Yorkshire  start with a 9-0 whitewash of Worcestershire

Yorkshire were on sparkling form today, despite downpours on the first day of the England Senior Men’s County Championship, as they pulled off a 9-0 clean sweep against Worcestershire.
In the other – very close - match, BB and O (Berks, Bucks and Oxon) won the last game of the day on the 18th to beat Devon 5-4 at Robin Hood Golf Club, Solihull.
The weather played its part as the day unfolded. The foursomes were dry, but torrential rain delayed play for over an hour at the start of the singles and the teams were soaked throughout the afternoon. However, the sterling efforts of course manager Andy Wood and his team kept the course playable.
BB&O captain Ashley Brewer said: “Robin Hood should be very proud. The course stood up very well and the green staff were magnificent. The whole presentation and the ambience of the competition is fantastic.”
Yorkshire set off as they meant to go on, sweeping ahead in the foursomes and winning all three games.
However, their top pair of England senior international Stephen East and Peter Ward had to work for their point, holding on through a tight finish with a series of pars to finish one up.
By contrast East and Ward both sped off in the afternoon. East played 13 holes in just a couple over par, despite the conditions, and won 6 and 5 to put Yorkshire’s first point on the board.  Ward, who had three birdies in his first six holes, soon followed him in, winning 5 and 4.
There were more big wins for Marshall Newman (6 and 4) and Chris Mear (5 and 4), while Steve Mason (image © Leaderboard Photography) and Ian Clarke both held their nerve to win on the last – with Clarke scoring a winning birdie.
“It was very exciting, very nerve wracking,” said Yorkshire captain John Grimbleby, as he recounted how his team worked to the whitewash.
“You always hope for it, but you don’t think it’s possible. A lot of things have to go for you and they did.” But he added: “It’s only one win.”
Mason, who had been three down at one stage, had an additional reason to celebrate, when his first grandchild was born during the afternoon.  Mason’s son, James, was an England international in the early 2000s.
The match between Devon and BB and O was extremely close all day.  Paul Vicary and Richard Ward put Devon 2-1 ahead after the foursomes when they turned their match around, getting in front for the first time on the 18th where they won one up.
But BB and O came out with great determination in the afternoon, winning two of the first three games to make the scoreline square – with three extremely tight games still to be decided.
Phil Sewell had led over the outward half but was two down with four to play. He won the 15th and 17th to get back to all square and holed a good eight-footer on the last to hang on to the half.
George Wilson secured another half in a nip and tuck game, sending his final chip close to the pin. Then Malcolm Reid sealed the BB and O’s fightback with a one-hole win. He was behind early on after his opponent, Rick Pillow, birdied two of the first three holes, but he turned his match around, securing a lead as he played the final holes.
“We are delighted,” said Brewer. “We are sorry for Devon because they led all the way and it’s really been nicked from them against the run of play.”
Tomorrow BB and O play Worcestershire; Yorkshire play Devon

Justin Rose up there with the big-money earners in States

Record earnings on US PGA Tour:

Six players win $5 million-plus in 2015

It was a record-setting season on the American money front in more ways than one. Yes, Jordan Spieth established an impressive total of $12,030,465 ($1,125,300 higher than the previous best by Vijay Singh in 2004), but it was also the first time in US PGA Tour history that six players cracked the $5 million mark.
Jason Day’s total of $9,403,330 would have led the money list in each of the five previous seasons and it’s the seventh-best output in Tour history. (Spieth holds No. 1, Singh No. 2, and Tiger Woods has the next four best seasons.)
Also cracking $5 million this year were Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, and Justin Rose.
It was just five seasons ago that Matt Kuchar led the money list without surpassing $5 million. He had $4,910,477.

Greig Hutcheon ... PGA play-offs in Turkey coming up.

Hutch in seventh heaven - thanks to late Bob

Torrance - 5min chat put Greig on track

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Greig Hutcheon has finished the 2015 season as the Tartan Tour's leading money-winner with £36,176 from 56 competition.
It's the seventh time in 10 years - 2006-2007-2010-2012-2013-2014-2015- that the 42-year-old who hails from Upper Deeside, Aberdeenshire has headed the table .... and Greig says that, in a way, he owes it all to the late Bob Torrance.
Hutcheon picks up the story:
"My real change in form came about 10 years ago after a 5min discussion with Bob Torrance!
"I was first reserve for the "Johnnie Walker Championship" that year and once all of the morning players teed off I was the only man left on the range.
"Bob Torrance came over and told me what he felt I was doing and what he thought I should do. It was very simple and I hit balls all day until the afternoon players had all gone too.
"Bob's words of wisdom to me came after I fell heavily one winter, an accident which separated my shoulder and severely reduced my power. I was beginning to doubt my ability to compete at the top level.
"But thanks to Bob Torrance, with using more leg action I undoubtedly gained more strike on the ball.
"Having become the father of Murray and Angus has further strengthened my focus and a lot of playing experience has all come together over the last 10 years to produced consistency and good results.
"I obviously dreamed of greater results in my career when I turned pro in 1995 but having such a bad injury in my prime, then making such a poor decision not to take a 12 month medical from the tour really backfired.
"Nevertheless playing around Scotland on the Tartan Tour has been fantastic, great fun and a real reminder that we have a country full of amazing golf courses coastal and inland.
"A huge thank you must go from myself and all the professionals to all the club members and sponsors that put on so many great events throughout the summer months."
Hutcheon is now having "a week break with the family" before preparing to head to Turkey for the PGA play-offs and hopefully gain a spot in the PGA championship field at Wentworth next spring.

Luke Joy

Joy for Luke as he shares second-round

lead on MENA Tour

RIYADH — England’s Luke Joy fired a course-record 64 to join Gabriel Canizares atop the leaderboard heading into the final round of the MENA Golf Tour’s American Express Dirab Golf Championship on Tuesday.

Starting the day, a good four shots behind, Joy rattled off one eagle and seven birdies, including five on the front nine, against a lone bogey to reach nine-under for the tournament along with joint overnight leader Gabriel Canizares of Spain, who carded a second round 70.

England’s Craig Hinton, who shared the opening day’s lead with Canizares, sits alone in second place a further shot adrift as Spain’s Mariano Ochoa and Thriston Arthur Lawrence of South Africa moved into a tie for the fourth at six-under, one shot ahead of England’s talented amateur James Allan.

It was Joy, a two-time winner on the MENA Golf Tour who made the biggest charge of the day, putting himself in pole position for a shot at the title. A change of putter did the trick for the Englishman as he started with a great birdie at the first which kind of set the tone for his almost a flawless round.

“Of all the seven birdies, the one on the first was quite pleasing as I holed a nice putt from 20 feet,” said Joy, who bettered the previous course record of a 66 jointly held by Pakistan Shafiq Masih, Craig Smith of Wales and Ian Keenan of England.

THE PROFESSIONAL GOLFERS’ ASSOCIATION
PRESS RELEASE

EX-SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LEAGUE CHIEF JOINS PGA SPONSORSHIP TEAM

PGA NEWS RELEASE
The PGA has expanded its sponsorship team with the appointment of David Longmuir – the former chief executive of the Scottish Football League (SFL).

Longmuir’s role will include exploring sponsorship and commercial opportunities within The PGA’s seven regions, initially focusing on Scotland and the North of England.
The Scot, pictured right, who headed up the SFL for six years from 2007-13, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role having also worked for Diageo – the world’s biggest spirits company – and the Bank of Scotland.
He was with Diageo for 20 years in a range of sales and marketing, trade and sponsorship roles culminating in his final position as director of Diageo Brand Protection Programme.
Among the Diageo labels he managed were famous names - Bells and Johnnie Walker. With Bells he looked after management of the Scottish Football League Partnership while he also oversaw the Johnnie Walker sponsorship of the Scottish PGA Championship at Gleneagles and Scottish Amateur Championship so he has seen both sides of golf’s professional and amateur game.
“One of my key roles and key focus at the SFL was to bring investment into the game through sponsorship and commercial activities with broadcasters and big name brands,” he said.
“Throughout my career successes have been about sponsorship delivery and creating good quality, long-term sponsorship partnerships.
“I believe golf and whisky are the two most important products that Scotland has – you go to any bar in the world and find there is always a bottle produced in Scotland while golf is important because of the origins of the game and its Scottish Heritage.
”I’m looking forward to the chance to explore commercial and sponsorship opportunities in Scotland and the North of England and over time across all PGA regions.”
Longmuir will report to Robert Maxfield, The PGA’s joint chief operating officer, who added: “David’s appointment demonstrates our commitment to helping The PGA regions to create more commercial opportunities.
“David has a proven background and will be an asset in helping to achieve our goals of creating enhanced sponsorship and commercial opportunities across The PGA.”
