Tiger Woods finishes T18, rises in Official World Golf Ranking

Not that it will be greeted by a massive celebration within the cozy confines of Team Tiger Woods, but for the first time in four months, forward progress can be documented.
Drum roll, please . . . Tiger Woods has improved to No. 262 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Stunning, yes, to think that moving up four spots to 262nd is seen as progress for a guy who was once so cemented into the No. 1 position, but this is Woods’ golf in the summer of 2015. His share of 18th place in the Quicken Loans National was embraced as positive stuff, especially shooting in the 60s three times and closing with a 68, and while he was still a whopping 10 behind the winner, Troy Merritt, it at least allowed Woods to stop this slide that has been weekly for four months.
The last time Woods actually improved in the OWGR was April 12 when he jumped from 111th to 101st.
There remains a multitude of ways to digest exactly how far the greatest player of his generation has tumbled, but consider the happiness that seems to exist given Woods’ T-18 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. Back in the day a T-18 would leave him disgusted, but it’s actually his second-best finish since 2014, behind only the T-17 at this year’s Masters.
A tie for 17th is his best? Crazy.
Take four of his most productive seasons — 2000, 2004, 2007, 2008, for instance — and in those he played in a combined 63 PGA Tour tournaments, never missed a cut, and finished better than T-17 a whopping 56 times, 21 of them wins.
Then Tiger Woods would have laughed at a T-18, but given his current state of affairs, he’ll take it. Consider it part “of the process.”
What the T-18 didn’t do, however, was make a significant dent in his FedEx Cup standings. Woods improved just 12 spots, but at 185th he’s still miles from being within the top 125 and he’s not qualified for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational — a proverbial FedEx Cup and cash giveaway — for the first time ever.
So unless Woods has a rousing PGA Championship (and he’s been T-24 and T-28 in two trips to Whistling Straits) or possible Wyndham Championship (and he’s never played the event), he’ll miss the FedEx Cup playoffs for a second straight year and three of the past five.
Elsewhere in the OWGR, Quicken Loans winner Troy Merritt jumped from 180th to 99th (and earned himself a trip to Akron, Ohio, for the Bridgestone in lieu of a start in Reno, Nev.), while Rickie Fowler moved back into fifth, matching his best career position in the ranking.

Four new England caps for Home Internationals at Royal Portrush The new English champion, Joe Dean, and the runner-up, Alfie Plant, are included in England’s team for the Home Internationals at Royal Portrush Golf Club in County Antrim, Ireland, from 12-14 August.  It will be the first time Dean (pictured), from Yorkshire, and Plant, from Kent, have represented England at this level and they will be joined in the team by two more new caps, Jamie Bower and Dan Brown, who are also Yorkshire players.  The team will be completed by established internationals Tomasz Anderson of Hertfordshire, Ashley Chesters of Shropshire, Paul Kinnear of Lancashire, Jimmy Mullen of Devon, Ben Taylor of Surrey, Sean Towndrow of Lancashire and Ashton Turner of Lincolnshire.  England will seek to regain the Home Internationals title, which they last won at Ganton in Yorkshire in 2013.  The players:  Tomasz Anderson, 23, (Brocket Hall) has won seven times on the US college circuit as a student at Jacksonville State University. He scored five wins from six on his England debut in last year’s Home Internationals in Wales and is a member of the initial GB&I Walker Cup squad.  Jamie Bower, 22, (Meltham) was a semi-finalist at the English amateur championship and represented England in this year’s Costa Ballena quadrangular tournament. He’s had a series of top ten finishes this season including the French amateur, the Lytham Trophy and the Hampshire Salver.  Dan Brown, 20, (Bedale) won the recent Dutch Junior Open and, with it, a place in the KLM Open on the European Tour. He reached the last 16 in the English amateur, was sixth in the Lytham Trophy and is a member of the Walker Cup squad. Ashley Chesters, 25, (Hawkstone Park) tied 12th in The Open at St Andrews. This week he is defending his title in the European Amateur which he has won for the past two years. He was in England’s winning team at the European Nations Cup and is a member of the Walker Cup squad.  Joe Dean, 21, (Lindrick) won the English amateur championship last weekend, was runner-up in the Dutch Junior Open and has had top-four finishes in the Portuguese amateur and the Welsh open. He won the Lee Westwood Trophy last year and in 2013.  Paul Kinnear, 21, (Formby) played in The Open at St Andrews and was third in the Brabazon Trophy, where he was the leading English player. He reached the last 16 in the English amateur championship.   Jimmy Mullen, 21, (Royal North Devon) won the Welsh stroke play by nine shots and was third when defending his title in the Duncan Putter, also in Wales. He won all four of his games in this year’s international against Spain. He is in the Walker Cup squad. Alfie Plant, 23, (Sundridge Park) was runner-up in the English amateur. He has just represented England in the Chiberta Grand Prix and the Biarritz Cup in France where he was second and third respectively. Ben Taylor, 23, (Walton Heath) also qualified for The Open at St Andrews. He was seventh in the Brabazon Trophy and in qualifying for the Amateur Championship. He holed the winning putt to seal victory for Louisiana State University in the NCAA Championship on the US college circuit.  Sean Towndrow, 24 (Southport and Ainsdale) led the English challenge at the 2015 Amateur Championship, reaching the quarter finals. He helped England beat Spain in this year’s international and was England’s top scorer in this year’s Costa Ballena quadrangular tournament. Ashton Turner, 19 (Kenwick Park) has won the Darwin Salver for the second time and has represented GB and I as well as England.  Henry, McArthur second and third behind Kakko in Madeira Islands Open

Roope Kakko became the second Finnish winner in European Tour history as he carded a flawless nine under par final round 63 to be crowned 2015 Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI champion.

The 33 year old finished three shots clear of Scotland’s Scott Henry thanks to a stunning 17 under par weekend, following up an eight under third round with the best final round by a European Tour winner this season to set a new record for the lowest winning score in the tournament’s 22 year history at 24 under par.

It was Henry who came out of the blocks quickest at the sun-drenched Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra, moving two shots clear of his playing partners, Kakko and third round leader Pontus Widegren of Sweden, with three successive opening birdies.

Kakko cut a determined figure, however, and he picked up a trio of successive birdies from the fifth to reach the turn one shot ahead of the chasing pack.

The Espoo player chipped in at the par four tenth for eagle and followed that up with his fifth birdie of the day at the 11th, before picking up two more shots down the stretch to cruise to victory - putting his name alongside Mikko Ilonen on the list of Finnish European Tour champions in the process.

“I’m speechless,” said Kakko. “I came here to try and win this event and change my career so I’m over the moon to have done it.

“There was a lot of pressure but I had some pretty good thoughts in me, so I was able to handle it today. Sometimes it doesn’t go the way you plan it but it all went my way today.

“I told myself to just stick to my game plan and eventually I’m going to make a few birdies. I actually targeted a 67 today and I went a bit lower than that, so that was great.

“On Saturday I had a plan to just get into contention on Sunday and it worked. Scott and I played incredible golf today.

 “This is definitely the best moment of my career but I have to say that it really helped me to have won two years ago on the Challenge Tour in Oman. I was at a stage where I really needed to win and I did it, and that really helped me today, calmed me down when the pressure was on.”

The two-time Challenge Tour winner let out an almighty roar after sealing the victory with a par putt at the 18th and he did admit that the enormity of the occasion did take its toll during the round.

His caddie came to the rescue at the most opportune time, however, and now he is looking forward to returning to The European Tour a better and more experienced player.

“I was really nervous coming down the stretch on the last five holes,” he said. “I almost started crying with three holes to go – I was really getting emotional. But my caddie was very helpful, he gave me a couple of songs to sing and cracked a few jokes and that really helped me get into the moment.

“Of course, I’m playing on The European Tour now so that changes everything. I might take a bit of a break now, not play many events towards the end of the year, and really be ready to play alongside the best players in the world next season.”

Henry secured his second consecutive runner-up finish at this event, having been defeated by England’s Daniel Brooks in a play-off last year, after a six under par 66 earned him a 21 under total. It was the Glaswegian’s best finish of the season and moved him from 73rd in the Challenge Tour’s Road to Oman Rankings to sixth.

His compatriot Andrew McArthur recorded a third top three finish of the season, also carding a nine under par 63 to finish in outright third place on 18 under and moving to fourth place in the Road to Oman in the process.
Widegren, the third round leader, could only manage a level par round of 72 and he finished in a share of fourth place on 16 under, alongside his fellow countryman Sebastian Soderberg.

Tiago Cruz was the best of the Portuguese after a four under par final 68 round earned him a tied tenth place finish, a shot better than 2012 Madeira Islands Open champion Ricardo Santos and his fellow European Tour winner José-Filipe Lima.

Keith Pelley's first day as Chief Exec of 

European Tour

NEWS RELEASE
A new era in golf unfolds today – Monday August 3 – when Keith Pelley officially begins his tenure as Chief Executive of The European Tour.

The 51 year old Canadian will bring not only his extensive business pedigree across the Atlantic, but also his in-depth knowledge of professional sport and media, having worked across both industries for the past 30 years.

Latterly President of the Rogers Media conglomerate in Canada, Pelley was also President of Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games. Earlier in his career he was CEO of the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts, during which the team won the championship title in his first year of leadership.

“I said back in April, when news of my impending appointment was released, that I was proud and honoured to be joining The European Tour as its new Chief Executive and those feelings resonated once again when I walked through the front door for the first time officially this morning,” said Pelley.

“Over these past three months I have travelled and spoken to many people involved with The European Tour and I have been encouraged to find that the Tour already has a highly regarded reputation worldwide – naturally I will be seeking to build and expand on that in the years ahead.

“I have also seen how our European Tour members have excelled on the global stage in recent years and it is appropriate that my first two weeks at the helm sees them vie for a World Golf Championship title in Ohio and a Major Championship in Wisconsin. Naturally I wish them all well in that quest.

“Finally, I have spent the majority of my career working in the media and I was therefore delighted to meet many of the guys who cover our sport on a regular basis during my trip to Wentworth in May. As I said then, I look forward to getting to know them all and working together with them to help promote The European Tour in the future.”

Pelley will become only the fourth Chief Executive in the history of The European Tour, following in the footsteps of the Tour’s original founding father John Jacobs OBE (1971 – 1974), Ken Schofield CBE (1975 – 2004) and George O’Grady CBE (2005 – 2015).

David Williams, Chairman of the Board of Directors of The European Tour, said, “On behalf of the Board, I am delighted to welcome Keith officially as our new Chief Executive. His experience as a senior business leader and team builder, his extensive media and broadcast background and his interest in sport all fit perfectly with our agenda moving forward.

“As he has seen for himself already first hand, this is an exciting time for The European Tour. We have some of the best players in the world alongside some of the most exciting tournaments and I know Keith will build on the framework put in place by George O’Grady over the past ten years.”
