Bradley Moore extends his lead to three strokes in Carris Trophy
Derbyshire’s Bradley Moore is three shots clear at the top of the leaderboard at the halfway stage of the Carris Trophy at Little Aston Golf Club in Staffordshire.
The 17-year-old from Kedleston Park had been a stroke ahead after the first round of the English boys’ open stroke play championship and extended his lead when he added level par 72 to his opening 69.
However, he came in counting the cost of two bogeys in the last four holes. “It was a shame, really. I’d got a few under and then towards the end it tailed off and it wasn’t as good as yesterday.
“But it’s nice to feel I haven’t played great but knocked it round in level par – and I’ll look forward to tomorrow,” added Moore (Image © Leaderboard Photography), who has won the England Golf boys’ order of merit for the past two years.
Most of the other early challengers slipped back – but, on a day of sunshine and showers, they were quickly replaced by a host of low-scoring players.
John Gough of Buckinghamshire, Hugo Townsend of Sweden, Gian-Marco Petrozzi of Staffordshire and Billy Spooner of Lincolnshire all beat par, while John Axelsen of Denmark and Jordan Sundborg from the Isle of White went round in level 72.
All six are currently sharing second place, grouped on level par for the championship. There’s another four players just a stroke behind them.
Meanwhile, the Nations Cup team prize was shared by England I, represented by Bradley Moore, Will Enefer (Wrekin) and Harry Hall (West Cornwall), and Demark I, John Axelsen, Christoffer Bring and Alexander Frances.
The low score of the day was four-under 68, returned first by Townsend, shortly after by Gough (Stoke Park) and later by Denmark’s Jonathan Goth-Rasmussen.
Townsend, 16, offered a classic case of ‘beware the injured/sick golfer’ having been ill all night, but his golf was superb. He had five birdies and didn’t drop a shot until his solitary bogey on the 17th.
“If you feel bad you don’t think about the golf, just how bad you’re feeling,” he said. “I played really, really well, I only missed one green and one fairway. Maybe I should be sick more often!”
Gough, 16, had a brilliant start, scoring par, birdie, eagle, over the first three holes. He, too, dropped just one shot, on the 11th, and came straight back with birdies on the next two holes.
“I’m really happy, I hadn’t had an under-par round in a national event this year and it’s good to get back on track.
Petrozzi, 18, (Trentham) was another low scorer, adding three-under 69 this opening 75. He finished in considerable style, almost holing a wedge shot on the last to save par and stay below 70.
“My target was to get back to level par, so I’m pleased,” he commented. “It was a lot more score-able today, the wind had dropped, the rain softened the greens a tad and, as far as I’m concerned, I didn’t make as many mistakes as yesterday.
Spooner (Woodhall Spa) putted well from short range to secure his 71, while Sundborg (Shanklin  and Sandown) also found the measure of the greens and played steadily:
“I didn’t take any risks, that’s the plan this week.”
John Axelsen has graduated to this championship after his win in last year’s McGregor Trophy for U16s and has completed two rounds in level par. “I guess the scores are all right, but my game is much better than the score. I could have been minus but I had so many putts, both today and yesterday.”
But he added: “I like being two or three back at the last round. I like to hunt, so it’s not too bad.”
After today’s round the field was cut to the leading 60 players and ties who go forward to play the final 36 holes. The cut fell at nine over par and a total of 62 players qualified.

PGA Europro Tour report and scores by Scots

Yorkshireman sets pace with a nine-under 62

NEWS RELEASE
By NICK TEALE
Daniel Gavins shot an outstanding nine-under-par 62 to lead the Wealth Design Invitational by two shots after the first round of the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour event at Hawkstone Park Golf Club in Shropshire.

The Yorkshireman is two clear of James Scade in second, while three golfers trail the leader by three.

Gavins (Walton Driving Range) graduated from the EuroPro to the Challenge Tour in 2013 but didn’t maintain full playing privileges. However, he is targeting an immediate return to Europe’s second-tier tour next summer.

His round of 62 consisted of nine birdies and nine pars and is the lowest score ever shot on Hawkstone’s Championship Course, which is usually a par 72 but is being played as a 71 for this event.
A cut to the leading 50 players and ties will be made after 36 holes. Live scoring will be available at www.europrotour.com.
The final round will be filmed for a two-hour highlights package which will air on Sky Sports on Tuesday, August 4.

McKenna steals some limelight from leader

Scott with course record of nine-under-par 62

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Nairn's Sandy Scott maintained the pole position in the Scottish
Under-18 boys' open stroke play championship at Royal Burgess Golfing Society's Barnton course in Edinburgh today.
But he had to share some of the Day 2 spotlight with another Northern competitor, Fintan McKenna (pictured left).
The Royal Aberdeen player shaved a shot off the 12-year-old amateur record with a brilliant round of nine-under-par 62 - a staggering 16 strokes better than his first-round 78.
McKenna's score  for the parkland course has never been bettered. even by the pros! Kenny Walker set the professional record of 62 back in 2004. The amateur record of 63 was shared by three players and dated back to 2003.
He had one eagle (at the par-5 16th), eight birdies, at the first, third, sixth, seventh, eight, ninth, 12th and 18th in halves of 29 (six under par) and 33. McKenna's only bogey came at the 13th.
The Balgownie junior member shares fifth place on 140, six behind Scott who leads by three after rounds of 65 and 69. The Nairn prospect has not had a single bogey in 36 holes.
He birdied the fourth and 16th in Round 2 - the rest of the holes he parred. You cannot get much steadier than that!

Northerners really did steal the show in the second round.
Stephen Roger (Cruden Bay), pictured, last year's North-east District boys' stroke and match-play champion, shot a 65, which included eight birdies and two bogeys. Coupled with his first-round 72, Roger is in second place on 137.

Graham Fox swoops to conquer with a 66 at

Panmure pro-am for £1,140 prize

Late finisher Graham Fox swooped with an excellent four-under-par round of 66 to snatch the £1,140 first prize away from clubhouse leaders Graeme Brown (Montrose Links) and Greg McBain (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) at the Panmure Golf Club pro-am near Carnoustie today.
Brown and McBain had posted matching rounds of 68 some time earlier, Brown after an eagle 3 at the long second and McBain with the help of four birdies over the first six holes.
But Fox also had a flying start with birdies at the first, second, third and sixth on his way to an outward three-under 32 after he bogeyed the ninth.
Another bogey popped up at the 12th before the Clydeway Golf man got back in the groove with his fifth and sixth birdies at the 13th and 16th for 34 home.
Discounting Fox's seven wins earlier in the year in the PGA in Scotland's better-ball series, this was  his fifth win in individual events this season.
Scott Henderson (Kings Links), one of seven players who earned £317 each for joint fourth place on 69, also led home the Petroleum Pipe Middle East Team 3 trio of amateurs, Chris Masson (handicap 6), David Templeton (4) and Martin Thomson (13) to victory in the team event with a 15-under-par net total of 125.

Further improvements at Meldrum House

Hotel and golf course

NEWS RELEASE
One of Scotland’s top golf hotels has unveiled a series of key on near Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire has been completed ahead of the the 54-hole stroke play senior pros' tournament, the Aberdeen Masters, and a planned multi-million pound expansion that will add a further 28 bedrooms and an impressive ballroom at the resort.
The latest round of upgrades includes significant changes to a series of holes on the championship course, which previously hosted the Northern Open.
Inside the clubhouse, a new-look pro shop has also been revealed signalling a continued commitment to the resort’s development plans.
“The transformation of Meldrum House is ongoing, but we have already created one of Scotland’s top golf resorts which is a great achievement,” said Andy Burgess, the hotel’s chief executive.
“To stay at this level, we must maintain the momentum we have established and that means making investments both on and off the course.
He continued: “The course changes unveiled today are designed to improve playability while retaining the top-level golfing experience our championship course presents. It’s a balancing act, but the improvements have been warmly received by members and visitors alike.
" Equally, the changes to the pro shop may be more apparent but they also follow the same objectives of continuing the upward trajectory and maintaining the momentum at the resort.”
On the course, changes to holes six, seven and eight have removed lost ball areas where scrub and thick rough limited players’ options. While this element of the on-course redesign is subtle, the changes to the penultimate hole are anything but.
With Meldrum’s picturesque pond seeing a significant change as well as a new fairway that is 35 yards wider, the short par 4 17th has become a true risk-and-reward hole. It is also in keeping with the general ethos of continual improvement adopted by the resort as a whole.
“To keep things moving in the right direction, the directors were keen to show that it’s not just the hotel that is looked at every year but also the golf course,” said Kenneth Harper, Meldrum’s golf course and estate grounds manager.
“The work on 17 makes a big difference and not just from a playability point of view. It looks like a better hole now with the pond shaped in and the fairway right in front of you to have a pop at.
"Six, seven and eight are also good changes that suit the holes. The shapes have been looked at carefully so they look as if they’ve been there forever. It’s all part of a much bigger plan that is being received very positively.”
The £50,000 investment in on-course improvements was implemented during the winter months ahead of the start of the season. It included diverting waterways, installing new drains, building a new ladies’ tee and laying 7,000 metres of turf.
As Burgess explains, the new pro shop and course design are essential to the development of the resort.
“We have a very clear plan for Meldrum which involves taking it from being a very special Scottish country house into a prestigious venue and world-class resort,” he said.
“These latest changes mark an important stage in the road towards that goal and yet another milestone in the development of this resort.”
