ENGLAND GOLF NEWS RELEASE

It’s ninth time lucky for Cumbria’s Will Bowe

Cumbria’s Will Bowe made it ninth time lucky today when he won the English Men’s County Champion of Champions title, scoring five-under par over 36 holes at Woodhall Spa Golf Club.
“Finally!” he said, after holing a knee-knocking three footer for par on the 18th on the Hotchkin course to win by a shot with scores of 70 71.
The 32-year-old has just won his county championship for the ninth time and has played in the Champion of Champions event on every occasion – but has had to wait till now for his first win.
“I am very proud to win it, over the moon,” said Bowe (image © Leaderboard Photography), who is the second Cumbrian to take the title. He follows the 1977 champion Mike Walls who, like Bowe, represented Workington.
Bowe’s win broke a logjam at the top of the leaderboard, which at one point in the closing stages of the tournament, saw four players tied at the top. He made his crucial move when he birdied 16 and 17, but then had a long wait on the 18th tee.
“My knees were knocking then!” he laughed. “Everything goes through your mind and I’d just had two birdies and I wanted to get going.”
Bowe knew it was close over the closing holes but just followed his game plan to “keep plodding along and give myself chances. I didn’t know if I had done enough but I knew five-under would be round about the mark.”
Behind him, Lancashire’s Ian Kenwright (Haydock Park) won the tussle for second place, beating Cambridgeshire’s James Reeson (Brampton Park) on countback after they finished on four-under.
Cornwall’s Conor Wilson (Perranporth) was fourth on three-under, while Norfolk’s Simon Clark (Gt Yarmouth & Caister) was fifth on two under, having led the field after 27 holes.
Kenwright, who will represent Lancashire at men’s County Finals, enjoyed getting in the mix: “Win or lose it’s been a good weekend,” he said. He birdied the 17th to keep his challenge alive, while Reeson, who was making his second appearance in the event, staked his claim with a great up and down for birdie from a greenside bunker on the 18th.
Wilson was among those who made long journeys to take part in the tournament but he decreed it well “worth the travel up from Cornwall. I did play well, nothing spectacular but I kept it on the planet! I come from a hilltop links and anything with trees isn’t usually my forte.”

There's no doubting Thomas - Pieters wins

again at KLM Open

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS

Belgium’s Thomas Pieters made it two victories in three weeks at the KLM Open, edging out Lee Slattery in a tense final round and denying the Englishman a double of his own.
Pieters, who won the Czech Masters a fortnight ago, was safely in the clubhouse on 19 under par at Kennemer Golf and Country Club courtesy of a five under par 65 in the final round, leaving Slattery, who claimed last week’s M2M Russian Open, needing to par the last to force a play-off.
Having found thick rough with his drive, Slattery had a putt from three feet to save par, but he missed, handing Pieters his second European Tour title and the €300,000 first prize.
Spaniard Eduardo De La took a share of second place thanks to a seven under par 63, while overnight co-leader Rafa Cabrera-Bello, also from Spain, signed off with a 71 to slip down to tied seventh.

Paul Lawrie tied for 10th place with a repeat of his second-round, one-over-par 71 for 14-under-par 266, built on his first-round 61 and his third-round 63.  He earned 34,560 euros

Quotes
Thomas Pieters
“I’m really, really happy. I felt like I played better in the Czech Republic, but my short game was great this week and saved me many times. I rolled in a couple of good ones early in the round and made a really good par save on the ninth which kept the round going. I had chances coming in and I felt like I needed to make a couple more. I feel bad for Lee as he played great.
“It wasn’t comfortable watching him play the last couple of holes. I was wishing I’d made one more birdie. I’m really happy overall with the week and how I played and it’s nice going forward from here. It’s special winning here, just down the road from home. It was great hearing all the Dutch fans cheering my name and getting behind me, so thanks to them. Our two countries kind of stick together. I’m really happy that my family was here again, too.”
Lee Slattery
“I went into today with a great chance of winning, and I feel like I’ve done everything right really apart from pull that last putt a little bit left. I played some great golf again and it’s given me a lot of confidence. To play at the level I have done this week, with a lot of top players in the field, and nearly get the job done is really pleasing. To leave myself 75 feet to two-putt for a play-off is asking a lot – it was a lot of pressure. I didn’t hit a great putt on that second one, I’ve got to be honest, but it was probably the first time this week I’ve felt under pressure. Well done to Thomas, he’s a great player.
“I’ve got a great feeling inside and I’ll be comforted by my family at home – we’ve got a big celebration next week for the win in Russia. A lot of great things have happened these last two weeks and I’ve just got to enjoy it.”

GREAT BRITAIN and IRELAND WIN 2015

WALKER CUP MATCH 16½-9½

Cup heroes.
USGA NEWS RELEASE
Great Britain and Ireland defeated the United States of America, 16½-9½, today in the 45th Walker Cup Match at Royal Lytham and St. Annes Golf Club, Lancashire.
“I’m delighted with the victory,” said GBI captain Nigel Edwards. “We had a very strong front and we had strength throughout the team. I said last night to the team that as long as the lads keep doing what they have been doing all week, playing their own games, their short games are fantastic, which is probably what has given us the edge.
"Some of the bunker shots have been exceptional but also the standard of play here has been fantastic.”
Edwards, captain in 2011, 2013 and 2015, has two Walker Cup Match victories to his credit (Royal Aberdeen in 2011 was the other) in addition to his play on two Match-winning teams in four appearances.
England’s Jimmy Mullen, who paced GBI with a perfect 4-0 mark, led the team’s afternoon domination of singles matches in which they won five, halved three and lost just two.
England’s Ashley Chesters, 26, the oldest GBI player (3½) and Cormac Sharvin of Ireland (3) were the other home point leaders.
It doesn’t matter if I won all of my games as long as the team won was the main thing,” said Mullen, who made the cut at the 2013 Open Championship at Muirfield and the Round of 16 at the 2014 U.S. Amateur at Atlanta Athletic Club.
“To win all of my games was just the icing on the cake.”
Paul Casey and Luke Donald are among the small group of GBI players who have posted 4-0 records in a single Walker Cup Match.
College All-Americans Bryson DeChambeau, of Clovis, California, the 2015 U.S. Amateur and NCAA Division I men’s individual champion, and Beau Hossler, of Mission Viejo, California, were the only USA players to score victories in the Sunday singles matches.
Hossler (3), DeChambeau (2½) and Robby Shelton (2), of Wilmer, Alabama, were the top point-scorers for the USA.
I don’t think we handed them anything. I think they went out and played well, very well, and they won it,” said USA captain John “Spider” Miller.
“I’d feel bad if we were three-putting and giving them holes. I think our guys played well. They just played very well. They outplayed us and earned it.”
In the morning foursomes, GBI extended its overnight lead from 7-5 to 10-6 by winning three of the four matches for the second consecutive day.
GBI has now won five of the last six Matches contested on its ‘home’ soil, dating back to 1999. The only U.S. win in that stretch was 2007 at Royal County Down in Northern Ireland. With the GBI victory, the two teams have now split the 14 Matches since 1989, 7-7. Before 1987, the USA dominated the series with 28-2-1 mark.
Today's winning margin is the largest for GBI since the Walker Cup began in 1922.
The USA leads the overall series 35-9-1.
The 2017 Walker Cup Match will be played Sept. 9-10 at Los Angeles (Calif.) Country Club.

Front row. L-R  Sam Locke, Ross Gray, Martin Gordon, Jack Harling, Roy Black, Lindsay Smart

Banchory have won the Aberdeen and District Pennant League championship for the first time - only five years after entering the tournament for the first time.
They beat title-holders Murcar Links by 3.5 to 1.5 at  Hazlehead's Mackenzie Championship Course today.
The outcome was still in doubt with Banchory leading 2-1 with two matches in the double better-ball foursomes format still to finish.
Both the fourth and fifth ties went to the 18th green. David Brown and Colin Lindsay added a half-point to the Banchory total with a square match against Jim Henderson and Ken Gunnyeon.
Then Jack Harling and Lindsay Smart clinched an overall Banchory triumph with a one-hole win over Gregor Stewart and Alan Holbrook.
The capture of the Aberdeen Pennant League title compensated Banchory to some degree for their defeat earlier in the season in the final of another double foursomes tournament, the Maitland Shield. Banchory also beat Murcar Links in that event, in the first round but lost in the final to Newmachar.
Both the Maitland Shield and the Aberdeen and District Pennant League are sponsored by the Douglas Hotel's Molly's Bistro.

George Murray earns 24,750 euros for third place four-way tie

Winner Gros gains promotion to European Tour
EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Sebastien Gros claimed the biggest victory of his career as he won the Kazakhstan Open by one shot at Nurtau GC to jump to the top of the Road to Oman Rankings and guarantee himself a place on The European Tour next season
The Frenchman looked to be running away with it, opening up a three-shot lead with eight holes to play, but Denmark’s Mads Søgaard, playing alongside Gros in the final pairing, fought back to tie the lead with five holes to play.
Nerves affected both players as they each made two bogeys down the final stretch to stand level coming down the 18th, but Gros made par to take his second victory of the season following his win at the Najeti Open Presented by Neuflize OBC.
“I started the round so well,” he said. “Through nine holes I was in a great rhythm but then we were told we were playing too slowly and when we sped up I started making a few mistakes.
“I was struggling a bit as the greens were getting slower with the rain but thankfully I’d done a great job before and that was enough.
“I’m sorry for Mads because he played really well and never gave up, and he only had a short one to get into a play-off, but I’m so happy to have won.
“We were sure the birdie putt was going to drop, my caddie and I. It looked good the whole way. It would have been nice to win it like that but it doesn’t matter, I now have the trophy and that’s what’s important.
“I’m now on The European Tour and that’s good enough for me, even if I am now top of the Rankings. I was thinking €80,000 would get me there and I’m now way over that so I can start planning for next year.
“I’m very happy to be number one though. Ricardo Gouveia has had such a great season, so that’s awesome and we’re great friends – I’m sure our battle for number one will be great until the very end this year.
“I don’t have any plans in terms of my schedule, other than to celebrate this win, probably with a little more than just a beer!”
A memorable week in Kazakhstan, where two players made a hole-in-one on Friday, each winning an Audi in the process, drew to a suitably dramatic conclusion as Gros and Søgaard battled it out on the back nine for the largest prizefund of the Challenge Tour season, with €450,000 in total and €72,000 for the winner.
Behind the leaders there was a four-way tie for third place between Sweden’s Jens Fahrbring, American Daniel Im, Scotland’s George Murray and Englishman Callum Shinkwin. Each earned 24,750 euros
Overnight co-leader with Gros and Søgaard, American Sihwan Kim, shot a two over par round of 74 but still finished in a tie for eighth place on nine under par overall.
