Rolling Stone shares lead with Brooks on

another SA day cut short by weather

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Brandon Stone moved into a share of the lead at The BMW SA Open hosted by City of Ekurhuleni as weather once again ended proceedings early at Glendower Golf Club, South Africa.
Daniel Brooks had been one of 78 players who had to return early on Saturday morning to complete their second rounds and he had opened up a one-shot midway lead with six birdies in his last 11 holes moving him to nine under par.
The Englishman also picked up a shot on the front nine in his third round but Stone reeled him in at ten under with five birdies in his 11 holes before the players were brought off due to the threat of lightning for the third round in a row at 1525 local time.
The final group were stood on the tenth tee when play was called off and the players will return to complete the third round at 0730 on Sunday morning.
.South African Keith Horne was level par for his front nine to sit at eight under with countrymen Chris Swanepoel and Christiaan Bezuidenhout a further shot back. Brooks is no stranger to inclement conditions, having won his only European Tour title at the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI in 2014, which was reduced to 36 holes due to the weather.
South African Stone, who has two top tens in 27 appearances on The European Tour, is regarded as a hot prospect in his homeland and won a maiden Sunshine Tour event in November.
Brooks continued where he left off in the morning as he put his approach on the first to 20 feet and rolled in the putt to get to double figures and open up a two-shot advantage over Horne.
Branden Grace finished his second round bogey-bogey to slip out of the lead in the morning but then birdied the second, a hole where he has picked up four shots this week, to move to eight under.
Grace bogeyed the fourth to drop back but Stone, who had also birdied the second, was heading in the other direction as he sank a brilliant curling putt on the fifth to get to within two of the lead.
The 22 year old gave the shot straight back on the next and Grace made it-back-to-back bogeys on the fifth with the leader also falling victim to the toughest stretch of holes on the course as he dropped a shot on the same hole after finding trouble off the tee.
His lead was soon back to two shots as Horne dropped a first shot of the day on the sixth but that did not last long with Stone recovering well from a bunker to birdie the eighth.

And soon the Lion of Africa Cape Town Open champion was alongside the leader as he made a further gain on the ninth to turn in 33 courtesy of a lengthy putt which prompted a fist-pumping celebration.
His spell at the top was short-lived with Brooks and Horne both taking advantage of the par five eighth to pick up birdies but Stone would not relent and a fifth gain of the day at the 11th moved him back to ten under.
The players were then brought off the course and after a break of almost two hours, it was announced they would not return.
Swanepoel opened with a bogey but then picked up four shots in a row from the sixth before making another gain on the 13th to get to seven under alongside Bezuidenhout who had birdies on the fourth and 11th, the former via a brilliant chip-in.
Italian Renato Paratore was then at six under courtesy of an eagle and four birdies to just a single bogey in his 17 holes with the other three men in that group all from South Africa.
Jacques Kruyswijk was one under for the day through 11 with Justin Walters having played ten in level par and Jbe Kruger one over at the turn.
Former champion Richard Sterne was then in the group a further shot back, seven under for the day through ten, with Grace at four under having found the water on the tenth and 11th.
Frenchman Grégory Bourdy was alongside Sterne at five under and he held the clubhouse lead after a 68.
Three Scots have still to complete their third rounds.
Ctaig Lee was on 142 (72-70) and sharing 10th placd.
Jamie McLeary (72-73) and David Drysdale (69-76) were sharing 32nd place on 145.

Perth amateur Daniel Young missed the cut with 79 and 76 for 155  nine shots over the limit mark.

Scot Clarke Lutton makes it to Asian Tour

Final Q School right on the limit mark

Aberdeen-born Clarke Lutton advanced today from theAsian Tour School Stage 1 eliminator to next week's Final Q School in Thailand.
Lutton did it with nothing to spare at Springfield Royal Golf Club, one of the four Thailand venues used to produce 92 qualifiers to join the exempt players next week when the top 40 and ties will gain playing rights on the 2016 Asian Tour.
A winner last year on the MENA Tour, Lutton, pictured,  had scores of 72, 73, 68 and 74 for a total of 287.  His fourth round included a quadruple bogey 8 at the second hole but birdies at the first, fifth and sixth enabled to finish in tied 22nd position at Springfield Royal Country Club, Hua Hin.
In the Scot's favour is the fact that Springfield Royal is one of the two venues for the Final Q School. Imperial Lakeview  CC is the other
Banchory's James Byrne was eliminated in the second-round cut.

Jordan Spieth fires superb second-round 64 to take four-stroke lead in Hawaii

World No 1 Jordan Spieth has taken a four-shot halfway lead at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii after a sensational second round of 64.
Spieth began the day a stroke behind Patrick Reed but surged to the top of the leaderboard with a nine-under-par round at Kapalua, which featured seven birdies and an eagle.
He has reached 16-under-par for the tournament and holds a handy advantage over a three-strong group at 12-under which includes Reed, his fellow American Kevin Kisner, and Fabian Gomez of Argentina.

Leaderboard

Spieth has yet to make a bogey in the tournament and, having kicked his second round into top gear with birdies at five, six and eight, chipped in from 36 feet at the par-five ninth.
The 22-year-old went on to make three birdies in a row from the 13th and finished in style when his 13-foot birdie putt at 18 hung theatrically on the lip for a fraction of a second before dropping into the cup.
"It was a similar round to yesterday," said Spieth. "It is nice to have no blemishes on the card.
"I want to start the year with a bang, but I'm only through 36 holes, there's a long way to go.
"Sixteen under will be difficult to duplicate. For me it comes down to no bogeys. If I can keep them down, then there are enough easy holes to get a good score."
Among the chasing pack, Reed had a 69 while Kisner and Gomez made good progress up the leaderboard with rounds of 65 and 66 respectively.
And New Zealand's Danny Lee is alone in fifth place after a 68 took him to 11-under.
Big name American duo Rickie Fowler and Bubba Watson are in the hunt, although they will need to play well this weekend to catch Spieth.
Fowler had six birdies in a 67 that took him to 10-under and Watson is in a group a shot further back after a 68.
Ireland's Padraig Harrington also carded a 68 to reach eight-under, Scotland's Russell Knox (72) is tied in 21st on three-under and Graeme McDowell (70) is two shots further back.
Australia's Jason Day, who was in glorious form last season, when his five wins included the PGA Championship, dropped three shots in his last two holes to shoot a 73 and fall back to three under.

Jonathan Thomson takes

runner-up spot in Australia

England’s Jonathan Thomson teed up a great start to 2016 when he was runner-up in the Australian Master of the Amateurs Championship at Royal Melbourne.
The 19-year-old from Lindrick in Yorkshire (image © Leaderboard Photography) held the lead briefly after a blistering start of three consecutive birdies in the final round.
But he dropped behind after bogeys on six and seven and although he gave himself every chance with birdies on 15 and 16 he couldn’t catch the eventual winner, American Aaron Wise.
Thomson finished the 72-hole championship on three-under par, two behind Wise, who is the world number eight amateur, and two shots ahead of third place.

“It's been a great first week here in Australia and I have played some great golf,” said Thomson. “The course is very special, completely different to any other course I have ever played and probably will ever play.

“I'm very pleased with my start to 2016. I have worked very hard over the winter months on my game fitness and it's nice to see it's starting to pay off.”

Thomson had been in touch throughout the championship, opening with three-under 69, holding on tight through the strong winds of the second round with 76, and climbing the leaderboard into second place with 68 in the third round. He signed off with level par 72.

Thomson, who was fourth in last year’s European amateur, is in an England squad which is touring Australia. Ashton Turner (Kenwick Park) finished 17th on 294 while Adam Chapman (Windermere) scored 305.

The trio will now be joined by Bradley Moore (Kedleston Park) who was unable to play at Royal Melbourne because of prior commitments. Their next event is the Australian Amateur which starts on Tuesday.

“Hopefully I can take my form into that event,” said Thomson.
