Bradley Neil shares lead at Quinta do Lago

Blairgowrie's Bradley Neil is in a three-way tie for the lead with one round to go in the individual section of the PGAs of Europe Invitational pro-am at the Laranjal course at Quinta do Lago on Portugal's Algarve coastline.

Neil, pictured, has had rounds of 70 and 67 for seven-under-par 137, a total matched by England's David Griffiths (70-67) and Spain's Victor Garcia (68-69).
Neil looked set for a clear lead after 36 holes when he was five under par after 11 holes in the second round but he could manage only level for his last seven holes with a bogey at the 12th and a birdie at the 16th.
There are four other Scots in the field.
John Henry (Clydebank and Dist) is tied ninth on 140 (69-71).
James McGhee (Bishopbriggs) has had rounds of 69 and 75 for 144 and 15th place.

Turkish Airlines Open and all the scores

Van Zyl leads by two but big names lurking
EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
South African Jaco Van Zyl maintained his lead in the second round of the Turkish Airlines Open, but several world-class names – including four-time Major winner Rory McIlroy – are lurking ominously behind him.
Van Zyl followed his first-round 61 with a steady three under par 69 at the Montgomerie Maxx Royal in Antalya, Turkey to reach 14 under overall, two strokes ahead of Englishmen Richard Bland (65) and Chris Wood (66).
All three will be wary of the presence of current Race to Dubai leader McIlroy, who ensured it was another bogey-free round by brilliantly saving par at the last after a wayward drive cost him a penalty drop.
A 67 moved the Northern Irishman up to ten under par in joint sixth, one ahead of his compatriot Graeme McDowell, who had seven birdies in a superb 65.
McDowell’s Ryder Cup team-mate Victor Dubuisson, who won here in 2013, signed for a 64 to move up to 11 under, while young Englishman Matthew Fitzpatrick, who won the British Masters three weeks ago, went one better, a 63 propelling him into a share of 11th place on eight under.
The Turkish Airlines Open is the first of four lucrative events comprising the Race to Dubai’s Final Series. With eight million points on offer at each, it heads to the WGC-HSBC Champions and the BMW Masters, both in Shanghai, before the season finale, the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.
Quotes
Jaco Van Zyl
“I felt really comfortable out there and played nicely. Unfortunately a couple of loose shots on the back nine cost me a couple of shots. The fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth are four good holes, playing into the breeze, and I was hitting a lot of long irons into slopey greens. I didn’t make as many putts as I did yesterday but overall I’m happy and enjoying it. We practise for hours and hours to be in this position so it’s nice to be able to enjoy it.”
Chris Wood
“I’ve come back from quite a serious injury. I broke my scaphoid bone in my wrist and it was quite a long road back, so it’s a relief more than anything to be playing such nice golf. Today the goal was to cut into Jaco’s lead. It’s not often you shoot 66 and are five shots behind. Hopefully I can catch him tomorrow, maybe pass him, but I want to give myself a chance on Sunday.”

Victor Dubuisson
“This is definitely one of my favourite courses. My season hasn't been great and I haven’t played as many tournaments, so I was counting on the Final Series to maybe improve my ranking. I changed my putter a few months ago. I was a little bit in trouble the first few weeks, but now I can see on the green that I hole more putts from ten feet and that makes a difference.”
Rory McIlroy
“I felt like it was a round that could have been a bit better, especially the way I played in the middle of the round. Not taking advantage of some of the holes coming in is a little disappointing, but any time you can go the first 36 holes of a tournament without a bogey it’s not too bad. When I looked at the leaderboard on the fourth hole, I was ten shots back at that point, so to go from ten shots back to only four back going into the weekend, it’s really not that much.”

Smith wins play-off for £20,000 title
By NICK TEALE
Jordan Smith won a four-hole play-off to claim the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour’s £20,000 Matchroom Sport Tour Championship title at Desert Springs Resort in Spain, and with it the Order of Merit crown.
The victory sees Rookie of the Year Smith land inside the top five and earn a Challenge Tour card for 2016 alongside Darren Wright, Sam Connor, Marcus Armitage and Aaron Rai.
Smith won the Tour Championship on the fourth extra hole having carded a final-round 64, eight-under-par, to set the -13 pace which was matched by Rai (68, 68, 67; DCD Group) and Daniel Gavins (67, 65, 71; Walton Driving Range).
For Rai a place in the play-off assured him a top-five finish but for Smith and Gavins they would need to claim victory to edge Gary King out of the Challenge Tour positions.
Yorkshireman Gavins, who had been unwell during his last two rounds, dropped out of the play-off on the third extra hole when he bogeyed the par-four 18th.
Rai exited on the following additional hole when his approach found greenside water and he was forced to take a penalty drop while Smith held his nerve to make par and land himself promotion to the Challenge Tour in his first season as a professional.
“I am over the moon,” said Smith, who takes home a new Motocaddy Trolley, Bushnell Tour X Range Finder, Bolle Sunglasses and £500 to spend with HotelPlanner.com as well as the £20,000 winner’s cheque.
“It was tough, I am mentally and physically drained but I am delighted.
“Winning the Order of Merit is the icing on the cake and I am looking forward to playing the Challenge Tour now. My target for the season was to get a win so to get another is above and beyond what I was expecting.”
Rai had sat fifth on the Order of Merit ahead of this event with only a narrow margin between himself and the chasing pack. With the entire field at Desert Springs feasibly able to catch him, the pressure had been on to cement his place in the top five and earn the Challenge Tour card which comes with it.
“I feel great to have earnt my Challenge Tour card,” he said. “That was the aim at the start of the week. It is disappointing to lose the play off but Jordan deserves it – he had a great round today and has played well all week. I am very much looking forward to next year now.”
Highlights of the Matchroom Sport Tour Championship air on Sky Sports on Tuesday, November 10 with a HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour season review show to be broadcast seven days later.

CIMB CLASSIC report and scores

There's no doubting Thomas - 61 to take halfway lead

ASIAN TOUR NEWS RELEASE

Kuala Lumpur: American Justin Thomas shot a stunning career low 11-under-par 61 to snatch the halfway lead at the US$7 million CIMB Classic on Friday with a tournament record of 15-under-par 129.

The 22-year-old Thomas produced a master class performances in rewriting a new low score at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club’s West course, sinking one eagle and nine birdies to lead by one from countryman Brendan Steele, who came home in 63.

Overnight leader Scott Piercy settled for a 69 to lie two off the pace alongside Spencer Levin (64) and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama (66) in the tournament sanctioned by the Asian Tour and PGA TOUR.

Current Asian Tour number one Anirban Lahiri of India, who is also now a US PGA Tour member, carded a 67 for tied 21st place with amongst others, second-ranked Australian Scott Hend of Australia, who shot a 70.

Thomas, seeking a maiden victory on the PGA TOUR in his first visit to Asia, was delighted to walk away with the halfway lead. “It was obviously a great day. It was one of those days when you kind of get unconscious and get rolling out there. They don't happen too often,” said Thomas, whose two-day total is the lowest in CIMB Classic history in relation to par although the preferred lie ruling has been in effect in the opening two rounds.

“I just got off to a good start. Being five-under through five, that got me in it and kind of got me in that attack mind frame. I gave myself a lot of really close, easy birdie putts. If I missed the green, I missed it in a good spot where I could get it up-and-down. So it was a fun day.”

Thomas arrived in Malaysia on the back of some good form following his best outing on Tour with a third place finish at the Frys.com Open two weeks ago. He went out in 30, which included a six-foot eagle conversion on three after rifling a five iron into the green.

When the world number 64 reached 11-under through 15, the magical score of 59 seemed a possibility but Thomas could not snare the two more birdies required in his last three holes.

“It (59) first came up in my mind after I birdied 11 and 12, when I got to eight-under through 11, I felt like that I had a chance. You don't think about it too much really, so I tried not to. After I birdied 14 and 15, I knew I just needed to get two of my last three. And I mean, they're all pretty easy holes. So it was obviously unfortunate not to get that number but I'm sure I'll have many more chances in my career,” said Thomas, who has needed only 25 putts per round so far this week.

A close friend of newly installed US PGA Tour Player of the Year, Jordan Spieth, Thomas is hoping to break into the winner’s circle by bagging the CIMB Classic.  “Obviously, it's a great position to be in, but there's a lot of golf left. I just need to keep firing. You need to make a lot of birdies just to kind of keep pace or get ahead of pace. So I just need to stay patient and play well and have some fun out there,” said Thomas.

Steele, chasing a second PGA TOUR win, was also bogey-free as he stayed hot on the new leader’s heels with seven birdies and one eagle on the third hole. “I'm doing a lot of things well right now,” said the 32-year-old, whose best finish in the event was tied 25th two years ago.

“I'm putting the ball in some pretty good spots. I've got a little more length than I had the last time I was here in 2013, so I can cover a few more bunkers.”

World number 15 Matsuyama, sank three birdies in his opening five holes and just as many in his closing five holes for a bogey-free day to stay in contention for a second title on the PGA TOUR. He knows he must convert more birdie chances where he is tied first in greens hit in regulation.

“I played well again. I didn't quite hit the ball or putt it as well as I did yesterday, but I'm happy the way I got it around and into the hole,” said the 23-year-old, who is also five-time winner in Japan.

The Japanese star believes the heat and humidity can be a factor this weekend. “When it's so hot, we all sweat a lot and it's important to make sure I've got a towel handy and don't let my grips get wet at all. Also, the concentration level that you need is much more difficult in the heat and you really need to be careful,” said Matsuyama.

Defending champion Ryan Moore, bidding a three-peat at the CIMB Classic, carded a 69 to lie in tied 15th place on 136, some seven shots back of the lead.
