Welshman Boote finishes fourth in South

American men's amateur championship

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Both the men's and women's titles were won by South Americans in the South American championships, supported by the R and A, at Lima Golf Club, Peru today.
Sofia Garcia (Paraguay) retained the women's title - see report on www.kirkwoodgolf.co.uk - and Juan Alvarez (Uruguay) won the men's championship by a shot from American Scott Harvey and Argentina's Matias Simaski.
Welshman David Boote, a student at Stanford University, California, led the field at one time in the 72-hole event but he eventually finished a creditable fourth on 282, four shots behind the winner.
England's young Marco Penge, holder of the Scottish men's open stroke-play title, recovered from an opening round of 77 to finish sixth on 285.
Ireland's Colin Fairweather tied for ninth place on 288.
Scots Barry Hume and Ryan Campbell finished T17 and T24 respectively.
Hume's third-round 78 was the "killer" for the Haggs Castle man who closed with a 71 for four-over 292.
Campbell finished with a 74 for 295.

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS

Scottish Open champion Rickie Fowler produced a mesmerising display to clinch the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship title, holding off the challenges of Thomas Pieters, Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson to set up a mouth-watering 2016 season.

Three of the top six players in the world all played their part in a titanic battle at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, with McIlroy sinking a monster eagle putt at the last to join Stenson in posting a clubhouse target of 14 under.

Fowler, who had earlier bounced straight back from a double-bogey at the seventh hole by holing out from a greenside bunker for birdie at the eighth, chipped in at the 17th just minutes after McIlroy's grandstand finish. He then watched as Pieters' eagle putt at the 18th shaved the hole before the Belgian tapped in for birdie, leaving Fowler needing a par for victory.
Fowler duly took the required two putts and closed out a three under final round  of 69, for a 16 under par total and a one-shot victory, as he sealed a second European Tour title in as many years.
Rickie Fowler
“This was a big one. Last year, obviously having a multiple-win season, I wanted to come back and work on getting back in the winner's circle after a successful season and keep moving forward - this is a great start.
“When something happens like that (shot at eight), it definitely gives you a little boost of confidence knowing that you've got a good break with that after having a bad break, and sometimes you need a little luck on your side to get some wins.
“It’s the first time I've been inside the top five (on World Rankings). So this is the highest, or lowest, however you want to say it, I've been ranked. So it's definitely nice to be up there. The ultimate goal this year is to go win a major and this is a step in the right direction for sure.
“I've got my eye sight on one (in the world), that would be the ultimate goal, but I'm up against some pretty tough competition.
“I'm excited. There's definitely some fine-tuning that we can do and we can always get better. I know all the players out here are always trying to get better, and that's the goal moving forward, to be ready for Augusta.”
Thomas Pieters
“I’m a little bit disappointed, I played pretty good today. It doesn't get much better - perfect weather, good company. I’ll just looking forward to next week now.
“I hit it really well. I drove it a little bit better this weekend, so I was going to give myself plenty of chances and could have dropped a couple more putts, but that's how it goes.”
Rory McIlroy
“I guess it’s a case of what might have been, in a  way. I played a very, very average 18 holes. I guess on the back nine of the second round and the front nine of the third round -- or the back nine of the second -- there was an 18-hole stretch where I played maybe one-over par. In a tournament like this, you just can't do that.
“I gave myself a lot of work to do going into the last 18 holes, and I just didn't quite have it today. I think 68 is the best I could have done out there with the places I hit it.
“Thankfully, I gave myself a few more opportunities on the back nine and was able to convert some and finish with a nice eagle.”

Henrik Stenson
“I haven't really been playing that well in the first outing generally - the last couple years I missed the cut in Abu Dhabi, which never feels good.
“In that sense I was really happy with the first day and I putted well and hit some really good iron shots. All in all, it's been a very good week in that sense, and the knee - it's not given me too much pain. It just needs a bit more time to be 100 per cent.”

Jordan Spieth
“I was talking with Michael up the 18th fairway saying, wow, a birdie here and we're definitely Top-10, and I felt like we were off this week. I didn't make anything. I didn't quite give a few myself a lot of chances the first couple rounds.
“I didn't get in a rhythm, and when I did have chances, they just wouldn't go in. I was just a little off on the read or the speed, one of the two. Sometimes that happens during a week, and we kind of grinded out eight-under on the weekend in what really could have been something special, but it also could have been worse.”

SCOTSWATCH (by Colin Farquharson). Richie Ramsay made the top 20 with a final round of 69 for eight-under-280. He earned 31,341 euros for T16. David Drysdale finished T22 on 281, also with a final round of 69. His cash reward was 26,671 euros.

Florida-based Russell Knox had a disappointing tournament by his standards. He broke 70 only with a final round of 69 for 283 and a T35 finish for a 15,978 euros payslip.
Scott Jamieson finished on a low note with a 75 for T46 on 284, after shooting a 66 in the third round. He earned 11,799 euros

Jason Dufner leads by two in California

LA QUINTA, California -- Jason Dufner had a good feeling when he made the turn Saturday at La Quinta Country Club in the third round of the CareerBuilder Challenge.
''I told my caddie and my amateur partners, `I'm about to do something good,''' Dufner said. ''So, when you start thinking like that, good things happen.''
He did something a lot better than just good, birdieing seven of the final nine holes for an 8-under 64 and a two-stroke lead with one round left at PGA West's TPC Stadium Course.
Winless since the 2013 PGA Championship, Dufner was at 23-under 193. He opened with a 64 on Thursday on the Nicklaus Tournament Course for a share of the lead and had a 65 on Friday on the Stadium Course to take a one-shot advantage.
''This is the way you want to play,'' Dufner said. ''This is what we work to do. My mindset's at a point where, no matter what happens out there, good swings, bad swings, I know that I can shoot good scores.''
Jamie Lovemark was second after a 65 on the Stadium Course.
''Any time you go out there and shoot 7 under, it's a good day, no matter what,'' Lovemark said. ''I was pleased with the way I played the entire round. I'm in good position to compete for a win tomorrow.''
Adam Hadwin had a 64 on the Nicklaus Course to get to 20 under. The Canadian missed a chance to get closer, bogeying the par-5 15th after hitting into the water and closing with three pars.
''It's just going to be a question of handling the nerves and making sure those putts kind of keep hitting the lines,'' Hadwin said.
Phil Mickelson was tied for fifth at 17 under in his first start since the Presidents Cup in October and first since splitting with swing coach Butch Harmon to work with Andrew Getson. Lefty had a bogey-free 66 at the Stadium Course, holing a flop shot for birdie on the 10th hole.
''It's been a good three days,'' Mickelson said. ''It's been a good start.''
Dufner started the birdie spree on the first hole, hitting a lob wedge to 10 feet. He made a 20-footer on No. 3, hit a 9-iron out of a bunker to 3 feet on 4, two-putted the par-5 fifth and sixth, and made it five in a row with a 12-footer on 7. He rolled in another 12-footer on 9 for his 10th birdie of the day.
''I don't worry about zones and talking about stuff like that,'' Dufner said. ''I'm just trying to hit each shot as good as I can and not let results and outcome dictate how I feel or how I think out there. ... I'm just playing golf like I should.''
Dufner earned his PGA Tour card at PGA West in 2008 and is comfortable on the Stadium Course, the Pete Dye-designed layout being used in the event for the first time since 1987.
''Conditions are perfect for scoring,'' Dufner said. ''I'm not too worried about what other people are saying about golf courses. I feel like I can play pretty good. You got a lot of scoring clubs in your hand on that course.''
The Stadium Course had a three-day average of 70.908. The Nicklaus Course finished at 68.930, and La Quinta at 69.149. The cut was at 9 under, with 70 players returning to the Stadium Course on Sunday.
''I don't feel as though this is a similar final-round course like we've had in the past,'' Mickelson said. ''You could get away with some wayward shots and still shoot in the 60s. But if you come out here and play a little sloppy, you're going to shoot in the mid- to high-70s. It's a very penalizing course for anything less than perfectly struck shots.''
David Lingmerth was five strokes back at 18 under after a 62 on the Nicklaus Course. The Swede had six straight birdies from No. 14 to No. 1, eagled the par-5 fifth, birdied the seventh and closed with two pars.
''I was hoping to catch up and get a little bit closer than I am right now,'' Lingmerth said.
Kevin Na matched Lingmerth with a 62 on Nicklaus Course, playing his last seven holes in 8 under with an eagle and seven birdies to get to 17 under. ''Every shot was at the flag,'' Na said.
