Paul Lawrie Foundation Winter Series from Tain and Royal Dornoch to Lossiemouth
NEWS RELEASE
The Paul Lawrie Foundation, which began activities within the Highlands and North regions of the country earlier this year, thanks to the support of four businesses located in the area - Cairngorm Windows, Clubhouse Hotel, Hawco Group and The Nairn Golf Club - today launched a winter programme of events that will be hosted at some of Scotland's top courses.
The events are aimed at boys and girls aged 18-and-under and will tee-off at Nairn Golf Club on Sunday 15th November. In between this and the final event at Castle Stuart Golf Links at the end of March, the Winter Series will also visit Lossiemouth's Moray (New Course), Royal Dornoch (Championship) and Tain golf clubs.
Fraser Cromarty, CEO of The Nairn Golf Club and Chairman of the Highland Golf Links partnership organisation, said: "We are delighted to be able to host the first of the Foundation's Winter Series events, which will allow kids to continue to play competitive golf between November and March.
The HGL partner clubs each recognise the importance of supporting junior golf. They were obvious venues at which to host Paul's Foundation's Winter Series and signed-up straight away. With Moray and Tain golf clubs also agreeing to stage an event each, the juniors taking part will have a terrific variety of top quality golf courses against which they can test themselves and improve their skills."
Speaking about the launch from Sydney, where he's currently delivering golf days for long-term Foundation supporter, Aberdeen Asset Management, Paul was enthused about the prospect of competitive golf over the winter months for the kids:
"I'm grateful to the five host venues for supporting what we want to do with the series; giving the boys and girls an opportunity to continue to be competitive whilst motivating them to keep working on their games over the winter months."
"We're fortunate to have so many high quality venues relatively close together and the guys taking part will, I'm sure, enjoy both the challenge of the courses and the competition against their peers."
Paul Lawrie Foundation Winter Series Programme:
Event 1 - Sunday 15th November, Nairn Golf Club
Event 2 - Saturday 12th December, Moray Golf Club (New Course)
Event 3 - Saturday 23rd January, Royal Dornoch Golf Club (Championship)
Event 4 - Saturday 20th February, Tain Golf Club
Event 5 - Sunday 27th March, Castle Stuart Golf Links
Entry to these events is via the Foundation website www.paullawriefoundation.co.uk<http://www.paullawriefoundation.co.uk>

Virto happy to take away two shot Chinese lead
EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Borja Virto Astudillo’s love for Chinese food helped him to extend his lead at The Foshan Open after the Spaniard carded a five under par second round 67 to move two shots clear of the field heading into the weekend.
The 24 year old opened with a 64 in the penultimate event of the European Challenge Tour season to hold a one shot lead, and he continued his flawless form with a second consecutive bogey-free round which helped him to a 13 under total.
He did not have quite as an explosive start to his second round as the first – when he began the $500,000 tournament with three successive birdies – but two closing birdies at the eighth and ninth, having teed off on the tenth, mean he enters the weekend with momentum and confidence aplenty.
Virto Astudillo admitted he was both excited and nervous about the weekend but, having claimed a maiden Challenge Tour title at the D+D REAL Slovakia Challenge in July, knows he has experience on his side.
“Obviously it’s exciting,” said the Pamplona-born player, who currently sits right on the brink of European Tour graduation at 15th position in the Road to Oman Rankings. “At the same time it’s easy to get nervous about it so I’m just going to focus on the excitement part and just try to do my best and fight for every shot out there.
“Having won already in Slovakia, that’s going to help me a lot going into the weekend, because I know I have been in a similar situation before, and that’s really big in these kinds of situation where there is a lot of pressure involved. Hopefully I can continue to play my best over the weekend and just have fun.
“It’s nice to go into the weekend on 13 under after two rounds and the game feels good so hopefully I can keep it up.Virto Astudillo has not kept his love for Chinese food a secret this week and he is really enjoying his first visit to the most populous nation on earth – something which is having a positive effect on his game.
“It’s my first time in China and I really like it here,” he said. “The golf course is great, in really good condition and I really like the set-up of it. The greens are pure, a bit grainy so sometimes it’s hard to read the putts, but I really like it that way.
“The clubhouse and the facilities here are very good too, I like them a lot, and the people and culture are cool. It’s my first time in China but I’m enjoying it a lot and I love Chinese food – I’ve always enjoyed it - so it’s great to get some over here!”
Haydn Porteous remained in second place after he signed for a four under par 68, which included six birdies and two bogeys, to enter the weekend with an 11 under total.
“There was not actually that much difference between today and the first day,” said the Johannesburg player. “Obviously I had a great back nine, four birdies and no bogeys. I missed a ten footer at the ninth to get it to five under at the turn.

First mixed European team championships to
be played at Gleneagles in summer of 2018
NEWS RELEASE
Scotland
will play host to the world’s first joint men’s and ladies golf
competition following the announcement that the inaugural European Golf
Team Championships will be played at The Gleneagles Hotel in 2018.
The
historic event, which will incorporate both a team and an individual
format, forms part of the inaugural multi-event European Sports
Championships to be held across Glasgow and Berlin in a unique
partnership
with some of Europe’s top sports.
Backed
by both the European Tour and the Ladies European Tour, the European
Golf Team Championships will see men and women compete for their
countries on the same course at the same time in top-level competition
for the first time in the history of the sport.
The
announcement was made following a meeting by the European Sports
Championships 2018 Board where it was agreed gymnastics and golf would
join the already impressive line-up of sports.
The
European Sports Championships are being funded by The Scottish
Government and Glasgow City Council, with the EventScotland team within
VisitScotland’s Events Directorate leading on preparations for the golf
event on behalf of Scotland.
To
be staged in the summer of 2018, around 2900 athletes will come to
Scotland as part of a total delegation of around 8200 including
officials, media and others. A further 1500 athletes will compete in
Berlin
as part of the exciting new 10 to 12 day fixture on the world’s
sporting calendar.

Justin Rose leads by one in Hong Kong
Hong
Kong: England’s Justin Rose took a one-shot
advantage by carding a second round four-under-par 66 to lead the UBS
Hong Kong Open on Friday.
The
world number seven, who had previously missed the cut at the Hong Kong
showpiece in 2011, restored his confidence with the Hong Kong Golf Club
by posting a two-day
total of nine-under-par 131 to sit atop the leaderboard at the US$2
million event sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.
Denmark’s
Lucas Bjerregaard secured outright second with another 66 while Chinese
Taipei’s Lu Wei-chih, who is continuing his recovery from a brain
tumour surgery suffered
three years ago, battled through fatigue to trail Rose by two shots in
tied-third place alongside England’s Ian Poulter.
India’s Anirban Lahiri and Korea’s Y.E. Yang were among the five players bunched in equal fifth place on matching 134 total.
Rose,
who is among one of the pre-tournament favourites, started out strongly
with birdies on 14 and 18 to get into the share of the lead, having
started the day tied
for third.
He
then rolled in a 15-foot putt from the edge of the green on the third
hole to get to eight-under. Ross made another birdie on four, dropped
his first shot of the
day on nine before recovering immediately with a birdie on his last to
snatch the outright lead.
“I’m
obviously in a wonderful position going into the weekend. This course
has given me some trouble the last time I played it, so it was nice to
figure out more of
a decent game plan, which paid off so far,” said Rose.
Lu continued to spearhead the Asian challenge like he did on the opening day of the UBS Hong Kong Open.
“It
took me a few holes to get into the rhythm, just like the first round. I
started gaining my confidence after a few holes and the putts started
to drop,” said Lu.
“But
toward the end of the round, I felt pretty tired and most of my drives
ended up in the rough. Fortunately, I saved a few pars coming home,”
added the father-of-two
who marked his card with four birdies, one bogey and a double-bogey.
Poulter,
who made a last-minute dash to Hong Kong so as to fulfil his membership
requirements on the European Tour, delighted the crowds by racing off
the blocks quickly
with four birdies and a bogey in his opening nine holes.
Poulter,
who won the UBS Hong Kong Open title in 2010, then picked up further
gains on the third and fourth holes before dropping another shot on
nine.
“I don't play to take part. I play to win. Even coming in as late as I did, my mind was focused on shooting a good score.
“So
albeit I had not played a practice round, I've got good memories of
this golf course. I know the place and I like it. And hopefully I can
have a good weekend” said
Poulter.
Lahiri
also believes he can move into contention during the weekend despite
signing for a 67 which left him three shots back of Rose.
“I'm
feeling good. I think I'm playing some of my best golf in terms of how
I'm hitting it. It has not been good in terms of scoring over the two
days as it could easily
have been in double digits.
“But
you know, if I can keep hitting it like this on the weekend and give
myself some chances, I'll be pretty happy,” said Lahiri.
The weekend cut was set at even-par with 76 players making the cut.
