Steven Gerrard: Football stardom with Liverpool cuts no ice with Hillside GC
Steven Gerrard has had a membership application
rejected by a golf club in Southport for fear he would bring ‘shame' to
their prestigious name, according to The Sun newspaper. The former England captain had been recommended by Liverpool legends
Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen, who are both members, but the Hillside
Golf Club, Lancashire rejected his application due to his off the pitch behaviour. Gerrard contacted the £150-per-game visitors' green fee golf club back in 2013 but was caught up in a street scuffle two months afterwards.
A source of The Sun said: “They’re worried he’ll damage the club’s
reputation. Apparently they viewed the footage and decided he couldn’t become a Hillside member.” It is reported that this is the first time Dalglish has recommended
someone to be a member and the source said that the Scot is furious with
the club’s decision. “Kenny was fuming after Steve was blackballed. Nobody expected he’d be rejected,” the source added. Despite being cleared of any charges against him, it appears the
Hillside Golf Club powers-that-be haven’t forgotten the bust-up as their membership
committee made the decision last week to turn down the 35-year-old Gerrard's
application.

off at 6pm with round four scheduled to resume at 7.30am on Monday

Spieth
is hopeful of draining his testing birdie putt from five feet and apply
the pressure on Song, who at 12-under, would then have to save par on
16 and
hold on to his slender one-shot advantage for his remaining two holes.
“My
game really started to come together on the back nine. I was putting
some pressure on the leader. Assuming I make that putt on 18 that is
going to put
some pressure on him.
“It (Monday finish) is what it is. I will be back early tomorrow to try and finish this off,” said Spieth.
Song
is also bracing for a titanic finish and hopes the course conditions
will play to his advantage as he seeks his maiden breakthrough.
“I
am really tired, it has been a long wait. Coming back tomorrow is okay
for me as the course should be in a better condition (less wet).
“Tomorrow
I will just play shot by shot and hope I can get the win. I have had a
lot of second place finishes and it is time for a victory,” said Song.
China’s Liang Wen-chong meanwhile carded a two-under-par 68 to complete his round just before the sirens went off again.
Liang,
2007 Asian Tour Order of Merit champion, would be following Monday’s
developments closely as his four-day total of 10-under-par 274 could
still give
him an outside chance of a play-off at the US$1 million event which is
sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO).
“I
three-putted on 12 and that was a very costly bogey. But I also missed
several makeable birdie opportunities and I’m regretting it now.
“But overall, a 10-under score is still very respectable especially on this golf course,” said the Chinese.
