CHALLENGE TOUR REPORT AND SCORES

Half-Irish Coles on fire in Mount Wolseley

 EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Robert Coles credited his Irish lineage to his remarkable form on the Emerald Isle as the Englishman moved into the first round lead at the Volopa Irish Challenge hosted by Mount Wolseley Hotel Spa and Golf Resort.
Coles is the de facto defending champion this week, having beaten Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts in a play-off on the Challenge Tour’s last visit to the Republic of Ireland in 2009, and he admitted that his love for his mother’s native land was a factor as he picked up from where he left off six years ago with a seven under par opening round 65 at the pristine Carlow parkland.
The 43 year old’s victory in nearby County Kildare was his last of three Challenge Tour wins but he moved into the driving seat to add a fourth title to his repertoire as he opened up a two-shot gap at the top of a packed leaderboard.
Having teed off at the tenth, the two-time Challenge Tour graduate embarked on a run of five birdies in six holes from the 12th, with a bogey at the 16th meaning he reached the turn in four under, before further gains at the fifth, seventh and eighth holes moved him to the front.
“My mother is Irish so maybe that’s got something to do with my good form here,” said Coles. “I suppose it’s just luck that it’s worked out like that. I did think of 2009 this week, but I certainly didn’t realise I was in some way the defending champion.
“I am quite proud of my Irish roots. My mum lives in west Cork and all of my in-laws are Irish. I’m married to a girl called Sinéad too so there’s a strong connection there. I am proud of that.
“I got on a little run and the putter was very kind to me. I hit a couple of good shots and really putted well on that back nine. I holed some good putts. I hung on a bit at the turn and then made another couple of putts, then I had a good up and down on nine to save par.
“The par fives are reachable for most so you’re going to have some chances there, and there are some good holes that you need to save par. You have some chances and on the other end you have a few tough holes that you just want to get through. It’s a good mixture.
“It’s a great event here, there’s been a really good atmosphere, we had a great time at the Pro-Am, a fantastic dinner on Tuesday and the buzz is really good around the place. I think everybody’s enjoying it.”
Four players sat two shots off the pace on five under par, including promising young French amateur Romain Langasque, the reigning Amateur Champion. The 20 year old has had a summer to remember, making the cut at The Open at St Andrews, and he has been enjoying himself in just his fourth Challenge Tour appearance.
“My game was really good today,” said the Cabris player. “I was driving really well so I was on almost every fairway – I think I just missed one – and that’s very important on this course. You can make a lot of birdies if you get on the fairway.
“My driving is really good so I have to keep driving it well and if I do that, I think it will be a good week for me. But I’m just going to try to do my best on every shot and have an enjoyable time.”
Daniel Im was another man tied for second place, still on a high after proposing to his girlfriend in Rome last week, as were Welshman Stuart Manley and Northern Irishman Richard Kilpatrick.

USA take 4-1 lead on first day of Presidents Cup

NEWS RELEASE
INCHEON, SOUTH KOREA: Anirban Lahiri and Thongchai Jaidee endured a disappointing 5 and 4 foursomes defeat to Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker in their Presidents Cup debut as the United States romped to a commanding 4-1 lead after the opening day on Thursday.
With Fowler rolling in three birdies in the opening four holes to go 3-up early on at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea, Lahiri and Thongchai found themselves on the back foot for much of their match which reflected how the day went for the Internationals.
“No, no, no, I think both Thongchai and I were nowhere close to our best. We both struggled, and I think we just lost momentum. "There were opportunities that I could have made a few more putts definitely, and then I think on the back nine we just let it all get away from us really quick,” said Lahiri, the current Asian Tour number one.
“He (Fowler) putted great all day. If I'm not mistaken, he must have made about six or seven one-putts, and none of them were inside of 10 feet. It helps when you're playing match play.”
A disappointed Thongchai added: “We played okay, but the guys, Rickie especially, putted so well. He holed out from everywhere. We had a lot of mistakes with the putter, not in form.”
Lahiri did not offer excuses for his disappointing debut in the biennial contest. “When you play badly, you want to assume as much responsibility for it. I'm sure Thongchai feels the same way. It's one of those days,” he said.
“The first hole, we had an opportunity (to win) but didn't take it. Second, I didn't make it and third we went from a position of strength and suddenly we found ourselves three down through four. Yeah, I think I let one get away from me on seven, the par-five. That was an important putt because we could have gotten some momentum back. But, yeah, very disappointed to finish the way we did.
“We didn't make a single birdie in 14 holes, and we hit 13 fairways. I mean, we only missed one fairway on 10 and did not make a birdie. So that tells you that we didn't putt well, and that's what you need.”
Lahiri will lead the cheering squad on Friday after Captain Nick Price opted to rest him from Friday’s Fourball session. The Indian believes the Presidents Cup, which has been dominated by the US who has won eight of 10 editions, is far from over.
“It's a long ways to go. It's not an ideal start. You don't want to find yourself chasing, but now that we are in that position, we're going to chase it down,” he said.
On Wednesday night, Lahiri, the first Indian to play in the Presidents Cup, stood proudly alongside his teammates and the US Team, and enjoyed the pleasure of hearing his national anthem being played during the opening ceremony.
“It was very special. Extremely special. There's not a lot of times in your career that it will happen, and the times that it does happen it really makes you feel like all the effort, everything that you've put into it - not just you but your family, your team, your coach, your physio, your trainer, anyone and everyone that's contributed to your effort in any way, it makes all of that worth it. That is what you're putting yourself out there for and nothing compares to that,” he said.

Glenisla days as golf course could be numbered - up for sale with plannng consent for 215 houses

                       The distinctively designed Glenisla clubhouse
Glenisla golf course, Alyth in Perthshire is up for sale with the likelihood that the 186.5 acres of  land, on which also  stands a clubhouse, farmhouse and cottages, will be bought by a developer.
Planning consent for the building of 215 houses and mixed commercial use is in place for the buyer.
The course was designed by Tony Wardle and  was one of several golf courses built by the Glen Andrews company, which was run by Oldmeldrum man Graeme Webster and business partner Andrew Smith.
"We built the Glenisla course  in the early 1990s and it was opened around 1996," said golf course architect Webster who, as director of Team Niblick,  is currently in Ireland, making changes to the Ballybunion course.
"The original Glenislae owners were the Glenshee Chairlift Company but I am sure the complex h\as been sold on since then."

In 2014, Glenisla Golf Club won an award as the best value for money of Scottish courses with visitor green fees of less than £50.

RENFREWSHIRE GOLFERS POISED FOR CHAMPIONSHIP

RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION PRESS RELEASE

With three of six matches played, the Renfrewshire Golf Union A team is again mounting a serious challenge in the West of Scotland Championship.  Having retained the trophy for the past thirteen years, new captain Andrew Farmer is under pressure to extend that record but, with fourteen holes played in the match against Lanarkshire at Kilmacolm Golf Club, it did not look good with the Renfrewshire side down in five matches and up in only two.
Craig Watson was one down but clawed his way back and a lost ball for his opponent at the last started to turn things round.  Then Lee Jenkins from Elderslie, who was three up after ten and one down after fourteen won his game at the last when Andrew Steven (Easter Moffat) hit his drive out of bounds.  Nails were being bitten as Old Course Ranfurly youngster Stewart Watt – one up after ten and two down after fourteen in his game against Mark O’Donnell from Hamilton - fought back to win three of the last four holes for a narrow victory. David Dickson (Bonnyton) held on to win the final game giving Renfrewshire a solid 5.5 to 2.5 win in an amazing turn of fortunes.
With three matches left to play, Ayrshire top the league with 6 points with Renfrewshire only a point behind and with the Ayrshire match scheduled for October 18 at Bonnyton.  Renfrewshire’s next challenge is against Dunbartonshire at Kirkintilloch on 11 October.

Jacky Montgomery 50th graduate of PGA Director of Golf programme

 PGA NEWS RELEASE
Former PGA in Scotland captain Jacky Montgomery has become the 50th successful graduate of the PGA’s director of golf programme.
The Dunbar Golf Club director of golf picked up his certificate at Harrogate’s Golf Show from Dr Kyle Phillpots, the PGA’s director of education and career development.
It’s another notch in a highly successful career for Montgomery who has also attained PGA Advanced Fellow Professional status and is former chairman of the TGI Golf Partnership.
“I think for me, particularly with the restructuring at Dunbar Golf Club and our potential future developments, it was important to be able to demonstrate that I had the qualification as a PGA director of golf,” said Montgomery who has been at Dunbar since 1999.
Prior to turning pro he enjoyed a successful amateur career, captaining Scotland boys and also representing Great Britain and Ireland and played in the Junior World Cup in America.
He joined the PGA ranks as a 17 year old at Dunblane before moving to Ladybank.
“I had offers to go on golf scholarships in America but I wanted to be in golf and thought the right move was to qualify as a PGA Professional and then take stock – whether it was to go on and be a player or another role in golf.”
Montgomery was PGA qualified by 1986 and less than three months later at the age of just 21 was head pro at Dunfermline Golf Club.
He added: “I was running a business, coaching and looking after a membership. This meant that my own golf had to slip down the priority list.”
He was at Dunfermline for four years and then later at Burntisland Golf Club for nine years  before jumping at the chance to move to Dunbar.
“I was ambitious and the opportunity to move to Dunbar - a quality championship links course founded in 1856 - was an exciting move for me. It has a great membership and we’re fortunate to host events such as Final Open Qualifying and national amateur championships.

“My involvement over many years in Scottish PGA committees and TGI allowed me to develop my professional skills through business and networking whilst hopefully putting something back into the game for my fellow pros.
“I am proud to be recognised as an Advanced Fellow of the PGA and feel very privileged to have worked in the golf industry as a PGA Professional for almost 30 years.”
PGA Master Professional, John Mulgrew, who pioneered the director of golf qualification, added: “Over the last eight or nine years since the qualification has been established it has become more important than ever for PGA pros who want to be involved in the running of their golf club.
“And in that period, golf clubs have been recognising the importance of PGA Professionals and the value of this qualification both at home and abroad.”
