Mehaffey holds the Lanark key to Ireland's

 If you have not managed to put in an appearance at the Girls' Home International Matches, being hosted splendidly by Lanark Golf Club this week, Friday is your last chance to do so.
That's when the three-day programme ends with a title-deciding contest for the Stroyan Cup, which goes to the champions, and the Swansea Spoon, which is awarded to the runners-up.
It's defending champions England against last year's runners-up Ireland.
England are bidding to win the tournament for the eighth year in a row. They have already won 13 of the past 15 years's Under-18s internatonals.
Olivia Mehaffey, pictured,  winner of all four of her ties so far this week, is Ireland's inspirational hope.
Still only 17, the lass from Royal Co Down Ladies Golf Club is having a terrific season. She played for the GB and I women's Vagliano Trophy team against the Continent of Europe in Belfast in June - not the Junior Vagliano Trophy team.
She won the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke play title at Troon on her last visit to Scotland.
If Mehaffey can win in the foursomes and in the singles against England - making it a perfect 100 per cent record of six wins out of six at Lanark - then Ireland have a definite chance of winning the Girls Home Internationals title for the first time ever!
Wouldn't you like to be able to say in years to come: "I know, because I was there"?
No admission charge. No car parking fees or restrictions on access to the clubhouse to eat or drink or for any other reason  
By the way, Scotland will be playing Wales with the winners finishing third in the table and the losers last of four - as Scotland were last year
What Olivia Mehaffey is to the Irish team, so Shannon McWilliam, who has her 16th birthday coming up, is No 1 in the Scotland line up.
Today Shannon beat GB and I internatonal Alice Hewson after birdieing three of the first four holes and winning four of the first five.
Well, worth watching.

KEEN SURFER RUTH MAKES SPLASH AT PGA ASSISTANTS' CHAMPIONSHIP

Keen surfer James Ruth rode the crest of a wave to fire himself into contention in the Galvin Green PGA Assistants’ Championship at Coventry Golf Club.
The Devon-based assistant, who works over the county border at China Fleet Golf & Country Club in Cornwall, scorched the par fives in seven under par including two eagles to join Jack Harrison at the top of the leaderboard
Ruth’s seven under par 66 left him level-pegging with Wildwood Golf & Country Club’s Harrison who carded a second successive 68 in the £32,000 event.
“I hit the ball unbelievably today, I was five under for the front nine and you can always say you left a few out there but I also missed a couple of eight footers,” said Ruth.
“It’s not very often you play the par fives in seven under for one round.”
Ruth brings plenty of tour experience to the table having played on the European Tour and also topped the order of merit on the satellite EPD Tour.
“I’ll lean on my experience, I had a few wins on the EPD, six or seven wins on that, so hopefully I can draw on that,” he added.
Ruth has just completed his first year on the PGA training programme – a new chapter in his golf career which he is enjoying and which he credits with revitalising his game.
“I’m absolutely loving it, the club has been great to me, they are very flexible and I’ve started to coach which I really enjoy and has helped my own game too. It’s been my best year for a while, playing wise, and I think coaching has helped that.”
Alongside Ruth at ten under par for the 54-hole event is Surrey’s Harrison with Ireland’s Neil O’Briain from Old Conna Golf Club two shots adrift.
For Harrison, who let a five shot lead slip going into last year’s final round, the game plan is straightforward.
“Last year I just got really defensive in the last round and changed tactics completely. It was probably the first time I was in that position in a three round tournament and I was a bit shell-shocked but this year I’m in a better place mentally.
“I feel positive, I’m just going to go out and try and shoot another five under. If I don’t, I don’t.”
O’Briain, who finished fourth 12 months ago, is also aiming to take the positives into the final round shootout having discovered a missing ingredient – fun!
“The game’s coming round, I’ve won a couple of times and I’m just trying to enjoy it a little bit more, I finally figured it out that you’ve got to enjoy yourself out here before you do anything else and that’s one of the reason’s I’m playing well as well,” he said.
One man definitely happy with his day’s work was Chorlton-cum-Hardy assistant Adam Hodkinson who had two eagles and five birdies with just a bogey on the fourth denying him a course record 64.
“To be honest I felt there was a good score out there today, but you have to go and do it,” he said“I felt that I took it easy and played really steady and it was nice to go out there and hit two eagles. I didn’t have a clue I’d equalled the course record though!”

France’s Alexandre wins tense showdown for Reid Trophy  Teenager Alexandre Lasalarie became the third French winner of the Reid Trophy today when he sealed a tense, two-shot victory at Preston Golf Club in Lancashire.  He was level par for the 54-hole English U14 boys’ open championship and held off a determined challenge in the final round from Pedro Marin Santander of Spain.  “It was very, very close,” said Jason Belot, who accompanied the French squad. “It is Alexandre’s first major win, first international win and it is the beginning of great things, we hope.”  Lasalarie, 14, (Image © Leaderboard Photography) shot level par 71 in the final round while his rival, who trailed by three at the start of the day, scored one-under 70.  The French boy demonstrated great tenacity, getting up and down for par five times in a row on the outward half to stay ahead. But the Spanish youngster eventually managed to close the gap after eight holes, which he played in one-under while Lasalarie was two over.  However, the French player immediately grabbed back the initiative with a birdie on the ninth – and stayed ahead for the rest of the match. Marin Santander dropped two behind when he bogeyed the 11th and although he birdied the 13th he couldn’t catch Lasalarie.  Lasalarie, who lives on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, played great golf on the back nine, with eight pars – including a fine save on 16 where he drove into a bunker - and a birdie on the 17th, which gave him a two-shot buffer playing the last.  The previous French winners of the Reid Trophy were Antoine Kuoch in 2013 and Stanislas Gautier, who won the title in 2007.  Third place went to Denmark’s Rasmuss Hojgaard who returned 70 today for a three-over total. Another Dane, Rasmus Bofill, was fourth on four-over.  The leading English player was Cambridgeshire’s Dominic Clemons (Gog Magog), who closed with one-over 72 to take fifth place on six-over par.  Also in the top ten was Worksop’s Eddie Turner-Bennett, who relaxed after the second round with a game of crazy golf – and returned to the course to shoot four-under 67, the low score of the tournament.  His pitching was first class and helped him to set up six birdies, reaching the turn in level par and coming home in four-under 31.  It’s his best round in competition and the 14-year-old said: “I hadn’t done too great in the last two days but now, overall I have done all right. My short game was poor, but today it was excellent.  Turner-Bennett, a past winner of the Sheffield U14 title, finished the championship in seventh place on eight-over par.  Nya Fraser-Lawrence (Hendon) birdied two of the last four holes to secure 10th place on 10-over par.  The top six players in the championship all get automatic entry into next year’s English Boys U16 Championship for the McGregor Trophy. Huizing benefits from sweet familiarity at Galgorm

Daan Huizing, the 2013 winner of the Northern Ireland Open in Association with Sphere Global and Ulster Bank, was in familiar territory after a six under par round of 65 earned him a share the first round lead with four other players at Galgorm Castle.
Morning starters John Hahn, Haydn Porteous and Niall Turner had already set the clubhouse target before Huizing and Emilio Cuartero Blanco matched them in the afternoon, with conditions perfect for scoring all day.
Dutchman Huizing did not drop a shot during the whole round as he returned to the scene of his maiden European Challenge Tour win, closing with three birdies in his final four holes to move to the summit.
“I’m very pleased,” said the 24 year old. “My game felt nice straight out of the blocks, I was just hitting really great shots. I made a birdie at three which is such a tough hole so that was a bonus, then made another at four.
“There were a couple of missed opportunities but then a really nice finish with a birdie on 15, a long putt on 16 and then just a good hole on 18 for a birdie.

“To switch up a gear and finish with three birdies in four holes is good and gives me a bit of momentum tomorrow, and I’m in the lead, which is a familiar position here for me, but there’s a lot of golf left.

“This is a very pleasant atmosphere, all the people are very kind, and it’s a really good course. Off the tee it’s very demanding, the greens are really good, and it makes me focus a bit better to really hit good shots. I’ve got a good feel on the greens here as well, which helps.”

South African co-leader Porteous was part of a remarkable group with Sebastien Gros and Simon Thornton, who both shot rounds of 66 to leave the group with an aggregate score of 16 under par on the opening day.

The 21 year old is currently 12th in the Road to Oman Rankings, aided by his victory in the season-opening Barclays Kenya Open, and showed signs of a return to form with a top five finish at Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge last month.

“I’m delighted with a 65, it’s always a great number to shoot,” he said. “I played very well from tee to green and made a few putts – I’ve been working hard on the mental side of my putting, I’ve been through a nervy spell, so I’m working hard and reading books and just trying to stay positive about it.

“Today was the first sign of progress so let’s hope this weekend it can stay like that and my ball striking stays the same.

“The win in Kenya sort of came out of the blue. I’d been struggling with my game from the end of last year to the beginning of this year and then Kenya was a surprise win.

“I feel like I’m in a better place with my game, physically and mentally, and I’ve got to stay with what I’m doing and hopefully I can get better in the mental aspect and challenge again this week.”

American Hahn’s best finish on the European Challenge Tour this season was a tie for fourth at the D+D REAL Czech Challenge in May, while highest-placed Irishman Turner has found remarkable form given he has just returned from a lengthy injury lay-off.

Cuartero Blanco, meanwhile, is seeking to follow in the footsteps of Nacho Elvira and Borja Virto Astudillo and become the third Spaniard to win on the Challenge Tour this season, and he got off to the perfect start, carding the best round of his career on Europe’s top developmental tour.

Irish former European Tour winner Simon Thornton was one of 11 players a shot off the pace in tied sixth place, as was Frenchman Gros, who currently lies in second place on the Road to Oman.

Michael Hoey, the Tournament Ambassador, opened with a one under par 70 as the five-time European Tour winner attempts to make the weekend's play at home event for the first time in three years.

 EuroPro rookie one clear in hunt for £10,000 win at The Carrick On Loch Lomond

Robbie Busher leads the COBRA PUMA GOLF Open by one stroke from Tim Rice and Jonathan Caldwell ahead of the final round of the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour event at the Carrick on Loch Lomond.

Rookie Busher has enjoyed a productive debut season with four top ten finishes already this summer. He carded a second-round 66, five under par, to lead on six under with 18 to play.

Tim Rice (67, 70 Team Ireland) shares second with his room-mate for the week Jonathan Caldwell (67, 70; BetMcLean), with both golfers five under par. Sam Connor (65, 73; Alsager Golf & Country Club) and Matthew Cort (69, 69; Beedles Lake Golf Club) share fourth on four under.

Busher (Salisbury and South Wilts GC) went out in 31 having started at the 10^th. He made birdies at 11, 14, 15 and 18 before breaking par again at the 2^nd. Bogeys at the 4^th and 6^th were both quickly cancelled out as he birdied the 5^th and 7^th holes to sign for a 66.

“I was good off the tee and I putted well today,” said Busher. “My iron play will need to be better tomorrow.

“It has been a good season. I have put myself sort of in contention but not quite going into some final rounds. I will be last group tomorrow and I am looking forward to it.  I don’t think it will faze me that much.

“I am not actually playing my best golf and I am not technically quite where I want to be, so the fact that I am up there but am not 100 percent happy with my game can only put me in good stead.

“I did a lot of work in the off season. I am pleased to have put a lot of good rounds together this season.”

The best round of the day was carded by Greg Payne (Chobham Golf Club), whose seven-under-par 64 saw him move from four over par to three under and a share of sixth.

The COBRA PUMA GOLF Open is a 54-hole strokeplay event. A cut to the leading ties has now been made with golfers three over par or better proceeding to play Friday’s final 18 in front of the TV cameras on Friday.

A two-hour highlights programme will air on Sky Sports on Tuesday, August 18. Spectator entry is free throughout and live scoring can be found at www.europrotour.com.
