Father and son win Milngavie club titles

over 36 holes on same day - is it a record?

FROM JILL FOGGO
Last Sunday, my husband Alan won the Milngave Golf Club men's club championship and our son, 17-year-old Murray, won the club's junior championship. Both were 36-hole finals.
Alan beat Alistair Green by 6 and 5 on the 31st green while Murray beat Calum McColl by one hole after playing the full 36 holes.
This was Alan's fourth final and third title. It was Murray's first and last junior final as he moves up to youth category next year.
We believe a 'father and son' double has never happened at Milngavie Golf Club before. I am unsure if it has ever happened at any other club. It would be interesting to know from any Scottishgolf.com reader if they know of a similar family achievement.
Alan  was round in 68 in the morning against Alistair Green and was four up  at lunch. He then birdied three of the next six holes and closed out the match 6 and 5.
Murray plays off 11 and he was round in 74 in the morning to be two up at lunch. But Calum turned the match round in the afternoon and was one up with nine holes to play.
Murray won the 30th and 32nd before his tee shot at the 34th went out of bounds and the match was all square with two to play. Murray hit the green in two at the 35th and Calum's approach went long. So Murray went one up when Calum failed to get up and down and they both parred the last for Murray to win by one hole.

AAM Scottish Open halfway summary and scores

Brooks flows three shots clear at Gullane,

Lawrie leading Scot, 5 off the pace
FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
A week after making the cut for the first time in five months, England’s Daniel Brooks surged into a commanding halfway lead at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.
The 28 year old won the Madeira Islands Open last season, but followed that breakthrough with 14 consecutive missed cuts before picking up another cheque.
After playing the weekend in Dubai at the end of January, Brooks missed 13 cuts in a row this term, but finished tied for 20th in France last week to stop the rot.
An opening 64 at Gullane suggested that was more than a temporary return to form, and a second round 65 put Brooks 11 under par and three shots clear.
“I played really solid and I’ve not missed many shots at all,” said Brooks, who after an eagle on the long second had one bogey and four birdies, including an effort from 25 feet on the last.
“The last three weeks now; Germany, I started playing nicely, just missed the cut there but played some nice golf. France, I had a load of silly mistakes, bogeys. Cutting them out this week and it's worked out nicely so far.
“It's hard to miss that many cuts. It does get you down. It only takes one good week out here and hopefully that's what I'll have.
“I've been there, done it, hopefully can have a good weekend and see what happens.”
Defending champion Justin Rose and his Ryder Cup team-mate Graeme McDowell were among those sharing second on eight under, along with Swede Johan Carlsson, Ireland’s Shane Lowry, American Ryan Palmer and Englishman Matthew Nixon.
Rose rated his game at just 50 per cent despite carding a second consecutive 66.
The former US Open Champion recovered from a bogey on the first with five birdies in the next seven holes, but could only manage nine straight pars on the back nine.
The closing stretch was not without incident however, with Rose's tee shot on the 16th hitting an elderly spectator on the head.
"You can't quite see where the spectator line is on that hole and when I saw the ball bounce up I was hoping it had maybe hit one of the white stakes," Rose said.
"I was pretty concerned walking up there and seeing there was someone on the ground, but he took it like a trooper and was talking to me so that was slightly reassuring. He told me had been coming to tournaments for years and years and had never got hit before."
Speaking about his round, Rose said his game was "running at 50 per cent", adding: "There are still a couple of loose shots that I am getting away with on this course that I wouldn't on other courses.
"But I feel like I have managed my game well, played the hard holes well and kept it clean."
Lowry, who was in contention for the US Open last month before finishing ninth, also carded his second successive 66 and credited his recent good form to a settled home life.
"I've settled down a lot and matured a lot," said Lowry, who won the 2009 Irish Open while still an amateur. "Everything in my life is a lot more stable and my golf is reaping the benefits."
Carlsson went round in a 67 which included four birdies against a single bogey.
“For me it was just pretty solid,” he said. “I continued to putt good, made some saves. I did have a few chances, though, but I made a few good par putts as well.”
Chile's Felipe Aguilar was alongside Mickelson on three under after a 64 which featured birdies at the first and second and a hole-in-one on the third, where he holed out from 170 yards with an eight iron.
The 40 year old has a habit of brilliant bursts of scoring, winning his second European Tour title in Singapore last year with a final round of 62 at Laguna National, holing his second shot to the 18th to complete the back nine in just 28 shots.
But the best round of the day belonged to Dutchman Joost Luiten, who produced a flawless 63 to match Thorbjørn Olesen’s opening effort.
Luiten will be hoping for a better follow-up than the Dane on Saturday – Olesen fired a 77 to miss the cut on level par.

Ross Drummond sharing lead in Germany

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Scot Ross Drummond and South Africa’s Chris Williams both carded three under par opening rounds of 69 to share the lead after a blustery first day at the WINSTONGolf Senior Open.

The sublime Open Course at the golfing haven in the north of Germany was bathed in sun for much of the day but that belied the severity of the gusts which provided a huge challenge for the European Senior Tour stars on day one.
It was a tightly-packed leaderboard, however, making for an exciting weekend’s golf, and Drummond (pictured right by courtesy of Getty Images(c), and Williams were the ones who led the way, with defending champion Paul Wesselingh one of the five players a shot further back on two under.
Drummond, who played in the final group at last week’s Swiss Seniors Open before recording his best finish of the season - tied third – was delighted to continue his solid form and he is relishing the opportunity to challenge for a maiden Senior Tour title.
“I’m really happy with that round,” said the 58 year old. “It was really blustery out there with a lot of strong cross-winds so it was tricky. The putting was tough as well with the wind so all in all I just played steady, within myself.
“I made five birdies and most of them were with nice putts from around five to ten feet so I took my chances when they came, which is what you have to do out there on a day like this.
“When you take those chances you get momentum and you can get on a little bit of a run. If you’re not taking your chances or getting your birdies then there’s always a chance you can drop a couple of shots and you can never get back up again then.
“I think you definitely feed off confidence in golf, no doubt about it, and playing well last week gave me a good feeling about my game. It gives me that little skip in my step and I managed to keep that going into this week – sometimes it works like that and sometimes it doesn’t.
“I’ve been telling myself I need to get that victory for the last nine years. I haven’t won yet on the Senior Tour and I feel as if I’m certainly capable of it.
“This is why we play, to be in situations like this. I played well today but golf’s a fickle game. There’s no pattern and I’d certainly prefer to be going into the weekend playing well, but we’ll see what happens over the next couple of days, you never know.”
Williams, meanwhile, joined Drummond at the summit in the afternoon and having also performed well in Switzerland last week, he feels like he is returning to the kind of form which earned him his first and only title back in 2011.
“It was quite windy out there so I’m very happy,” said the England-born player. “My scoring has improved quite a lot lately, I’ve had four of my last five rounds under 70 so that’s a sign that I’m going in the right direction anyways.
“My putting has been a little better and that always helps but I’m just trying to make a score and working hard to make something happen out there.
“The putting was tough out there, later in the day the greens have grown a little and that makes you a little more nervous around those five footers.
“I just hope I can keep knocking the putts in because I’m hitting it nice enough right now. I may have to dig deep into the memory bank to remember how to get a win but it’s just nice to be at the top of the leaderboard and from there I’ll just see how it goes. I’d rather be there than ten shots behind so I’m very happy.”
Eight-time Senior Tour winner Wesselingh was joined in a share of third place by his English compatriots Bob Cameron and John Gould, as well as former Ryder Cup player Gordon Brand Jnr of Scotland and Spaniard Pedro Linhard, as they all carded two under par rounds of 70.

Kirkhill's Craig Ross is sharing the lead at the halfway stage of the prestigious Chiberta Grand Prix at Biarritz in southwest France.
The Glasgow player, pictured, has shot rounds of 70 and 68 for two-under-par 138, joining first-round leader Thomas Fructuoso-Prevost in the lead. The Frenchman sliped from an opening 65 to a 73 over the par-70 course.

Doherty slips to one off the pace in Slovakia

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS

Ricardo Gouveia stepped up his bid to become the first back-to-back winner on the European Challenge Tour since Kristoffer Broberg in 2012 after a six under par 66 in the D+D REAL Slovakia Challenge gave him a share of the halfway lead.
The Portuguese hotshot won the AEGEAN Airlines Challenge Tour hosted by Hartl Resorts last week in Germany and set the clubhouse target of nine under par early in the second round in Slovakia with a round featuring seven birdies.
He was joined by Swede Steven Jeppesen, whose seven under round of 65 was the joint best of the day, while first-round leader Jack Doherty and Spaniards Borja Virto Astudillo and Luis Claverie were a shot further back on eight under par.
But the familiar presence of Gouveia at the top of the leaderboard is sure to catch the eye, the 23 year old already second in the Road to Oman Rankings and in imperious form.
“I played really well,” said the 23 year old. “My game is in a great place right now, I feel in good form. I’m driving the ball really well and I holed a few more putts today than usual too.
“Yesterday I lost a bit of concentration when some bad weather came in and I made a bogey and a double bogey, but I finished the round well which gave me some momentum today.
“I’ve now just got to keep on doing what I have been doing and keep focusing on the same goals and who knows what might happen this weekend.”
Jeppesen also brought good form to the Penati Golf Resort after finishing in a tie for fifth behind Gouveia in Germany and believes course knowledge is key to scoring well around the Legend Course.
“I’m feeling good, I played well,” he said. “I made a few putts which was nice, I’ve been really working on my putting and my driving and I’m now seeing some results.
“The greens here have quite severe undulations but if you hit the ball well you can use the slopes and ridges – course knowledge has been useful and I’ve quickly learned where you can and cannot leave the ball."

One of the more remarkable rounds of the day belonged to Austrian Florian Praegant, who began by birdieing his first seven holes before ultimately having to settle for a 68 to leave him six shots back.
Denmark’s Jeff Winther and England’s Paul Howard lie two shots off the lead on seven under, with a host of players well within striking distance on a course set up for low scoring and the weekend weather forecast fine.

Marchbank the 19th hole hero as Scotland beat England to reach European final in Sweden

Greig Marchank was the hero as Scotland beat England 4-3 to earn a place in the final against Denmark at the European men's amateur team championship at Halmstad Golf Club, Sweden.
The Scots shared the foursomes, Jack McDonald and Graeme Robertson beayting Sean Towndrow and Ashton Turner 2 and 1, but Grant Forrest and Ewen Ferguson lost to Jimmy Mullen and Ashley Chesters.
In the singles, Scotland went ahead 3-1 with wins by Forrest (2 and 1 against Mullen) and McDonald (3 and 2 against Turner).
But England hit back and squared it at 3-3 with wins by Chesters (2 and 1 against Ferguson) and Nick Marsh (2 and 1 against Connor Syme.
It was all down to the last singles in which Ben Taylor was three up after 12 and two up after 15  against Greig Marchbank. But the Scot staged a storming finish to square the contest and win at the 19th.
"What a day,” said Ian Rae, the SGU National Coach. “Greig was absolutely brilliant, winning the 16th with a birdie and making great pars at the 18th and 19th.

The boys have been great and to reach a second European final in three years is fantastic. Denmark are a good team but hopefully we can keep playing well.”

Scotland beat Denmark in a European boys team match in Pickala Finland. Will Porter and Rory Franssen won the foursomes tie at the 24th.
Murra Naysmith and Chris Curran both chalked up two-hole wins.
Calum Fyfe lost by 4 and 3 and Sandy Scott, beaten at the 19th on Thursday, lost at the 20th 24 hours later.

Cameron Black wins Under-14s title after playing in Under-18 event the previous day

Cameron Black (Royal Aberdeen) won the Paul Lawrie North-east District Under-14s championship at the Bieldside course with a round of 73 today, one fewer than runner-up Liam Waldron (Kintore).
Black had played two rounds in the Under-18s stroke-play over a longer course (from the white tees) on Thursday - the U14s played off the forward blue tees - and felt it helped him win the Under-14s' scratch title.
Jamie Gibb (Aboyne), playing off 19, won the handicap trophy with a net 68 and another Aboyne player, Daniel Aitken, who plays off 24, won the Under-12s scratch prize with a 94 gross.

Banchory's Sam Locke wins NE District

U18s match-play final v Marc Watt

You don't often see camera-shy North-East District SGU secretary George Young in the picture but here he is presenting the Paul Lawrie NE District U18s match-play trophy to Sam Locke. Picture by Cal Carson Golf Agency
  By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Banchory's Sam Locke, 16-year-old son of Paul Lawrie's swing coach, foiled the bid by 15-year-old Marc Watt (Inverallochy) to add the Paul Lawrie NE District U18s match-play title to the stroke-play title he won, also at Deeside, on Thursday.
Locke beat Watt by one hole in the final, leading for the first time with a par 4 at the 18th hole after Watt drove into trees and took three shots to reach the edge of the green.
Watt had been square or one up for the first 17 holes but could not shake off his dogged opponent .
Locke was one down with four to play but squared the contest with a 4 at the 15th and then took the 18th and the title with a par 4 to Watt's bogey 5.
It was a quality conest with the winner round in one-under-par 69 to Watt's 70. They had both been out in 35 and all square, Locke having birdied the sixth and ninth, Watt birdieing the short fifth
Watt birdied the long 13th to go ahead for the third time in the match but he never got to two up at any stage.
Sam's father Andrew Locke told me after the prizegiving that he lost in the 1989 final of the same tournament after winning the Under-18s stroke-play title the day before.
He recalls that Hamish Love, now the pro at Oldmeldrum GC,  was the player who ended his double bid.
"I don't want to make excuses some 26 years after that final at Turriff but I was feeling awful that day due to sickness and diarrhoea," said Andrew. "I remember that you were at the final!"
Which is more than I do.
Stonehaven-based Sam Locke gained reward for all the practice he puts in at the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre where his dad is a resident coach.

In this morning's semi-finals, Watt beat last year's stroke and match-play champion Steven Roger (Cruden Bay) by 4 and 3.
Locke beat Benjamin Henderson (Deeside) by 2 and 1.
Watt had five birdies to one by Roger and was out in 33 to 37 to be four up at the turn.
Locke was two at the turn in the other semi-final.

Malcolm Reid defends Scottish seniors' match-play title at Stirling next week

By GORDON THOMSON
Malcolm Reid (Sonning) defends the SSGS’s flagship Matchplay Championship, sponsored by McCrea Financial Services, which gets underway on Monday at Stirling Golf Club.
The top 32 players progress to the knock-out stages after the qualifying rounds on Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 July running through to the final on Friday afternoon.
With the under-55 players ineligible for this event, the focus for the leading players is on building their claims for international team selection as well as the championship which will be closely contested.
Among former winners taking part are Ian Brotherston (Dumfries and County), David Gardner (Broomieknowe) and Jim Watt (Edzell).
Serious challenges can also be expected from the in-form Lindsay Blair ( Grangemouth),  Bob Stewart (Tulliallan), John Fraser (Royal Burgess), and last year’s runner-up, Stewart Millar (Cochrane Castle).

A separate event for Super Seniors, aged 65 and over, will run in conjunction with the main event and Keith Howie (West Kilbride) is defending that title. Eight players progress from the qualifying rounds.

If you fancy a break from watching the Open why not come along and watch the country’s top senior amateur players in action.

Spieth fails to spark in John Deere Classic

FROM SKY SPORTS.COM
Jordan Speith had a low-key start in his bid to win his final tournament before next week’s Open as he shot an even-par 71 at the John Deere Classis in Illinois.
The 21-year-old will go for his third straight major when he tees up at St Andrews after stunning victories at the Masters and the US Open earlier this year.
At a venue where he won his first US PGA title two years ago as a teenager, he appeared to have the perfect platform to build on ahead of his trip to Scotland.

Yet he finished the opening day eight shots behind the leaders and is in danger of missing the cut after a frustrating round which included three bogeys and a string of missed birdie opportunities.
Speith will take heart to an extent from the fact he was six behind after 18 holes before he went on to beat Zach Johnson and David Hearn in a play-off in 2013.
But he is clearly some way from peaking ahead of a tournament when he will be seen by many as the favourite after reigning champion Rory McIlroy’s withdrawal because of an ankle injury.
American pair Justin Thomas and Nicholas Thompson shot eight-under 63s to take a share of the lead.
They sit one stroke ahead of two other players from the USA, Charles Howell III and Luke Guthrie, with five more players on six under including three-time event winner Steve Stricker.
Defending champion Brian Harman, who beat Johnson to the title by a stroke 12 months ago, hit a 67 and is tied for 21st.
