Ferguson fades and Ireland's Hume wins

South African stroke play championship

FROM THE SGU WEBSITE
Jack Hume put on one of the classiest performances of the week with a flawless final round of eight -under 64 to close out a thrilling one-stroke victory in the South African stroke-play championship at Blue Valley Golf and Country Club.
The Irishman from Naas Golf Club produced a hat-trick of birdies over the closing holes in the final round to deny 2014 champion Jason Smith a repeat victory and edge out another Irishman, Stuart Grehan from Tullamore, and finish the week with a winning aggregate of 19-under-par 269.
Smith and Grehan shared second on 18 under with respective rounds of 71 and 70. Hume became the second Irish champion to have his named etchedto on the prestigious trophy since Ciaran McMonagle triumphed at East London Golf Club in 2000.
He was also the first player to break the 270 mark since Richard Sterne won with a 22- under 266 total at Oppenheimer Park in 2001.
Hume started the last day six shots behind Smith and joint leader Ewen Ferguson and was absolutely thrilled with the day’s outcome after a shaky start.
Bearsden’s Ferguson faded with a 75 - easily his worst score of the week - and had to settle for a tie for fifth spot on 14 under 274, with the Scots trio of Robert MacIntyre, Connor Syme and Scott Gibson a stroke further back in a share of 10th.
“I knew I would have to shoot a low one to have any chance, but I struggled off the tee and battled to save par at the first few holes,” said Hume. “I knew I had a chance, but it was very tight.”
Ferguson bowed out of the tussle when he dropped five shots around the turn. He had birdies at the long third, seventh and 11th in halves of 36-39.
But the former British boys' champion bogeyed the short second, the ninth, had a double bogey 6 at the 10th and then bogeyed the short 12th and 13th.
but Smith and Grehan were fighting for pole position in the final group. Smith led on 18 under and Grehan lurked a further shot back after both birdied 13, but Hume came through to triumph.
“I had no idea that this was such a prestigious achievement until I saw some of the names on the trophy,” the world number 39-ranked amateur said.
“It’s an amazing feeling to hold this trophy and realise that my name will be there next to guys like Branden Grace, Richard Sterne and Trevor Immelman. This is an incredible victory for me and for Ireland.”
Connor Syme (67), Bob MacIntyre (68) and Scott Gibson (68) tied for 10th place on 13-under 275.
Grant Forrest made the top 20 in joint 17th place with a 69 for 277.
Jamie Savage had a 68 for 278 and Craig Ross a 72 for 282.
Nairn youngster Sandy Scott had a 76 - like Ferguson, easily his worst round of the four - for a final total of three-under 285 and a final placing of joint 49th. Four shots shed to par over the four-hole span from the seventh to the 10th were Sandy's undoing.
Scott had a double 6 at the seventh and dropped other shots at the first, short eighth and 10th in halves of 39 and 36. His only birdie came at the fourth.

Three Scots (Jamieson, Drysdale, Lee) make

cut but five fail in Dubai Desert Classic

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Former winner of this tournament, Rafa Cabrera-Bello called it one of the best putting rounds of his life after storming to the top of the leaderboard at the halfway stage of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic with a second consecutive five under par 67.
The Spaniard, who won here at Emirates Golf Club in 2012, rolled in his 26th and final putt of the day  to birdie the 18th hole and establish a one-shot lead over three-time winner Ernie Els, South African Trevor Fisher Jnr and Englishman Danny Willett.
Els is the only player to win three Desert Classic titles (in 1994, 2002 and 2005), and he did his chances of adding a fourth no harm with a 67 to reach nine under, continuing his resurgence following his recent, well-documented putting woes. The highlight was a superb eagle at the par five 18th.
Denmark’s Thorbjørn Olesen, who was tied second alongside Cabrera-Bello in Qatar last week, shot the round of the week so far, a brilliant 64 in the day’s toughest conditions, to jump up the leaderboard to tied fifth on eight under, alongside Englishmen Andy Sullivan and Chris Wood and Dutchman Joost Luiten.
Another former winner, Henrik Stenson, signed for a 68 to move to seven under, but it was a more frustrating day for world number two Rory McIlroy, who was in danger of missing the cut until four birdies in the last six holes gave him a 72 and lifted him into a share of 23rd place.

Quotes

Rafa Cabrera-Bello
“Yesterday, I really felt I played great from tee to green. I gave myself lots of chances. I know it’s weird to say they didn’t go in when I shot five under. Today was the exact opposite. I didn’t play as well, as sharp. It was windy. I didn’t quite find my tempo, but the putting was extremely hot today.

"I rolled one of the best putting rounds of my life today, so that made up for everything else. My game really is very good at the moment. I’m confident I’m doing all parts of the game well. I worked hard over the break and I’m happy to be here competing again and ready.”

Ernie Els
“I love this golf course. I’ve played it since '93 so I know it well. I've been feeling better and better since the first week of the season, when it was pretty bad. Things have been coming along a little bit, slowly. But mainly the putter – I’m falling in love on the greens again.

"It’s a complete turnaround from a couple weeks ago when I was dreading to get on the greens. I’m actually enjoying it on the greens - the surfaces are just unbelievable and I’ve got a lot more confidence in the stroke and the set-up.”

Danny Willett
“I played some really good golf, hit a lot of good solid shots in the fairway and gave myself a lot of good numbers and didn’t really give myself too much stress, which is key.  It’s nice to follow up a good finish last year by starting the season well at Sun City.

" This is only my third event, so I’m trying to get on a bit of a run now and then take a bit of time off when the baby comes. A big part of my year is my weeks off and trying to get the back and the fitness levels good. It’s important to spend time at home, making sure I get a lot of quality work done on my golf.”

Rory McIlroy
“I struggled in the wind a little bit and didn’t get off to the best of starts again. I bounced back well and persevered and got something out of the round in the end. It never looked like I was going to shoot better than over par, but to shoot par is not bad, and I just need to make sure I get off to a fast start tomorrow. But I’ve come back from bigger deficits than this, and this is one of my favourite places.

"If I can get off to a faster start tomorrow, you never know. I’ll get better conditions, as well, being out a little earlier. The greens and the course in general got very firm and very fast out there, so hopefully I can get out in the morning and post a good score.”
SCOTSWATCH (by Colin Farquharson)

Three Scots -- Scott Jamieson (140), David Drysdale (142) and Craig Lee (143) - made the cut at one-under 143 but the five other Scots in the field are packing their backs.
Those who missed the cut were Stephen Gallacher (70-75) and Paul Lawrie (73-72) on 145; Marc Warren (73-74) on 147; Paul Doherty (75-73) on 148 and Richie Ramsay (74-77) on 151
Jamieson shot rounds of 69 and 71, Drysdale 72 and 70, Lee 72 and 71.

From the Washington Times

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (AP) - The Waste Management Phoenix Open is a bit out there by US PGA Tour standards. So is Rickie Fowler.
As comfortable in a motocross race as a golf tournament as a kid in California, Fowler was as fashion-forward as ever in high tops and jogger pants Thursday in front of more than 100,000 fans at TPC Scottsdale.
“I grew up around action sports and this kind of reminds me more of being at action sports events,” Fowler said. “The fans being loud and having fun.”
He brought as much substance as style, shooting a 6-under 65 to tie Irishman Shane Lowry and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama for the lead in the suspended first round.
After an hour frost delay at the chilly Stadium Course, Fowler played the first six holes in 5 under.
“I made some good putts to start the round,” Fowler said. “Just kind of got everything going. Made a couple of bad swings. Cost me a little bit, but other than that, nice way to get off to a good start.”
Fowler missed the cut last week at Torrey Pines after winning the European Tour event in Abu Dhabi the previous week. He has four worldwide victories in the last nine months.
“I know I have been swinging well and playing well,” Fowler said. “I just didn’t make anything last week.”
Fowler opened with a birdie on the par-4 10th as the temperature crawled into the 40s, holing a 16-foot putt. He made a 35-footer on the 12th, two-putted for birdie on the 13th and made a 28-foot eagle putt on the par-5 15th after hitting a 258-yard shot over the water.
“I had a good number in there,” Fowler said. “Actually, put a 5-wood in play last week, a new one.”
The top-ranked player in the field at No. 4, Fowler bogeyed the par-3 16th after drawing an awkward lie in the right bunker. He birdied the short par-4 17th, and bogeyed the par-4 18th after driving left into the water. On his back nine, he got up-and-down for birdie from a greenside bunker on the par-5 third and closed with a 12-foot birdie putt on the par-4 ninth.
While Fowler overcame some bad shots, Phil Mickelson compounded his mistakes to fall back. After playing his first eight holes in 5 under to take the lead, Lefty dropped four strokes in a two-hole stretch and finished with a 69.
On his back nine, Mickelson bogeyed the par-3 fourth after hitting short and right and failing to reach the green with his second, and unraveled with a triple bogey on the par-4 fifth. He drove out of bounds to the right, hit his second tee shot into the right bunker and three-putted from 50 feet.
“I hit a bad shot at the wrong time,” Mickelson said. “It’s the tightest hole out there. You miss the fairway 5 yards left, you’re in the wash, in the hazard. You miss it right of the bunker, you’re out of bounds. … I’m not going to dwell on the one bad one because there were really a lot of good ones.”
The best one was on the par-5 13th - his fourth hole of the day - when he hit a 252-yard hybrid approach to 2 1/2 feet to set up an eagle.

Norris, Chawrasia share lead in Myanmar

Open at 12-under-par 132

Yangon: India’s S S P Chawrasia continued to show his consistency around the greens as he returned a second round six-under-par 66 to grab a share of the second-round lead with South Africa’s Shaun Norris at the US $750,000 Leopalace21 Myanmar Open on Friday.
Chawrasia, who also opened with a 66, kept the bogeys off his card again by signing for a two-day total of 12-under-par 132 at the Royal Mingalardon Golf and Country Club.
Norris matched Chawrasia’s efforts by carding a similar 66 at Myanmar’s richest sporting event, which is sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO).
Australia’s Sam Brazel meanwhile posted a 67 to trail the leading duo together with India’s Rashid Khan by one shot in equal third place.
The weekend cut was set at four-under 140 with 66 players progressing to the final two rounds.
