Unfit Stenson pulls out of next week's Qatar

Masters with knee and foot pains

Henrik Stenson has pulled out of next week's Qatar Masters after complaining of pain in his knee and foot during the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.
Stenson underwent keyhole surgery on his right knee the week after finishing a distant runner-up to Marc Leishman at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa in early December.
The Swede salvaged a level-par 72 with three straight birdies from the 15th to reach the halfway stage just three off the lead in Abu Dhabi - his first event since his operation - but he admitted afterwards that he was far from fully fit.
Stenson will now have a week off before returning for the final tournament in the Desert Swing at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, which starts on February 4.

R&A will consider practice-round shorts for

future Open championships

ABU DHABI – The R&A has not ruled out allowing players to practice in shorts in future British Opens.
The governing body will come under pressure to get into line with the new European Tour policy of allowing members to wear shorts during practice rounds.
European Tour chairman Thomas Bjorn believes there will come a day when players will be allowed to play tournament rounds in shorts, too, but said it would probably never happen in majors.
“I can see it happening in tournament days one day,” Bjorn said. “I’m not sure it will happen in my time, and it probably will never happen in majors.”
The conditions of competition for this year’s Open at Royal Troon have already been set, so long trousers will be required this year. However, Bjorn could be wrong about future majors if a statement from the R&A is anything to go by.
A spokesman for the R&A said:
“We welcome initiatives that ensure golf remains modern and relevant to today’s generation of players but we do have to maintain a balance with the traditions of the game. While we already have our conditions of entry for the 145th Open at Royal Troon, this is something the Championship Committee will consider in the future. It would certainly be a pleasant dilemma to have if the weather here in mid-July is sufficiently warm for shorts to be desirable.”
There’s nothing to stop the R&A from adopting a shorts policy for next year’s championship at Royal Birkdale.

Jordan Spieth wins race against the clock to

complete third round in Abu Dhabi

Jordan Spieth's adventurous debut at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship continued as he was involved in bizarre scenes at the end of the third day.
Spieth faced a race against time to complete his third round before darkness halted play following another lengthy delay due to fog, but he managed to get his final drive away just seconds before the siren sounded.
Having beaten the buzzer, the world No 1 was then able complete the ninth - his final hole - along with five other players as Spieth and his playing-partners converged with the group in front, who had stood aside to allow the Texan to tee off.
Despite the fading light, Spieth closed with a solid par-four to cap a bogey-free 68 which lifted him to seven under, just three off the lead, as well as earning him a substantial lie-in on Sunday morning.
"I've never done that before," said Spieth, who putted out with playing-partners Soren Kjeldsen and Pablo Larrazabal along with English youngsters Tyrrell Hatton and Eddie Pepperell and Thai star Kiradech Aphibarnrat in a rare "six-ball".
Spieth had arrived on the tee to find Hatton, Pepperell and Aphibarnrat still waiting to hit their drives as they were held up by leader Andy Sullivan, who endured an unsuccessful five minutes searching for his ball after an errant drive.
Sullivan was forced to head back to the tee to put a second ball in play, and the Englishman, Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau still have half of their third rounds to complete when play resumes on Sunday morning.
Spieth added: "We got up there and didn't really know if there were any rules around us, who tees off first. We let them tee off first and as I struck my shot, the horn blew.
"We were all very, very relieved to have that happen. It saved us about five-plus hours in arriving to the course tomorrow.
"It just takes away from sitting around the clubhouse for hours. I can maybe go to the gym in the morning now. I can do a little more than I would have been able to do if we were up before five. But as far as my play, I don't think it's going to affect much.
"I have not played a six-ball before. That was a first. We were asking the guys in front of us, if you guys want to, just go finish and we'll play behind you, that's the way it's supposed to be. They didn't really mind us joining them.
"Pablo just decided to go ahead and hit so we figured we may as well just hit then, plus Eddie's ball was picked up and so they had to wait a while in the fairway. They didn't care at all. They're good guys."
Spieth also hit the headlines on the first day when he was issued a "monitoring penalty" after it was deemed he took too long over a birdie putt on his penultimate hole, and he saw the irony of having to play quickly to get his third round complete in near-darkness.
"How about that?", he said. "I even asked one of the officials on the seventh green if they could give us a five-minute warning when the horn is going to blow, because it's blowing earlier than it is in the States.
"I'm just fortunate that ball got in the air. We very easily could have waited another 10 and we're standing on the ninth tee."
Spieth was understandably delighted to haul himself within three of the lead after a disappointing 73 in the second round, but he believes he needs something special on the final day to make it two wins in as many starts in 2016.
"I'm struggling with my alignment on the greens, and with my wedges, so I'm not getting those extra chances but if I have a crazy round tomorrow I have a chance," he said.

McIlroy sharing lead as fog delays completion of third round in Abu Dhabi

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Rory McIlroy is part of a five-way share of the lead in the delayed third round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship after a day of drama in the desert.

The four-time Major Champion finished off his second round in stunning fashion on Saturday morning by following a birdie on the 17th hole with a tap in eagle on the 18th for a two under par 70. Fog had delayed the start of play by nearly three hours for a second consecutive day, but the Northern Irishman did not let the interruptions affect him, as he also made a strong start to his third round at Abu Dhabi Golf Club.

After the re-start, McIlroy picked up shots on the second and fourth holes, before his only bogey of the day on the fifth, but he then added another birdie on the eighth to move to ten under par for the tournament.

The four-time runner up was two shots off the pace set by playing partner Andy Sullivan when their group stood on the ninth tee, but Sullivan lost his ball off the tee and went on to card a triple bogey seven, just as fading light halted play for the day.

That meant McIlroy, who safely made par, will resume play on Sunday morning at the top of the leaderboard alongside American Rickie Fowler, who was four under through 11; South African Branden Grace, who was six under par after 16 holes; Dutchman Joost Luiten, who was three under after birdieing his tenth and final hole of the day; and Englishman Ian Poulter, who surged to the summit after making five birdies and no bogeys in the 13 holes he completed.

Sullivan also remains in contention, one shot back on nine under par, alongside Rafa Cabrera-Bello, Thomas Pieters, Henrik Stenson and Robert Rock. Meanwhile, World Number One Jordan Spieth, who is making his debut in the event, was one of only 13 players to complete their third rounds. The American posted a four under par round of 68 to move to seven under, just three shots off the pace.
Player quotes:

Rory McIlroy

“It was a solid enough nine. I obviously played them a bit better than I played them yesterday. I thought if it could have been maybe one better – had a three-putt on five - but I thought it was a solid nine holes, and I did what I needed to do. Your rhythm is a bit off (with the delays), stop and start.

“But I felt like I played well those nine holes and made a couple of nice putts, gave myself a few more chances and I’m in a decent position going into tomorrow.”

Ian Poulter
“I holed a couple of nice putts, which was key to moving up the board, and I’m quite happy. I played real solid. I was able to hit some good shots, I was able to take advantage and hole a couple of nice putts and now I find myself on the board.

“It's nice to see myself up there on the board. It's nice to get off to a good start to 2016 and hopefully I can continue that through tomorrow and have a good finish.”

Rickie Fowler

“The last two holes - ten and 11 – I hit some good shots. I made a good putt to finish on the 11th. The game feels good, I’m happy to make a couple of putts there at the last. I decided to hit the putt on 11 after the horn blew – I just wanted to make it to kind of keep things going - and I’m looking forward to getting back out tomorrow.

“I've kind of rounded into form as the week has gone on. I’m looking forward to getting back, get some food and rest. It's going to be a long day tomorrow and hopefully a lot of birdies.”

Jordan Spieth

“I’m very pleased. My short game is there when tee-to-green wasn't. But then, when my tee-to-green was on, I just didn't make anything. I just haven't made any putts this week. I've made maybe one outside of ten feet, and I've missed a few inside ten feet.

“We were on about number six when the shadows were pretty long and weren't sure if we were going to make it. We got up there and didn't really know if there were any rules around us, who tees off first.

“We let them tee off first, and I was first to tee off and as I struck my shot, the horn blew at the buzzer. We were all very, very relieved to have that happen. It saved us about five-plus hours in arriving to the course tomorrow.”

Is golf referee John Paramor  seeking to

be part of the show? High-profile timekeeper

By MICHAEL COLLINS
Senior Writer, ESPN Golf
I applaud the European Tour's moves to speed up play and agree with the concept of the penalty.
I have a problem with the way John Paramor decided he would enforce it. This is the same person who put Tiger Woods and Padraig Harrington on the clock at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in 2009, and Tiger said it may have affected his results. Paramor also penalised Tianlang Guan, a 14-year-old amateur at the Masters in 2013, almost causing him to miss the cut.
Are we seeing a pattern here? The fact that he waited until cameras were around to inform Jordan Spieth tells me he was seeking attention. Paramor reminds me of NBA referee Joey Crawford as a person who wants to be part of the show.

Dufner's 65 takes him into lead in California
FROM SKYSPORTS. COM
Jason Dufner fired a seven-under 65 to top the leaderboard after the second round of the CareerBuilder Challenge in California.
Playing the tougher Stadium Course, the 2013 US PGA Championship winner struck eight birdies, with a solitary bogey, to advance his score to 15 under.
Dufner started the day as joint leader on eight under and made hay on the front nine, peppering his card with birdies at holes one, two, five, seven, eight and nine.

"It's a difficult golf course," Dufner said. "There's a little bit of room to play off the tee, but if you get off the path a little bit, you can get into some trouble. It's definitely the most difficult of the courses we have played here."
That leaves him one shot clear of Jamie Lovemark, who carded a 65 on the Tournament Course. The American was helped by an eagle on the par-four first and five birdies.
Five men are a shot further back on 12 under, including Jason Gore, whose eight-under 64 on the Tournament Course was the best round of the day.
Another man climbing the leaderboard was Phil Mickelson, whose 65 on the Tournament Course saw him surge up 24 places to be tied eighth on 11 under.
"I'm probably a week away, if I'm being honest," Mickelson said. "But I've also won with a lot less game than I have right now."
Mickelson, now coached by Andrew Getson following his split with Butch Harmon late last year, faces the daunting Stadium Course in Saturday's third round, and he added: "I'm looking forward to the challenge and having to really focus on every tee shot to get it in play.

"But I hit a lot of good shots today on crucial tee shots and was able to get it in play. There's a lot of birdie opportunities still."
It was a disappointing day for joint overnight leaders Jeff Overton and Jerry Kelly. Overton's one-under-par 71 saw him slip down to tied 19th on nine-under while Jerry Kelly struck a 70 to move to 10 under.
