RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION
PRESS RELEASE
REILLY IS STROKEPLAY CHAMPION
It is not often
that a player dominates an event but this was certainly the case for
Kilmacolm’s Paul Reilly at the Renfrewshire Golf Union Stroke Play Championship
at Cochrane Castle Golf Club. His
opening round comprised six birdies, three in each half, and twelve pars for a
first round 65 to lead by six over local member Derek Anderson. Any suggestion that Paul would allow others
into the contest was negated as he strolled to one under par playing the
eighteenth where he carelessly bogied for a level par second round and an eight
shot lead over Derek who shared second place with Paul Alexander from Caldwell.
Leading scores:
Paul Reilly
(Kilmacolm) – 65 – 71 = 136
Paul Alexander
(Caldwell) – 73 -71 = 144
Derek Anderson
(Cochrane Castle) – 71 – 73 = 144
Jack Currie
(Greenock) – 74 – 71 = 145
SECOND MATCH PLAY TITLE FOR JACK CURRIE
The final stages
of the Renfrewshire Golf Union Match Play Championship took place in excellent
weather at Cochrane Castle Golf Club with the challenging course set up well
for the remaining four contestants.
First up were Bonnyton’s David Dickson and sixteen year old Jamie Sinammon from Greenock Whinhill. David dominated the early stages and was five up after six holes. However, Jamie responded well and had reduced the deficit to three by the turn. He further reduced this to two but, after a brave fight back, he lost two and one.

Jack Currie (pictured) from
Greenock won this title two years ago at East Renfrewshire at age fourteen
which was an amazing achievement. His
semi final opponent was Alan Kelly whose home course advantage came to the fore
at the difficult first to go one up. Jack
struggled to keep in the game in the early holes but soon commenced a hot
putting streak which broke Alan’s heart and saw Jack finish three under par for
a five and four victory.
In the final,
Dickson birdied the first and was one up with six to play. A par from Jack saw the match level and the
magic putter was back at the fourteenth where a fifteen foot putt gave him a
two and a one hole lead. Pars at the next
two were good enough for a three and two victory. There is little doubt that no one in the past
has had two County Championships at the age of sixteen.
