Of course, many of Dave's caddieing colleagues and friends were present, including Billy Foster, 'Wobbly', Damien Moore, former Caddy Association President Gerry Byrne and Ryan McGuigan, to name a few.
Once again, the Association of Golf Writers extends its condolences to Dave's family, including his six children.
Attached is a picture of the booklet presented to those attending.

Spaniards lead the way in PGA Four-ball

The PGA of Spain were the dominant force in Round 1 of the 2016 Golfbreaks.com Four-ball Championship with the top three places occupied by local PGA Professional pairs.
The pairs of Xavier Guzman and Juan Sarasti,  Gerard Piris Mateu and  Ivo Giner led the way at 11-under par following outstanding rounds of 60 at the Lumine Mediterránea Beach and Golf Club’s Lakes Course and 61 at the Hills course respectively in Spain.
Spaniards Lead the Charge at Golfbreaks.com Fourball Championship - https://youtu.be/Y02jG9lkUso
After the predicted strong winds across the Costa Daurada coastline never emerged, scoring well was back on the cards for the 116 PGA professional pairs battling it out.
A string of birdies for the Guzman/Sarasti partnership spanning both the front and back nines of the Lakes were bolstered by an eagle two from Sarasti on the par-four 13th hole for their -11 total.
Meanwhile on the Hills Course, the Piris/Giner pair also went on a birdie-spree with no less than six consecutive birdies on the back nine, returning home in just 29 shots.
One shot behind is the pair representing a legendary golfing dynasty in the form of Javier and Manuel Ballesteros, the son and nephew of European golfing icon, Seve Ballesteros.

Javier and Manuel also made light work of the Lakes Course again carding 11 birdies, but allowed a single bogey at the 14th hole to reduce their total down to -10 (61).
Two pairs of PGA professionals sit at nine-under - Molteni/Tadini (PGA of Italy) and Puig/Angles (PGA of Spain) – whilst no fewer than eight pairs are tied for sixth position at seven-under par, including defending champions Matthew Cort and Craig Shave (PGA of Great Britain and Ireland).
Competitors will switch courses for Round 2 before a cut comes in to play at the end of the round that sees the top-40 pairs and ties continue into the final round over the Lakes Course.

Craig Ross clickety-clicks in African stroke-play:

66 puts him in joint second place after first round

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Craig Ross spearheaded the nine-strong Scottish challenge in the African men's amateur stroke-play championship with a six-under-par 66 at Leopard Creek Golf Club.

That put the Kirkhill man, pictured, in joint second place, alongside England's Jamie Bower, a shot behind the South African leader Albert Venter who had a seven-birdie inward half of 30 for a 65.
Ross had and eagle 2 at the 292yd sixth and birdies at the long second, short fifth, long 13th, 14th and long 18th in halves of 32 (three under) and 34 (three under).
Jamie Savage was another Scot in the top 10 at the end of the first day. He shot a 71 (34-37) for joint 10th place.
Jack McDonald and Connor Syme are sharing 24th place on 73.
Calum Fyfe had a 75 for joint 42nd place and Sandy Scott a 76 for tied 47th place.
Big names Bob MacIntyre, the left-handed Scottish champion from Oban, and former Scottish title-holder Grant Forrest (Craigielaw) surprisingly struggled to return five-over-par 77s.
In fact MacIntyre got an eagle 3 at the 18th for 40 home and Forrest had an eagle 2 at the first hole before requiring 42 blows for the second nine.
Scott Gibson did even worse. He had a quadruple bogey 8 at the 10th and a triple bogey 8 at the 15 in taking 48 shots to cover the inwared nine. He finished with an 86 to be tied 83rd in a field of 88 players.
