Tee times, pairings Open, Rounds 1-2 The Swilcan Bridge at St. Andrews' Old Course
The Swilcan Bridge at St. Andrews' Old Course ( Associated Press )
ST. ANDREWS: Then again, should the dateline read University Place, Wash.?
Louis Oosthuizen paired with Tiger Woods? Weren’t they lead actors the first two days of the recent U.S. Open at Chambers Bay?
Jordan Spieth with Dustin Johnson? Didn’t they dominate the spotlight on the final day at that same championship?
Yes, indeed, and just in case you didn’t get enough of them out there in the Pacific Northwest, guess what?
Those in charge of the draw at the 144th Open have put Oosthuizen and Woods together again for the first two rounds. They’ll go off in the 9:55 a.m. game , with Jason Day as the third member.
Though it’s a group that in some respects makes sense, given that Woods (2000, 2005) and Oosthuizen (2010) have combined to win each of the last three Opens at St. Andrews, the way those first two days unfolded at Chambers Bay makes this a dubious choice.
Woods struggled mightily on Thursday and shot 80, while Oosthuizen posted 77. The fact that Rickie Fowler, the third member of the group, had 81 provided ammunition for those who theorised that Woods’ play dragged everyone down.
Oosthuizen did recover to follow that 77 with 66-66-67 and finish in a share of second, but clearly the first day hurt him tremendously. (Woods followed with a 76 to beat just one other golfer of those who finished 36 holes.)
Curious, the R&A decision to toss Oosthuizen right back in there with Woods, but pairing Spieth and Johnson in the 9:33 game (with Hideki Matsuyama) also smacks of Chambers Bay flavour.
Spieth birdied the 72nd hole, then held on to win by one when two groups later, Johnson three-putted for par at that same 18th hole.
While Spieth has been basking in the glory ever since, including a victory at the John Deere Classic on Sunday, Johnson has been replaying that missed eagle roll, then that errant birdie try, putts that could have beaten or tied Spieth.
If the two of them had thought of putting the U.S. Open behind them and getting on with this British Open business, it will be difficult now that there is this great fodder for the next few days.
In other news about the draw, the honor of playing beside Tom Watson, who will tee it up for his final British Open, was extended to Ernie Els and Brandt Snedeker. Normally, with such an illustrious elder statesman such as Watson, 65, a five-time winner of the Claret Jug, that would indicate for Els and Snedeker the chance to pose for photos on the Swilcan Bridge in Friday’s second round, but not so fast when it comes to Watson. After all, he nearly won this thing in 2009 and has made the cut in three of the last four.
Watson, Els, and Snedeker will go off at 8:33 local time.
In other games of note, Nick Faldo, who said this will be his final  Open at St. Andrews, will go off at 2:45 with fellow Englishman Justin Rose and Fowler, who won Sunday at the Scottish Open.
Just before that game, at 2:35, will be Phil Mickelson with Henrik Stenson and Matt Kuchar.
The honoUr of the first starting time, 6:32am on Thursday, has been afforded Thomas Bjorn, Greg Owen and Rod Pampling.
The Open, of course, does not split its tees, so everyone will go off of No. 1, with times running till 4:13 p.m., a span of 9 hours 41 minutes.

Inverness senior leads after first qualifying round at Stirling

By GORDON THOMSON
Laurie Chancellor (Inverness) leads after the first qualifying round of the Scottish amateur seniors' match-play  championship at Stirling with an excellent score of 70 on a course playing its full length after the recent spell of rain.
Play began later than planned following a 90minute delay to allow some waterlogged greens to clear  but Chancellor was quickly into his stride to compile a fine score.
Bob Stewart (Tulliallan) and Angus Lamond (Glasgow) are two shots back on 72 with Rob Craw (Glenbervie ), Joe McManus (Uphall) and Graham Bell (Downfield ) a shot further back on 73.
The top 32 players after 36 holes will progress to the knock-out stages and with 39 players on 79 or better, Tuesday will see an interesting battle for the qualifying places.
Title-holder Malcolm Reid (Sonning) will not be joining them, having had to retire through injury.

The best net score of the day came from local player, James Strang (Stirling) with a fine net score of 67,playing off 8. The CSS  was 73 for the par 72 course.

 Kenny Gunnyeon's Deeside record scorecard

The figures achieved by Murcar Links' Kenny Gunnyeon in winning Sunday's Deeside Open with a record-setting, three-under-par  67 for the Haughton Course off the gold tees at Bieldside were

OUT: 3-4-4 4-3-5 5-4-4:  36
    IN: 4-4-3 4-2-4 3-3-4:  31

Joint holders of the previous course record of 69 were:
David Rennie (Deeside), Corren Stewart (Murcar Links), Jamie Hall (Deeside) and Jamie Pryde (Deeside)

The Deeside course underwent a radical change a few years back when the new clubhouse was built. The first hole as it was became a car park and the course now starts with a par-3 (which was the old second hole).
The old 17th and 18th holes were also made redundant and a driving range has been built on the area of the 17th.

Thanks,

Graeme

Golf Data Lab Scottish youths championship first day

Alastair Thurlow's six-under 65 gives him a four-shot lead at Irvine

Murrayfield's Alastair Thurlow slipped the field on the opening day of the Golf Data Lab Scottish youths golf championship at Irvine Golf Club, Ayrshire.
Thurlow shot a six-under-par 65 which game him a four-stroke lead from a group of six. They included Robert MacIntyre (Glencruitten) from Oban, the left-hander who won this title in 2013.
Thurlow had halves of 35 and 30, birdieing the first, ninth, 10th, 14th, 16th, 17th and 18th. His only bogey came at the long second.
MacIntyre ran up a double bogey 6 at the ninth which put him out in one-over-par 37 but he came home in 32 with birdies at the 14th, 16th and 18th.

They are Jamie Dick of Gloucestershire, Rhys Nevin-Wharton of Cheshire, Gian-Marco Petrozzi of Staffordshire, Billy Spooner of Lincolnshire, Jonathan Thomson of Yorkshire (image © Leaderboard Photography) and Jordan Wrisdale of Lincolnshire.
The players:
Jamie Dick, 19, (Sherdons Golf Centre) was a member of England’s winning team at the 2014 Boys Home Internationals and the Canadian International Junior Challenge, and for GB&I in the Jacques Leglise Trophy.
Rhys Nevin-Wharton, 17, (Sandiway) tied third in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters and shared fourth place in the Irish boys’ open. He was the runner-up in last year’s Daily Telegraph junior championship.
Gian-Marco Petrozzi, 18, (Trentham) tied fourth in the Irish boys’ open and has had a string of high finishes this season in the Welsh strokeplay, the Darwin Salver, the Fairhaven Trophies and the Peter McEvoy Trophy.
Billy Spooner, 17, (Woodhall Spa) first represented England in 2012 and contributed to last year’s successful U16 campaign against the other home nations. He has had top ten finishes in this year’s Fairhaven Trophies and the South East of England links championship.
Jonathan Thomson, 18, (Lindrick) finished sixth in the recent Brabazon Trophy, supported by Your Golf Travel, where he shot six-under 66 in the third round. He was third in this year’s Duncan Putter in Wales and a member of England’s winning team at the 2014 Boys’ Home Internationals.
Jordan Wrisdale, 19, (Boston) has just helped Lincolnshire to reach County Finals, with rounds of 68, 64 at qualifying. He was fifth in the South East of England links championship and also shared the first round lead in the Brabazon Trophy.

Jerry Smith scores first Champions' Tour

victory with tournament low record

Jerry Smith shot a final round of 70 (two under par) and a tournament record low aggregate of 200 to win the US Seniors Tour's Encompass Championship at North Shore Country Club, Glenview, Illinois on Sunday.
It was Smith's first win on the Champions Tour for the over-50s.
Smith, from Iowa, finished at 16-under 200, a tournament record.
Smith led by three shots entering the final round but was just a shot ahead through 15 holes Sunday. But a hole-out eagle from a greenside bunker at the par-5 16th hole helped Smith notch a three-shot victory over David Frost, who closed with a 68.
