Leadership logjam in Singapore

ASIAN TOUR NEWS RELEASE
Singapore: Singapore-based Australian Scott Barr took full advantage of his local knowledge by carding a two-under-par 69 to share the first round clubhouse lead with South Korea’s Jeunghun Wang, Australia’s Sam Brazel and Thailand’s Natipong Srithong at the World Classic Championship at Laguna National on Thursday.

Berry Henson of the United States together with Philippines’ Miguel Tabuena shared fifth place after returning with identical 70s at the US$750,000 Asian Tour event.

Play was suspended for the day due to darkness but when the sirens went off to signal the suspension of play, only six players, who have completed their round, have broken par at the challenging 6, 935 yards par-71 World Classic course dubbed ‘The Beast’.

Barr was pleased he managed to stay patient as he continues his chase for his maiden win on the region’s premier Tour.

Despite being three-over after seven holes in his starting back-nine 10, the Australian managed to recover well to move back atop the leaderboard.

“It’s great to have the local knowledge and I would say it’s definitely an advantage. There a bunch of holes through the back-nine which are really difficult and you got to be really patient.
“Just one shot here can change the mood of the day as you can easily walk off with a double or triple. I’ve experienced that before here and that’s why I’ve learnt to be really patient with myself around here,” said Barr.
Wang got more than he had bargained for when he surprised even himself to see his name among the leaders at the Laguna National Golf and Country Club.
“Actually I was not even thinking of trying to lead this tournament. I was only concentrating on making par on every hole here. It was a bonus with the birdies but I hit some pretty decent tee shots too,” said Wang, who has already posted five top-15 finishes on the Asian Tour this season.
The South Korean enjoyed a quick start when he birdied his opening par-four first. He dropped a shot on five but would pick up another gain on eight.
After turning in 34, Wang remained focused and reached home in 35 after marking his inward-nine with two birdies and another bogey on 14.
“This is definitely one of the toughest courses in Asia and you really have to be very focused. When you make a mistake, you got to recover fast as the greens are hard to read,” said Wang.
Brazel is optimistic he can ride on his good run of form coming into the Singapore showpiece.
Brazel recently finished tied-eighth and 18th in Macao and Hong Kong respectively and is hoping to put up another good showing in Singapore this week.
“My form has been solid and I’ve been hitting the ball very nicely so it has been good,” said Brazel.
Brazel credited his astute short game for giving him an early lead which he can be proud of.
“Putting is quite difficult as there’s always a danger of hitting it to the wrong spot.  But I putted nice and I managed to hit a couple of close shots and that made it a little bit easier.
“So it was nice to play solid out there as this is not an easy course,” said the Australian.
Henson, a one-time Asian Tour winner, was delighted to have slayed the ‘beast’ when he teed off in the morning and believes the plot will only thicken as the week goes on.
“I managed to sly the beast and I’m pretty ecstatic I managed to shoot under-par especially on my first attempt here. I feel that under-par is going to be a good score no matter what the conditions are.
“I think breaking par is going to be the story this week and if you can do that, you’ll be moving up the leaderboard. For now, I just super excited to be able to post a red number and I’m looking forward to doing better tomorrow,” said the American, who traded three bogeys against four birdies.
21 players have yet to complete their first round and will resume play at 7.30am (local time)

R and A NEWS RELEASE
New ticket and pricing options have been introduced for The 145TH Open at Royal Troon  next year, including a new twilight ticket and a reduction in the price of an advance purchase adult daily ticket.
The world’s leading golfers will compete to become Champion Golfer of the Year at the historic Ayrshire links from 14-17 July 2016.
Twilight tickets are being introduced for the first time, offering entry to the course from 4pm onwards on Thursday and Friday of Championship week for £25.  A limited number are available and spectators are urged to purchase in advance.
Tickets for the Championship are now on sale with the price of an adult daily ticket, purchased before 31 May, changing to £60, which is £10 less than in 2015, and £80 thereafter.
Weekly tickets, valid from Sunday 10 to Sunday 17 July inclusive, are available for £230 before 31 May, a saving of £95 on the daily ticket prices for the full week and £10 less than in 2015, and £260 thereafter.
Martin Slumbers, Chief Executive of The R&A, said, “We recognise that many people have work commitments during the week and the new twilight tickets will give them an attractive option to attend The Open. We have also made some changes this year to encourage and reward spectators who purchase tickets early which helps us with planning the services and facilities we offer at the Championship.
“The Open is one of the world’s major sporting events and is the highlight of the golfing calendar for many thousands of golf fans. Our aim is to deliver an outstanding experience for spectators and to ensure the Championship remains affordable and accessible.”
Children aged under 16, who are accompanied by an adult, receive free entry to The Open. For youths, aged 16-21, a daily ticket costs £25 before 31 May and £30 thereafter.
Spectators can look forward to another enthralling Open Championship as Zach Johnson defends the title he won in dramatic fashion in a play-off with Louis Oosthuizen, the Champion Golfer of the Year in 2010, and Australia’s Marc Leishman at St Andrews.
This will be the ninth occasion on which The Open has been played at Royal Troon, with players such as Bobby Locke, Arnold Palmer, Tom Weiskopf and Tom Watson among its illustrious list of Champions.  America’s Todd Hamilton won The Open the last time it was held there in 2004 after a play-off with Ernie Els.
Christmas gift wallets and cards are available for those who would like to make a special gift of tickets to The Open.

Garcia goes low with a 64 in BMW Masters

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Sergio Garcia was fast out of the blocks as he equalled his lowest European Tour round of 2015 with a superb eight under par 64 on the opening day of the BMW Masters, the penultimate event of The European Tour’s Race to Dubai.
The Spaniard, who posted the same score in the final round of the Omega European Masters in July, carded three birdies in the opening four holes on both nines, and registered nine birdies overall in his first competitive round at Lake Malaren Golf Club, in Shanghai.
Garcia has a one shot advantage over Frenchman Victor Dubuission, who continued the form which brought him victory in his last appearance in the Turkish Airlines Open with a flawless 65, and South Korean Byeong Hun An, who was also bogey-free as he chases a second BMW title of 2015 following his PGA Championship victory in May.
Englishman Ross Fisher, who lost in a play-off 12 months ago, is a further shot back on six under par, as his affinity with Shanghai continues following his share of third place in last week’s WGC-HSBC Champions in the same city.
He was joined in fourth position by Denmark’s Lucas Bjerregaard, who finished runner-up to Justin Rose in last month’s UBS Hong Kong Open, while Rose’s bid for back-to-back titles on Chinese soil began with a five under par round of 67, leaving the Englishman three shots off the pace in a share of sixth position with compatriot Paul Casey and Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee.
Key player quotes
Sergio Garcia – 64 (-8)
“It was nice. Conditions were quite good, not much wind, a little bit of a drizzle but other than that it was good. The course is nice. I drove the ball very well and that gave me a lot of opportunities to hit some good iron shots. So, it was a nice round.

“I got off to a nice start and I had three birdies in the first four on my front nine and then another three on the first four on the back nine. It’s the kind of round that you are looking for.

“I’m feeling a bit more comfortable, a bit better. I had a couple of rounds last week where I felt like I played better than I did in Malaysia. Hopefully I keep improving as the week goes on, and we'll be out there on Sunday having a chance.”
Victor Dubuisson – 65 (-7)
“It's been a long time I shot a low score to start a tournament. Usually I play so-so the first two rounds and I do well on the weekend where I make some good results. But to start with seven under, it feels great for confidence for the rest of the tournament.
“It’s carrying on what I did in Turkey. I feel so good on the greens. When I read the line well, I feel like the putt can only go in the hole, and you don’t have this feeling much time during the year. So yeah, it feels great.”
Byeong Hun An – 65 (-7)
“The round was just really good. I think I hit 17 or 18 greens today, so I’m quite happy with that.
I would say at least 12 or 13 holes, they were all in birdie range of say 20 feet, and I hit it really well today. I’ve been playing well the last two weeks.”
Ross Fisher – 66 (-6)
“It felt very similar to Sunday at the WGC-HSBC Champions on the greens. I just felt like I saw the lines and I had the speed dialled in. I had a few putts that slipped by, but to finish by birdieing on eight where I hit a good four iron in, and then nine, to birdie that was a bonus. So, 66 is going to make lunch taste pretty sweet.”
Justin Rose – 67 (-5)
“Last year, I started on the back nine and I was four over through four I think. From that point onwards, I made a bunch of birdies and put myself in contention to win the tournament. I had a little bit more of a smooth start today: one under through the first four. So we celebrated that.
“I played okay today. I ,ys were going low today and tried to urge myself to sort of get it to three or four under, and I actually beat my own expectations and finished five under for the round. I’m very happy with how I played the last seven or eight holes, and it was a good day’s work in the end.”
