Londoner Davis has won over $13million

on US Tour but never a victory

FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE
Brian Davis, pictured, might not be the most well-known player on the US PGA TOUR, but the Londoner is certainly one of the most persistent and resilient.
Davis, a 10-year Tour veteran from England, is the highest-ranked player on the tour money list still in search of his first tour  win. In 337 starts before this week, he has earned $13,267,330. He’s had five runner-up finishes, including one memorable one in 2010 that we’ll revisit in a moment, but he’s yet to be the one man left standing on Sunday.
Maybe that will change this weekend at CCJ, where Davis is in the hunt after 36 holes after firing a 3-under 69 during Friday’s second round. He stands at 10 under par, five shots off the lead.
“I played well,” said Davis, 41. “I had chances coming in, but couldn’t make anything. The greens got slower and I struggled to adapt.”
Davis had five birdies, but he also had back-to-back bogeys soon after the restart following a five-hour rain delay.
Davis, who has won twice on the European Tour, has played the US  Tour full time since 2005. He has persevered despite off-the-course issues (skin cancer, two children with health problems) and the various aches and pains that come with playing for a living.
“It’s been a real struggle sometimes,” he said. “But I still love it. I love the competition. Hopefully, I have 20 more years in me. I want to keep playing competitively on TOUR another 10 years, then play the Champions Tour.”
Regardless of whether he ever gets that coveted first win, Davis will always be remembered for that tournament in 2010 that he didn’t win, when he lost to Jim Furyk in a playoff after calling a two-shot penalty on himself on the first play-off hole of the Verizon Heritage (now the RBC Heritage).
After making birdie on No. 18 in regulation to force the playoff, Davis hit his approach on the first playoff hole (18) into a hazard left of the green. The ball was playable, but in hitting his shot onto the green Davis felt his club strike a loose reed that was sticking out of the sand. He immediately called the penalty on himself, in essence handing the trophy to Furyk.
Friday, recalling that moment from five years ago, Davis said the immediate aftermath of that event was a blur. It wasn’t until hours – or even days – later, when the text messages pinged in by the hundreds, and then the emails and letters began arriving from friends and strangers from around the world, that he realized the magnitude of that one simple decision.

  • Castro extends lead at Sanderson Farms

JACKSON, Mississippi -- Roberto Castro's second round at the Sanderson Farms Championship included some sunshine, thunderstorms, a five-hour rain delay, yellowjackets and a snake.
None of it mattered. He navigated the elements and the unwelcome wildlife to shoot a 5-under 67 on Friday at the Country Club of Jackson and take a four-stroke lead.
"That's why I stay in the city," Castro said. "I'm not good in nature."
But he has been very good in Mississippi, following up a 10-under 62 on Thursday with another impressive round. The highlight was an eagle on the par-4 eighth when his 122-yard shot with a pitching wedge spun back about 10 feet into the cup.

"It's fun to get one to fall," Castro said. "Sometimes you go a couple of years without making one and then you make a couple in a couple weeks."
Bryce Molder, Jhonattan Vegas and D.J. Trahan were tied for second at 11 under. Molder shot a 69, while Vegas and Trahan had two holes remaining when play was suspended for the day.
Molder had two bogeys and five birdies, including a tricky 6-foot putt for birdie on the final hole.
"To knock it in the middle felt good, to at least finish that way," Molder said.
But the story of the day was once again Castro, a 30-year-old who is winless on the US PGA Tour in more than 100 starts.
He struggled with his driving on occasion during the second round, but made up for it with a good short game and putting. It helped that the course was once again exceptionally soft, making for forgiving landings on the green when trying to power out of the rough.
"For how much rain they've had, (the course is) holding up well," Castro said.
Castro played three holes before the five-hour delay, making a birdie on No. 3 before the rain came. His round really became interesting when play resumed.
He was on No. 5 when a yellowjacket crawled up his shirt and stung him on the left side. He said he hadn't been stung since he was a kid. Castro went to Georgia Tech and joked that he was upset "one of my own kind" attacked him.
Georgia Tech's mascot is the Yellow Jacket.
"It just kind of got up under my shirt, and I knew it, and it just got me," Castro said. "It still stings now, but it didn't really bother me.
A little later, he saw a snake, leading to his jokes with his caddie about the joys of city life.
"It was a lot to take in," Castro said. "But I feel like I stuck to my routine and made a lot of good shots."
The second round was set to resume Saturday morning local time More rain is expected.

European Tour Qualifying Stage 2 events at 4 Spanish venues

Jack Doherty loses lead but still  best placed

Scot at halfway in Spain

The 11 Scots still competing - Chris Doak has retired after one completed round - in the European Tour Qualifying School Stage 2 eliminator at four venues across Spain are at the halfway stage of the 72-hole competitions and their chances of making it through to the Final Stage at PGA Catalunya, Girona from November 14 to 19 range from very good to very bleak.

The number of qualifying spots available at each venue is likely to be between 16 and 18.
Jack Doherty, pictured, lost a share of the lead at Lumine Golf Club, Taragoma with a 70 for 135 but he is still the best placed Scot in joint sixth place, only three behind the English leader, Matt Wallace (66 for 132).
Also at Lumine, Paul Shields is sharing 12th place on 136 (67-69) but not so well placed are Daniel Young, playing as an amateur, and Neil Henderson. They  are joint 53rd and 57th respectively.
Young is on 142 (72-70) and Henderson 143 (72-71).
Aberdeen's David Law is joint ninth at El Saler Golf Club, Valencia with rounds of 68 and 72 for 140, six behind Englishman Jimmy Mullen who leads here with 69-65 for 134.
Law would have been even better placed had he not bogeyed the 18th two days in a row.
Also at El Saler, Michael Stewart from Ayrshire is up against it. He is currently joint 55th on 147 (73-74). Chris Doak retired after an opening 77.
Ross Kellett pulled himself up the standings at Las Colinas, Alicante with a second-round 67 for 138 and a share of 14th place.
The Paul Lawrie Golf Centre player covered his last 11 holes in five under par. Kellett is six behind English leader Jamie Rutherford (65 for 132)
Edinburgh's Mark Hillson and Bradley Neil from Blairgowrie are sharing 32nd place on 141 at Panoramica Golf Club, Castellon, 13 shots behind the Spanish amateur, Scott Alexander, who is setting a blisering pace at this venue  with a 16 under par tally of 128 (62-66)
Hillson has shot 68 and 73; Neil 70-71. Neil bogeyed the 16th and 17th in his second round.
Also at Panoramica, Craig Lawrie, watched by his father Paul, is in joint 61st place although only one over par on 145 (73-72)
Young Lawrie's putter is "stone cold" ... he parred his last nine holes in the second round
Grantown on Spey's Duncan Stewart, playing out of Turnhouse, had a nightmare inward half of 42 for a second-round 76 and a halfway tally of 146 which has him well out of contention in a share of 66th place.  Sub-par third and fourth rounds are a must for Stewart.

USA CHAMPIONS' TOUR FINALE

Langer two off the lead at the Charles Schwab

Cup Championship but Monty trails

Langer can defend his Champions Tour title this weekend

Bernhard Langer remains in a strong position to defend his Champions Tour season points title, despite dropping from the lead at the second round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.

Second round leaders

-11 Michael Allen (USA)
-9 Bernhard Langer (Ger)
-8 Billy Andrade (USA)
-8 Kenny Perry (USA)
-7 Jeff Sluman (USA)
-7 Olin Browne (USA)
Others
-6 Tom Lehman (USA)
-4 Mark O'Meara (USA)
-2 Colin Montgomerie (Sco)
-1 Jeff Maggert (USA)
+2 Ian Woosnam (Wal)
The 58-year-old was top of the leaderboard after an opening round 63 on Desert Mountain's Cochise Course, but could only follow that up with a two-under 68 as Michael Allen moved in to a two-stroke lead.
Langer, who came in to this week third in the points standings behind pacesetter Colin Montgomerie and Senior Open champion Jeff Maggert, birdied three of his opening four holes before carding a three-putt bogey at the seventh.

After restoring his lead with a gain at the ninth, the two-time Masters champion bogeyed the 12th after failing to get up-and-down from the rough and missed a eight-foot par save at the 17th before finishing with a gain at the last.
"Things just didn't go my way," Langer said. "I think 68 is most of the time a great score, just not necessarily today for me when I had that start, 3 under after four. I really had it going."

Allen, without a win this year, was left frustrated after being warned for slow play but picked up five shots over his final six holes to post a six-under 64.
Having chipped in at the short 13th and post a two-putt gain at the par-five 15th, Allen posted a ten-foot birdie at the 17th before moving in to the outright lead by sinking a 30-foot eagle the last.
"It was just a little bit lucky," Allen said about the final putt. "I knew it wouldn't break quite as much, at least I thought it wouldn't, but it was really hard to see with the sun in my eyes.
"I was just trying to get the right speed because when the sun's in your eyes like that, you can sometimes hit it a little hard and kind of lose it a little bit. I was happy it was really close, but it went in."
Montgomerie sits nine off the lead in a tie for 18th after a two-under 68, while Maggert sits in the group a further stroke adrift.
