DUBAI — Former Scottish U18 boys match play champion Paul Doherty has moved atop the MENA Golf Tour’s Order of Merit standings after posting a creditable second, highlighted by a course record-equalling 64 in the opening round of the Shaikh Maktoum Dubai Open at Al Badia Golf Club on Wednesday.
The talented 30-year-old Scot, who broke through on the tour with his maiden win at the Royal D’Anfa Open in Morocco earlier this season, has also racked up two top-10s, taking his earnings from the first five events to $16,020, ahead of the English duo of Gary King ($15,899) and Jake Shepherd ($14,445).
Also making inroads into the top five on the Order of Merit was Sweden’s Per Barth, who produced a dramatic charge coming home to win the Shaikh Maktoum Dubai Open, a good two shots ahead of Doherty.
England’s James Allan continues to lead the Order of Merit in the amateur division, accumulating 185 points, well ahead of India’s Rayhan Thomas as Alex Wills made strides on the standings with a top-place finish in the division at Al Badia Golf Club.
The MENA Division for the Shaikh Maktoum Golf Foundation Award that recognises the performance of the top three region’s professionals and amateurs wears a familiar look with experienced professional Faycal Serghini maintaining his position at the top of the tree.
With his compatriots Ahmed Marjan and Amine Joudar putting more heat on Serghini along with Mehdi Sassi, who won the division at Al Badia Golf Club, the order may change when the tour reaches its business end later this month.
The race for the region’s amateur title has also picked up pace with just six points separating the front-runners — Karim El Hali and Ayoub Lguirati — as the MENA Golf Tour travels to Saudi Arabia next week for the American Express Dirab Championship starting on Monday.
Order of Merit standings after the Shaikh Maktoum Dubai Open, the fifth stop on the 2015 MENA Golf Tour schedule:

1.Paul Doherty (Scotland) – US$16,020
2.Gary King (England) - $15,899

Alfred Dunhill Links Championship ends at St Andre

FOOTBALL LEGEND MICHAEL BALLACK WINS TEAM
CHAMPIONSHIP WITH FLORIAN FRITSCH

ST ANDREWS: Football legend Michael Ballack only met his fellow German professional partner Florian Fritsch ten minutes before they teed off together at the start of the 15th Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, but, four days later, they were celebrating after being crowned winners of the Team Championshi
Former Bayern Munich and Chelsea star Ballack, who scored 42 goals in 98 appearances for Germany, said: “We had never met before but Florian helped me out a lot and it has been a tremendous four days.

" I was particularly emotional after our great third round at Kingsbarns and I knew we would be playing in the last group out in the final round.”
Fritsch, a 29-year-old from Munich who turned professional in 2009 and won an additional US$50,000 for taking the Team Championship, said: “It’s amazing. I get to play golf with someone I have watched on television for pretty much all my life, and I get to play with him on my own turf.

" He’s someone I have always looked up to as a footballer and as a great sportsman.”
Ballack and Fritsch came out on top of the team event with an overall score of 40-under-par, following a last round 62 on the Old Course at St Andrews. But it was a close-run thing. The German pair needed to birdie both the last two holes to get past Englishmen Chris Wood and his amateur partner Mark Madden, a former polo professional playing in the event for the first time as a 40th birthday gift from his wife Masa.
Wood, who shot a final round 65, and Madden were the long-time clubhouse leaders with their team score of 39 under par, but they were pipped at the last. Ballack, playing with an 18 handicap, rolled in a par putt on St Andrews’ iconic 18th green for a net birdie – after Fritsch had missed with his own birdie attempt
Ballack added: “It looked good for us for a long time today, and I thought we were leading comfortably but suddenly another team was leading and we had a bogey and double-bogey early on in the back nine.

" So we had to get two birdies in the last two holes, but somehow we did it and it was a great experience. As an amateur, you just enjoy the moment here. It's not about winning, it's just about being part of a great tournament. It was really special.
“Footballers are used to playing in front of 50,000-60,000 people, but this is different. My hands were shaky at times out there, but Florian saved me a few times when I had to pick up my ball and I did get more confident as we went on. "But this is a different kind of pressure to what I am used to in football.”
Television presenter and former cricketer Mark Nicholas qualified for the first time in 14 appearances to play in the final round, as one of the leading 20 teams, and finished tied for fifth with his professional partner, young Swede Joakim Lagergren, after rolling in an eight-foot putt for a net birdie three on the intimidating 17th Road Hole.
Other celebrities featuring in the top 20 teams were rock star Huey Lewis, Irish rugby legend Brian O’Driscoll and 11-times former world surfing champion Kelly Slater, who played with individual tournament winner Thorbjorn Olesen and birdied the 18th to add to the scenes of celebration at the Home of Golf.

Simon P Brown wins French Riviera Masters

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
England's Simon P Brown from Worthing, Sussex claimed his third Senior Tour title in the French Riviera Masters after holding off a final-day surge from his compatriot Barry Lane. Winner Brown with trophy picture above by courtesy of Getty Images(c).
The tournament had been reduced to 54 holes after torrential rain caused the first round to be abandoned, but the sun shone on the final day at Terre Blanche Hotel, Spa and  Golf Resort, and Brown took advantage of the benign conditions with a flawless round of 68 for a ten under par aggregate total.
Earlier in the day, Lane had set the clubhouse target on eight under par courtesy of a superb round of 64 which included four straight birdies and an eagle on the back nine.
But Brown was not to be denied, adding a brace of birdies after the turn to the two he had carded on the front nine to prevail by two strokes from Lane and Paraguay’s Angel Franco, who closed with a round of 69.
Brown said: “My score wasn’t as good as yesterday’s, but I still played really well today.
“I couldn’t see any leaderboards until we came to the 11th hole, then I saw that Barry [Lane] was right up there. I’ve known him for a long time and he’s a very good player, so I just thought that if I could get to ten under I would have a chance, and here I am holding the trophy!
“It’s my third victory since 2013, and I’m really pleased – it always feels great to win. I really like the course, I can see the shots from the tee and the fairways and greens are always in great condition, so I’m already looking forward to coming back and defending my title next year.”
Lane was understandably disappointed to have missed out on his fifth Senior Tour title but was proud of his performance, particularly on the back nine which he covered in a mere 30 strokes.
He said: “Yesterday I didn’t putt very well, but I played really well today and finally holed some putts.
“At the beginning of the round, I was tied 19th but only six shots off the lead, so I knew that if I could get off to a fast start I’d give myself a chance. The back nine was a bit up and down but then my putter caught fire after the turn. I thought I might’ve done enough to force a play-off, but credit to Simon – he held his nerve well and deserved the win.”
Franco got off to a sluggish start, bogeying the second hole for the second day in succession, but he rallied with three birdies on the back nine to share second place with Lane.
“I’m very happy to finish second,” he said.
“I played well over the two rounds, hit lots of greens in regulation but didn’t hole that many putts. I got a bit unlucky on the ninth, where my ball stopped right on the edge of the hole. But I’m still very happy with the week, because it’s my best result of the season.”
Fourth place was shared between England’s Paul Broadhurst and his compatriot Gary Marks, who closed with respective rounds of 67 and 69.

Great Dane Olesen wins Alfred Dunhill Links

title by two shots

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Thorbjørn Olesen held his nerve to win the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and claim his third European Tour title at St Andrews today.

The Dane, pictured left on the Swlken Bridge with the trophy by courtesy of Getty Images(c), came second at this event in 2012 and went one better, posting a one under par 71 to finish the week on 18 under par, two shots clear of American duo Brooks Koepka and Chris Stroud.
Englishman Chris Wood and Austrian Bernd Wiesberger were among the large group one stroke further back on 15 under.
Olesen began his final round with a three-stroke lead over the chasing pack, but followed a birdie from eight feet on the first with a double bogey on the second and a bogey at the next to surrender the outright lead.
The Dane bounced back in style, picking up shots at the fourth and fifth holes to return to the top of the leaderboard.
After safely parring the next nine holes, Olesen extended his advantage to two strokes with a brilliant birdie from 50 feet at the 15th.

He then parred the notorious 17th to set up a victory stroll down the 18th – one of golf’s most iconic holes – before collecting a cheque for €708,171 which moves him up 99 places up The Race to Dubai (from 124th to 25th), into the top 75 in the World Ranking and to the head of the European Ryder Cup Points List
The 25 year old began the back nine with three straight gains before carding his only bogey of the day at the 13th.
Koepka responded immediately, rolling in his 15 foot birdie putt at the 14th before closing out his round with four straight pars to finish on 16 under.
Stroud, meanwhile, opened his round with a bogey at the first before gains at the third, fourth and seventh holes took him to the turn in 34.
The 33 year old continued his charge with successive gains at the tenth and 11th but dropped another shot at the 16th to fall back to 15 under.
Stroud then birdied the final hole at St Andrews to join Koepka in a share of second place.

Key quotes

Thorbjørn Olesen: “It feels unbelievable. It's been a very tough year and standing here with this trophy is unbelievable. To win over these three golf courses and finishing off especially on St. Andrews is a great feeling.

“I got too aggressive on the second hole, hit a great drive down there and felt like I had a good yardage, but was just too aggressive, and as soon as you get too aggressive on a links golf course, you get punished. So I just kept myself together and knew that I have tried it before. So stayed very patient.

“Winning after the year I have makes this more personal, and like I said before, very emotional, walking down the 18th at the Old Course to win a tournament. It's been a very tough season for me, and I would like to give a special thanks to my coach's family and friends, and anyone who has been there. I kept believing. I shot a lot of good rounds actually but I couldn't manage to keep it together. It was nice this week just to play three great rounds of golf the first three and kept it together in this last round.”

Delpodio eases to EMC Challenge Open win

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Matteo Delpodio gave Italy a home winner as he scored a three-stroke victory, leading from wire to wire,  in the EMC Challenge Open at Rome’s Olgiata Golf Club.
The 30 year old, pictured right with the championship trophy,  led the tournament from start to finish, sealing a maiden Challenge Tour win with a level par final round of 71 as he held off a final-day charge from Gary Boyd.
Turin-born Delpodio, cheered on by a large contingent of family and friends, had to complete his third round on the fourth morning after weather delays dogged the first three days, but he said that the hard work was all worthwhile.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” he said. “I’ve been waiting so long for this moment and to have a victory here in Italy, in Rome, is just a dream come true, a fantastic moment.
“It has been a very long day, the toughest day on the golf course I’ve ever had – though it’s now the greatest ever! The course is very demanding and I was not playing as well as yesterday so I really had to focus on every shot and every hole, not worry about any numbers.
“When you are leading by a few shots sometimes it is more difficult than when you are tied for the lead because you have to keep the advantage, and how do you do that? You have to go for it. So I forgot about the numbers and focused on my game.
“It changes the end of the season, and next season, for me now. I was thinking in the last few weeks that I’ve been playing well, so I wouldn’t say I was expecting a good event but I was in a position where I was ready to have a good week, and it’s great that it came here in Rome.
“Walking up 18 was a dream. My mum was here, and it’s the first time she’s followed me at a Challenge Tour event, and I knew I was winning the tournament, so it was one of the best feelings I’ve ever had on the golf course and I will keep that moment forever.”
Delpodio became the first Italian winner on the Challenge Tour since Marco Crespi won the NH Collection Open 18 months ago, and the first home winner of the EMC Challenge Open since Edoardo Molinari’s victory in 2009.
England’s Boyd, on his 29th birthday, finished with four straight birdies for a round of 68 and second place on his own, two shots ahead of Frenchmen Edouard Dubois and Thomas Linard and Sweden’s Sebastian Sӧderberg.
In a group of players one shot further back was Ricardo Gouveia, falling just short in his bid to become the first player to retain a Challenge Tour title since Daniel Vancsik in 2004, but closing the gap to Sebastien Gros at the top of the Road to Oman Rankings with a tied sixth finish.
