Spaniard Blanco  goes one clear in Northern Ireland Open
EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Emilio Cuartero Blanco shot a second successive round of 65 at Galgorm Castle to lead by one shot on 12 under par at the halfway point of the Northern Ireland Open in Association with Sphere Global and Ulster Bank.
The 24 year old, bidding to become Spain’s third European Challenge Tour winner this season after Nacho Elvira and Borja Virto Astudillo, did not drop a shot all day while adding six birdies to the eight made in his opening round and leads from John Hahn and leading Irishman Niall Turner.
Cuartero Blanco’s previous best finish this season was a tie for ninth in the curtain-raising Barclays Kenya Open but he has quickly found his best form in front of the Northern Irish crowds at one of the best-attended events on the Challenge Tour.
“I played really solid golf again today,” he said. “I didn’t make any mistakes like the two bogeys I had yesterday, and I can’t really complain about anything. I felt strong mentally and played really well for the second day running, so I’m very happy.
“I’m hitting good fairway shots and then off the tee I’m just staying out of trouble, because on this course you can find trouble at any time.
“But I’m especially happy with my mental game. I’m really focused on every shot, I don’t have birdies in my head, it’s just clear and it’s helping me play good golf.
“I got a tip from Nacho on Wednesday afternoon when I was practising my putting. He told me my putting stroke looked really fast and that I should slow it down a little bit and after that I hit through the line better, better speed on my putts as well, so thank you Nacho!
“Conditions were perfect today. I was playing with Gary Wardlow, a local player, and I asked him how many days of summer do they get like this one, and he said ‘one, so you’d better enjoy it!’ I don’t think we could play this course in better conditions really, it’s perfect.
“We’ve only done two days and actually now, we have the hard work to come. I just need to enjoy the course, try to play well, and then on Sunday we will see.”
Hahn, co-leader after round one, needs a good finish to boost his Road to Oman Ranking, where he currently sits in 77th after just one top five finish this season, at the D+D REAL Czech Challenge.
The 26 year old American came through Qualifying School in 2013 to earn a place on The European Tour but insists he is not looking too far ahead at this point, despite his great start here.
“I’m just trying to have fun,” he said. “I wasn’t doing that for a while but I’m just trying to enjoy myself on the golf course now.
“I’ve got no expectations or goals on myself for this week, my only goal would be to maybe get in contention and see how I deal with that.
“My pairing for the first two days, with James Heath and Ross McGowan, was perfect, I’m quite chatty on the course and they made me really comfortable.
“Momentum is a big thing here and I carried some into today so hopefully I can keep that going through the weekend.”
Turner has only recently returned from a long-term back injury but has found form in front of the Irish crowds and is keen to make up for lost time.
“I’ve had a long time waiting to get back out here,” he said. “It’s been a complete nightmare to be honest so to be back now and in contention is fantastic, I couldn’t have wished for anything more.”
One shot further back are Scotland’s Jamie McLeary, third here in 2013 and now 21 under par for his last four rounds at Galgorm Castle, and Frenchman Sebastien Gros, currently second in the Road to Oman Rankings.
Daan Huizing, another of the co-leaders after the first round and winner of this event in 2013, is well within striking distance on nine under par alongside Australian Scott Arnold.
Northern Ireland’s own Gareth Shaw gave the home fans something to cheer about by firing the low round of the week so far, a seven under par 64 helping him to make the cut after a shaky opening round of 73.
Chris Selfridge trumped Shaw to be the leading Northern Irishman heading into the weekend after the 23 year old carded a five under 66 to sit four off the pace on eight under.
Tournament Ambassador Michael Hoey birdied two of his final three holes but his two under par total that was not enough to make the cut, missing by one shot.

Stephen Roger comes from five in arrears to win Paul Lawrie Junior Jug

FROM THE PAUL LAWRIE WEBSITE
Stephen Roger came from five shots back to claim the scratch prize in our Junior Jug at Moray Golf Club (Old Course)
The Cruden Bay player started the third and final round 5 shots behind Glen Burrett (Haggs Castle) on a day that started with torrential downpours for the 42 players who survived the cut, following 36 holes' play
Burrett, from Haggs Castle, led the way after opening rounds of 71  and 69.  His two-under total was good enough to be 5 ahead of Roger, who opened with a six-over 77 and followed-up with a second round of 68 (-3).
Burrett faltered in the final round however.  His 83 saw him fall back in to third place as Roger posted a steady 72 (+1) to take the title by three shots from Jamie Stewart (Old Course Ranfurley) also shot 72 to add to his first two rounds of 77 + 71 for a 220 total.
In the handicap competiton for the Junior Jug, Nairn's Logan Gillies 217 total gave him the top honour

Leven Gold Medal takes stage this weekend -

chance to take advantage of stars' absence

 By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The absence of Scotland's leading amateur golfers from this week's 145th year of the Standard Life Leven Gold Medal tournament - first staged in 1870 and the oldest amateur stroke play competition still in existence - opens the door of opportunity to a lot of tournament players who would not normally regard themselves as contenders for the prestigious gold medal gifted by the Standard Life Assurance Company, then proprietors of Lundin Estate.
It's the European amateur individual championship which concludes in Slovakia at the weekend that has creamed off men of the calibre of Jamie Savage, Liam Johnston, Craig Ross, Jack McDonald  and Co from the Leven entry list but there is still a strong enough field capable of making this one of the outstanding, most competitive events on the Scottish Golf Union's 72-hole Order of Merit circuit
Ryan Campbell (Falkirk) won the Cameron Corbett Vase and Alasdair MacDougall (Elderslie) the Tennant Cup a few weeks back.
There are two former Scottish champions in the field - Alexander Culverwell (Dunbar) and Barry Hume (Haggs Castle), named earlier this week in the Scotland team for the home internationals.

Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie) knows what it takes to win an SGU Order of Merit 72-holer,
Coming down wn from the North are three men capable of making a challenge - former  Scotland cap Bryan Fotheringham (Inverness), Jeff Wright (Forres) and Kyle Godsman (Moray).
Defending champion David Mitchell (Leven Thistle) won't have so far to travel as them and other Fifers who could keep the Gold Medal in the county include Ben Kinsley (St Andrews), Greg Forrester (Lundin), and Alex Moir (Thornton). Watch out also for Steven Aitken (Leven Golfing Society) who is playing well and knows the course.

There will be a cut to the leading 40 players and ties after Saturday's first 36 holes.

Patrick Tallent leads after day two at the Seniors Amateur Championship

FROM THE R AND A WEBSITE
American Patrick Tallent set up the chance to complete a rare double with a second round three-under-par 68 in the Seniors Amateur Championship at Royal County Down.
With the Championship having been blighted by rain delays on day one, eight groups had still to complete round two when play was halted due to darkness on Thursday at 8.40pm.
But Tallent was safely in the clubhouse on one-over-par 143, two shots ahead of fellow Virginian, Matthew Sughrue, with Portmarnock’s Adrian Morrow another three shots back in third place on 148.
Still on the course, the nearest threat to the leaders was American John McClure, who tied for third at Ganton last year. He was on eight-over-par for the Championship with six holes of the second round still to play.
Winner of the US Senior Amateur Championship at Big Canyon in California last September, it was a long day for Tallent, who comes from Vienna, Virginia.
Caught up in the first round overnight suspension, he completed 11 holes of his first round 75 before heading back out to post the first sub-par score of the Championship.
With five birdies he seemed set to take even firmer control, but he slipped up with two penalty shots in a double-bogey seven at the final hole. He had to take a drop from a bush beside a bunker and then hit into gorse and was again unplayable.
“Apart from that, it was a really good round,” said the former basketball player who worked in the world of finance before retirement. “I hit the ball close all day and the longest birdie putt was from about ten feet at the first.”
Tallent played in the final two-ball in the last round of the Championship at Royal Aberdeen two years ago, but was caught out by a torrential rain storm and finished tied seventh. He was also in the top ten 12 months ago.
Sughrue is a newcomer to Seniors golf, but the 55-year-old from Arlington has already made his mark by beating the professionals and winning the Maryland Senior Open.
He only played three holes of his first round on the first day. But, after the overnight suspension, he woke up to sunshine, made his move with an eagle at the 12th and shared the first round lead with Morrow on 74.
Sughrue’s second round 71 was a model of consistency with a bogey at the 11th being erased by a birdie from ten feet at the 16th.
Having recently retrained as a psychotherapist, he is enjoying the new phase in his life. “I missed a few makeable putts today but it was a good solid round,” he said.
The two players at the head of the leaderboard both had the advantage of using local caddies. Tallent had the experienced Roger Sharp on the bag and Sughrue hired 15-year-old schoolboy, Fintan Canavan.
Morrow, a former European and Irish Senior Champion, provided an Irish flavour to proceedings. He shot two rounds of 74 and could have finished closer to the two leaders if he hadn’t dropped shots at the 16th and 17th in the second round.
Martin Galway, from Brighton and Hove, led the English challenge on eight-over-par 150. His second round 71 included a real purple patch of four birdies and an eagle in seven holes from the turn.
Brady Exber, the defending champion from Las Vegas, shot rounds of 80 and 79 and was 16 shots behind the leader but just inside the projected cut mark.

John Woodhouse Wins Lanarkshire Men's Match-play Title

John Woodhouse, an 18 years old junior and four handicapper, defied the odds to beat the experienced Ed Wood, plus three Lanarkshire golfer,  of Crow Wood by 2 and 1 in the final.
This was a replay of the final after they finished all square after 21 holes last month
John was once again fast out the traps and was two up through ten with a mixture of birdies and fantastic short game skills. Ed looked to be back in it at one down with three to go but a birdie at 16 and par at 17 secured the win for young John, a member of host club East Kilbride.
His younger brother, 15 years old Alan off a 5 handicap caddied for him in all his matches. John and Allan are pictured on right.

Lanarkshire Events Convener and Press Officer Willie Sharpe presented the trophy in the clubhouse.

McDowell back in form with a 66 at Bridgestone Invitational

Graeme McDowell made a timely return to form to sit one shot behind first round leader Danny Lee, following a battling four under par round of 66 in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
The Northern Irishman passed a testing examination of his game, with his short game in particular impressing as Firestone Country Club played firm and fast.
McDowell made four birdies on the front nine, on the second, third, sixth and seventh holes, before one birdie and one bogey on the back nine.
It was his third consecutive round of 66 in Akron, after a strong finish to the event last year helped him claim his first top ten finish in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. He shares second place with American Jim Furyk, who bogeyed the last hole for his round of 66, with New Zealander Lee setting the pace on five under par following a round of 65.
Englishman Justin Rose shares fourth place with Rickie Fowler, with both players carding rounds of 67, while Frenchman Victor Dubuisson, Sweden’s Henrik Stenson and English trio Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Paul Casey are a further shot back, among an eight-way share of sixth position on two under par.
Marc Warren had a 71 and Stephen Gallacher a 77
Key player quotes
Danny Lee – 65 (-5)
“It was a good day for me. I left couple short birdie putts out there. It may sound a little bit too greedy, but I did. And I was hitting it that good, and I was very happy with my result.

“The course out there is in such phenomenal conditions out there. It's very firm, greens rock hard. If you can just hit the fairways, you're getting a lot of the short irons. Because the fairway is so firm you can hit the ball very, very far out there. I think that's the key to play this golf course, keep hitting it on the fairway and give yourself a chance. If you happen to miss a fairway, just try to roll it off the front of the green, and hopefully you'll make up and down.”

Graeme McDowell – 66 (-4)
“I think it (the course) is a bit trickier this year. In years gone past, the fairways have not really been a must because the greens have been extremely receptive, and the guys can still hit the greens out of the rough. I think this year, when it's firm and fiery, even the rough's firm and fiery, the ball is bouncing into trouble when you do actually hit it offline here, and the greens are hard to hold. So it's tricky. I had my first top 10 here last year. I kind of cracked this nut last year for the first time, and it was my best finish here ever. Maybe I’m starting to feel a little more comfortable on this golf course at long, long last. It was definitely a puzzle which had eluded me for years.”
Justin Rose – 67 (-3)
“My round was pretty much all in the first six holes today. I got out of the gate incredibly quickly. Before my round, I realised the course wasn't yielding low scores today, and I almost surprised myself to get off to such a quick start. I almost had to play patiently for the rest of the day. I drove the ball pretty well. I gave myself opportunities to make a lot of birdies, but just had a hard time getting it close really on the back nine.”
