Kiwi Fox shows his polish to keep French

Challenge lead

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Ryan Fox continued his impressive form on European soil as the New Zealander maintained his lead at Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge in France, following up his stunning opening 62 with a four under par 67 to remain one shot clear of the chasing pack.
The son of former All Blacks rugby legend Grant, Fox set a new course record at Golf PGA France du Vaudreuil on day one and he built on that strong start to keep his chase for a maiden Challenge Tour title - in just his fourth start – well on track.
The 28 year old made the perfect start to his second round with a birdie at the first hole but two further birdies at the fourth and seventh holes were offset by bogeys at the sixth and eight, meaning he reached the turn in one under.
He made gains though at the 12th, 16th and 17th to stay on top on 13 under par and keep alive his hopes of becoming the first Kiwi winner on the Challenge Tour since Gareth Paddison back in 2007 – coincidentally that victory came on French soil.
“It was a good day today,” said Fox, who started his Challenge Tour career with two top ten finishes before qualifying for The Open Championship and making the cut at St Andrews last week.
“It wasn’t quite as nice as yesterday but it was a really good round of golf. I had a couple of bad shots on the front nine where I got penalized and one bad shot on the back nine, but the rest was really good.
“I got lucky on 15. I almost hit it out of bounds and had to chip out but made my up-and-down. I also got lucky on the ninth. I hit it just a little too far right off the tee and I was fortunate to have a second shot. The rest of the round was really solid though.”

The Auckland player had been lighting up the Australasian Tour before taking his first steps on European soil when he arrived for the SSE Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts last month.
He notched up two victories in the last 12 months back in his home continent, so he knows all about the pressure of battling for out for victory at the weekend.
“It’s not the first time that I’ve been leading from the first round,” he said. “It’s happened a couple of times in Australia and New Zealand but it’s definitively the first time over here. It’s a good position to be and as it’s my last event in Europe before going back home, I hope I finish strong.”
Connor Arendell, meanwhile, is the closest challenger as the Floridian attempts to make it two American winners of this event in three years, following in the footsteps of 2013 champion Brinson Paolini.
The 25 year old has been on solid form this year, missing just one cut in seven events, but his best result of the season came in his last start at the D+D REAL Slovakia Challenge, courtesy of a tied 14th finish, so he is in buoyant mood.
“It’s my second 65 of the week,” said Arendell after his seven under round moved him to a 12 under total. “So it was pretty much the same as yesterday - I made a lot of fairways and greens, although it was windier. I had five birdies in a row, so that kept me going and I just played solid after that and made some putts.
“This weekend I’ll hopefully keep playing well and just do my best. Being in second position takes a lot of pressure off you and it’s always nice to have somebody you can chase, so it’ll be fun.”
Thomas Linard, a winner last year on the Challenge Tour, is a shot further back on 11 under par after signing for a seven under 64, while 2015 Barclays Kenya Open champion Haydn Porteous is in outright fourth place on nine under after a second round 65.

Moore celebrates five-shot Carris Trophy victory
What a difference a year makes. Twelve months ago Bradley Moore lost a play-off for the Carris Trophy. Today he’s celebrating a five shot victory in the championship at Little Aston Golf Club.
He completed the English boys’ open stroke play championship on eight-under par, signing off with a two-over par 74 – compiled in a continuous downpour – and was five clear of the runner-up, John Axelsen of Denmark.
Sharing third place on level par were Portugal-based Nathan Brader and Jonathan Goth-Rasmussen, who soared up the leaderboard with a closing 67, the low round of the day. Also in the prizes were fifth placed John Gough (Stoke Park) and Harry Hall (West Cornwall) who was sixth.
Last year, Bradley Moore (Kedleston Park) lost this title to a good friend, which eased the disappointment, but the championship was high on his hit list for 2015. “I definitely wanted to come here and show I could win,” he said.
“It also means a lot because it’s my last year in boys’ golf and I wanted to get a big boys’ win,” added Moore (Image © Leaderboard Photography).
He led from start to finish, opening with rounds of 69, 72 and yesterday’s course record 65 which gave him a lead of seven shots going in to the final round. “It was that round which gave me the opportunity,” he said.
“I didn’t hit the ball great today, I don’t know why, it was just one of those days, but I managed to get it round in a winning score.”
John Axelsen, who won last year’s U16 McGregor Trophy, is a formidable player, and Moore was well aware that he might charge at him. “John is capable of going low if the putts drop for him,” he said.
The Danish player had some impressive shots, for example driving the 317-yard fourth hole, and he twice narrowed the gap to four shots. But each time Moore regained the momentum, helped by birdies on the ninth and 13th – both short holes.
He also demonstrated some excellent short game skills, with some crucial up and downs, including two from bunkers.
“This gives me confidence going into the English amateur next week, then the European amateur and then straight to the British boys,” said Moore as he outlined his busy schedule.
The 17-year-old has been England’s top boy golfer for the past two years and, as well as adding the Carris Trophy to his CV, he also won the Malcolm Reid Salver for the best aggregate score in this championship and in the Peter McEvoy Trophy, in which he was runner-up.
The U16 trophy, the Hazards Salver, was shared by England’s Jake Benson (Beeston Fields), Italy's Adalberto Montini and Sweden’s Hugo Townsend, who all finished on six-over par.
Benson, 16, was two behind at the start of the final round and scored one-over 73 to tie, achieving his target for the week. Crucially, he got up and down from a fairway bunker on the 18th and he said: “I knew I needed to do it to have a chance.”

Montgomerie makes his move before Senior

Open suspension at very wet Sunningdale

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Colin Montgomerie moved into a share of the lead in The Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex at Sunningdale Golf Club before persistent heavy rain curtailed play in the second round.
The Scot, bidding for his fourth Senior Major Championship and first on British soil, completed 12 holes before the suspension, twice leading outright on six under par before bogeys on the tenth and 12th holes, either side of a birdie on the 11th, pushed him back to five under par, alongside seven other players.
With constant rainfall throughout the morning, play was suspended at 1pm with the greens on the Old Course waterlogged. Further heavy rain after the suspension, and a worsening forecast, meant the decision was then taken at 3pm that the players would not return to the course, with 16mm of rainfall already measured at that point.
It means the second round will resume at 8am on Saturday morning, followed by a two-tee start for round three upon its conclusion.
David Williams, Championship Director, said: “We were looking at the weather forecast and giving it a little bit of a chance but it did not improve and was deteriorating for the afternoon. The course was getting more and more flooded, and with the forecast, there was no chance of improving whatsoever to get out again.
“The plan is to finish round two tomorrow and, all going well, start round three on a two-tee start. We will have probably an hour or so play left of round three tomorrow, and we'll finish that up on Sunday morning. Then the plan is to go three-balls off one tee and get back on track and finish when we're meant to.”
Montgomerie will have six holes to complete when the play resumes on Saturday, having moved up the leaderboard to join the cluster of pacesetters.
The 2010 European Ryder Cup Captain birdied the par five first for the second day in succession, and followed it up with another at the third.
A delightful close approach to the fifth meant he gained another shot, and his fourth birdie came on the 11th, but that was sandwiched in between those two bogeys, meaning he left the course two under par for the round.
Seven other players also lie on five under par, including defending champion Bernhard Langer and Spaniard Miguel Angel Jiménez, though only one of them, American Bart Bryant, has started his second round, parring the first two holes before the rain made the saturated greens unplayable.
China’s Lianwei Zhang, who had been part of the record eight-way tie for the lead after the first round, dropped to four under par. He birdied the first hole to take the outright lead but followed it with a costly double bogey at the second, then mixed two more birdies with two bogeys to be one over par for the round through nine holes.
Former Masters Champion Ian Woosnam looked to be making the most significant move, eagling the first on his way to a front nine of 31, to move to four under par for his round and five under par overall.
Like Montgomerie, however, the Welshman bogeyed both the tenth and the 12th holes to drop back to three under par.
Of those to complete their rounds, America’s Gary Rusnak and Uruguay’s Cesar Monasterio share the clubhouse lead on two under par, with Steve Jones among those one shot further back, having now played the first hole in five under par through two rounds after a second round eagle followed his first round albatros

Danny Willett grabs Omega Masters lead before

storm halts play at Crans-sure-Sierre

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS

Danny Willett’s purple patch continued in the Omega European Masters as the Englishman grabbed the clubhouse lead before thunderstorms brought the second round to a premature close.
Before the klaxons sounded at 5.52pm to herald the end of play, Willett lit up Golf Club Crans-sur-Sierre with an electrifying display of his own, notching nine birdies in a near-faultless round of 62 to move to the head of affairs on 13 under par.
That impressive total gave Willett – currently third in The Race to Dubai – a one shot lead at the midway stage of the €2.7 million tournament. Second place is currently shared by the Korean duo of Seukhyun Baek and YE Yang, Asia’s first Major Champion, who both shot rounds of 63 to move to 12 under par.
Swedish amateur sensation Marcus Kinhult, who recently co-led the Nordea Masters after two days, again showed maturity beyond his tender years to compile a round of 66 for a nine under par total.
Further down the leaderboard, World Number 18 Patrick Reed will enter the weekend on four under par, whilst his Ryder Cup opponent Lee Westwood is almost certain to make the cut on three under; but Spaniard Sergio Garcia faces an anxious wait to see if his one under par aggregate total will be good enough.
Twelve groups were unable to complete their rounds before the thunderstorms engulfed Crans Montana, in the Swiss Alps, meaning they will have to return to the course at 7.30am on Saturday morning.

Key quotes
Willett

“It was very, very good, right from the get-go. I hit it well on the range this morning, got into a nice rhythm early doors and carried it through the whole round. Every part of my game felt pretty good today, I controlled my ball really well all day and my putter stayed hot for the whole day.
“I’m better mentally now than I was. Over these last two weeks especially, I haven’t been getting too far ahead of myself, and every time I’ve got in trouble I’ve just taken my medicine and moved onto the next. I didn’t actually hit the ball that well for the last two holes, but still managed to make par; whereas before, I might’ve got annoyed with myself and dropped a shot or two.”
Yang
“The conditions were ideal this morning and my putting was good as well, so I’m very happy.
“I was really inexperienced the first time I played here in 2007, but my caddie help a lot this week. I managed to judge the ball distance better this year, as the ball flies ten per cent further due to the altitude.
“It’s a beautiful place, with the mountains and scenery. I love it.”

Baek
“I’m really happy, as I’ve never done well here before. I like this golf course, and it’s good that I’m beginning to play well here. I feel like my form is slowly returning.
“In the past, I’ve tendde to put lots of pressure on myself, especially when I’m in contention. But I’ve learnt to relax."

Double bogey on 17 KOs McColl hopes
Andrew Marshall won the Wealth Design Invitational with a 54-hole score of 14 under par after an eventful back nine in the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour event at Hawkstone Park Golf Club in Shropshire.

Marshall, pictured right, carded a three-under-par final-round 68. However, he looked to have blown his chance when he made a double bogey at the 12th, having just returned to contention with an eagle at 10 and a birdie at the 11th
However, as other players also blundered he regained his focus to make a run of three consecutive birdies on 14, 15 and 16. By the time he was on 18 he had a two-stroke lead at 14 under, which he maintained with a par at the last.

Former Stirling student David Booth (Rotherham), a past winner of the Scottish youths championship, finished second on 12 under par after a final-round 67, four under par on the Championship Course
Paul Howard (Southport and Ainsdale) claimed third place on -11.

Overnight leader Daniel Gavins (Walton Driving Range) never recovered from a triple bogey at the first and finished five shots back in a tie for fourth on nine under.

Gavins’ early mishap left Darren Wright (Golf at Goodwood) at the top of the leaderboard after he opened with birdies at 1 and 3. Hot on his heels were Marshall and Howard. However, within the space of five minutes the top ten had been turned on its head.

Marshall and Howard both double bogeyed the 12th and on the next hole Wright made triple.
Meanwhile Jordan McColl (Kingsbarns Pro Academy) and Booth had both eagled 14, leaving them in a share of the lead on -12 with the tournament now wide open.

However, McColl made a double bogey on 17 and bogey at 18 and also finished tied fourth on nine under and Booth bogeyed the last to finish second despite briefly leading on -13 after a birdie at the 16th.

“I am delighted to win,” said Marshall, who intends to play most of the remaining HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour events this season.

“I missed every chance I had on the front nine but had an eagle at the 10th and all of a sudden I had a birdie at 11 and I felt that I was back in it. Then I slipped on my tee shot at 12, it is wet and I ended up in the bunker but no big deal. There was a bit of a lip, I nailed it into the lip and it plugged and all of a sudden I am looking at making six.

“I chopped it out, played a good wedge in and it horseshoed from six feet. It couldn’t have gone worse on that hole.

“I went from king of the hill to that and I found a bunker at the next as well; my head had come off a bit. I knew I had a chance at 14 and made birdie. On the 15th green I looked at the scoreboard and saw that guys hadn’t pulled away so I knew if I made birdie I was back in it. I did, and I had another birdie at the next hole.”

As well as his £10,000 winner’s cheque Marshall takes home a brand new Motocaddy trolley with lithium battery, a Bushnell Tour X range finder, Bolle sunglasses and £500 to spend at HotelPlanner.com.

Highlights of the Wealth Design Invitational will be broadcast on Sky Sports at 8pm on Tuesday, August 4.

The HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour will now move to Chart Hills Golf Club in Kent for the PDC Open, which begins on Wednesday, July 29.

Trump International IS world-class course,

says Greig Hutcheon after first pro event at

Balmedie

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The Tartan Tour professionals were singing the praises of the Trump International Links at Balmedie after today's Grampian Houston Junior Trip Fund pro-am at the venue 12 miles north of Aberdeen.
Greig Hutcheon, who finished runner-up to David Orr, winner of the first male pro event over the Trump course with a five-under-par 67, said:
"It's a world class golf course, arguably the finest modern links there has ever been constructed. Today, from the blue tees at 6,600 on a fairly benign day, it gave you scoring chances
"From the black tees at 7,500 in a strong wind it would be a beast. It's a must play links and  best described as EPIC!"
PGA in Scotland tournament controller Glen McPhee added: "Even the guys who have not scored well today have come in raving about the quality of the course."
The fact that nine players scored under the par of 72 is a tribute to the quality of play on the Tartan Tour these days.
Eastwood's Orr, pictured right, had seven birdies and two bogeys in halves of 34 and 33. He birdied the third, fourth, sixth, 10th, 12th, 17th and 18th, his final two gains lifting him past clubhouse leader Hutcheon to snatch the £1,833 top pro prize.
Paul Lawrie Golf Centre player Hutcheon had to settle for a £1,466 payslip for a 68 after an outstanding outward half of five-under-par 31, made up of an eagle 3 at the long fourth and birdies at the first, third and seventh. He did get one more birdie, at the 17th, but bogeys either side of it cost him the tournament.
Scott Henderson (Kings Links) and Stephen Gray (Hayston) tied  for third place on 69 and earned £962 apiece.
Gareth Wright's late 70 slotted him into fifth place and earned him £660.
David Thomson (Carnegie Club) steered the Petroleum Pipe No 1 team to victory in the pro-am eveny with a net total of 17-under-par 55. The amateurs were Paul Moir (handicap 3), Andrew Forbes (18) and Grahame McKenzie (13).
