staying on in USA as Russell Knox
Here's Duncan's reaction to his old sparring partner's victory:
"Absolutely incredible win and one that has been coming for a couple of years now. I am totally ecstatic for him and his family. They have worked so hard for this."
I suggested that during their golfing years at Jacksonville University, Duncan was rated as slightly the better of two very good players.
Duncan does not agree.
"I wouldn't say I was rated any better than Russell, to be honest. It was always who performed better on the day/week. Ever since we were juniors from about the age of 12/13 we were rivals and friends and that continued when we were room-mates and team-mates in Florida.
"I could look back with regrets that I didn't stay out there as Russell did, but I have had a great opportunity to do the same over here. I actually stayed out in the States until the summer of 2008 after graduating in 2007 and played some mini tour events but for one reason or another I came home and decided to compete in Europe.
"I would say I use Russell's success as motivation rather than looking at it as a negative. It would be very easy to say "What if I had stayed on over in the States ..?" but we can all say "What if?"
"The simple fact is I'm playing in Europe and I need to do what I can here. Ever since we were kids it was Russell's dream to play on the US PGA Tour - and win.
"Now he has achieved this and will mark off another dream/goal when he plays in the Masters next year. Hopefully I can use his success to turn my game around and perhaps we can be rivals again on the big stage."
