Andy Sullivan scores third European Tour win of season in Portugal Masters

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Andy Sullivan from Nuneaton became the first man to win three European Tour events this season as he claimed a stunning wire-to-wire victory at the Portugal Masters.
The Englishman, pictured with the championship trophyt by courtesy of Getty Images (c) came into the final round with a five- shot lead and a 66 extended that to nine shots as he finished on 23 under 261 and saw off the challenge of playing partner Chris Wood who finished on 270.
Overnight rain and a threat of storms had led to the shotgun start being delayed by two hours at Oceånico Victoria Golf Club, Vilamoura but Sullivan was unfazed as he added to The South African Open Championship Hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni and the Joburg Open titles he won earlier in the year.
The 28 year old became the fifth wire-to-wire winner of the season and blew away the record winning margin at the event which had been Alexander Levy's three shot victory last year.
The win moves Sullivan into the top 50 of the World Rankings and means he has three wins in 23 events after not claiming a victory in his first 84 on the European Tour.
After two solid pars to start, Sullivan left himself a testing six-footer on the third but he found the middle of the cup as playing partners Eduardo de la Riva and Wood both dropped shots to see his lead extended to six shots.
A curling 25-foot putt on the fourth then moved Sullivan to 19 under and when he found the fifth green in two and left his eagle putt right next to the hole, it was back-to-back birdies.
De la Riva also made a birdie to get to 13 under but nobody was able to put any pressure on the leader whose cushion was seven shots.
The Spaniard picked up another shot on the tricky seventh - which had yielded just 25 birdies over the first three days - but he gave it back on the ninth and Sullivan remained comfortable at the turn.
De la Riva dropped further shots on the tenth and 12th to end his chances while back-to-back birdies on the 11th and 12th moved Wood to 14 under. The 12th was proving gettable in the final round and Jorge Campillo made an eagle to get to 14 under while Trevor Fisher Jnr had also moved into a share of second with five birdies.
The lead was briefly extended to seven shots courtesy of Sullivan's third birdie of the day on the 14th but Campillo ahead on the 15th made a gain of his own to move into second spot all alone at 15 under.
Fisher Jnr got himself back into a share as he picked up a shot on the 14th and the battle now was very much about who would be runner-up with Sullivan picking up two pars on the 15th and 16th to maintain his lead.
Campillo then found the water to record a double bogey on the 17th but Fisher Jnr lost two shots himself on the 15th and all of a sudden Sullivan's lead was up to seven shots with Wood the nearest challenger.
Birdies on the 17th and 18th then moved the leader to 23 under as a bogey on the last from De la Riva, who had birdied the 13th, 15th and 17th handed Wood second place.
"Apprehensive to start, I was a little bit edgy and I think that putt on four really settled me down and from there onwards I just felt really comfortable all the way round," Sullivan added,
"I didn't really feel like I took that many risks until the end there and I just thought I'd play within myself and let them try and catch me.
"I'm not going to make any mistakes, and I didn't today.
"Bogey free is unbelievable, it's just what I wanted to do and it's just incredible."
De la Riva finished on 13 under alongside Fisher Jnr and Anthony Wall who recorded six birdies and a bogey in a 66.
Campillo followed his double on the 17th with a bogey on the last to drop into the group at 12 under which also contained Belgian Thomas Pieters, who closed with a 69, and Scotsman Craig Lee.
Lee came into the week 120th in the Race to Dubai but rounds of 67-71-69-65 gave him a share of sixth and a massive boost as the race to get into the top 110 comes down to its final event next week in Hong Kong.
There were seven players in a share of ninth at 11 under with Bernd Ritthammer finishing with a 65 to join Lucas Bjerregaard, Edouard Espana, Stephen Gallacher, Mikko Korhonen, Garth Mulroy and Robert Rock.
Anders Hansen was playing in his 419th and final event on the European Tour and the Dane shot a closing 69 to finish on eight under.

McIlroy laughs off near-miss by tee shot from

behind in US Tour event

Maybe soccer isn't the only sport that can put Rory McIlroy's health in danger.
The World No. 3 was chipping near the drivable par-4 17th green during the third round of the Frys.com Open on Saturday when a missile from the tee box, courtesy of Emiliano Grillo, came flying right at McIlroy.
The Northern Irishman was possibly a mere feet from getting hit square in the head. Luckily, the ball missed McIlroy entirely, and he had a good bit of humour about the situation in the aftermath.
"It would have put me out of my misery, to be honest with you," McIlroy said of the near-miss following a 1-under 71 that dropped him to T-39.
Grillo, for his part, posted an apology regarding the incident.

Russell Knox misses halfway cut in California

Justin Rose tied fourth, only two shots off the

lead as Martin Laird falls back

FROM SKYSPORTS.COM

Justin Rose made four birdies and kept a bogey off his card
Justin Rose made four birdies and kept a bogey off his card
Justin Rose birdied two of the last three holes to get within two shots of leader Brendan Steele after the third round of the Frys.com Open in California.

The Ryder Cup star carded a blemish-free 68 to move to 12 under 204 for the tournament as Steele held off a series of challenges to maintain the lead he has held since his opening 63 at Silverado Country Club in the Napa Valley.
Rose struggled to get much going on the greens as he parred the first seven holes before breaking the shackles with a 10-foot birdie putt at the eighth, and his 110-yard approach to the next was the perfect distance and left him a tap-in from 18 inches for another birdie.

He missed makeable chances from inside 12 feet at 11, 12 and 13, but he rolled in his third birdie putt of the round at the 16th and added another from six feet at 17 before settling for a closing par at the par-five last after finding a fairway bunker with his drive.
Rose will go into the final round two adrift of Steele, who carded four birdies and one bogey in a solid 69 which left him one clear of fellow Americans Andrew Loupe and Kevin Na.
"I played better than I scored," Steele said. "That was a great round that Andrew shot.  The way it firmed up at the end yesterday and how firm it was today, you really had to be on your game in order to do that. I guess you never underestimate the talent level out here."
Loupe had made the first significant move of the day and threatened something special when he birdied the opening five holes, only to bogey the sixth despite having only 83 yards to the pin for his second shot.
He picked up another birdie at nine and reeled off four in a row from the 14th before a par at the last completed a superb 63 to match Steele's first-round card.
Na cruised to the turn in 32 and broke a run of six pars with his fifth birdie of the day at 15, and he then knocked a sublime second to six feet at the long 16th and rolled in the putt for eagle.
He added another birdie at the last to cap a faultless 64 and join Loupe on 13 under, while Jason Bohn was also eight under for the day after a remarkable mid-round run of six birdies in eight holes followed by three more over the last four.
Martin Laird will have Rory McIlroy as a playing partner for th final round after dropping down the scoreboard with a third-round 74, following a 65 and a 71, to be T39 on 210.
Fellow Scot Russell Knox missed the halfway cut by a shot with scores of 69 and 74 for 143.

Matt Kuchar wins windy Fiji International by

four strokes

NEWS RELEASE
After raging winds and a challenging four days, Matt Kuchar emerged victorious at the 2015 Fiji International.
After starting the final round with a two shot lead, Kuchar fired a 3-under 69 which saw the the World Number 16 end the week
on 4-under the card and four shots ahead of Australian professional,
Aron Price.

"Its been a great week. It's been so much fun to have the family here and have Dad caddying for me. To finish on top has
really made it an excellent week, one I'm sure I'll never forget," said the American.
"I knew I had to play some really good golf to have a chance at this title and I played some great golf this week. I  was excited to come out on top

"Winning is a hard thing to do regardless of where you are, US PGA or Fiji, there are great players everywhere."
Kuchar pulled away from the field early , thanks to four birdies on the front nine which were helped by calmer weather conditions.
"With the wind blowing the way it was on Thursday and Friday, if you're not  hitting it well, you many not break 90, it was that challenging."
The Fiji International is Kuchar's first win since the RBC Heritage on the US PGA Tour in April 2014.
It was also his first appearance at the Fiji International after arriving fresh from a team USA win at last week's Presidents Cup in South Korea.
It is hoped that Kuchar will return in 2016 to defend his title, alluding to the fact that it would not take much for him to return to Fiji.

"We've
had an amazing time in Fiji and you probably don't have to twist my arm
too hard to get me back to Fiji. It's been a great week and certainly
it's a destination I enjoy getting back to."

Price meanwhile went bogey free in the final round firing 1-under 71 to finish his week on even par and outright second.
"I hit 16 greens in regulations, on the two I missed I made pars I didn't have a bogey all day, just not enough birdies," said Price.
Rounding out the top-5 finishes at this year's Fiji International were Vijay Singh, Ryan Fox and Nick Cullen
Hometown hero Singh had a bogey free round,  shooting a course record of 7-under  65 that included seven birdies to finish 1-over the card to tie for third with Fox and Cullen.

New Zealander Fox fired 5-under 67 which included seven birdies to finished the week on 1-over the card.
A costly double bogey on the front nine made things though for Cullen, who also managed to fire seven birdies in his round of 5-under 67, to join Singh and Fox on 1-over.
