Jonathan Torrance is new Lanarkshire boys' match-play  champion after epic final

Jonathan Torrance of Drumpellier is the new Lanarkshire Boys Matchplay Champion for 2015. In an epic final he beat current boy international Andrew Thomson of Lanark at the 9th extra hole. The boys could not be separated in the regulation 18 with never more than one hole in it.
Extra holes produced eight consecutive pars for both boys before a bogey from Andrew at the ninth presented Jonathan with a three foot putt for the title which he duly holed. Indeed a truly memorable final similar to the men’s final earlier in the month.

Sordet wins Northern Ireland Open

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Clément Sordet sealed a sensational maiden professional victory in just his fourth start in the paid ranks at the Northern Ireland Open in Association with Sphere Global and Ulster Bank after a dramatic finale in front of bumper crowds at Galgorm Castle.

is five under par final round of 67 put him on 17 under par, one shot ahead of John Hahn.
In front of bumper crowds at Galgorm Castle for the third year running, Tthe Frenchman, playing just his fourth event as a professional, fired four birdies and an eagle to card a five under par final round 67,  complet inge a perfect start to his Challenge Tour career with a one-shot win over American John Hahn .
The 22 year old trailed by two going into round four but hit the front around the turn and never wavered withon a flawless back nine to seal his maiden professional win earn a 17 under total and become the second French winner on the Challenge Tour this year after his clubmate at Lyon Salva gny, Sebastien Gros .
“I honestly am living my dream,” he said. “I don’t even realise just yet that I even won, it feels amazing but I think it’s going to take time to sink in – maybe tonight or tomorrow when I wake up.
“With my caddie, we just did such a great job today and over the past three days as well. We kept the same strategy that had worked well for the first three rounds.
“I made some good putts and had three eagle putts, which shows I was playing good approaches, and holed one of them on the second which was a good start to the round.
“I played amazing golf, especially today, it felt like I didn’t make any mistakes out there, and it just feels amazing to win.
“I didn’t look at the leaderboards at all so I didn’t know where I was until I came off 17, where there’s such a big board you can’t ignore it!
“I then just thought I had to keep calm and make sure I hit it in the fairway on the last hole. I’d made a huge putt on 17, I’d rolled it a long way past but holed it for par coming back.
“At that point I was leading by two and I knew someone was going to make a birdie on the last, so I just had to make my par, so I took four iron off the tee, then five iron and wedge and two putts to make it safe. ”
Sordet entered the professional ranks on the back of a glittering amateur career, winning six titles on the American collegiate circuit as a student at Texas Tech University and representing Europe in last year ’s Palmer Cup.

Still, the Lyon native admitted he never expected to experience such immediate success, and was surprised with how he handled himself in front of t he huge Northern Irish crowds.
“It’s only my fourth event as a professional, so to be in the winner’s circle already feels amazing ,” he said.. “ I played really well last year at college in America and I think that helped get me ready for the Challenge Tour.
“I was at Texas Tech University and in the US we play such hard courses that prepare you for professional golf really well – it’s not easier here, but you’re ready for this.
“I had a really good year out there last year and I won six times in college, so I have won before, but nothing compares to this.=“I’ve never seen that many people around the greens but I tried not to notice them too much. I loved it out there though, the atmosphere was unbelievable.
“If you’re not nervous out there you’re lying, but I was excited too. I was shaking a bit but I just tried to stay patient and do what I’ve been doing for so many years.”
American Hahn also shot a fine 66 on a dramatic afternoon, including a birdie-birdie finish, to take second place on his own ahead of Ricardo Gouveia and Daan Huizing.
Road to Oman Rankings leader Gouveia made eight birdies in his final round, but three bogeys prevented the Portuguesehim taking a second victory of the season.
Dutchman Huizing, the inaugural winner of this event in 2013, also finished with a 66 to share third place, a highlight for him coming when he almost made a hole in one on the par three seventh hole.
Overnight leaders Emilio Cuartero Blanco and Niall Turner struggled with expectation, though the Spaniard’s eagle on the 18th gave him a tie for eighth place after a 72, Irishman Turner one shot further back and 12th on his own.
The Northern Irish faithful were again out in force, with 39,202 attending over the course of the week, and they will have been heartened by one of their own, Chris Selfridge, who finished in a tie for 16th after a final round of 70.

Bradley Moore leads after first qualifying

round at Southport and Ainsdale

FROM THE R and A WEBSITE
England’s Bradley Moore leads by one after the first stroke play qualifying round of the 2015 Boys' Amateur Championship at Royal Birkdale and Southport and Ainsdale.
The 17-year-old from Kedleston Park posted a seven-under-par 65 at Southport and Ainsdale to lead by one from Frenchman Romain Vallaeys with fellow Englishman Oliver Clarke a shot further back on five-under-par. Sweden’s Felix Palson recorded the best round of the day at Royal Birkdale with a four-under-par 67.
Moore enjoyed a remarkable front nine, eagling the par four 4th hole after holing his wedge shot approach from 116 yards, and then eagling the 489 yard par five 7th after his six-iron approach finished 8ft from the hole. The Carris Trophy winner, who finished tied 23rd at last week’s European Amateur Championship in Slovakia, recovered from a dropped shot on the 11th to birdie four of the last five holes.
“It always helps with two eagles but apart from that it was solid golf,” said the England boys squad member. “All you have to do is qualify so I’m not too worried that I am leading. I am just looking for another solid round tomorrow to get through and then it is a different game after that.”
Vallaeys took the early lead after producing an excellent six-under-par 66 at Southport and Ainsdale. The 17-year-old from Terre Blanche carded four birdies on the front nine before eagling the par 5 9th hole. Vallaeys, who finished tied 14th at the recent Grand Prix des Landes at Hossegor in France, picked up further shots on the 10th and 16th holes with the only blemishes on his card coming with dropped shots at the 3rd and the 15th.
“There wasn’t really anything bad today, even when the shot was not good the consequences weren’t so bad,” he said.
Oliver Clarke used his local knowledge to good effect when he posted a five-under-par 67 at Southport and Ainsdale. The Hillside member, who was third at the Irish Boys Championship in June, reached the turn in 33, four-under-par, and bounced back from bogeying the 11th, with birdies at the 16th and 17th.
“It was great, I managed to hit almost every fairway and green today. It was just a good solid round of golf really,” said the English boys squad member
“I would consider this to be one of the biggest junior events in the world. If I was able to win, especially so close to home, it would be unbelievable. You can’t get much better than that really.
“Birkdale tomorrow is a longer course with narrower fairways and I will just stick to my game plan which is to hit fairways and greens, stay patient and play the best I can.”
Palson carded four birdies and no dropped shots on the way to a 67 at Royal Birkdale. The 18-year-old from Lidingo, whose best finish so far this season was 11th at the German Boys Championship at St Leon-Rot, is looking to follow in his countryman Oskar Bergqvist’s footsteps after his victory in last year’s championship at Prestwick.
He said, “It was very solid. I was hitting greens and putting very good today so I’m very pleased. I know Oskar well so I would hope to win here of course and see Sweden win again.”
Four players were tied on three-under-par after their rounds at Southport and Ainsdale, Daniel List, from Australia, Englishman Arrun Singh Brar, Guido Migliozzi, from Italy, and David Ravetto from France.
The stroke play qualifying stage sees the competitors play one round each at both Royal Birkdale and Southport and Ainsdale. Thereafter the field is cut to 64 players and ties before the match play stage finds the champion over the final four days, Thursday 13 to Sunday 16 August 2015, at Royal Birkdale.
The second round of qualifying stroke play gets underway at 7:00 am on Wednesday, 12 August. Admission and parking is free for spectators at both venues.
