South-east District Championship scores and Sunday tee times

Godsman and Clark share Turnhouse lead at

halfway on four-under-par 134

North-east District Open champion Kyle Godsman (Moray), pictured above, is to the fore again in this weekend's SGU 72-hole Order of Merit tournament - the last counting event - the South-east District Championship at Turnhouse Golf Club, Edinburgh.
The 24-year-old from Hopeman, with rounds of 68 and  66, is sharing the lead on four-under-par 134 with experienced campaigner Matt Clark (Kilmacolm) who had a pair of 67s.
134 (-4)
Godsman, who played the US college circuit for four years as a student at the University of South Carolina-Aiken, birdied the fourth, 13th and 16th in morning when he also had bogeys at the fifth and 14th
In afternoon, Kyle birdied the first, fourth, 15th and 16th and bogeyed the third
Clark's first-round 67 contained birdies at the second, third and 16th. He dropped a shot at the 13th. His afternoon 67
saw him birdie the fifth, eighth, 13th and 18th with a couple of bogeys before the turn, at the second and seventh.
Cawder's Jamie Savage had a five-under-par 64 - one outside the course record - in the morning but then had a 74 in the afternoon.
In the morning he had an eagle at the second and birdied the first, fourth, fifth, 11th, 14th and 18th with bogeys at the third, seventh, and 10th.
In the afternoon, Savage had a double-bogey 7 at the fourth as well as bogeys at the eighth, 11th and 12th

Cameron Marr leads at Dumfries and Galloway with a five-under-par 65

Cameron Marr (Musselburgh) has done well in young professionals' events this season but he is on the trail of a first win on the Tartan Tour at the halfway stage of the £14,420 Kerr Investments 36-hole OOM pro-am at Dumfries and Galloway Golf Club.
Marr leads the field of 50 professionals with a five-under-par round of 65 which included birdies at the second, 10th, 14th, 16th, 17th and 18th in halves of 35 (one under par) and 30 (four under).
His only bogey came at the short 13th.
On his tail are the Clydeway Golf pair of Paul O'Hara and Graham Fox who did not have a bogey between them in returning 66s, O'Hara with halves of 33 and Fox with 35-31.
First prize is £2,300 so a tense finish is in prospect, espccially if Marr can keep his nerve.
Last year's winner, Keir McNicoll (Gullane) is tied 27th with a one-over 71
In the two-round pro-am team section, Greg Paston (Ralson), heading the Dumfries and Galloway No 4 team, and Jonathan Lomas (Caprington), piloting the RJM Financial Management trio of amateurs, are both on the 16-under-par 124 mark.

Scottish Seniors Open

Debut delight for Broadhurst as he beats Manson in play-off at Archerfield
EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Former Ryder Cup player Paul Broadhurst defeated Gordon Manson on the second hole of a play-off in the Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Senior Open to join an exclusive club of players who have won on their European Senior Tour debut.
The Englishman, who only celebrated his 50th birthday 15 days ago, becomes just the tenth player to win first time out on the European Senior Tour and he had to do it the hard way by holing a curling downhill 25-foot putt to get into a play-off at Archerfield Links Golf Club, East Lothian.

He then needed two more birdies to beat a dogged opponent who earlier in the year had won his own maiden Senior Tour title at the Swiss Seniors Open at Bad Ragaz.
Broadhurst had briefly held a four shot lead over the field after reaching seven under par after 12 holes of his second round but by the time he had posted a 68 he had been caught by Mason and he needed to come out the next day and card a flawless 68 to claim the €53,778 first prize.
“I’m speechless,” he said after ending Manson’s hopes of becoming the first Scottish-born winner of the title since Sam Torrance back in 2006.

“Yesterday when I finished the way I did I let 15 guys back in to the tournament. I didn’t sleep too much last night but today I played pretty solid.
“I have to admit I’m a bit surprised because I’ve got a dreadful play-off record. I mean it’s dreadful. Absolutely dire. I was two from 12 before today and none from four on the European Tour, so I suppose you could say I was due one.
“This means a lot to me. It’s been nine years since I won a tournament as big as this so I’m a bit emotional at the moment. I want to dedicate it to Dave Baxter, a real big pal of mine who died earlier this year. He travelled around the world with me so it’s a shame he isn’t around to see this today.
“I’m also chuffed to bits for my friends back home,” he added.
“I must have had about 50 people tell me they were going to back me in my first event. I told them not to be daft because playing the Senior Tour is a lot different to playing in the Midland region, but at least I didn’t let them down.
“The family are going to be pleased too. I said the other day my bank balance had taken a bit of a battering over the last three or four years but this nice cheque should see me through to Christmas.”

Manson, born in Fife but a resident in Austria for many years as their national coach, was in a sanguine mood after settling for second place behind the former Ryder Cup player. He had also carded a flawless 68 to finish tied with Broadhurst on seven under par 209 but saw his hopes of a second win of the season dashed after his 15-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole horse-shoe out of the hole.
“That was a great putt Paul hit on the last hole to get into the play-off and he followed that with two more birdies in extra time so I can’t be too hard on myself.
“I was relaxed all day and feeling strong but in the end Paul did a little better than me and all credit to him for that.
“The putt at the last ran right round the hole. That’s 360 degrees when I was a school but this is another good finish in what has been a great season for me. I’ve had a first and two seconds so I’m absolutely delighted. I know I can do it now and I can move on to next week’s Travis Perkins Masters with a lot of confidence.”
Further down the leaderboard, Welshman Mark Mouland also closed with a 68 to finish third on four under par 212 while China’s Lianwei Zhang claimed his best finish of his rookie season on the European Senior Tour after carding a best-of –the-week five under par 67 to finish tied third alongside Cesar Monasterio and Tim Thelen on three under par.
Carl Mason, the most successful champion in Senior Tour history, was next best placed after closing with his second 71 of the week to finish in seventh place on two under par 214 while former champion, Bill Longmuir, was the best-placed Scot in a share of eighth place alongside Barry Lane and Pedro Linhart.

Exciting finish to boys' international matfch for Jacques Leglise Trophy

Scots play part as GB and I fight back to draw
with Continent of Europe at Royal Dornoch

Scots Calum Fyfe (Cawder) and Nairn's Sandy Scott played their part as Great Britain and Ireland fought back to gain a honourable draw - 12.5 to 12.5- with the Continent of Europe in the boys' golf international two-day match at Royal Dornoch Golf Club today (Saturday).
As holders of the trophy, GB and I retain it with a draw and will defend it next at Prince's Golf Club, Kent next August.
GB and I led by a point at the end of the first day but were hammered 0.5-3.5 in the foursomes. Scott and Fyfe, two down on the inward half, fought back to halve their match after the first three foursomes were won by the Contientals.
That meant the tables had been well and truly turned with GB and I going into the final session of singles trailing 7-9
But Peter McEvoy's team rolled up their sleeves and produced a stirring fightback which, at one stage, looked as if it would carry them to victory.
Fyfe won his singles tie by 3 and 2 but Scott, playing in the fnal match lost on the 18th green by one hole to Viktor Hovland (iNorway). Sandy had been two down with four to play but rallied to be all square on the 18th tee.
In the end it was a fair result between two evently matched teams
GB and I took the first-day honours 6.5 to 5.5 while the Continent "won" the second-day count by 7 to 6, thanks to the morning landslide in their favour today.

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE R and A

GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND RETAIN JACQUES LEGLISE TROPHY
There was drama to the end as defending champions Great Britain and Ireland (GB and I) overcame a two-point deficit to level the overall score at 12½ -12½  against the Continent of Europe and retain the Jacques Leglise Trophy at Royal Dornoch today.
Peter McEvoy’s GB and I side held a narrow one-point lead at the start of the day but the outcome looked far from assured after the Continent of Europe turned the match on its head by winning the morning foursomes 3.5-0.5 to open up a 9-7 lead going into the singles.
On a windy afternoon by the Dornoch Firth there was no telling how the matches would finish as the advantage swung one way then the other. The outcome was eventually decided by the final shot on the final green of the final match.
For most of the afternoon Scotland’s Sandy Scott trailed Norway’s Viktor Hovland in the anchor match. Buoyed by large local support, the Nairn golfer rallied from two down with four to play to get back to all-square playing the 18th.
A halved match would have been enough for GB and I to win the contest outright but Hovland had other ideas.
He fired his 200-yard approach over the flag to 15 feet and two-putted for par, while Scott, the Scottish Boys Open Stroke Play Champion, missed the green right and was unable to get up and down for par and lost by one hole.
It meant the matches were tied for the first time since 1978 when the contest was played over one day instead of two.
Miguel Franco de Sousa’s Continent of Europe side enjoyed a purple patch as three matches in the top order all trailed playing the 18th but all gained halved matches.
The run began with Iceland’s Gisli Sveinbergsson, who was two down with two to play before he halved with England’s Marco Penge in the top match, while Denmark’s John Axelsen won the 18th to halve with Ireland’s Thomas Mulligan.
In the fourth tie Germany’s Maximilian Schmitt was so far right with his approach to the 18th he found the adjacent first fairway but managed to get up and down for par to also earn a half point against England’s William Enefer.
Ben Chamberlain (2&1), Calum Fyfe (3&2) and Tim Harry (6&4) all won their singles matches for GB&I, which fittingly left playing captain Bradley Moore to secure the all-important point to retain the trophy.
This year’s Carris Trophy champion had a close match against Denmark’s Christoffer Bring but finished strongly and closed out the match 3&1 to allow the GB&I team celebrations to begin.
In the morning foursomes the Continent of Europe stormed out of the blocks and threatened a clean sweep but the Scottish pairing of Scott and Fyfe showed great tenacity to come from two down with six to play to eventually halve the bottom tie with Hovland and Reitan. There was greater clarity in the three matches ahead as Franco de Sousa’s side were convincing winners.
Penge and Mulligan lost 5 and 4 for the second time in the top match against Sweden’s Tim Widing and Sveinbergsson. Harry and his Welsh compatriot Chamberlain lost 6 and 4 to Italy’s Guido Migliozzi and Adrien Pendaries from France.
The English pair of Moore and Enefer trailed throughout their match before losing 4 and 3 against Bring and Axelsen, who along with Hovland was undefeated for the week.
Key quotes
Peter McEvoy, Great Britain and Ireland Team Manager, said:
“We’ve retained the trophy but we wanted to win, we should have won. We played the 18th five times today and we lost the 18th five times. I think we should have won the match comfortably.
“I thought the lads showed tremendous spirit and great golf all afternoon, apart from not quite finishing the job off on the 18th.
“I’m proud of the team, it was a great effort but I think we will still go away feeling the job wasn’t quite done. I know we retained the trophy but we wanted to win the match.”
Miguel Franco de Sousa, the Continent of Europe Team Manager, said:
“It was very tight, it could have gone either way and you have to congratulate the GB&I team, they played really good golf in the afternoon, a very good fight back.
“They should be very proud of themselves and I am very proud of my team. It’s a draw but we are not taking the trophy home.
“The 18th was a good hole for us, especially in the singles because we managed to get three halved matches when we were down in them all - that kept the momentum going and there was still hope of winning."

The 2016 Jacques Leglise Trophy will be played at Prince’s in England on 26 and 27 August.

Laskey wins four-round EuroPro Tour event

NEWS RELEASE BY NICK TEALE
Mark Laskey won the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour’s first 72-hole event - the Clipper Logistics Players Championship at Moor Allerton Golf Club - by two- strokes from Steve Uzzell.

Welshman Laskey carded a final-round 68, three under par, for the eight-under win, his second on the EuroPro Tour, having won at Rowallan Castle in 2013.

The victory sees him move to seventh on the Race To Desert Springs and is a welcome boost for the Brocket Hall-based player, who recently returned from a three-week absence forced upon him by appendix surgery.

“It feels great to get back in the winners’ circle, especially towards the end of the season when they really count,” said Laskey, who collects £12,000 for his victory as well as a brand new Motocaddy trolley, Bushnell Tour X range finder and £500 to spend with HotelPlanner.com.

“If I can put in a big finish to the year then my job for the season will have been achieved. I am perfectly poised now with two events left and the Tour Championship will be big money, so hopefully I can have a big week there.

“I will play each week as it comes and the more you can stay in the moment the better you are going to do. If I can keep doing that then success will come as a by-product of that.

“The appendix surgery was tough and it has certainly knocked me down the Order of Merit missing three weeks of the season. The win today has put me back up there. It gives a different perspective on playing golf and I have been a lot more relaxed than I normally would be and that seems to have been the difference.

“I felt mentally fresh, calm and I really enjoyed playing out there today.”

Laskey began the final round one back from Jamie Elson (Team Jenahura), but the Surrey-based golfer carded a final-round 75 and finished tied for eighth, six shots back from the winner.

Uzzell (Hornsea Golf Club) took second thanks to a last-day 67, four under par. He missed a golden birdie opportunity at the last which had he made would have heaped the pressure on Laskey, who in the end was two clear as he walked onto the final tee of the tournament.

Marcus Armitage (Howley Hall Golf Club), twice a winner on the EuroPro Tour this season, took £3,600 for third. That sees him move up to second on the Race To Desert Springs, all but guaranteeing his finish in the top five on the season’s standings, an achievement rewarded with a category on the 2016 Challenge Tour.

The final round was filmed for a two-hour highlights package which will air on Sky Sports on Tuesday, September 8.

The next HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour event is the HotelPlanner.com Championship at Prince’s Golf Club, after which the top 60 on the Race To Desert Spring will be invited to the season-ending Matchroom Sport Tour Championship in Spain.
