Bryan Fotheringham wins Moray county championship play-off v John Campbell

Forres club champion Bryan Fotheringham  won the Moray County Championship at Grantown on Spey Golf Club this evening.
He scored 68 69 for 137, the same total as local man John Campbell who had rounds of 69-68.
Bryan won a two-hole aggregate play-off over the first and 13th holes with a total of 7 (3-4) to Campbell's 8 (4-4)
Kyle Godsman (Moray) was third with 71 and 67 for 138.
It was Fotheringham's first success in the county championship.
"It's always clashed with an SGU Order of Merit event in the past and I don't think I've played in the Moray championship for something like 15 years," said Bryan.

Battling Brooks hangs on to lead with a 69

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Basildon-born Daniel Brooks maintained his lead on the third day of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open after a tremendously gutsy round of 69.
The London-based 28-year-old opened with a double bogey after an errant tee shot, but showed great resilience to bounce back with four birdies to finish on 12 under par.
Brooks will carry a one-shot lead over Raphaël Jacquelin into the final day at Gullane, where he will attempt to claim his second European Tour title.
Despite a stiff breeze and unseasonably cold temperatures in East Lothian, Jacquelin carded a stunning round of 64 to climb to 11 under par.
The Frenchman moved firmly into contention to win a fifth European Tour title after firing six birdies in a faultless display.
American Ryder Cup player Rickie Fowler, in-form Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Dutchman Joost Luiten, who birdied three of the last four holes, are all within striking distance on ten under par.

A further shot back is England's Eddie Pepperell, who had a 65 - the second best round of the day.
Florida-based, Inverness-born Russell Knox is in the same group as Pepperell, an eagle at the 16th helping him to a 66 that means the Florida-based Scot leads the home challenge after Paul Lawrie  shot a 69 to lie two shots further back.
Knox, who will also play at next week's Open at St Andrews, says some extra practice on Thursday evening had helped improve his scoring.
"I never hit balls after a round, but last night I did because I felt I was struggling," said the 30-year-old.
"I don't know what I found - probably nothing changed except for just hitting a couple of good back-to-back shots to the greens - and today I came out swinging lovely and gave myself a lot of chances.
"I know that, if I hit it like I did today tee to green I'll give myself an opportunity and that's all that matters."
Lawrie said on his website:
"Got off to perfect start today by making birdies at the first two holes then really struggled on the greens again, stroke felt really long and decelerate which is an old habit I sometimes fall into , had so many chances today but couldn't get it in very frustrating. Went to the putting green to work on shortening the stroke so hopefully better tomorrow."

Key quotes
Daniel Brooks “I hit it way right on the first, which is pretty much the only place you can’t go. I got up there and if it wasn’t for the ball spotters, I would’ve probably lost my ball. There wasn’t really anywhere to take a drop, so I just had a swipe, moved it about a foot and managed to hack it out with my next one.
“I felt a little twinge in my wrist on the first shot, and I hit in the rough quite a few times after that so
I felt a little twinge every time. But I still managed to hit some really nice shots out there and I also scrambled really well today, so I’m quite proud of the way I hung in there.”
Raphael Jacquelin
“The key of the day was good pace on the greens. My caddie Jeff and I are reading the greens really well this week. That has taken a lot of pressure off my putts, because I’ve been able to focus on the pace and the line we’ve chosen. I holed a lot of putts today.
“I’ve worked very hard to be in this position, so I’m happy. I’m going to try to enjoy every shot tomorrow, even if I miss some. It’s easy to say, but that’s the key – to have fun. The last few months haven’t been fun at all, because I’ve been playing so poorly. But today, I really enjoyed myself.”
Rickie Fowler
“The winds were a bit gusty today, and even the constant wind was still pretty strong. So you had to be careful of that, because it didn't play easy out there. It was a good test but I enjoyed it, I'm pleased with the round and looking forward to tomorrow.”

Pedro Linhart's 64 shoots him two clear

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Pedro Linhart fired a stunning eight-under-par 64 on moving day at the WINSTONgolf Senior Open to march into a two shot lead as the Spaniard chases a maiden European Senior Tour title.
The former European Tour winner is playing his third full season on the over-50s tour but will take a lead into the final round for the first time at the stunning Open Course in northern Germany, with Englishman Gary Marks leading the chasing pack.
Linhart’s flawless round included a purple patch of four consecutive birdies around the turn, the final one coming courtesy of a 30 foot putt at the par five first – his tenth - and moved him to ten under par.
The Cadiz player is relishing his first experience of leading the field in the final day of a Senior Tour event, especially on this imperious form, and he feels he has the necessary experience from days’ past to get the job done.
“I just started to get it flowing,” said the 52 year old, whose sole European Tour win came at the 1999 Madeira Islands Open. “I made a load of birdies and never missed a fairway or green, maybe one green but on the fringe. I had a run going at the turn and that big putt at the first was a real bonus.
“I missed a little putt at the last but every round can always be better in this game. I’d rather hold the lead than to be coming from behind and this is what we’re here for, to play under these conditions.
“I’ve won a couple of events recently in Spain but I’ve never been in this position in a Senior Tour event. It will be windy and cooler but the wind is my friend - I like playing in wind.
“I was leading in the third and fourth rounds when I won the Madeira Islands Open and it’s a long time ago but I just need to try and recall that.
“I’ve been close a few times. Last week I got it going on the front nine but just didn’t have a good finish. I feel like my game is growing as I get older so hopefully I’ll take advantage of that.”
Marks is another man chasing a first Senior Tour title and, in just his fifth start having earned his place through Qualifying School earlier this year, he is hoping a victory can mark a career breakthrough, having tried for many years to make it onto The European Tour without success.
“I’m very happy with that round,” said the Londoner, whose seven under par 65 moved him to within two of the lead on eight under.
“I’ve had a shaky start to my Senior Tour career. I had a wrist injury in Jersey and had to withdraw for that week and the following week, and then last week at Bad Ragaz I was trying to find something but didn’t really play well.
“I’ve brought something better this week and I dropped the putts when they were needed. I had one bit of trouble on 17 but I got out of it with a par so other than that it was just a question of taking my chances.
“That’s the best round of my Senior Tour career, definitely. It’s a rocky old road, being a golfer. One minute you’re up, another minute you’re down. Tomorrow I could play just as well and not take the chances and be six shots worse.
“It will be an exciting day tomorrow, being in the thick of the action. It’s not a breakthrough yet, not until close of play tomorrow. It’s really encouraging to be in this position though. I’m fairly positive, but it’s a treacherous game.”
Paul Wesselingh is one of the three players lurking with intent three shots off the leader on seven under par as the Englishman attempts to successfully defend the title he won in such dramatic circumstances last year – beating Bernhard Langer and Philip Golding on the third play-off hole.
The eight-time Senior Tour winner carded a five under par third round 67 to join his compatriot Bob Cameron (67) and joint first round leader Chris Williams (68) of South Africa in a share of third place.

Slovakia Challenge report and scores

Doherty, McLeary in the mix with a round to go
Jeff Winther is aiming to become the first Danish winner on the European Challenge Tour since 2012 as the 27 year old takes a one shot lead into the final round of the D+D REAL Slovakia Challenge, courtesy of a six under 66 which included a third consecutive birdie five at the par six 15th.
Winther sits atop the leaderboard on 13 under but to earn a maiden title he will have to fend off the challenge of the tour’s most in-form player, Portugal’s Ricardo Gouveia – chasing back to back victories after his win in Germany last week - as well as experienced Scot Jack Doherty.
They are both a shot off the pace on 12 under par, while promising Spaniard Borja Virto Astudillo is in fourth place on his own on 11 under.
The leader, from Kokkedal near Copenhagen, is another man in form right now having recorded a career-best tied third finish at last week’s AEGEAN Airlines Challenge Tour by Hartl Resort and he is hoping he can continue his impressive form, especially on the unique 15th hole – the first par six to be played competitively nder the auspices of The European Tour.
“It was a flawless round really,” said the three-time winner on the satellite Nordic Golf League. “It was fantastic to play so well, it just felt awesome.
“I have made very few mistakes all week and I’ve been hitting 95 per cent of the fairways so that really helps. My iron play is solid and I have missed no more than seven greens this week.
“But there is still one more day to go and I just need to try and go out there and enjoy it tomorrow. There are plenty of birdies still out there and it will be interesting to see where they put the pins tomorrow.
“It feels like the 15th is a hole where you have to make a five. You can reach easily in three and I haven’t been hitting on hoping to make a one-putt for eagle. I’m just getting it up there in three and taking the two-putt for birdie.”
Andreas Hartø was the last Dane to win on the Challenge Tour, coincidentally at the D+D REAL-sponsored Czech Challenge three years ago, and Winther is hoping he can break that duck on the final day in Slovakia before eventually following in the footsteps of his many compatriots who have come through Europe’s top developmental tour before going on to European Tour success.
“That group of players, with Morten Ørum Madsen, JB Hansen, Andreas and Lucas Bjerregaard, seemed to cruise through the Challenge Tour and that’s maybe why we haven’t seen a Danish winner here in a while,” he said.
“Jeppe Huldahl has come close recently and I think he will again because he is a great player but I’ll try my best to get a win and hopefully I can do it.”
Gouveia has been on superlative form of late, making every cut this season and finishing in the top 20 in all but one of his nine appearances this year, and he feels he is in the kind of form where a six or seven under par round is always within his reach.
“I do feel like that but at the moment I’m just thinking about my long-term goals and to just keep playing well,” said the 23 year old, who carded a three under par third round 69. “It was a little frustrating today because there were a lot of missed chances and good birdie opportunities and it’s those little things that make the difference.”
Doherty, meanwhile, is hoping to follow in the footsteps of his close friend and last year’s winner Andrew McArthur and, having been in contention in Switzerland last month, the 33 year old still feels as if he is learning on the job and improving all the time.
“I played nicely,” said the Australia-born player after a four under third round 68. “I was in control of my game and I was more relaxed than I thought I would be.
“It’s definitely a boost to have been in this position recently and the more you do that the better you become at it. I like the way the course is set up and I’m looking forward to the final round now.
“Andrew texted me on Thursday evening when I was leading and just said good work, and I’m sure I’ll get a wee text from him tonight. It’s good to know that he’s won it before and it gives me a bit of a boost to know it’s out there for me.”

4.5-2.5 victory over Denmark in final at Halmstad, Sweden

Scotland men win European team title

NEWS RELEASE FROM SGU
Scotland today lifted their second European men's amateur team championship in the last six years with a 4.5-2.5 victory over Denmark in the final at Halmstad in Sweden.

Following in the notable spike marks of Colin Montgomerie, who was part of the victorious Scotland side in at the very same venue in 1985, national coach Ian Rae’s charges staved off a spirited Danish comeback to secure the gold medals.

Huntly-born Rae, who led Scotland to the European crown in 2009 after claiming the world title the previous year, saw his side build a 2-0 foursomes lead before they stood firm in the afternoon singles. Kilmarnock Barassie’s Jack McDonald secured a crucial win, before Grant Forrest from Craigielaw delivered the winning point.

Global stars Montgomerie, Jose Maria Olazabal and Jesper Parnevik were among those who graced Halmstad for the 1985 staging of the event, but the Scotland line-up of McDonald, Forrest, Ewen Ferguson, Graeme Robertson, Connor Syme and Greig Marchbank will now go into the history books as team winners after securing Scotland’s seventh European title.

McDonald and Forrest were key players throughout the week
Both won five points from six in the match-play stages, as the pair maintained the form that saw them reach the semi-finals and final respectively at last month’s British amateur championship at Carnoustie.

Forrest said: “I didn’t know my putt was to win at the time, but it’s now a great feeling. It’s been a brilliant team performance this week.

“We have done well in the foursomes the last three days and coming in at 2-0 up in the final it could have been easy to get complacent. But we knew we all still had jobs to do and I just went out to try and win my match.”

Rae, who has now been in charge of four winning Scottish sides at the European championships, added: “Our foursomes pairings this week have been fantastic. We kept the same format right the way through, and all credit to the guys for seeing the job through in the singles in the final. Denmark are a very, very good team.”

The Scots began meaning business, with Bearsden’s Ferguson and Forrest surging to a four-hole lead after nine holes against Morten Toft Hansen and Sixten Stemann Jensen, before claiming an emphatic 6 and 5 triumph.

McDonald and Glenbervie’s Robertson, the former University of Stirling team-mates playing at their third European amateur team event, were made to work harder against Niklas Norgaard Moller and Peter Launer Baek before maintaining their winning streak.

The Danes were one up after 12 holes, but the Scots duo turned it round to level after 15 before securing a 2 and 1 victory – their third straight foursomes victory in Sweden.

Up against it, Denmark came out all guns blazing in the singles with Philip Juel Berg soon racing to a 6 and 5 win over Thornhill’s Greig Marchbank, the 19th hole hero for the Scots in their semi-final win against England.
It was then 2-2 after Martin Leth Simonsen took out Ferguson 2 and 1.

But McDonald stayed cool to see off the challenge of Toft Hansen on the 17th, winning 2 and 1, before Forrest turned around his match against Norgaard Moller, winning the final two holes.
Drumoig’s Connor Syme was ahead in the final match, but amicably he and opponent Launer Baek settled for a halved match with the contest over.
Back in 2009, Scotland’s victorious side in Wales was made up of Wallace Booth, Ross Kellett, Michael Stewart, Glenn Campbell, Paul O’Hara and Gavin Dear, with Scott Knowles the non-playing captain.
Other players to have competed in the European Amateur Team Championship down the years include world No. 1 Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer, Matteo Manassero, Victor Dubisson, Chris Wood and Jonas Blixt.

Janzen, Funk, Frost, Bryant share lead

at US Senior Tour event

FROM ESPN.COM
GLENVIEW, Illinois -- Lee Janzen likes what he's seen from his golf game lately even if it means not seeing much of his home.
Janzen birdied three straight holes Friday to close his front nine and went on to shoot a 7-under 65 at North Shore Country Club to share the first-round lead in the Champions Tour's Encompass Championship with Fred Funk, David Frost and Brad Bryant.
Janzen qualified in New York on June 8 for the U.S. Open, then followed up his two rounds at Chambers Bay near Seattle with a sixth-place finish at the Constellation Senior Players Championship outside Boston.
He played the next week in the U.S. Senior Open in Sacramento and flew to Washington, and now he's in the Chicago area for another Champions Tour event.
"Fortunately, I feel like I've got a decent idea about what I'm doing with my golf swing, so I don't have this urgency to go to the golf course and hit a lot of balls," Janzen said.
Janzen started on the back nine Friday and birdied the 15th and 16th holes to get to 3 under. He missed the green on No. 17 but then chipped in for a birdie.
"I probably would have had a 6- to 8-footer for par coming back had it not gone in," Janzen said. "I came out of that hole smelling a lot better than it looked."
Janzen is still smarting from his failure to make the cut in the U.S. Open, which he blamed on two shots that led to a double and triple bogey.
"If I had just paid attention a little better on two irons shots and made a few putts, I feel like I would have had a chance to at least finish in the top 10," he said.
Funk began the season bothered by a sore elbow and sat at home for three months before returning.
"I'm trying to hit the ball better and I'm able to play," Funk said. "But I can't swing the way I want to swing.
"The doctors told me I've got a bunch of tendons hanging on by threads, they say, on both sides -- inside and outside. They said eventually it will just go away on its own ... maybe."
Both Funk and Bryant had stretches of four birdies in five holes on their back nine.
Funk's bogey-free round was his best to start a tournament since the Champion Tour's opening round of the 2014 season. He holed out from a greenside bunker at No. 5, his 14th hole.
"I played really solid today overall," Funk said. "I gave myself some chances, but I actually had a couple little breaks, too."
Bryant's score was his best in any Champions Tour event since 2012.
"I did not expect too much warming up today," he said. "I figured something out at the end of my warmup session, and on the golf course I hit it great. It came out of nowhere.
"It sort of felt like the old Brad today."

Justin Thomas leads outright

 at John Deere Classic

FROM GOLFWEEK.COM

For the first time in his US PGA Tour career, Justin Thomas holds an outright lead at the completion of a round.
Thomas, who co-led the John Deere Classic through 18 holes, shot 4-under 67 Friday at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois, to move to 12-under 130, a shot better than Johnson Wagner and Tom Gillis.
The 22-year-old rookie, who shot 75 in the final round to fall out of contention at the Greenbrier Classic, birdied his first two holes Friday and never looked back.
"Later in the day when the greens get a little bumpier, it's harder to make putts," Thomas said, "so to kind of get myself a little bit deep to start. It was nice."
He added birdies at Nos. 6, 11 and 17, and had just one bogey, at the par-4 13th. Thomas also got up-and-down to save par at the par-4 18th to hold onto his lead.
"I hate finishing with a bogey probably more than anything," Thomas said.
Thomas, in his second professional season after having graduated from the Web.com Tour last year, has compiled five top-10 finishes and made 16 cuts in 23 starts this season.
He has yet to qualify for next week's Open Championship, but can earn his spot in the field if he finishes in the top 5 and is the highest finishing player not already exempt.

Jordan Spieth shot a 7-under 64 on Friday to go from at risk of missing the cut to moving within five shots of the lead.
Spieth, who will try for his third straight major title next week at the Open, opened the tournament Thursday with an even-par 71. But he rallied with four birdies in six holes and an eagle Friday.
