Birdie blitz by Monty before fading light stops

play in Senior Open at Sunningdale

 FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Colin Montgomerie produced a birdie blitz at the start of his third round to move into a share of the lead with Marco Dawson in The Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex before fading light stopped play at Sunningdale Golf Club.
After completing his weather-affected second round by birdieing the 14th hole on Saturday morning for a second consecutive round of 67, a well-rested Montgomerie was quick out of the blocks when he began his third round nine hours later.

Starting two shots behind pacesetter Dawson, Montgomerie immediately rattled off three birdies in a row to join the Americanat the top of the leaderboard, with Dawson also birdieing the opening hole.

The pair then both birdied the ninth hole before play was abandoned for the day at 8.56pm, meaning they will have to complete the back nine when the third round resumes at 8am, with the final round scheduled to begin at 11.30am.

Montgomerie is bidding to add the Senior Open crown to the three Senior Major Championships he has already won since turning 50 - two US Senior PGA Championships and the 2014 US Senior Open.

“I was four under for the front nine and I started off well, birdie, birdie, birdie and kept it going, so I  look forward to tomorrow,” said Montgomerie. “It was exactly what I wanted.”

Dawson claimed his first win on the US Champions Tour in March, and after playing 27 holes on Saturday, carding a second round of 67 in the morning, he was satisfied with his day’s work.
“I was just trying to stay energised,” said Dawson. “It was a long day. And now it's going to be even longer because we are going to have to go for a quick dinner and have to get up early, finish our second nine and go back out and play another 18. This is just a survival test now. It's been fun.

“It was a nice to finish on the birdie there, so that makes you feel a lot better going into the next nine holes, so the strategy may be a little bit different.”
The biggest mover of the day was Ireland’s Philip Walton, who followed a second round of 67 with seven birdies and a bogey in the 17 holes he completed in round three to move to eight under par. He is just two shots back with one hole to complete, while Fred Couples, the 2012 Senior Open Champion, is also on that mark through 11 holes following birdies on the first and ninth holes.
Spaniard Miguel Angel Jiménez began his third round with an eagle on the first hole, but gave one shot back with a bogey on the seventh hole, and is a three strokes behind on seven under par through 10 holes.

He is joined in a share of fifth place by defending champion Bernhard Langer, who was level par for his round through nine holes after a birdie on the first and a bogey on the fourth hole. American Bart Bryant and Australian Peter Fowler are also seven under par for the Championship through 11 and ten holes respectively.
One player to complete all 18 holes was American Tom Watson, who made his sixth birdie of the day on the last hole to sign for a round of 66, just one shot more than his age. The three-time Senior Open Champion is just outside the top ten on five under par.

Fitzpatrick, Willett share Omega Masters lead

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS

English pair Matt Fitzpatrick and Danny Willett go into the final round of the Omega European Masters neck and neck on 12 under par after a rollercoaster third day at Golf Club Crans-sur-Sierre.
The two former amateur stars – Willett was the top amateur in Europe, while Fitzpatrick was World Number One in the unpaid ranks – had fluctuating fortunes as the wind got up in the third round, but both find themselves two shots ahead of Raphaël Jacquelin, who signed for a 68 despite a triple bogey seven at the fourth.
Willett started the day with a one shot lead, but struggled on the front nine and had two bogeys and a double bogey in his first four holes, the latter coming when he hit his approach out of bounds on the fourth.
Two further bogeys after the turn were eradicated with a 30 foot eagle on the 15th, but a one over par 71 saw the 27 year old, currently riding high at third on The Race to Dubai, leave the door ajar for the chasing pack.
It was former US Amateur Champion Fitzpatrick who took advantage, the 20 year old coming home in 30 for a sparkling 64.
A 20 footer on the 13th was followed by gains from closer range on the 14th and 15th, before another effort from 20 feet at the 17th completed Fitzpatrick’s scoring as he chases a maiden European Tour title.
Defending champion David Lipsky is in with a chance of emulating the achievements of the late, great Seve Ballesteros, the last man to win the tournament in back-to-back seasons.
Despite a closing bogey, Lipsky sits just three shots off the lead on nine under par.
Matt Fitzpatrick
“I didn’t get off to the best of starts, with a bogey at the first. At that point, 74 was looking much more likely than 64. But I feel like I’ve been playing well for a while now, so it’s been coming but 65-64 yesterday and today is still good going.
“I made a couple of good up and downs to save par at the start of the round, which just helps keep the momentum going. Then I got going with the birdie on four, and carried it on from there. After that, the round just built and built.”
Danny Willett
“It wasn’t the best of days, and the round could’ve got away from me early doors. So it was good to hang tough and finish off the round quite nicely. Hopefully that’s my one bad round out the way.
“Tomorrow, it really depends on the weather. If we get another day like today, not too many people are going to go low out there. So we’ll just have to wait and see. Hopefully I can commit to a few more shots than I did today.”

 Flying Fox furthers French form

 EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
New Zealand’s Ryan Fox birdied the closing hole to take a three- shot lead into the final round of the Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge in France, as he maintained his impressive bid for a maiden European Challenge Tour title in just his fourth appearance.
The 28 year old has led for the duration of the tournament at Golf PGA France du Vaudreuil, following a course record 62 on Thursday and second round of 67 with a three under par third round of 68, for a 16 under par total.
An eventful front nine of 33 included two birdies, two bogeys and an eagle on the par five eighth hole, before a further birdie on the 13th hole was followed by a bogey on the 14th. He finished his round on a high, however, with a closing birdie to extend his one shot overnight advantage to three, with Frenchman Thomas Linard his nearest rival on 13 under par following a round of 69.
Fox, who is the son of former All Blacks rugby union legend Grant Fox, started his Challenge Tour career with two top ten finishes before qualifying for The Open Championship and making the cut at St Andrews last week.
He is now in pole position to become the first Kiwi to win on the Challenge Tour since Gareth Paddison back in 2007, a victory which also came on French soil.
“Today the breeze was a lot stronger than it has been on the last couple days, so I’m very happy to shoot three under,” said Fox. “I probably played better than I did yesterday, but I just made a couple of mistakes in club selections and made some bogeys, but the rest of the day was really, really good.
“There was a big crowd in front following Thomas, so I imagine that tomorrow they will be there and pulling for him over me. But anyway, France is treating me very well and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”
Linard, a winner last year on the Challenge Tour, finished runner up on home soil last month in the Najeti Open Presented by Neuflize OBC, and he will be hoping to go one better by reeling in Fox after three birdies – including one on the last hole – and one bogey in his round of 69.
“I made a beginner’s mistake on the 17th - I raised my head while putting,” said Linard. “My ball slid on the right side and I bogeyed the hole. But I’m happy because I birdied right after on the 18th. I could even have done better because I had a really nice shot with my iron but the slope made my ball roll to the rough on the side.
“I have three shots to recover tomorrow and it is something that I can manage. The last time I won in the Czech Republic, I was two shots behind and I was eight under to win by two.”
American Connor Arendell, who is attempting to follow in the footsteps of his compatriot, 2013 champion Brinson Paolini, is a further shot back on 12 under par after a round of 72, alongside Sweden’s Stephen Jeppesen, who signed for a round of 68.
