DAVID JAMES CONFIDENT OF WEDNESDAY FINISH TO INAUGURAL ABERDEEN MASTERS

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
David James, pictured, from Dumfries, the chief executive of the Senior Golf Circuit, is confident that the inaugural Aberdeen Masters tournament for pro seniors and Category 1 amateurs over the age of 48 will be able to play a second and final round at Meldrum House Hotel's golf course, Oldmeldrum in Aberdeenshire on Wednesday.
Steady rain eventually saturated the course today (Tuesday) and play was first suspended at 12.15 and then called off for the day less than an hour later.
"The Meldrum House greenkeeping staff did a marvellous job to keep the course playable but they were fighting a losing battle as the rain intensified over lunchtime," said David James.
"There is more rain forecast overnight but also that it will be dry on Wednesday and I have drawn up a two-tee draw for our final round.
" The co-leaders on four-under-par 66 - Robert Arnott, Nick Job and Miguel Angel Martin - will tee off at 11.10am from the first tee. I do hope that spectators will come out in force to see these stars in action in what should be an exciting finish.
"There is no admission fee and car parking is free as well."
The professional winner will earn £5,000 of the £33,300 prize fund which is financed mainly by Thistle Windows whose chief executive, Nick Robson, had the idea of having this tournament at Meldrum House where he is an active member.
There will be prize vouchers for the leading amateurs.

Penge reached the semi finals of last week’s Boys Amateur Championship at Royal Birkdale and has notched up three wins this season, including the Scottish Open Stroke Play Championship. His fellow England boys international Moore won the Carris Trophy last month and Harry’s best finish of the season came at the Portuguese International Amateur Championships where he was tied sixth.
Nairn’s Sandy Scott will also be a key member of the team having won the Scottish Boys Open Stroke Play Championship, the East of Scotland Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship and the Stephen Gallacher Foundation Trophy this summer.
The format for the Jacques Leglise Trophy match is four foursomes ties each morning, eight singles matches on the afternoon of Friday 28 August and nine singles matches on the afternoon of Saturday 29 August.

Tuesday wash-out: Aberdeen Masters cut to

two rounds with two-tee start on Wednesday

The inaugural Aberdeen Masters seniors tournament at Meldrum House Golf Club, Oldmeldrum has been cut from three to two rounds, writes Colin Farquharson
Tuesday's second round was washed out by the nonstop rain which
eventually made parts of the course unplayable.
In the first instance, around 12.15, play was suspended and the players called in off the course.
Less than an hour later, with heavy rain setting in, David James, the Senior Golf Tour chief executive, decided to call it off for the day and play a final round on Wednesday, weather permitting.
A fresh draw has been made for the final 18 holes. It will be a two-tee start from the first and 10th.
The tournament, sponsored by Thistle Windows whose chief executive, Nick Robson, is a Meldrum House GC member, has a pro prizefund of around $33, 300. There will also be voucher prizes for the amateurs.

Chris Robb shoots a 69 despite double bogey 7

Former Scottish amateur champion Chris Robb (Meldrum House) was lying tied sixth at the end of the first round of the German PGA Developmental Tour event, the Augsburg Classic.
Robb shot a three-under-par 69 despite a double bogey 7 at the long 13th. He also bogeyed the fourth.

But the Banchory man (pictured) had a haul of six birdies to compensate for his slips. He birdied the first, fifth, sixth, seventh, 14th and 16th.
Leading the field on six-under 66 is Nicolas Thommen (Switzerland) by a shot from compatriot Benjamin Rusch and Germany's Dominik Pietsch.
