Karlberg takes down Kaymer to win in Italy
EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Sweden's Rikard Karlberg won the 72° OPEN D'ITALIA presented by DAMIANI following a play-off with Germany's Martin Kaymer on a dramatic afternoon at Golf Club Milano.
Kaymer had led by three shots on 21 under at one point but a disappointing back nine saw him finish alongside Karlberg, who had crept through the field with a 67, at 19 under.
Both men had parred the 18th all week and they did so again on the first play-off hole but Karlberg made birdie at the second attempt following a terrific approach over the trees to claim his first European Tour title.
Seven players finished in a tie for third with David Lipsky and Lucas Bjerregaard joining Lagergren, Fitzpatrick, Willett, Fahrbring and Zanotti on 18 under.
Romain Wattel was then a shot further back after a disappointing closing 72 with Miguel Angel Jiménez and Roope Kakko alongside Italian amateur Lorenzo Scalise who finished as the top home player, two shots clear of Francesco Molinari
But the day belonged to Swede Karlberg as he secured a career-changing victory which moves him to 47th in The Race to Dubai and secures his playing rights on The European Tour until at least the end of 2017.
Player Quotes
Rikard Karlberg: “I thought I had a good chance this week because I have been playing very well lately but then when we were getting near to the end of the round I didn’t think I had done enough. But then I managed the birdies at 16 and 17 which was good enough to get into the play-off. Then to go on and win against a player as good as Martin Kaymer in sudden-death makes it very special.
“I had a perfect yardage for my second shot in the second play-off hole and I hit a lovely draw in there. Then I kind of new the line from my previous putt and I hit a brilliant putt to make the birdie.
“It feels amazing to get my first win and it has been a pretty crazy year for me. I got married and now my wife is expecting twins in December! So to get my first win on Tour and to give myself such a huge boost in my career is pretty special.”
Martin Kaymer: “It was a disappointing finish to be honest. We made too many mistakes on the back nine. There were two or three tactical and clubbing mistakes. That happens sometimes but it shouldn’t have happened in that situation today because you need all the help you can get. We should have been more focused. I played well all week but not on the back nine today and that has cost me the tournament today.
“You have to say well done to Rikard. He made a great birdie to win after I had my chance in the first play-off hole. I had a good yardage to the flag but I didn’t really release the club and give myself a good chance for birdie. But I don’t want to take anything away from his win – he played a great final round then made a birdie to win the play-off so he deserved it today.”

SCOTTISH JUNIOR GOLF TOUR
Connor McKinney stars with a 66 at Dalmahoy
By WALTER BURNS
Here
are the results from the Scottish Junior Golf Tour event at Dalmahoy
yesterday on the West course. Nice weather and excellent greens helped
the juniors with some great scoring. Scottish Open U14 Champion, Connor
McKinney, continued his great form with two under par 66. This is the
lowest round ever on the West course in nine seasons in an SJGT event.
Ewan Wheat won the U14 section with 70 and Aamar Saleem won the U12
section with 76. Connor, Ewan and Aamar first played together as a group
at Dalmahoy four years ago.
Thanks to our resident pro Scott Dixon for setting up some fantastic skill challenges.

Jason Day struggles on Saturday but leads BMW Championship by six
FROM SKYSPORTS.COM
Jason Day found scoring much
more difficult in the third round of the BMW Championship but still
extended his lead to six shots with 18 holes left.
The US PGA champion started the Conway Farms, Illinois event with rounds
of 61 and 63, but a series of sloppy mistakes in windier conditions
meant Saturday's round was a less impressive two under 69 for a 20-under-par tally of 193.Day continued to make birdies - six in total on the day - but unlike the first two rounds saw errors creep into his game with bogeys coming at the sixth and ninth in his outward 34.
The Australian birdied the 12th and 14th, and gave strokes back straight away at 13 and 15, but he made a long putt on the 18th for the second successive day, this time for a birdie, to add a further stroke to his lead.
Day's nearest challengers are Americans Scott Piercy and Daniel Berger, with Barbasol Championship winner Piercy enjoying the better third round.
Piercy was one over for the day after back-to-back bogeys at the fifth and sixth, but he made five birdies over the remainder of his round and goes into the final 18 on 14 under.
Berger was also forced to rally, making a double bogey six at the 10th to drop way out of contention, but he made birdies at the 14th, 15th and 16th and was inches away from another at the last.
Fourth place is held by current world No 1 Rory McIlroy, who again admitted to being a little frustrated by his round of 67.
McIlroy missed a series of makeable putts over the first two days and that pattern continued on Saturday despite still making five birdies.
The Northern Irishman, who is being challenged by Day and Jordan Spieth for top spot in the world, missed a short putt to drop a shot at the 16th but battled back to birdie the last two holes and finish on 13 under.
One of the biggest moves of the day came from Rickie Fowler, who put himself in contention for a Sunday flourish with a five under 66, tied with Daniel Summerhays for the best score of the day.
Fowler had six birdies, with just one dropped shot coming at the 12th, but even that leaves him eight shots adrift of Day, who is looking for a fourth tournament win in his last six outings.
It was a day to forget for Spieth, who would have hoped to make ground on Day, and stay in touch with McIlroy, but could only stumble round in one over 72.
Spieth dropped shots at the second and ninth in his outward half of 36 and he could only make it home in level par 35, with two more bogeys blotting his card to go with a pair of birdies. The Masters and US Open champion is 10 shots behind Day.
Russell Knox had a third-round 68 but his running tally of 210 still leaves him well down the field, such is the high standard of scoring
