Kintore, Sanquhar and Aegon (Edinburgh)

joint first-round leaders in Turkey with 74s

Three clubs lead the way after day one of Scottish Golf’s first-ever overseas event, the grand final of the Belhaven Best Scottish Club Handicap Championship in Turkey.
Being staged for the first time at the superb Regnum Carya Golf
and Spa Resort in Belek, 20 club pairings from across Scotland are chasing the sought-after title, having battled through regional finals in Scotland last year.
Their quest for glory on foreign fields began today over the National National Golf Course, a recent former venue for the Turkish Airlines Open on the Ladies European Tour. The 36-hole championship  concludes on Sunday over the Carya lay-out, a venue that will host the European Tour’s biggest names in November.
On a breezy day that made scoring tricky on a course design finalised by ex-European Ryder Cup player David Feherty, a trio of clubs battled to three-over-par 74s.

HERE'S THE HALFWAY SCOREBOARD
par 71

The early starters from the North-east, Kintore, share top spot with Border side Sanquhar and Edinburgh club Aegon.
On a bunched leaderboard, the teams from Hayston, Cruden Bay, Dalbeattie, Strathpeffer Spa and Torrance Park lead the chasing pack after 76s in search of the national crown.
Kintore’s Brian Gilbert, a two handicapper who fired a glorious shot close at the par-3 11th to aid the team score, said: “It was difficult to score out there, but it was a great challenge. My partner Robbie Lawrence and I look forward to tomorrow.”
The Sanquhar duo of Ian MacFarlane and Stuart Biggar will look to maintain their challenge at the top on Sunday, along with Aegon’s Steven Ede and Steven Hislop.
“It was quite hard in the wind today, that was a major factor,” said Pitlochry’s Ewan Dunbar, who was in the first match out with playing partner Grant Stewart. “It’s a lovely course, especially the second nine holes we played.”
Caldwell’s William McGuire put the challenge on a par with the Open Championship lay-out at Carnoustie and added: “It was a tough as anything I’ve played, but this is a brilliant event and we all loved it. The greens were excellent.”
The move to hosting an event abroad is part of Scottish Golf’s ongoing campaign to provide exclusive benefits and unique golfing experiences to its 222,000 member golfers
This is being achieved, thanks to a ground-breaking new sponsorship deal, involving Turkish Airlines, the Regnum Carya resort, Belhaven Best and GolfKings, Scottish Golf’s official travel partner.
The Belhaven Best Scottish Club Handicap Championship has been the country’s biggest participation event since it launch in 1999, with around 20,000 club members taking part in local qualifying each year.
Belhaven Best has been Scottish Golf’s official partner since the inception of the event, making it one of the longest standing sponsorships in the domestic game.

North Inch, Perth - 'World’s oldest golf course’ - could be axed amid council cuts

North Inch Golf Course in Perth is believed the be the oldest in the world. Picture: North Inch

North Inch Golf Course in Perth is believed the be the oldest in the world. Picture: North Inch

FROM THE SCOTSMAN WEBSITE
A Scottish golf course said to be the oldest in the world could be axed as part of council cuts.
King James VI played on Perth’s North Inch Golf Course in the 1500s, and Beasley’s World Atlas of Golf names it “the first recognisable golf course in the world”.

Golf has reportedly been played at North Inch for the best part of 500 years. Picture: North Inch

St Andrews is known as the “home of golf” throughout the world, and is famed for the Old Course, with the first recording of golf being played on it as far back as 1574.
However, the Perth Merchants Golf Club says James IV played golf on the North Inch more than 70 years earlier.
The proposal - which would save cash-strapped Perth and Kinross Council some £100,000 a year and was condemned today as “sacrilege” - will be discussed on Thursday when councillors decide which services will survive a need to make cuts.
The SNP-led authority is looking to slash £5 million from its spending next year.
Alternatives to closing the 18-hole municiple parkland course include a reduction in street sweeping, which would save more than twice as much, or greater efficiencies in the provision of community care packages for adults, a service which is said to be “ripe for review” where £1.37 million could be saved.
Axing a so-called “safer communities team” would save £300,000 - more than three times the cost of maintaining the historic golf course.
The current arrangement of holes at the North Inch was laid out by Old Tom Morris, who also designed Carnoustie, Muirfield and St Andrews New.
King James IV, who was crowned at Scone Palace in 1488, decided in 1502 that the threat of war with England had receded and lifted the longstanding ban on golf.
This had been imposed to encourage archery, and he then personally took up golf.
In the first recorded purchase of golf equipment, he then went and ordered his first set of golf clubs from a local bowmaker in Perth, costing him the princely sum of 13 shillings (65p).
The course is open to all, and is home to two ancient golf clubs, the Perth Merchants and the Perth Artisans, both of which have used it for over a century.
Robin Valentine, 83, of the Perth Merchants Golf Club said: “This is a golf course that belongs to the people of Perth. I would be sadly disappointed if it was closed.
“This is our home course and there are connections going back more than 100 years, in the same way as Perth Artisans who have used it for over 120 years.”
Only two years ago, the council spent £50,000 on measures to protect the course from flooding by the adjacent River Tay.
Lee Bushby, club captain of the Royal Perth Golfing Society (RPGS) said it would be “devastating” if the course was to close.
Charlie Gallagher, president of the Perth and Kinross County Golf Union, has written to the council’s chief executive, local councillors, and the Provost of Perth calling for the course to be saved.
He said: “We appreciate the council are facing massive cuts over the next few years, but it would be a tragedy if the North Inch golf course was to be lost to the community at a time when the tide is turning.”
Mr Gallagher said the North Inch was the area’s only municipal course.
He added: “We see it as part of the legacy the area was promised in the wake of the Ryder Cup.”

Late bogeys cost Greig Hutcheon victory on

Algarve, tied 2nd behind winner Tiago Cruz

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Bogeys at the 16th and 17th in a closing round of four-under 68 cost Tartan Tour No 1 Greig Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) victory in the Algarve Pro Tour 36-hole tournament at Palmares today.
The Aberdeen man had six birdies to lead the field into the closing holes  and looked set to win the 2,000 euros first prize until he had these late back-to-back bogeys.
Hutch did birdie the 18th but Portugal's Tiago Cruz had posted rounds of 66 and 67 for an 11-under par final total of 133.
Greig, who had shared the first-round lead with a 66, finished joint second, one shot behind Cruz, with England's Gary Hurley (68-66).
Hutcheon and Hurley earned 1,1500 euros each.
Jordon McColl (Kingsbarns Pro Academy) tied for 13th place on three-under par 141 and earned 325 euros for rounds of 75 and 66.
McColl had seven birdies in his second round. He covered his last 12 holes in six under par.
Scott Henderson (Kings Links Golf Centre) tied with James Steven on 145 for 25th place. Henderson, who was two over par for his last 10 holes, scored 73-72, Steven 72-73. Both men outside the prize list which paid out to the leading 15 finishers.

Greig Hutcheon told Scottishgolfview.com by Email:

"Found a fairway bunker at 16 and my putt to save par hung on the lip but stayed above ground. At the 17th, I had a poorish tee shot and three putts from 30ft.
"Birdie at last but not enough. Needed an eagle to win. But if you had told me I would shoot 10 under par for 36 holes after a long cold winter, I would have been delighted!
"Great course Palmares. No pushover, so very pleased with first performance."

S African goes seven shots clear after 11-under

61 in Myanmar Open

ASIAN TOUR NEWS RELEASE
Yangon: South Africa’s Shaun Norris left the chasing pack in his wake by storming up the leaderboard with a sensational 11-under-par 61 in the third round of the Leopalace21 Myanmar Open today.
Norris, a one-time Asian Tour winner, opened up a commanding seven-shot lead with a three-day total of 23-under-par 193 at the Royal Mingalardon Golf and Country Club.
Japan’s Azuma Yano provided the day’s other highlight when he holed out with his second shot at the par-5 14th
Norris was a man on fire starting from the par-four first. He set the blistering pace with six birdies and an eagle through eight holes before a lone bogey on nine momentarily put the brakes on his charge.
“I was not very sure about the yardage there and the last place you want to be on the greens is far away from the pin. I basically bailed out on that shot, left it to the right of the green and did not get a good up and down,” said Norris.
After turning in 29, the South African enjoyed another sparkling homeward-nine with another four birdies on holes 11, 13, 15 and 17.
“It was definitely a very exciting day. Right from the start, everything went well. I could read the line and was striking it well, hitting the ball into places which I wanted it to be.
“I was always thinking of that magical 59. I hit a good putt on 16 but only managed a par. Unfortunately the wind turned on us on 18 so I couldn’t really go for it as it was out of reach,” said Norris.
Yano enjoyed a defining moment in his career with his first albatross.
The Japanese used his seven-iron second shot to perfection on the par-five 14 after a long drive put him within reach of the green in two.

Danny Willett takes Dubai lead with 65 for

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Danny Willett took control of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic with a brilliant seven under par 65 in the third round at Emirates Golf Club today.
The Englishman, who finished second behind Rory McIlroy in the 2015 Race to Dubai, reached 16 under par with an eagle, six birdies and a bogey, and will take a one-shot lead into the final day, when he will aim to capture his fourth European Tour title.
Behind him is Spaniard Rafa Cabrera-Bello, the winner here in 2012 who signed for a 67, while England’s Andy Sullivan, who continues his affinity with Dubai after finishing runner-up in the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in November, is another stroke back at 14 under following a 66.
South African Ernie Els, who has won the tournament three times – more than any other player – was one shot off the lead at the halfway stage but slipped down to tied 28th after a 74  Victory may also now be beyond world number two and defending champion Rory McIlroy after a 68 left him tied 21st, eight shots back.

Quotes

Danny Willett

“I played great golf today and kept the foot down. It could have been a couple better today, but I’m delighted. I’ve been working hard, doing the hard work in the gym and changing the swing a little bit to counter it, so it’s all coming together nicely and it’s nice to get results from it.

" It’s not too often you shoot back-to-back 65s.  I kept the ball under fantastic control with some crosswinds and hit it in there close. I was very in control of myself mentally, as well. I’m trying to keep it as simple as possible and let the mind be a little bit calmer.
“If anyone tells you they won’t be thinking about what they have to do tomorrow they’d be lieing. It gets into your head and you go through scenarios, bad and good. You try to even them out so that when you come out tomorrow, regardless of what happens early or late on, you’re ready for it.”

Rafa Cabrera-Bello
“I'm very pleased with the score, five under again, and I’m really happy to be just one behind the leader. The conditions were a little easier than yesterday, with a little less wind, but the fairways are getting firmer, the rough is growing a bit and the greens are a bit harder and faster every day.

"Tomorrow I need to play aggressively, keep playing as well as I am to give myself a chance. Lots of players are not far off the lead and all of them are going to have a chance tomorrow and they are definitely all as hungry as I am. The win was a long time ago, but I know what to do around here to win.”

Andy Sullivan
“I just found something with my driving. I was struggling with it in Abu Dhabi and struggled with it on Thursday, but found a bit more rhythm and managed to keep it on the fairways. My iron play is really good this week, so if I keep on doing that, I know I'm going to give myself chances. It’s very satisfying to be where I am on the leaderboard and I can’t wait until tomorrow.”

Rory McIlroy

“It is going to be a long shot, but I came back from seven shots behind at Wentworth a couple of years ago, so it’s not out of the realms of possibility. There’s a lot of good stuff in there obviously but there’s not much consistency. There’s a lot of good and there's a lot of not so good.

"If there was at least something that was sort of going wrong all the time, at least you can put your finger on it and have a plan to try to rectify it. But there’s one more day to try to play a good round of golf, and I've got next week off to work on a few things and finally get home.”
