World Classic Championship report and leading third-round scores

Fung and Siddikur share Singapore lead

NEWS RELEASE FROM ASIAN TOUR

Singapore: Malaysia’s Nicholas Fung and Bangladesh’s Siddikur Rahman shared the third-round honours as they continued their mastery at the inaugural World Classic Championship at Laguna National today

Fung carded a two-under-par 70 while Siddikur broke par for the first time with a 69 to stay two shots ahead of the chasing pack with their three-day total of two-under-par 211 at the Laguna National Golf and Country Club.

India’s Chikka S continued his push for his maiden win on the Asian Tour by signing for a 67 to share third place with Thailand’s Danthai Boonma and Berry Henson of the United States at the US$750,000 Asian Tour event.

Fung is ready for a final day showdown in Singapore, having endured a difficult season where his best result was a tied-42nd finish in Chinese Taipei.

With a good opportunity to stake his place in the winner’s circle this week, the Malaysian knows that a cautious approach on the demanding World Classic course will be vital.

“Tomorrow, I’ll try to play like how I have been playing these few days. I will remind myself not to be greedy and get aggressive out there tomorrow.

“I will try to keep my ball in play and tell myself not to make anything worse than a bogey when I hit a bad shot,” said Fung.

Siddikur, who came close to lifting his third Asian Tour title in India last week, has another chance at glory again at the World Classic Championship.

After rounds of 71 and 71, the Bangladeshi’s patience was finally rewarded when he returned with a red number on his card.

“Honestly, I really enjoyed my round today. I gave myself very good chances out there. I managed to grab those chances and came back with a low score. I am really happy with how I played today.

“This is not an easy course. You have to be patient. It will be the same tomorrow. We are all tired and I think the player who has the strongest stamina and a good mental game will have the chance to win tomorrow,” said Siddikur.

Chikka also has another opportunity to redeem himself, having fought his way into contention but ran out of steam in India last week.

The Asian Development Tour winner posted his best score of 67 following rounds of 76 and 70 and believes he can be counted as another likely contender for the World Classic Championship.

“My scores have been improving everyday which is great. I’m confident with my game and I’ve been playing well. I didn’t putt well on the first day and even yesterday, the putts were not falling in but I made sure I hit a lot of greens to shoot a one-under in the second round.

“I played well last week too but I just didn’t manage to hang in there on the last few holes. I know my game is in shape and I am very confident with how things are going,” said the Indian.

BMW Masters report and scores from Shanghai

Ex-paratrooper Jaidee storms into lead

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Thongchai Jaidee will carry a one-stroke lead into the final round of the BMW Masters in Shanghai, where the Thai ace is bidding to secure his second victory of an already superb season.
Jaidee’s six under par third round of 66 moved him to the top of the tree on 15 under par at the expense of overnight leader Lucas Bjerregaard, but the 46 year old will have to fend off a quality chasing pack – led by World Number 11 Sergio Garcia – if he is to capture the eighth European Tour title of his career.
Former paratrooper Jaidee, currently 11th in The Race to Dubai thanks chiefly to his recent win in the European Open, will need all his battling qualities to maintain his one shot advantage over Byeong Hun An, Bjerregaard and Garcia.
Garcia’s momentum look to have stalled with a bogey at the tenth hole, but the Spaniard merely redoubled his efforts and reeled off four birdies in his closing six holes to move ominously into contention on 14 under par.
His round of 67 was bettered by one shot by An, whose bid for a BMW double remains on track following his victory earlier this year in The European Tour’s flagship event, the PGA Championship.
Bjerregaard coped with the pressure admirably for much of the day, but dropped his only shot of the day on the 16th hole to join An and Garcia in a share of second place on 14 under par.
Kristoffer Broberg lies in fifth position after a round of 64, which included an eagle on the seventh hole, moved the Swede to 13 under par, whilst sixth position is shared by a quality quintet: the English trio of Paul Casey (68), Ross Fisher (67) and Ian Poulter (68), American Patrick Reed (64) and Sweden’s Henrik Stenson (65).
Key player quotes
Thongchai Jaidee – 66 (-15 total)
“Today I hit 15 greens – that was the key. I played my irons very well, and putted well. Six under is a very good round for me today I think. I have a good chance to win tomorrow. They key will be to hit greens and then putting is key.
“Tomorrow is a very big day, if I play well like this and keep performing like this, I have a good chance. But with golf, you never know what you're feeling tomorrow.”
Byeong Hun An – 66 (-14 total)
“I wasn't counting today. I made a lot of birdie putts and hit it quite well, and I got off to a good start with a birdie. Overall, it was great. I didn't think it was that easy out there with the wind. It kind of died down the last couple holes but still, I had to focus on every shot and I was hitting it where I want to, and it seems like it worked.
“A win would be nice tomorrow. I really don't have any expectations. I’m just going to play like today and if somebody else plays better, it's not my week. I just want to play my best tomorrow.”
Sergio Garcia – 67 (-14 total)

“My back nine didn't start very well. I made a stupid really, really soft bogey on 10. And then I guess I got a couple good breaks on 13 and 14 and took advantage of it. I played the last four holes really well, so it was nice to be able to finish like that. I have given myself a shot tomorrow because I was getting a little bit far behind, so, we'll see.
“It's always exciting to be up there with a chance on Sunday. Hopefully I will play well tomorrow and keep myself up there and have a chance coming in and we'll see what we can do.”
Lucas Bjerregaard – 70 (-14 total)
“Thongchai obviously got off to a great start and Sergio made some birdies coming in. They played great and I thought I played decent out there. I just couldn't really get the putts to fall. I think I had a lot of near misses, but all in all it was a good day. I’ve just got to make a couple more putts tomorrow and hit it a little bit closer to keep up with these guys.”
Henrik Stenson – 65 (-12 total)
“It was nice - no dropped shots and I hit a lot of greens and made a few putts and kept it together nicely. I’m not super, super far behind going into Sunday but we'll certainly need another good round tomorrow to have any chance.
“To have any chance, given similar conditions tomorrow, I need to shoot seven or eight under I think again to get it close to 20. Given where I'm at in The Race to Dubai standings, I pretty much need win, win to have a chance. We will just have to try and go at it again tomorrow.
