CHALLENGE TOUR report and scores

Fox nibbles into Nacho’s ROLEX lead

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Nacho Elvira carded a three-under-par third-round 69 to maintain his lead at the ROLEX Trophy and edge ever-closer to a career-changing third European Challenge Tour victory of the season, which would earn automatic graduation to The European Tour.
The gap at the top of the leaderboard was reduced though as New Zealander Ryan Fox signed for a five under par 67 to move to within two shots of the Spaniard, but Elvira is sure to take confidence from his final round performances en route to his brace of wins this season.
On the way to claiming his first title of 2015 at the Challenge de Madrid, the 28 year old holed an incredible albatross in the final round to blitz the field on home soil, while a six under final round 65 at the Kärnten Golf Open presented by Mazda helped him to a second win in as many months.
If the Madrid player were to repeat those feats and add another title to his trophy cabinet at Golf Club de Genève, he would be the third player in five years to earn fast-track promotion to The Race to Dubai at the prestigious ROLEX Trophy.
Frenchman Benjamin Hebert and Swede Kristoffer Broberg both completed their hat-trick of victories in a single season at the Geneva venue in 2011 and 2012, respectively, but Elvira insists that he is just trying to enjoy his current good form.
“It would be great to get a third win but I am not too caught up in all of that,” said Elvira, whose 54-hole total of 19 under par equals the winning score of last year’s winner and current BMW PGA Champion Byeong-hun An.
“Ever since I got my second win, I am trying not to think about it. I am just trying to enjoy the position I’m in and hopefully tomorrow will be a good day – hopefully sunny like it has been the last three days.
“I obviously played really good all day. The front nine was flawless but on the back nine, some shots were not as accurate.
“I had a couple of bad breaks. On the 15th, my tee shot went into the rough and it was a terrible lie so I made a bogey. Then on the 17th, I guess we mis-clubbed it.
“I hit a really good shot, right over the pin and it was 30 yards longer so I guess there was a big gust of wind and I wasn’t able to get up and down. But overall it was a good day, I cannot complain.”
As it is a unique Pro-Am format, Elvira will not be playing alongside his other contenders to the throne on the final day but instead with three amateur players, and he believes that that will ease the pressure a little.
“I guess it will be great playing in the last group but not with my closest challengers,” he said. “Honestly, it is great not to have to think about how the other guys are playing. I will enjoy the company tomorrow, enjoy the guys I will be playing with and that is when I play my best golf.
Fox, who has one Challenge Tour title under his belt already this year, is also relishing the unusual format on the final day and has been thoroughly enjoying the week in Switzerland.
“We had a great day,” said the 28 year old, son of All Black legend Grant. “It was a great team again, we had a lot of fun and as we were first group in the morning so it was a bit faster than yesterday. The greens firmed up a little bit today I thought and there were rolling really well this morning.
“It will be different tomorrow to be playing for a win without my opponent, but everyone is relaxed out there, we are all playing good golf and obviously there are some really hot scores out there.
“I would like to make a go of it tomorrow but it will be weird not to have much an idea of what is going on. But I do love the format and, providing Nacho doesn't do something silly on the back nine, I should have a chance tomorrow.”
Lurking one shot further back on 16 under are Englishman Ryan Evans and current Road to Oman Rankings leader Ricardo Gouveia, who has one Challenge Tour title to his name this year and for whom a strong result this week would make the promising 24 year old the highest-ranked Portuguese player in the history of the Official World Golf Ranking.

Paul Lawrie has 72 - seven shots behind leader at halfway

Horsey bolts clear in Denmark - three ahead
EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS

David Horsey will take a three-stroke lead into the weekend at Made in Denmark after a four under par 67 on another brilliant day at Himmerland Golf and Spa Resort.
In front of crowds totalling nearly 20,000, the Englishman cruised to 12 under par 130 for the tournament, breaking away from compatriot John Parry (67) and Australian Richard Green (65) with an eagle, five birdies and three bogeys.
Home favourites Thomas Bjørn and Søren Kjeldsen are four and five under respectively, while Ryder Cup Captain Darren Clarke is three under, but Andreas Hartø stole the headlines despite missing the halfway cut on home soil.
The 27 year old stiffed his tee shot on the now famous par three 16th hole, rolled in the putt from a few feet for birdie, then went down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend, who was in the crowd, sending the thousands of spectators into raptures.
Quotes
David Horsey

“I had a good holiday last week, which is always nice mid-season. You get a little bit burnt out sometimes and I was getting frustrated with it, so it was nice to put the clubs away for a week and get away and forget about golf. It seems to have done the job. You’ve got to enjoy being in this position – you’re not going to turn down leading a golf tournament heading into the weekend.”
John Parry
“I played well but it was a bit more a struggle than yesterday. For the bogey at the last I holed a six or seven footer, so it actually doesn’t feel as bad when you do that. I hit it a lot better on the back nine – my front nine – and I was holing pretty much everything I looked at. I’ve put a new putter in the bag this week. I was really struggling with my putting and not being consistent. Sometimes you just need to chuck something in and see how it works. I’ve worked on technique, which has been helpful, but out on the course you just need to see it and hit it.”
Richard Green
“It’s a bit of a surprise as I’ve just come off three weeks of not playing and just caddieing for my fiancée. I’m hitting it well and putting well, so I’ll take it. It’s freshened up the mind a little bit. At this time of year the tournaments are a bit thin if you’re not in the Majors or the WGCs, so it’s been a good break before a busy end to the season. You see the game in a different light when you’re caddieing. You get your strategy mind going. I’ve always found after I’ve caddied for her that my mind is working better.”
Andreas Hartø

“Last year we had some great memories on that hole. It was a great experience and she was here watching me more or less for the first time. I was very nervous when it happened, but I couldn’t have written it any better. I don’t know how I hit that shot or made that putt. I was almost crying when I hit the putt because I knew what was about to happen. I know she might think I’m a bit silly but it’s going to be a great memory for us as we grow older.”

But the best shots of the day came from two amateurs, David Lind and Ron Stewart.

Kevin Duncan lets big cheque opportunity slip

through his fingers on PGA EuroPro Tour

Cruden Bay's Kevin Duncan, well placed after rounds of 66 and 70 to collect a four-figure prize in this week's PGA EuroPro Tour event at Close House, Northumberland, slumped to a closing seven-over-par 78 for a one-over-par total of 214. He earned £383
Top  Scot was Paul Shields (Kirkhill) who earned £715 for a joint 15th finish on 210 with rounds of 71, 70 and 69 - eight behind the winner of the £10,000 first prize, Marcus Armitage (Howley Hall) (67-67-68 for 11-under 202).
The Saltman brothers from Archerfield Links, Elliot (68-70-73 for 211) and Lloyd (68-71-73 for 212) shared 19th and 22nd places respectively. Elliot earned £500 and Lloyd £465.
Scott Borrowman (Dollar) finished joint 39th on 215 (70-68-77) for a payslip of £340.
Michal Stewart (Troon Welbeck) faded after a bright start, shooting 67, 73 and 76, for 216 and joint 46th position for which the payment was £312.

Second £10,000 win of season by Armitage
 NEWS RELEASE BY NICK TEALE
Marcus Armitage moved a step closer to a full Challenge Tour card with his second HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour win of the season, taking home the Tree Of Life Championship title from Close House.
The 28-year-old finished the tournament 11 under par with a final-round 68, three under par. Ireland’s Brian Casey (Headford Golf Club; 68, 67, 68) went two under the card for his concluding 18 but finished second on nine under. Sebastian George Garcia Grout (Golf de Poniente Mallorca; 68, 69, 68) of Spain came third with a score of eight under.
Armitage led throughout the final round having started with a one-shot advantage. He negotiated the front nine with seven pars, a birdie at 7 and a bogey at 8 but pulled away from the field with an eagle at the 10th. He holed out on the 15th for birdie when a bogey looked likely and concluded the Tree Of Life Championship with three pars for victory.
The win is Armitage’s third on Europe’s third-tier tour and his second this season after success at Cumberwell Park. His £10,000 win sees him move up to fourth on the Race To Desert Springs, from which the top five at the end of the season progress to the Challenge Tour
“I feel great,” said Armitage, who also takes home a brand new Motocaddy trolley, Bushnell Tour X Range Finder, Bolle sunglasses and £500 to spend at HotelPlanner.com.
“I have played very solidly this week and have trusted myself to get the job done. I hit 15 greens and only had to chip on two holes, which is key around here.
“I thought  the 5-wood on the 10th might have been a bit soft and a bit short but we got up there and it was a five-foot putt so I was really pleased. The 15th was massive; I missed it in a real bad spot there and it needed something special.
“It is massive to be in that top five because you are always looking to move up. I am looking for another win now to secure it because now I want to win the Order of Merit.
“Moor Allerton is close to my house and the extra day could suit me. It is great to be going there off a win. It is a good track where I have played a lot of golf so I am really looking forward to it.”
Aaron Rai (DCD Group; 67, 68, 72) consolidated his place in the all-important Race To Desert Springs top five with a tied fourth finish at Close House.
Highlights of the Tree Of Life Championship will air on Sky Sports on Tuesday, September 1. The next HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour event is the 72-hole Clipper Logistics Players Championship at Moor Allerton Golf Club in Leeds, the first time a third-tier tour has staged a four-round tournament.
