Paul Lawrie slips from 61 to 71 but makes the

cut alongwith Tom Watson

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Englishman Matthew Fitzpatrick came within inches of an elusive 59 in the second round of the KLM Open as the tournament’s low scoring continued.
A day after Paul Lawrie and Wade Ormsby both shot nine under par 61, 21 year old Fitzpatrick went one better, narrowly missing out on breaking 60 when his birdie putt on the last came up just short. It was good enough to reach nine under, however, three shots behind leader Søren Kjeldsen of Denmark.
Kjeldsen matched his opening 64 – this time without any dropped shots – to lead by one stroke at 12 under par from England’s David Horsey and Australian Ormsby, with another Englishman, James Morrison, and Dane Morten Ørum Madsen on ten under.
American legend Tom Watson signed for a two under par 68 to make the cut – the second oldest player in European Tour history to do so – while Martin Kaymer, the highest ranked player in the field, had a second 67 to reach six under overall, good enough for a share of 19th place.

Quotes

Søren Kjeldsen
“It feels sweet. It was really good yesterday, and you guys always talk about how it’s hard to follow a good round with another one, and I suppose the statistics show that it is. I didn’t really have a number in mind or anything. You have to enjoy the days when things are going well. As you know, in golf we get all sorts, but today was another great day and I’m very happy with the way I played.
“I’ve played with Matt (Fitzpatrick) before and he loves this kind of golf course as well, so I’m not surprised to see him do so well today. You have to shape shots and every tee you stand on it looks so inviting. It’s nice to have that feeling, where every hole you can’t wait to play it.”

Wade Ormsby
“It was a little bit of a battle out there, but I held it together quite well. It’s always going to be hard following up a 61, so overall I’m pretty happy with two under today. It got a little bit boring there with ten successive pars but I was holding on and wanted to make a birdie before a bogey, which I did. My ball striking could be a bit better so I’ll go and do a bit of work on that this afternoon and get in shape for the weekend.
“There’s no question I’ve struggled the last three or four months, but I’ve just had five weeks off and worked pretty hard trying to address the problems. It feels like I’ve come back a different player.”

David Horsey
“I putted well again and holed a couple of nice ones. It all feeds from the putting. That takes the pressure of the short game, which in turn helps your iron play and your driving, so when you’re holing putts you can always see a score no matter where you hit it. If you’re not, everything is more of a chore. The blade’s working nicely and hopefully will continue to do so. Matching line and pace is a big deal on the greens and I’ve not quite been doing that. It’s starting to come together now though and the hard work is paying off.”

Matthew Fitzpatrick
I was just trying to get the read right on that putt on the last there – in fact I was thinking so much about the line I forgot about the pace of it, and it was a bit disappointing to leave it short. I knew what I had to do on that hole, and hit two good shots in, but I was a bit unlucky that the approach span back down the slope. But it’s been a great day and I can’t have any complaints about a 60. I feel like I’m ready to win. I’m getting closer and playing well. Hopefully it’s only a matter of time.

Tom Watson
“I’m so pleased to have made it to the weekend and get two more cracks at this great course. I had to stay very patient today, and fortunately I was able to roll in a couple of birdies near the end. It’s tough to keep up with these young players - they hit it so far. But I've learned a thing or two about links golf over the years and was able to use that to my advantage today. Tonight I’m having dinner in Amsterdam, which I’m looking forward to very much.”

Great Danes win cars with aces

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
American Sihwan Kim took the halfway lead of the Kazakhstan Open on a day dominated by the two holes-in-one – and two cars won – by Denmark’s Jeppe Pape Huldahl and Dutchman Maarten Lefaber.
All five of the par threes at Nurtau GC had a new Audi on offer for an ace by promoters from the start of the week and a remarkable morning saw Huldahl hole on the first hole – his tenth – from 148 metres with a wedge, winning an Audi A4 and a Perrelet watch valued at $101,000.
Within half an hour Lefaber had holed his seven iron tee shot on the 169-metre 16th hole to win a brand new Audi A6.
“I didn’t really believe it when it went in,” said 33 year old Huldahl. “I’ve made two holes-in-one before but never in a Challenge Tour event, this was the first.
“It’s the best feeling, I was a bit dizzy afterwards and didn’t really know what to do! It’s just a great bonus – you don’t stand on the tee thinking about winning the car. I don’t know how many times I’ve played par threes and not won the car that’s on offer, so it’s never in your mind.
“I just love it here in Kazakhstan. I got the course record a couple of years ago, now this – I wish I could play here every week.”
Forty year old Lafeber said: “I’d just made two stupid bogeys in a row and I was disappointed, so I thought I’d just hit a seven iron, and I actually looked at the car one more time before I hit it and thought ‘why not?’ It was just one of those moments.
“It went straight at it, never left the pin, just hopped once, checked and dropped. I actually drive an A6 at home and was looking for a new car right now, so this is perfect timing for me to get a new one.”
Kim followed up an opening round of 64 with a fine three under par 69 to lead by two shots, helped by holing for an eagle two on the third hole, his 12th, with a wedge from 129 yards.
“It was much tougher today than yesterday,” said the 26 year old. “The course was a lot firmer under the sun in the afternoon, the greens were hard and they tucked the pins away quite a bit so it was more of a test.
“On the third I knew if I swung out of my shoes with my sand wedge out of the rough it was going to barely get there, and it carried the bunker by a yard and I guess it then just trickled in.
“My game seems alright but it suits this golf course because you don’t have to take driver so much because it’s so firm. I can just hit three woods and hybrids and then rely on good distance control.
“I need to stay in the same zone. It’s not a golf course where you can aim to shoot really low, so I just need to stay calm, not get frustrated and stay patient.”
France’s Sebastien Gros and South African Shaun Norris lead the chasing pack, both firing fine rounds of 67 to sit on nine under par.
First round leader Joachim B Hansen endured a difficult round the day after equalling the course record with an opening 63, shooting 73 to fall back to three shots behind the leader alongside Danish compatriot Mads Søgaard.

Road to Oman Rankings leader Ricardo Gouveia bounced back from a disappointing opening round of 74 to move up to three under par for the week and well in contention as so often this season.

The halfway cut was made at level par 144, with 66 players making it through to the weekend.

Duke's Course

The second day of the 5th University of Stirling International event at a breezy and cool Duke's Course, St Andrews saw the field tested and stretched on a fast running and fair test.

In the men's event, overnight leader Craig Chalmers (Stirling; Cawder) struggled in the wind on the back nine to post an 80 (+9) to be overtaken by Marco Iten (Stirling; Switzerland) and Craig Ross (SGU Select) - who both shot impressive par rounds at the height of the wind; Kyle McCarron (Maynooth) - who matched his opening day 72; Calum Fyfe (SGU Select) and Mathias Eggenberger (Stirling; Switzerland) - both of whom shot three over par 74s in the afternoon conditions. Round of the day came from James Wilson (Stirling; Balmore) whose 2 under par 69 was unrivalled through the day. In the Men's Team event, defending champions SGU Select lead hosts Stirling I by four shots going into the final round.

In the Ladies event, it also was a tricky day for overnight leader Gemma Batty (Stirling; Powfoot). As with Chalmers, Batty's round of 80 (+7) saw her move backwards through the field to be passed by Nastja Banovec (Abertay Dundee; Slovenia) and Sinead Sexton (Stirling; Lahinch). In the Ladies Team event, Stirling lead local St Andrews University by nineteen shots.

The event concludes with 18 holes today (Friday)
