EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
American Marco Dawson produced a stunning back nine fightback to storm to victory in The Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex, overcoming European Ryder Cup legends Bernhard Langer and Colin Montgomerie at Sunningdale.

The 51 year old, whose best finish in 413 events on the US PGA Tour was runner up in the 1995 Greater Milwaukee Open, sank a dramatic and decisive 18ft birdie putt on the last hole for a round of six-under 64 to finish one shot clear of defending champion Langer, who also closed with a 64, while Montgomerie was a further two shots back.

It proved to be a fascinating final round with Montgomerie seemingly in control for much of the afternoon following an impressive four under par front nine of 31.

The 2010 European Ryder Cup captain moved three shots clear of Dawson on the tenth hole after Dawson made his third bogey of the round immediately after the turn following an outward nine of 33, which included an eagle on the ninth.

But fortune swung in Dawson’s favour when Montgomerie made back-to-back bogeys on the 11th and 12th holes and the American birdied both holes.

That reignited his title bid and he moved to the top of the leaderboard in spectacular fashion courtesy of the second eagle of his round on the 14th hole, after Langer had previously moved serenely into pole position with five birdies in his opening 12 holes.

It then came down to a battle between those two over the closing holes, and Dawson’s long birdie putt on the last meant that when Langer holed his own ten foot birdie putt on the 18th hole, it was only to reduce the margin of victory to a single shot.

Langer, therefore, narrowly missed out on a record-equalling third Senior Open title, following his dominant 13 shot victory at Royal Porthcawl last year, but for Dawson it was an emotional maiden Senior Major Championship, after only capturing his first title on the US Champions Tour in March.

“This is unbelievable,” said Dawson, who finished 16 under par for the Championship. “I can't tell you how many hours I put in on the range, and I've had two back surgeries to prove it. I've spent a lot of time on the range and on the putting green over the years, and you know, it's a little later than most of the guys, but it came true.”

“I had a lot of fun last year. I wasn't expecting a lot but things started to happen and I started getting more and more confident. And then I won earlier this year, which gave me a lot of confidence through the rest of the season.
"And when I got to this point two days ago, and I had a good first round and a good second, I thought, okay, maybe this is going to happen again. I said we'll just keep on making the swings and try and make the putts. That's what it comes down to. I just made one more putt than Bernhard.”
Dawson’s victory also means he qualifies for next year’s Open Championship at Royal Troon, which will be his first appearance in golf’s oldest Major.

“Isn't that nice?” he said “So I'll be here two weeks next year. Great. I love that. I love the way the game is played over here. I love that you can play it on the ground, in the air. There's so many options, so many more options than we have in the States.

“Most of the play over there is in the air. Unfortunately it was wet this week. The first two days were very bouncy and you see a lot of balls run a lot. It's a lot of fun playing golf like that.”

Langer continued his remarkable record in the Senior Open, finishing runner up for the second time after losing a play-off to Mark Wiebe in 2013, having finished no worse than 12th in eight appearances.

“It was an exciting week,” said the two-time Masters Champion. “It's very befitting of the venue and the tournament. We had a great leaderboard, lots of good players up there, and a few lead changes as the day went by.

Marco just played phenomenally. Things went for him; he holed a bunker shot and he made two eagles, and leapfrogged both Monty and I. And he made an amazing put on 18 to make sure I couldn't tie him.
The three of us were always fairly close together and it just came down to who plays the last, eight or ten holes the best, and Marco did that.”

Montgomerie birdied the 14th hole but could just not make any putts on the closing four holes to close the gap on Dawson, as his bid for a fourth Senior Major title ultimately ran out of steam. His round of 67 and 13 under par total meant he had to settle for third place, having finished a distant runner-up to Langer in Wales last year.

Spaniard Miguel Angel Jiménez produced some fireworks of his own with an eagle on the 14th hole, but like Montgomerie that was his final gain of the round and his closing round of 67 left him five shots back on 11 under par in fourth place.

Kiwi Ryan Fox leads all the way for first

Challenge win

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Ryan Fox held off a determined challenge from home favourite Thomas Linard to capture a wire-to-wire maiden victory on the European Challenge Tour in Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge in France.
Leading by three shots at the start of the final round, Fox birdied the closing hole for a two over par round of 73 to finish on 14 under par, a shot clear of Linard, who pushed him all the way with a level par round of 71.
New Zealander Fox, the son of All Blacks rugby legend Grant Fox, battled to keep his place at the top of the leaderboard on the front nine, carding two birdies and two bogeys, along with a double bogey on the sixth hole.
Linard, meanwhile, posted three birdies in five holes, as well as two bogeys, to share the lead at the turn, but while both players carded two birdies on the back nine after a brief delay due to heavy rain, Linard’s three bogeys compared to Fox’s two proved decisive.
“It was a tough day,” said Fox. “Conditions were pretty awful through the middle of the round with the rain and the wind. It was a great battle down the stretch with Thomas. We had four or five holes where we stood tied for the lead. He made some unbelievable shots and I guess it made it a little easier for myself to get forward to stay one in front.
“There are some tough holes out there, and I missed a couple of greens, and then got up and down, but it doesn’t matter now, I guess. I’m just happy.
Fox has made an impressive start to his Challenge Tour career with two top ten finishes from three appearances before qualifying for The Open Championship and making the cut at St Andrews last week.
He is the first Kiwi to win on the Challenge Tour since Gareth Paddison back in 2007, a victory which coincidentally also came on French soil.
“This trip is my first time to Europe, and I have played well,” said the 28 year old. “France was my dad’s favourite place to tour when he was playing with the All Blacks. I think it’s the same for me. It’s my favourite place in the world at the moment.”
Linard, a winner last year on the Challenge Tour, finished runner up on home soil last month in the Najeti Open Presented by Neuflize OBC, and he had to settle for the same position again.
“I’m know ready to win a tournament so if it’s not this one, it will be another,” he said. “I’ll be patient.
“I had two bad shots on 15 and 16 and missed some short putts maybe because I wasn’t patient, and it made me angry. I tried to take him on but he played better than I did today, and maybe made less mistakes.
“There were a lot of people supporting me and it was really nice. I wish there was more tournaments in France because of this support, and sometimes we dare to do certain shots just because of this.”
Sweden’s Steven Jeppesen and American Connor Arendell shared fourth place five shots back on nine under par after both players signed for rounds of 73.

Danny Willett wins Omega European Masters

by one from Matt Fitzpatrick
  European Tour Communications

Danny Willett held off stiff competition from fellow Englishmen Matt Fitzpatrick and Tyrrell Hatton to win the Omega European Masters and clinch his third European Tour title.

The overnight co-leader carded a bogey-free round of 65 on Sunday to finish the tournament on 17 under par, one shot ahead of former US Amateur Champion Fitzpatrick, with Tyrrell Hatton one shot further back on 15 under.

Fitzpatrick opened his final round with a bogey at the par four first, before firing four birdies in his next eight holes to hold a one shot lead at the turn.

But a bogey at the 11th hole saw the 20 year old slip back to 14 under par alongside Willett, who fired three consecutive birdies from the 13th to put himself in the driving seat. The Sheffield native then finished his round with three straight pars to claim his second title of the campaign, following his win in the season-opening Nedbank Golf Challenge.

Victory moved Willett to second in The Race to Dubai behind leader Rory McIlroy, and could well see him climb into the top 25 of the Official Golf World Ranking.

The lowest score of the day went to Hatton, who carded an eagle and six birdies on his way to an eight under par 62.

That was good enough for third place, one ahead of his playing partner Pelle Edberg, who shot a round of 63.

World Number Ten Sergio Garcia, appearing at Crans-sur-Sierre for the first time in nine years, closed with a rouind of 64 to climb to seventh place.

 Key quotes

Danny Willett

“It was a great day. Yesterday was a bit disappointing, but today I played some really good golf. Matt [Fitzpatrick] was snapping at my heels all day, so I’m delighted to get the job done.
“He played some great golf and really kept the pressure on me. But it probably made it a bit easier to be honest, because it meant I couldn’t lose concentration even for a minute. With a bigger lead you can take your foot off the gas a bit, but today I knew I had to keep attacking and committing fully to shots, and luckily enough it turned out well in the end.

“Winning is always tough, and the heart rate on 18 was pretty high. Having a lag putt is almost trickier than trying to hole one sometimes, so I was very relieved to see it stop a foot or two from the hole.

“The season has been very, very good. Two wins and good performances in Majors and World Golf Championships is more than I could’ve hoped for really, but I’ve worked really hard so it’s nice to get the rewards for it.”

Matt Fitzpatrick

“I played to win but Danny just went one better, so you have to take your hat off to him. I don’t have any regrets whatsoever, and that’s all you can ask of yourself. I gave it everything, but Danny was very impressive. There were a couple of turning points which decided it, but I matched him birdie for birdie for the most part. I know Danny very well, he’s also from Sheffield so I’m very pleased for him.

“Overall, I’m really pleased with the week. It’s been building for a few weeks now, so hopefully I can get over the line at some stage. It’s still only my first season on Tour and I’m only 20, so I’m still learning every week. Experiences like today’s will be invaluable in the future.”

Tyrrell Hatton

“I was tied third last year and third on my own this year, so at least it’s a slight improvement! Again, I’m really happy. It’s my lowest score on The European Tour, so even though I’ve come up just short I can’t be disappointed. To do it on a Sunday at a place like Crans is very special, so I’ll enjoy this one for a while.

“Hopefully the first win is just round the corner. I’ve been up there with a chance of winning a few times now, so I’m getting ever closer and hopefully one of these days the luck will go with me and I’ll manage to finish the job off.
With This Win
•             His third European Tour International Schedule victory in his 180th European Tour event.
 •             Moves to 2,548,439 points in The Race to Dubai.
 •             Could move into the top 25 of the Official World Golf Ranking, from 32nd.

 •             His second victory of the 2015 European Tour season, after winning the opening event, the Nedbank Golf Challenge.

 •             Becomes the first time during his European Tour career he has recorded multiple European Tour victories in the same season.

Canadian Hearn leads Canadian Open

Canada’s David Hearn posted a 4-under 68 Saturday to take a two-shot lead into final round of the RBC Canadian Open. Here’s where things stand through 54 holes at Glen Abbey Golf Club.
Leaderboard: Hearn (-15), Jason Day (-13), Bubba Watson (-13), Brooks Koepka (-12), Michael Putnam (-12)
What it means: Hearn made five birdies before dropping his first shot since Thursday when he failed to get up and down from a greenside trap at US PGA Tour victory after losing twice in a playoff, first at the 2013 John Deere Classic to Jordan Spieth and second at last month’s Greenbrier Classic to Danny Lee. With a victory, Hearn would become the first Canadian to win his national open since Pat Fletcher in 1954.
Round of the day: Playing his first event as a professional, former world No 1 amateur Ollie Schneiderjans made eight birdies and two bogeys en route to a 6-under 66. The 22-year-old former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket actually found himself outside the cut line late Friday before rallying to make the weekend. He’s now tied for 11th at 10 under.
Best of the rest: Six players – Camilo Villegas, Roberto Castro, Adam Hadwin, Adam Svensson, Brian Davis and Derek Fathauer - turned in 5-under 67s, but the best stretch of golf belonged to Day, who birdied six of his final seven holes after starting the back nine bogey-double bogey. A third-round 69 has him two back.
Biggest disappointment: Overnight leader Chad Campbell made one bogey and eight pars on the front nine and came totally undone with a triple bogey on the par-4 11th. His lone birdie of the day, coming at the par-5 16th, got him into the clubhouse in 3-over 75. He sits four back of Hearn.
Storyline to watch heading into Sunday: The eyes of a nation will be on Hearn, but two of the top 10 players in the world, Day and Watson, sit just two back, while world No. 23 Brooks Koepka lurks three back. All three are in search of their second win of 2015.
