European Challenge Tour event in Switzerland

Elvira goes four clear at halfway in Rolex Trophy tournament

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Nacho Elvira fired a seven-under-par second round of 65 to take a four-shot halfway lead at the ROLEX Trophy, with first round leader Ryan Fox leading the chasing pack at Golf Club de Genève.
The Spaniard, who trailed by one after an opening 63, has already claimed two European Challenge Tour wins this season and a third victory this week would see him claim automatic promotion to The European Tour.
The 28 year old won the Challenge de Madrid in April and followed it up a month later with victory at the Kӓrnten Golf Open presented by Mazda.
Elvira currently sits in sixth place in The Road to Oman Rankings and would love to return to The European Tour, having played on it in the 2014 season, and has enjoyed his time in Switzerland so far this week.
“Obviously it has been two great rounds,” he said. “I hit the ball really well and I’ve been putting well, I’ve put myself in the right positions, so it’s been great.
“As a course it’s not that long, it’s an old course but you have to play very cautiously. I did not hit many drives from the tee, more irons or three woods because there are many doglegs and to attack the pins you have to be in position.”
“The format this week is different because you don’t see the other guys. You compete against them but don’t see them, but I like getting to meet new people and meet the members here in Geneva.
“So far it’s been a great start to a great week, we’re having a lot of fun. Hopefully that can continue in the next two days.”
If successful in claiming his third season victory Elvira would become the third player to secure promotion at the ROLEX Trophy after Benjamin Hebert and Kristoffer Broberg.
Fox remained in the hunt as he followed his opening round of 62 with a 70 to continue his impressive form since arriving in Europe earlier this summer.
The New Zealander, the son of All Black legend Grant Fox, took victory at Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge as well as claiming three other top ten finishes and qualifying for The Open Championship.
Behind them sit five players in a tie for third place on 11 under par, the pick of them being Road to Oman Rankings leader Ricardo Gouveia, whose round of 65 – remarkably his 45th under par round in 50 this season – featured nine birdies and tied Elvira as the low round of the day.
Alongside him are Sweden’s Jens Dantorp, England’s Ryan Evans, Irishman Ruaidhri McGee and South African Haydn Porteous, with Sebastien Soderberg and José-Filipe Lima – whose first nine holes took just 29 strokes – completing the top ten two shots further back.
The unusual format of the tournament sees each professional partner three amateurs in a three-day Pro-Am after day one saw two juniors playing alongside pairs of professionals, also in a Pro-Am.

Made in Denmark European Tour report and scoreboard

Paul Lawrie's 65 puts him in 3rd place.
 EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
David Horsey opened with an eight under par 63 to set the pace in the first round of the highly anticipated second edition of Made in Denmark.
The Englishman carded seven birdies, an eagle and a bogey to lead by one shot from Welshman Oliver Farr at Himmerland Golf and Spa Resort, where more than 15,000 spectators created the sort of electric atmosphere that helped make the tournament such a huge success on its debut last year.
Paul Lawrie was another shot back on six under, while European Ryder Cup Captain Darren Clarke and home favourite Thomas Bjørn – playing together for the first two rounds – both signed for 69.
Another Danish idol, Søren Kjeldsen, described it as the best day he has ever had on a golf course, acknowledging the enormous crowds around the 16th green holding up red flags bearing ‘SK 500’ in recognition of his reaching 500 European Tour appearances last week.
The 40 year old delighted the masses by knocking his tee shot to within a few inches, and tapped in for birdie to vociferous support.
Quotes
David Horsey
“It’s always fabulous to get off to a start like that. I holed my third shot on the 11th from 130 yards to make eagle, then I had five birdies in a row from the 13th, so it was a very good first nine. The magic number crept into my head going down the fourth – my 13th – and I wouldn’t say it affected me too much but I three-putted, then made a mess of the next hole. After that it was just about getting back to my strategy and finishing strongly, and I managed to do that. I’m pleased with how I handled myself in that situation. You don’t get many opportunities to shoot 59, so I can probably be excused for letting it creep in.”
Oliver Farr
“It was fantastic. The course wasn’t for the taking – you had to hit a lot of good shots and good putts, and I did that. It’s what we practise for – to hit good shots in close – and I did that today. I rode the wave. It was one of those days where everything seemed to click. I’ve just had a three-week spell off – my longest break since Christmas – and it has really refreshed things.”
Paul Lawrie
It was decent. The course is lovely and in fabulous condition. The greens are rolling pure and I holed some nice putts. I have been known to have a wee moan about my putting, but recently it’s been great. I’ve got a new putter from Caledonia Putters which has a little bit firmer grooves, and I’m rolling the ball as well as I’ve ever rolled it. This week is really good. The organisation is brilliant and there are lots of spectators – it’s just what you want.”

Søren Kjeldsen
“I’ve never been as emotional on a golf course as that. It was incredible to feel the warmth from the people who all wanted me to do well. You can’t really describe it. I didn’t realise they were going to do anything like that, but they made it the best day I’ve ever had on a golf course. There is a lot of nervous energy, starting a week like this. I came into the event with a lot more confidence than I did 12 months ago, but there’s still a lot of nervousness there and I made a bit of a stumbling start. Then I reached 16 and everything started to happen. That turned my round around, because after that it was good.”

Anglo-Scot Murray White first pro to retain
PGA Super 60s title

PGA NEWS RELEASE
By Lee McLAUGHLIN
Anglo-Scot Murray White made golf history as he became the first pro to successfully defend the PGA Super 60s Championship title.

The Centurion Club pro, partnered by seven handicapper Glyn Radcliffe of Mill Hill Golf Club, sealed his place in the record books after the pair claimed victory on the first hole of a sudden death play-off at Caldy Golf Club.

A second successive round of 67 saw them tie at 10 under par 134 for the tournament with Chesterfield PGA pro Mike McLean and his amateur partner John Wheeldon, who birdied the last for a 68 to add to their opening day 66 and force the shoot-out.

But the conclusion ended without any more fireworks as Murray made par on the first hole of extra-time – missing a birdie chance from seven feet.
That left McLean and Wheeldon seemingly straight forward putts from two feet to take the play-off down the second. However, both missed leaving Murray and Radcliffe as victors.

Murray, surprised to find himself in the annals of PGA history with the win, said: “It would be better if I’d holed my putt to win but these things happen. I misread my putt from six or seven feet but so did the other two and a win’s a win I suppose.

“I’ve had bad experiences of play-offs in the past, having lost in a couple, so this is the first positive one but I do feel for the other two guys.

“I’m pleased with the outcome and pleased with how we played today. We putted really well, linked in nicely and had a bit of a wobble up the last but you’ve got to have a wobble somewhere.

“This has been huge for Glyn, but he definitely played his part over what has been a very good golf course.

Radcliffe, who plays with White every week but only got the call to play in the Championship a week ago, admitted the occasion did get to him.

“I was in tears walking back up after the play-off,” he said.

“Murray only asked me last week to come and play and I had no hesitation, although I’ve not been playing well this year having dropped from four to seven of  a handicap  but this has been outstanding.

“I can’t believe we’ve won it. I was so nervous in the play-off, I’ve never been so nervous in my life but to win like we did was unfair on the other guys.”
Murray pocketed £1,250 for the win, while McLean's consolation was £1,000.

The Superb 70s title, offering pairings aged 70 and over a chance of some silverware, was won by Maurice Bembridge and his partner Michael Curley, who were overall winners two years ago. They finished on five-under-par after a second round six-under-par 66.
