Scots boys not in contention at English U14s championship

Alyx Murray (Troon Welbeck) was the highest placed Scot at the end of the first round of the English Under-14 boys' open stroke play tournament for the Reid Trophy at Preston Golf Club today.
Alyx had an eight-over-par round of 79 (out in 39, back in 40) to be tied 58th behind joint leaders Grady Robertson (Royal Lytham) and Andrea Milazzo from France, both on the par 71 mark.
Connor McKinney (Pitreavie) had an 80 (41-39) to be joint 72nd while Harry Austin (Dumfries and Co) shot an 83 (41-42) for a share of 101st place.

New putter takes Grady to top of Under-14s' leaderboard
England’s Grady Rogerson bought a new putter this morning on his way to Preston Golf Club to play in the English U14 boys’ open championship for the Reid Trophy – and ended up with a share of the lead.
The Lancashire 14-year-old took just 24 putts on his way to a score of level par 71, to top the first round leaderboard alongside Andrea Milazzo of France.
“I canned everything, although I also three-stabbed the 10th,” said Rogerson (Royal Lytham & St Annes). “My dad said it wasn’t the best idea, but I wanted a putter for fast greens and I wasn’t making anything with my old putter.”
After the round his dad, Glenn, was only too happy to have invested his winning vouchers on the putter – and to have done his son’s paper round this morning to give him an extra hour in bed!
Rogerson is playing in the event for the first time and dropped a couple of shots over the opening holes, but quickly got them back with an eagle three on the long seventh.
A couple more bogeys followed before he had three birdies on the inward half. He got to one-under with two to play but bogeyed the last: “I got quite nervous on the last,” he said. “I didn’t want to go big, so I was short, chipped on and missed.”
Rogerson was Lancashire U14 champion last year, is the reigning Lancashire schools’ champion and declared: “I’m glad to have done Lancashire proud.”
Milazzo, from Cannes Mougins, is both playing in the championship and representing France for the first time.
The 14-year-old is noted as a long hitter – in practice he drove the 311-yard 13th hole – and he made an impressive debut. Speaking through an interpreter, he expressed his pleasure at his score. He had two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine before coming home with nine straight pars.
The two players head a thoroughly international leaderboard at the end of a breezy day’s golf. There are 17 players sharing the first seven places and between them they represent nine different countries
Pedro Marin Santander of Spain holds third place on his own on one-over par. He got to one-under after a birdie on the 15th, but dropped back with a double bogey seven on the 17th
A shot behind him are Clement Lim of Switzerland and  two English players, Dominic Clemons (Gog Magog), who finished in style with a birdie on the 18th, and Conor Gough (Stoke Park) who described the challenge of the wind. “When you stood on the tee box you couldn’t really feel the wind but as soon as the ball got above the trees it would shoot off.”
He started with a good par save on the first and went on to notch up three birdies, including a chip-in on the 15th. “I didn’t enjoy finishing with three-putts on 16 and 17 but two over for the day is fine,” he remarked.
After tomorrow’s second round the field will be cut to the leading 70 players and ties, who play the final round on Thursday.

Hutcheon and Fox share Deer Park Masters halfway lead with 67s, shot ahead of Brown

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Man-in-form Greig Hutcheon shares the lead with Graham Fox at the halfway stage of the £15,810 Deer Park Masters at the Livingston venue.
Both shot five-under-par 67s to be a shot ahead of third placed Graeme Brown (Montrose Links)
Paul Lawrie Golf Centre player Hutcheon has won two and been second three times in his last seven Tartan Tour events, having won the Ellon pro-am on July 31.
Hutch got off to a great start with birdies at the first two holes. Although he dropped a shot at the third, he birdied the long eighth on his way to a two-under-par outward half of 34.
Hutcheon had a bogey-free inward half of 33, studded with three further birdies at the 13th, 14th and 18th.
Fox (Clydeway Golf) took longer to warm up to the task in hand and was one over par on the eighth tee. Then he got in the mood and covered the remaining holes with birdies at the eighth, ninth, 10th,14th,16th and 17th, that inward 32 including 2s at the short 10th and 16th.
Brown matched Hutcheon's 34 for the first nine, thanks to an eagle 3 at the eighth but he shed a shot at the long 14th and needed a grandstand finish of birdies at the 15th, 16th and 17th to stay in touch with the co-leaders.

RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION
                                 PRESS RELEASE

                                 turnberry.db@gmail.com

BOYS’ COUNTY GOLF CHAMPIONS

The top juniors in the Renfrewshire Golf Union’s clubs returned to Ranfurly Castle Golf Club for the previously postponed Boys’ Stroke Play Championship.  In testing conditions and with the event reduced to eighteen holes, Andrew Crusher from Eastwood returned a score of 76 which was matched by local member, Angus Frood.  However, the Caven Trophy went to Caldwell’s Alistair McNaughton with an excellent score of 74.
The top sixteen from the stroke play then fought it out at Kilmacolm Golf Club in match play for the Freedman Trophy which is awarded to the winner.  The semi finals saw Alistair McNaughton face Lewis Breslin from Fereneze and Matthew Dalrymple (Old Course Ranfurly) against Whitecraigs’ Calum Elliot.  With the first match all square, Alistair took command with birdies at 10, 11 and 13 but Lewis fought back to square the match after eighteen holes.  Alistair eventually won his place in the final with a birdie two at the second hole.  In the second semi final, Matthew was four up after eleven holes but, again, there was a brave fight back with Calum winning thirteen and fourteen to take the lead back to two.  However, this was enough for Matthew to win two and one.
The final was an excellent contest with both players establishing the standard with birdies at the first.  Matthew added two more birdies in the front nine to be two up at the turn and was three up by the time the boys had reached the tough sixteenth.  Both of them had birdie opportunities.  Alistair’s rolled agonizingly past while Matthew slotted his putt for birdie number four and a four and two win.

YOUTH STROKE PLAY CHAMPION

In the Renfrewshire Golf Union Youth Stroke Play Championship, Paul Dorrian of Greenock and Caldwell’s Sean Burns both recorded scores of 74 and, under the competition conditions, were required to go to two extra holes.  At Ranfurly Castle’s tight first hole, Sean found the rough right and, despite everybody’s best efforts, there was no sign of the ball after five minutes.  He got a par with his provisional ball but Paul’s four gave him a great advantage.  Sean went for broke at the eighteenth but found the tees left so Paul’s second par of the play off was enough for the Menzies Trophy to make its way to Greenock.

Scotland team for Men's Home Internationals

Champion MacIntyre Earns Men’s Debut as
Hume Returns to International Ranks

SGU NEWS RELEASE
Newly-crowned Fairstone Scottish Amateur champion Robert MacIntyre and former winner Barry Hume have been named in the Scotland side for next week’s Home Internationals.
MacIntyre’s reward for victory over Craigie Hill’s Daniel Young at Muirfield on Saturday is a first Men’s cap, after the Glencruitten teenager became the first left-hander in living memory to win the title and the first title-winning player from Argyll and Bute since 1935.
Hume, who claimed the Scottish Amateur crown in 2001 before joining the professional ranks, is also in the 11-man team bound for Royal Portrush – 14 years after his last appearance for Scotland.
The 33-year-old from Haggs Castle reached the quarter-finals at Muirfield and has also posted five other top-20 finishes this season to earn his return for the annual home nation matches from 12 – 14 August.
While European Amateur Team winners Grant Forrest and Ewen Ferguson are unable to compete due to qualifying for the forthcoming US Amateur Championship, the Scots retain a strong side as they seek their first Home Internationals crown since victory on home soil at Gailes Links in 2012.
The other four members from Scotland’s victorious European team in Sweden last month all tee up, namely Graeme Robertson – who is making his fifth Homes appearance – Jack McDonald, Greig Marchbank and Connor Syme.
Reigning South African Amateur winner Young, former Scottish Boys champion Craig Howie and Kirkhill’s Craig Ross, the recent winner of the Chiberta Grand Prix, are also in the line-up.
Kilmacolm’s Matt Clark adds his experience with a fourth straight Home Internationals appearance, with Ryan Campbell from Falkirk joining MacIntyre and Howie as new caps at this level.
National Coach Ian Rae said: “It’s an experienced team with some new faces who deserve their chance. We’ll look to try and build on our win at the European Amateur Team Championship and always enjoy the annual competition that the Home Internationals provide.”
Hume, who was out of amateur golf for 10 years before returning in 2013, said: “I feel like I’ve played at a pretty consistent level last season and this season.
“I feel as though I’ve built my way up through local golf, county golf and up to the national level. I felt if I showed that kind of formula, as I did when I was younger, it would lead to this sort of thing.
“From what I’ve seen, quite a number of the younger lads have really kicked on in the last 12 months, so to be considered to play with those boys is pleasing. I don’t want this to be just a one off for me.”
Hume, part of the winning Scotland side at the Home Internationals in 2000, added: “The Home Internationals at Royal Portrush was certainly something I highlighted to try and achieve, as it’s a course I’ve always wanted to play. I would rate our chances as strong next week.”

Scotland Team for the Home Internationals (club and age in brackets):

·         Ryan Campbell (Falkirk, 23)
·         Matt Clark (Kilmacolm, 33)
·         Craig Howie (Peebles, 20)
·         Barry Hume (Haggs Castle, 33)
·         Greig Marchbank (Thornhill, 21)
·         Robert MacIntyre (Glencruitten, 19)
·         Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie, 22)
·         Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie, 27)
·         Craig Ross (Kirkhill, 22)
·         Connor Syme (Drumoig, 20)
·         Daniel Young (Craigie Hill, 23)
The Scotland side is selected via the top five players on the World Amateur Golf Ranking, the top two on the SGU Men’s Order of Merit and four selectors’ picks.
