Paul O'Hara completes Sandy Pipey Young

Masters hat-trick of victories at Royal Dornoch

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Paul O'Hara completed an impressive hat-trick of victories in the Sandy Pipey Young Masters at Royal Dornoch today.

The Clydeway Golf man, already winner of the Scottish young professionals' title this year and runner-up to Paul McKechnie in last week's Paul Lawrie Invitataional at Deeside, won by seven strokes with an eight-under-par 36-hole total of 132, considerably lower than last year (138) and also in 2013 (136).
His rounds at Dornoch were 63 and 69, the latter being made up of birdies at the sixth, ninth, 12th and 15th, offset by bogeys at the fourth, 11th and 17th in halves of 34 and 35.
The only other round of 69 on the final day was returned by Craig Goodwin (Duff House Royal) who came through to share second place with Greg Paterson (St Andrews Links Golf Academy) on 139.
The first three were the only players in the big field who were under the par of 140 (2x70) for the 36 holes.
Goodwin birdied the first, fourth, fifth and nine in an outward half of 32 but a double bogey 6 at the 11th took much of the steam out of his engine and hecame home in a birdie-less 37.
Paterson had  three second-round birdies but five bogeys cost him a 71, three more than his opening-day score.

college rankings after 14-under-par victory

Scots  Robert MacIntyre (second from right) from Oban and Duncan McNeill (extreme left) from Annan are both in this picture of the winning McNeese State University team.  Thanks tyo Glen Burrett for identifying them for us.

FROM THE McNEESE STATE UNIVERSITY WEBSITE
Coming off a college-record setting win at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate, the McNeese State University  golf team - "The Cowboys" - are ranked No. 2 by GolfWeek in United States men's university golf.
Spearheaded by Scottish amateur champion, the left-handed Robert MacIntyre from Oban, the Cowboys won the Southern Mississippi tourney by 15 strokes after setting a school record, three-round score of 829 (273-276-280) to finish at 23-under par, 15 strokes ahead of runners-up. Louisiana-Lafayette
In addition to the team ranking, secon-year student MacIntyre, who won the Scottish title at Muirfield during the summer, is  No. 1 in the US college nation individual rankings with a 66.41 rating.
MacIntyre placed first on the individual leaderboard at the Sam Hall tourney with a school-record three round score of 199 to finish at 14-under par. He shot rounds of 66, 68 and 65 to win the title by three strokes.

MacIntyre cruise to titles at Sam Hall tourney

  From McNeese State University website
HATTIESBURG – Three years ago, Austin Burk took the course for the very first time as McNeese's head coach at the Sam Hall Invitational and watched his Cowboys finish 15th out of 15 teams in the event.

Fast forward to September 2015 and  Burk, pictured right with Robert MacIntyre, witnessed just how far he has brought the Cowboys as he watched his team complete a dominating performance to win the event by 15 strokes with a 23-under score of 829, led by Scottish second-year student Bob MacIntyre who took the individual title with a 14-under 199 in the three rounds.
"This was a great team win," said Burk. "It's a nice way to start the new college golf year."
MacIntyre capped the day with the event's best round of all golfers with a 6-under 65 to beat out Sam Houston State's Andrew Ertel by three strokes.
"I've very happy for MacIntyre on his individual title," said Burk. "He continues to impress me each week.
MacIntyre appeared to be on cruise control the entire third round. After pars on the first two holes of play, he birdied four of the next seven holes to make the turn at 4-under. He then carded birdies on 12, 15 and 17 to get to 7-under for the day until a bogey on No. 18 brought him back down to 6-under.
Another Scot, 6ft 4in freshman Duncan McNeill from Annan ended the third day with a 3-over 74 and was 3-over for the tournament with a 216
"We will enjoy this one then get back to work," said Burk. "It's early in the year and I plan to change the line-up some for the next one (tournament). The team should feel great about this win but we have to keep working on the small things."
A third Scot on the McNeese State roster is freshman Niall McMullen, also well over 6ft tall, from Lochgelly, Fife.
Louisiana-Lafayette finished second behind the Cowboys on the team leaderboard with an 8-under 844 followed by Louisiana Tech, Mississippi State, and Arkansas-Little Rock tied with UTSA for fifth to round out the top five.
The Cowboys will be back in action Sept. 26-28 at the Jackrabbit Invitational hosted by South Dakota State and played at the Prairie Club Dunes Course in Valentine, Nebraska.

Team stroke-play format on Wednesday

Inter-area championship at Montrose on

ends the Scottish seniors' season

By GORDON THOMSON

The Scottish Seniors' Golfing Society season draws to a conclusion on Wednesday when the  Inter-area team championship, decided on a stroke-play format and sponsored by McCrea Financial Services, takes place at Montrose Links.

Ten areas, each fielding a team of six players, are chasing the title which Stirlingshire won last year at Dunbar.
David Gardner (Broomieknowe) and Ian Brotherston (Dumfries and County), fresh from retaining the Senior Home International crown for Scotland last week, lead the Lothians and South teams respectively but are the only members of the winning international team in action.

Predicting a winner in this form of golf is always difficult but the strongest teams appear to be Stirlingshire, Lothians, North-east and Glasgow, all of whom have won the title before and will fancy their chances.
The best five scores count out of six with the sixth score counting in the event of a tie.

Wizard of Oz - Day's triumphal march to No.1

Jason Day
Jason Day with his BMW Championship trophy.

Jason Day is the world's No.1 player for the first time.
The Queenslander cruised to a six-stroke victory at the BMW Championship in Chicago on Sunday to leapfrog Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth at the top of the rankings, achieving a lifelong dream. It is his fourth win in six tournaments.
Outwardly, it appeared a stress-free for Day, almost anti-climactic considering the gravity of the moment. There was no exclamation point, no holed-out wedge or drained 10m putt.
But after reaching a goal he set for himself as a teenager, Day confessed to a gruelling weekend.
"I felt a lot of pressure over the last two days, especially today knowing I had a six-shot lead," Day said.
"Things can happen, some guys could shoot a low score or I can shoot one, two or three over and all of a sudden I’m not No.1.
"Yesterday and today were the toughest rounds I’ve ever had to play in my entire life, knowing I had the opportunity to get to No.1.
"Stepping up and playing the way I did today was great to really understand what I’ve put into my game to get to where it is today."

"I’ve just been working so hard. And all I’ve wanted to do is win.
"That’s the mentality since the Open Championship (when he narrowly missed joining the playoff for the Claret Jug), something changed in my head.
"I felt like it was my time to start winning tournaments and ever since then it has been a phenomenal run.
"Our main goal was to get to No.1 and we understood that you had to win consistently to get to that No.1 spot.
"To be able to have that opportunity to get to No.1 and win was fantastic."
All the work had been done on the opening two days of the BMW Championship with incredible rounds of 61 and 63, followed by a smooth third-round 69. So Day earned himself a triumphal march through the final round to the world No.1 ranking having started the week at a career-high No.3.
He is just the third of his countryman to reach the landmark. Only Greg Norman and Adam Scott have done it before him among Australians, although Karrie Webb would surely have led the women's rankings early in her great career had they existed at the time.
Day shot 69 with conservative play today. There was no need for heroics in his eyes, when you start with a six-shot lead. He kept hitting greens and two-putting, waiting for someone to challenge him. But the threats never emerged.
At the par-five eighth he took his first birdie after a nice pitch, then he gave back a shot with a three-putt at the ninth, a moment that might have been worse. But each time he showed any sign of wobbling, he steadied.
At the 12th, the Australian made a great par-save after chunking a fairway bunker shot so that he was well short of the green in regulation. He needed to make a putt from 2m to keep his card in order; he did it, comfortably.
American Rickie Fowler made a run, then faltered. Daniel Berger pulled within four on the back nine, but could not sustain it. They all ran out of holes, and at the par-four 16th, Day put the hammer down.
After getting lucky with his pulled tee shot and finding a decent lie, he hit a short iron to the fringe, just 5m left of the cup, and buried the birdie putt, finishing with a fist pump that said he knew he was home now, his lead back to five shots.
A superb up and down for birdie on the last extended the margin back to where it began the day -- a six-shot edge -- over Daniel Berger.
Day wins $US 1.485 million for his win in the third of four playoff tournaments to conclude the US PGA Tour season, and his season earnings have passed $US 9 million.
It is his fourth win in his past six tournaments, a stretch in which he also secured his first-ever major victory, the US PGA Championship.
Day still has the season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta this week, where only the top 30 will play and the FedexCup bonus of $US10 million is on the line.
He will go into that tournament ranked on top of the points list, knowing that a win guarantees him the outrageous bonus pool; even a top-five finish could be enough, depending on what the other top-ranked players do.
As a teenager gave an interview in 'Golf Digest' in which he said he wanted to usurp Tiger Woods, become world No. 1. He was criticised for this at the time, but no one is questioning him right now. Day had a dream, and on Sunday it materialised.

JASON DAY'S SEASON
Won: Canadian Open, US PGA Championship, Barclays Championship, BMW Championship
Prizemoney: $US 9,174,000
Majors: Masters T28, US Open T9, Open Championship T4, US PGA Championship 1.
Fedex Cup ranking: 1
World ranking: 1

+Russell Knox had a double bogey 7 at the last hole in his final round 70 to finish T45 on 280. He finished 34th in the Fedex Cup - the leadin 30 go on to Atlanta.
