New course record as English amateur qualifying is completed
Sussex
golfer David Wicks set a new course record in the rain as qualifying
for the match play stage of the English amateur championship was finally
completed today at The Alwoodley and Pannal Golf Clubs in Yorkshire.
Play was
suspended yesterday when torrential rain flooded both courses and over
100 competitors returned today to complete their first round, which was
used to decide the qualifiers. The leading 32 players, plus ties, from
each course went through to the knockout.Wicks (Sedlescombe) led the qualifiers at The Alwoodley after returning to complete a four-under par 67 which is a new record following changes to the course. He had played through the worst of yesterday’s weather and was four-under when play was called off, having just hit his tee shot on the 13th into a bunker. He had all night to contemplate his shot from the wet sand, but he returned to complete his bogey-free round. “I tried not to think about it overnight, tried to chill out, speak to friends, but I knew I was in a pretty good position,” said the 21-year-old (Image © Leaderboard Photography).
Wicks
is a student in the USA, having completed two years at junior college
in Texas where he has won seven times and was ranked number one
nationally in his first year and number two in his second. He’s now
transferred to Jacksonville University in Florida. “The structure there
has helped me a lot,” he commented.
At
Pannal, Yorkshire’s Jamie Bower (Meltham) secured a share of fourth
place when he completed a five-under par 67 with two pars when play
resumed. “I’d hit my tee shot to the middle of the green on the 17th and
I came back today and two-putted,” he said.
He
described yesterday’s weather as horrendous, but was able to take a
relaxed attitude to the suspension in play. “I was in a good position so
I felt comfortable, but if I’d had a worse score I would have been
anxious. It was still raining today but not as heavy.”
Bower
leads 15 Yorkshiremen into the match play stages, including defending
champion Nick Marsh (Huddersfield). Others are Ben Firth (Moortown),
David Houlding (Moortown), Dan Wasteney (Bondhay), Martin Brown (Pike
Hills), Christopher Handy (South Moor), Dan Brown (Bedale), Jack Lampkin
(Ilkley), Joe Dean (Lindrick), Damon Coulson (Fulford), Steven Robins
(Hull), James Walker (Oaks), Nick Poppleton (Wath) and Ben Brewster
(Bawtry).
The
cut for qualifying at Pannal fell on one-under par and a total of 34
players went through. At Alwoodley the cut was on three-over par and 37
players qualified.
The
match play will all take place at The Awoodley where 14 players will be
involved in a preliminary round, starting at 7.30am tomorrow. The first
round begins at 8.45am.

Top seed Grant Forrest beats Barrie Edmond to reach last 32
Fairstone Scottish Amateur Championship
Muirfield, East Lothian
REPORT BY ED HODGE of SGU

The local lad, attached to the Craigielaw club, eased past Bon Accord’s Barrie Edmond, the Aberdeen Links champion, 3 and 2 to reach the fourth round, alongside a number of other in-form players.
Forrest won the crown at Royal Dornoch in 2012 and has built on that success in recent years, including reaching the final of The Amateur Championship last month and helping Scotland become European Team champions a matter of days ago.

Lawrie gets a buzz from running his own
tournament as a European Tour attraction
Lawrie,
who was present alongside Saltire Energy Chief Executive Mike Loggie at
the live draw on Tuesday afternoon to determine the opening 32 matches
of the straight knock-out competition, is looking forward to hosting his
own event in his homeland.
“I
just can’t wait to get going,” said Lawrie. “It’s shaping up to be a
great week and all the players I have spoken to are excited about
playing match play over a great links course. That, in my opinion, is
the truest form of the game and I think it’s a nice refreshing change
for the tour pros to come to Scotland and play man against man in a
straight knock out.
“I
have a very tough first round match against Romain, who is one of those
young players who has and continues to build a very good reputation on
tour. I actually played the final round with him when I won at
Gleneagles in 2012 and he is a great kid and a very good player.
“There
are some great first round matches with a lot of experienced players
taking on the new generation of Tour players, so hopefully the old boys
can take a few scalps.”
Among
the highlighted first round matches are second seed, and Scotland’s
highest ranked player, Marc Warren taking on Richard Bland, while
Aberdeen’s other hometown hero Richie Ramsay – the course record holder
at Murcar with an eight under par 62 – will face India’s Shiv Kapur.
Former
European Number One and Ryder Cup player Robert Karlsson takes on
Australian Marcus Fraser, while the tournament’s Number One seed,
in-form Englishman James Morrison, will open his bid for the £1 million
title against Swede Pelle Edberg.
American
legend John Daly joins Lawrie as the only other Major Champion in the
field at Murcar this week and will face Spain’s Jorge Campillo in round
one, while Lawrie’s 2012 Ryder team mate Nicolas Colsaerts takes on
Frenchman Grégory Bourdy
Lawrie
is hoping the chance to see some of the game’s greats, as well as many
of its future stars, will lure a great crowd to Murcar over the coming
week.“I think this week and this tournament gives the people of Aberdeen first and foremost the chance to come along to the golf and see some amazing players up close and personal. “When we were looking at the ticket pricing, myself and Mike (Loggie) were very keen to keep the prices down and have managed to do that. It’s £15 a day from Thursday and that is a cracking price to pay to see some world class golfers playing a great links course. Hopefully the local community will continue their amazing support of golf and come along and see some great players doing their thing.”
